IPO ISSUED FOR PUBLIC FACING DUBAI TAXI / BMW TAKES ON VIP E-MOBILITY PROVIDER ROLE AT COP28 / AJEX TO SET UP DAMMAM HUB / AFM LOGISTICS’ AEROSPACE LOGISTICS
NETWORK
Dubai Taxi goes public potentially opening up fleet sector NEWLY FORMED DUBAI TAXI COMPANY AUTHORISED TO ENGAGE IN CONTRACTUAL AGREEMENTS FOR PASSENGER TRANSPORTATION SERVICES WITH OTHER ENTITIES FLEET In a move that could open up the fleet sector in Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, has enacted Law No. (21) of 2023, marking the evolution of Dubai Taxi Corporation into a public joint-stock company, now known as ‘Dubai Taxi Company (PJSC).’ This transformation, which includes the initiation of an Initial Public Offering (IPO), grants the company financial and administrative independence, heralding a new era in Dubai’s transportation sector. Accompanying this law, H.H.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council, approved Council’s Resolution No. (93) of 2023, outlining Dubai Taxi Company’s Articles of Association. These documents define the company’s objectives, including the introduction of futuristic transportation services like self-driving and flying taxis, and establish regulations for the operation and governance of the company. This includes the election procedures for the Company’s Board of Directors, now chaired by Abdul Mohsin Ibrahim Younis, with Ahmed Ali Al Kaabi as the Vice Chairman.
This rebranding from ‘Dubai Taxi Corporation’ to ‘Dubai Taxi Company (PJSC)’ is mandated across all existing legal references in the emirate. The law also stipulates the company’s longevity, setting its duration to 99 years, subject to automatic renewal under the conditions outlined in the Company’s Articles of Association. The Dubai Taxi Company (PJSC) is set to provide a range of transportation services, adhering to current emirate regulations. These services extend beyond traditional taxi operations to include leasing vehicles with or without drivers, offering specialised transportation
using self-driving vehicles, and potentially operating flying taxi services. Furthermore, the company is authorised to engage in contractual agreements for passenger transportation services with other entities, provided these contracts align with the new law and existing regulations. Accorfing to Dubai Taxi, the introduction of Law No. (21) of 2023 represents a strategic step towards modernising Dubai’s transportation infrastructure, leveraging technological advancements to enhance services and expand the emirate’s global footprint in the transportation sector.

AJEX Logistics Services has announced a groundbreaking partnership with the Saudi Authority for Industrial Cities and Technology Zones (MODON). This collaboration marks a significant expansion of AJEX’s logistics services in Dammam, the Kingdom’s emerging industrial powerhouse. Since its inception in 2021, AJEX has been on a rapid growth trajectory. The latest agreement with MODON allows the Saudibased logistics giant to operate extensive warehousing facilities spanning 6,000 square meters. These units will cater to a diverse range of storage needs, including dangerous goods, food and beverage products, and general items.
This partnership heralds a new era for AJEX’s logistical capabilities in Dammam, a key hub for Saudi Arabia’s oil, gas, and industrial sectors. BMW PROVIDES VIP SERVICES AT COP28 LIMO SERVICES BMW Group played a pivotal role in the transportation of VIP guests and officials at COP28. Central to this initiative was the deployment of BMW’s cutting-edge electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles – the BMW i7, BMW iX, and the BMW iX5 Hydrogen. These vehicles not only represent the zenith of automotive technology but also align closely with the principles of environmental sustainability and innovation, said BMW.
The flagship BMW i7 features components powered by sustainably-sourced solar electrons produced in the UAE by Emirates Global Aluminum. This approach significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions during the vehicle’s production cycle, highlighting BMW’s commitment to sustainable practices. The BMW iX, on the other hand, is a demonstration of BMW Group’s dedication to circular design. This concept revolves around maximising the lifecycle of materials, ensuring they
retain their value and reduce the overall carbon footprint of BMW’s vehicles. The emphasis is on the use of high-quality secondary materials, further underlining the company’s eco-friendly initiatives. Adding to this lineup was the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, which has recently completed intensive hot-weather testing in the UAE. This pilot vehicle is ideally suited for long journeys with minimal refueling stops, boasting a locally emissions-free drive. The hydrogen fuel cell technology, subject to specific framework, has the potential to be another pillar in the future BMW Group drive portfolio. Christian Bahoo, Global Head of Special Political Engagement, BMW Group said: “The COP28 UAE Presidency’s vision correlates with BMW’s commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement.” At COP28, BMW presented solutions and discussed the requirements it considers necessary to achieve the transformation to sustainable mobility. DULSCO: 75% OF OUR FLEET IS USING BIODIESEL
WASTE MANAGEMENT
Dulsco Group says it is in the driving seat when it comes to environmental sustainability, saving up to 200,000kg of CO2e a year by using greener, cleaner biofuels in company vehicles. Under a new partnership with the Middle East’s biggest biofuel
producer, Neutral Fuels, Dulsco People is powering 75 per cent of its vehicles in Dubai and Abu Dhabi with a special biodiesel blend fuel. Launched in the run up to COP28 UAE. the initiative currently saves 4.5 per cent in greenhouse gases. Dulsco is aiming to increase the
savings to over 6% by the end of 2023 by switching to an even more effective biofuel blend – and expanding the scheme to its operations in RAK. Dulsco saved 17,600kg of CO2e – equivalent to taking four fossil-fuelled cars off the road for a year – in the first 10 weeks of the initiative, which was launched in late July 2023. Neutral Fuels, the only biofuel producer with Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (ESMA) certification, collects waste cooking oil and transforms it into various blends of green fuel. Currently, 135 Dulsco People vehicles use biofuel, with plans to phase out fossil fuel across the entire fleet.

rabian Axles has made a significant mark in the automotive industry in the Middle East since it was founded almost 40 years ago. Established in 1986, it has become a prominent name in the Saudi Arabian automotive industry and holds the distinction of being the first plant in the region to specialise in producing axles for heavy transport vehicles, along with a diverse range of spare parts for the automotive sector. Now in its fourth decade of service to the market, Arabian Axles remains the one and only axle manufacturer in the Middle East. The company operates from its main facility located in the Second Industrial City in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. This site serves as the heart of its manufacturing and operational activities. Arabian Axles has built a reputation for providing high-quality products and services. It emphasises the production of original spare parts through its own facilities, ensuring that each component meets the highest standards of quality and performance. Additionally, Arabian Axles is known for its excellent after-sales services and offering its array of spare parts at competitive prices. This commitment to quality and customer service has helped establish the axle-maker as a market leader in its field with fleet clients able to rely on support and parts when they need them the most. Moreover, Arabian Axles is a result of a merger between the national Foundries

Company (Masabik) and the Arabian Axles Manufacturing Company (Mahawer). It is a strategic consolidation which has further strengthened its position in the market, allowing it to expand its reach and capabilities. Talking to T&FME, general manager Mousa Alharbi, reveals how the company intends to maintain its position as a key player in the region’s industrial and automotive landscape. Thank you, Mousa. For the benefit of our readers, how did Araban Axles become the force it is?
Arabian Axles was originally founded through a technology transfer agreement with Warstein

Aachen (GmbH) in Germany to manufacture axles, their components, and spare parts for heavy transport vehicles. Arabian Axles is now a fully owned subsidiary of Maadaniyah (National Metal Manufacturing Company). Since the start, Arabian Axles has persistently endeavored to modernise its plant to produce exceptional trailer suspensions. Our foundry’s quality management system (QMS) accreditation has been maintained over 23 years and is the foundation for producing excellent products. I feel our products stand out from the competition because of our dedication to quality and continuous research and development, which result in exceptional mechanical and air suspension. Arabian Axles is well-known for its high quality, reasonably priced, and excellent service when it comes to trailers and logistics solutions and we continue to evolve. And since 2022, we are the only facility in The Middle East to be outfitted with cuttingedge automatic torque tools for optimal axle nut tightening during hub assembly. What insight can you share on how you are evolving as a business?
COLLABORATIVE APPROACH Arabian Axles’ team collectively works together to deliver world-class services. The firm follows a collaborative approach with its customers throughout their entire journey.

in minimising our clients’ workloads by offering our products ready to be fixed condition for easy installations and minimal total cost of ownership. How do you see the semi-trailer axle market evolving in terms of demand and technology?
Since the strategic plan Vision 2030 was introduced, the Kingdom’s economy has shifted away from its reliance on oil, it has given the transportation and construction industries a boost. The country aims to spend over $133 billion by 2030 as it invests heavily in its logistics sector. This overall expansion in the market and drastic shift in demand requires smart solutions in the transport and logistics industry. Thankfully, our continuous R&D ensures we are delivering innovative products which can meet future challenges.

facility with specialist welding equipment to manufacture axle beams and ultimately achieve 100% in-house manufacturing. We know this will extend the lifespan of the axle and suspension’s structural components. How do you see the current trends in the GCC and Saudi Arabian automotive industry affecting Arabian Axles?
We see a lot of market inefficiencies. Shifting consumer culture is putting tremendous pressure on firms to prioritise quantity above quality in their product offerings. On the other hand, consumers are oftern unable to distinguish between products of varying quality due to a lack of knowledge in the market or information from the distributor and supplier side. Consequently, consumers often end up being forced to pay more for inferior goods. With that in mind, Arabian Axles suspension systems are creatively engineered to provide maximum mileage, maximum performance, ease of maintenance and repair, and premium quality products at competitive, reasonable prices.
customers’ specifications for the same design, construction, performance, and durability. Our air suspension series, for example, are some of the most appreciated systems with highest driving comfort for moving sensitive materials and commodities and are the best in their class at absorbing vibrations. Amazon recruits AI to make full-vehicle scanning in just a few seconds possible

mazon has unveiled a new artificial intelligence (AI)–based technology that can spot even the smallest anomalies in Amazon delivery vans – from tire deformities and undercarriage wear to bent or warped body pieces – before they become on-road problems. The new Automated Vehicle Inspection (AVI) technology offers reassurance to fleet managers who previously had to rely solely on the human eye and manual inspections for daily safety rounds. Amazon is launching the AVI technology in partnership with tech startup UVeye in the U.S., Canada, Germany, and the UK. “The last thing I want is for something preventable to happen — like a tyre blowing out because we missed an imperceptible defect during our morning inspection,” said Bennett Hart, an Amazon Delivery Service Partner (DSP) who owns the logistics company Hart Road. “This technology improves the safety of our fleet.” The improved safety of the nearly 280,000 drivers who help deliver packages to Amazon customers through Delivery Service Partners like Hart Road is just one of the technology’s benefits. Another benefit is that AVI’s advantages can scale, which is helpful since DSP drivers deliver 20 million packages to customers every day. “One exciting benefit of AVI is the totality of insights the technology gives fleet managers,” said Tom Chempananical, global fleet director at Amazon Logistics. “It can keep track of detected vehicle issues and see if they are repeatedly happening on particular routes.” How AVI works
At the end of every workday, DSP drivers drive through an AVI archway and over a series of plates equipped with sensors and cameras. “When you go to the doctor, you expect to see a scan; we kind of do the same thing but for vehicles,” said Amir Hever, UVeye’s CEO. With the vehicle rolling at 5 mph, the AI system performs a full-vehicle scan in a few seconds, identifies problems, classifies them based on severity, and immediately sends the results to a computer. From there, a DSP can determine the fixes and services they need to perform to have well-maintained vehicles on the road the next day. “It can catch everything,” Hart said. “And it’s essentially instantaneous.” While the technology was originally invented to scan the underside of vehicles truckandfleetme.com 17 OCTOBER 2023
at borders and security checkpoints, it’s now using AI to seek more specific and minute details, such as vehicle damage. AVI relies on machine “stereovision,” meaning that it uses two vantage points to construct a full 3D image, and deep learning, a subset of machine learning in which a layered neural network mimics the learning processes of the human brain. Amazon has committed to decarbonising its delivery fleet and has rolled out more than 10,000 custom electric delivery vans across the U.S. “We couldn’t simply pull this UVeye solution off the shelf and start using it,” Chempananical said. “Recognising the unique demands of Amazon’s vast fleet of more than 100,000 delivery vans, ranging from custom delivery vans to electric Rivian vans, we worked directly with UVeye to train the AI models and algorithms in accordance with the Roadworthy Guidelines, Amazon’s rigorous standards for keeping the wheels turning safely.” A game-changer for fleet maintenance
By making inspections faster, more accurate, systematic, and objective, AVI has already found hidden damage patterns. For example, 35% of all issues stem from tires. These issues include sidewall tears and debris and nails lodged in treads, issues not easily picked up by manual inspections previously. With AVI, DSPs will receive notifications to replace tires before they turn into a bigger problem. Preventing a tire blowout or flat tire on the road improves safety and delivery experience for drivers, and ultimately, removes potential delays for Amazon customers. “The beauty of AI is that each damage is then fed back to an API that can train models and improve detection accuracy. So, the more AVI is used, the better it gets,” Chempananical said. The analytics are run through Amazon Web Services (AWS), where the terabytes of vehicle images and data are processed and stored, using Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), AWS Lambda, Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), and other services. The output is processed in less than one minute and shared via the API. Amazon has integrated the output into the existing DSP experience using the Amazon Fleet Portal and shows fleet managers the detected issues along with photos and repair suggestions. truckandfleetme.com DECEMBER 2023 17

Learning everything there is to know about the tires on Amazon fleets is just the start. Many other details are monitored with this digital microscope, including identifying potential trip-and-fall hazards on the cargo steps and spotting hazard light damage. “This technology can become the new standard for vehicle inspection,” said Hever. “Amazon always thinks about scale, and the fact that we’re now working with one of the biggest fleets in the world is helping us grow. The partnership constantly reminds us of what we have built and how to make it work in hundreds of delivery stations, dealerships, and other locations.”
COMPREHENSIVE INSIGHT AVI offers comprehensive insights, improves driver safety, and scales for high delivery volumes.
What’s next?
In the future, the technology could be used to support all sorts of delivery vehicles, from bikes to drones, and it could inspect not only the exterior, but also the interior of the vehicles. “The potential for AVI applications is huge,” Chempananical said. “It could also influence our routing and geolocation technology for when we notice repeated vehicle damage happening in the same location.” With AVI now a key part of his DSP toolkit, Hart feels confident about getting his vehicles on the road and spending less time on inspection tasks, which can now be automated. The technology has provided a pathway to grow his business,
When you go to the doctor, you expect to see a scan; we do it for vehicles”
cutting down on fleet wear and tear over the long run, and it has provided peace of mind for the hands-on entrepreneur. “There’s so much that goes into running a delivery business and properly caring for the vehicles, and manual inspections aren’t 100% accurate or objective,” said Hart. “With AVI, I know I can spend more time with my drivers and focus on creating the best delivery experience for them.” Amazon opens its own showroom
While Amazon’s fleets and its drivers are getting an upgrade to their operations, customers are about to also experience an entirely new way to purchase their next vehicle from the e-commerce giant.
FASTER DRIVER FEEDBACK The process is swift and efficient, relying on machine stereovision and deep learning.

From 2024, auto dealers for the first time will be able to sell vehicles in Amazon’s U.S. store, and Hyundai will be the first brand available for customers to purchase. This new digital shopping experience will make it easy for customers to purchase a new car online, and then pick it up or have it delivered by their local dealership at a time that works best for them. Customers will be able to search on Amazon for available vehicles in their area based on a range of preferences, including model, trim, colour, and features; choose their preferred car; and then check out online with their chosen payment and financing options — all within the Amazon experience they already know and trust. This new shopping experience will create another way for dealers to build awareness of their selection and offer convenience to their customers. Hyundai has also selected Amazon Web Services (AWS) as its preferred cloud provider to accelerate its digital transformation using broad and industry-leading AWS capabilities—from compute, storage, database, and analytics to artificial intelligence (generative AI) and Internet of Things (IoT). As part of a new multiyear agreement, Hyundai will become a more data-driven organization with a cloud-first technology strategy, migrating its current on-premises applications—which support everything across research, product engineering, and customer engagement—to AWS. globe. In addition, AWS and Hyundai designed and implemented a Master Builder training and certification program to train Hyundai engineers in critical cloud skills. “Hyundai is a very innovative company that shares Amazon’s passion for trying to make customers’ lives better and easier every day,” said Amazon CEO Andy Jassy. “Our broad, strategic partnership should do just that, from changing the ease with which customers can buy vehicles online to making it simple to use Alexa in Hyundai vehicles for entertainment, shopping, smart home adjustments, and calendar checks to enabling Hyundai to transform their customer experiences and business operations by moving to AWS. We look forward to inventing together for many years.”
One exciting benefit of AVI is the totality of insights the technology gives fleet managers”
Starting in 2025, customers who purchase Hyundai’s next-generation vehicles will be able to access the hands-free Alexa experience they have at home, while in their car. Hyundai drivers will be able to ask Alexa to play music, podcasts, or audiobooks; set reminders; update to-do lists; and check calendars. Customers will also be able to control their smart home from the road, such as asking to warm up the house on their way home, double-checking doors are locked, and managing smart lighting and Alexa routines. Drivers will also be able to ask Alexa for upto-date traffic updates or weather reports, and use voice-control with the in-vehicle media player or navigation system—with certain Alexa features accessible even when internet connectivity is intermittent or unavailable.

GM Battery technology is a new generation battery which has revolutionised the Start-Stop technology in vehicles. This has helped not only in reducing the fuel consumption in vehicles, but it has reduced the pollution in major cities, Dr Shahine Awasthy, CEO, Lubagulf, tells T&FME. Dr Awasthy, for those not familiar with AGM Batteries and the StartStop system, it would be great if you could explain the technology.
The Start-Stop system works in this way: you stop at a traffic signal or anywhere and the car detects that you are stationery as you press the brake pedal and it switches off the engine. The moment you release the break pedal the engine starts. During this period, the total load of the car system, 20 DECEMBER 2023
including air-conditioning, electronics, power steering etc is powered solely by the AGM battery and since the engine is off, there is less exhaust gases, no noise, and fuel is saved for that period. But to achieve this, a normal maintenance-free battery would not work, and you need an AGM (short for “Absorbent Glass Mat”) as it has three times the capacity of a normal battery as well as a faster charging system. Now the majority of cars from Europe and worldwide reputed manufacturers have Start-Stop technology and manufacturers are gearing up to cope up with the market demand. Lubatex Group claims to offer the best OES (Original Equipment Supplier) AGM Batteries.

Lubatex represents batteries made by Clarios, which is the world leader in battery technology as well as battery manufacturing. Clarios produces over 150 million automotive batteries worldwide, and represents the latest technology designed for battery starting power and longer shelf life, not to mention that they are all rated at OES standards, meaning the same as the OEM quality. Leading car manufacturers, such as Audi, Mercedes, BMW and Porsche use Clarios batteries as Original Equipment (OE) batteries. How is Lubatex positioned in the AGM battery market compared to its competitors?

Lubatex is also able to provide private labels for these batteries for the specific needs of certain distributors or importers, indeed for car manufacturers in the MEA region.
As the demand for AGM batteries increases organically from the Start-Stop vehicles market, the demand has surged over 30% CAGR in the last four years. AGM technology has also been adapted for more heavy-duty applications.
What trends do you see shaping the future of the AGM battery industry?
As car manufacturers are implementing Start-Stop engines in more and more cars, both for ecological regulations regarding CO2 emissions and fuel saving, cars are consuming more and more electricity (due to the airconditioning and all the other demanding options modern cars offer). The AGM battery industry is growing at a dramatic pace in developed countries. Also, keep in mind that e-vehicles also need an AGM battery as a starting and auxiliary battery. The future of the AGM batteries is therefore flourishing and will keep increasing in the coming years. What are the current focus areas for R&D in the battery technology?
The focus is always on the automotive manufacturing requirements as well as the demand while keeping in mind that the prices should be affordable to all the segments of customers. How does Lubatex innovate to improve the longevity and

The unique Spiral Cell Technology of Optima makes it so special that a battery with only 50 Ah is able to provide a cranking power of over 2.5 times compared to a normal battery of its size, e.g. a 50Ah gives a CCA equivalent to a 120Ah battery. Besides, Optima uses the purest form of lead and uses very few connectors as compared to other batteries, thus reducing the internal resistance and allowing quicker charge conductivity. Its unique design also ensures a longer life and the highest vibration resistance on the market: the Yellow Top range which is designed for construction, agriculture and mining provides 15 times more resistance to vibration than any lead-acid battery. The Optima Spiral Cell Technology also offers more reserve capacity and the ability to work even after being destroyed, thus making it suitable in armored vehicles as well as in marine and RV applications. Finally, they are used extensively in vehicles having high electrical demands.

Shell’s Haytham Yehia, general manager, Middle East and Central Asia looks at the future of the commercial road transport in the region
I
t’s evident that there are four key trends in the UAE and Middle East’s commercial road transport sector, significantly impacting developments in recent years, Shell’s Haytham Yehia, general manager, Middle East and Central Asia tells the audience gathered at the petroleum giant’s Shell Ultimate Stopover event. Intended to demonstrate Shell’s vision for the future of transportation, Yehia takes centre state at the event to discuss how he sees the region progressing at its own pace. This is a period of modernisation he says, and it is happening rapidly. The audience listens to Yehia as he captures the mood in the market and takes a look at how it will evolve in the years ahead. The talk is appropriately taking place at Dubai’s Museum of the Future. “Firstly, fleet modernisation has been a prominent trend. Companies are increasingly 22 DECEMBER 2023
upgrading their trucks and buses, leading to substantial improvements in fuel consumption, efficiency, and environmental impact. This modernisation is occurring on a large scale, with fleets directly transitioning to the latest vehicle versions,” he comments. Secondly, he adds, fleet modernisation in the market is being closely linked to digital and technological integration. The rise in e-commerce and last-mile delivery, particularly in a region experiencing rapid growth, underscores the need for operational excellence. This integration aims not only to enhance operational efficiency and reduce fuel consumption but also to improve safety and customer service experiences, essential aspects of e-commerce and last-mile delivery. “Especially in this region, there’s the rise in e-commerce and last mile delivery. Because it’s still growing in the region, there

has been need for efficiency in operational excellence and also similarly a need to reduce the fuel consumption,” he tells the audience. “This helps for last mile delivery efficiency but what’s added here are two more angles: one is the safety part - because it’s also part of the journey improving in the region. The second is the customer service experience as this is impacting e-commerce and last mile delivery is also adding value.” Continuing on, he identifies a third trend: a focus on sustainability initiatives. There has been significant progress driven both locally and by various companies, with increased collaboration leading to faster advancements. “The has been a lot of progress lately driven locally by different companies, there’s also a lot of collaboration happening and it’s going much faster especially within the UAE and a couple of the more advanced countries within the region.” truckandfleetme.com

A fourth trend concerns the future evolution of the region’s commercial road transport (CRT) sector. With ample capabilities, technology, and market demand, there’s a strong foundation for rapid development and transformation in the sector. “There are capabilities. there is technology, there is market demand. and this will build up to make sure that the commercial transport sector will evolve quickly. Addressing local responses to these trends, Yehia argues that there will be a continued importance for diesel and lubricants, even amidst the shift towards electric and other alternative fuels. Locally, efforts are focused on two aspects: showcasing proof of concept and advanced technology, and practical implementation to support the average trucker and fleet: “There was a question asked earlier about the average trucker and the average fleet and how can we also help them to develop…(I believe) there’s still huge opportunity within that space.” Yehia was keen to emphasise that the firm he represents will be able to help fleets in the region by concentrating on three major initiatives: Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), its own portfolio development and scalability. Solutions like Loop Advisor and remote wearable technology for maintenance optimization have shown promising results. For example, one UAE customer effectively doubled their oil drain interval, significantly reducing operational costs and environmental impact: “Remote wearable technology helps optimise the maintenance costs and uptime. Lube Analyst is another solution which Shell has deployed. The lubricant condition monitoring system provides round-the-clock expert diagnosis for optimised equipment performance. Customers have access to over 100 tests, providing detailed insights and preventative maintenance advice to reduce downtime and improve performance. They also get round the clock access to their own diagnosis reports, and can track equipment performance over time, as well as access the wider Shell database through a dedicated portal. “One of our customers in the UAE has been using Lube Analysis, and improved the oil drain interval from around 7,500 kilm to around 15,000 km. That’s double, right? And that’s for a basic fleet customer.” The introduction of advanced products like the R6, a low-viscosity lubricant, can also help reduce fuel consumption and environmental impact, stresses Yehia. “R6 is an example of one of our truckandfleetme.com
It’s a thrilling time for the industry, and we’re eager to engage in discussions about its future trajectory”
advanced products which have low viscosity and helps, again, with reducing the fuel consumption. And it, accordingly, helps to reduce the environmental impact. Yehia argues that scalability is key to realizing the full potential of these initiatives. Through partnerships with local distributors, these solutions are made accessible to a broader range of customers, enhancing their impact across the sector, he says. “Last but not least, in whatever we’re doing, the biggest value comes when you scale it up right. We are asking ourselves, how can we reach more customers? Our distributors to reach out to different fleet customers to make sure this actually happens, so we reach more and more customers and serve them with both either the products portfolio or services, or even sustainability initiatives. While Shell’s local perspective emphasises a balanced approach, leveraging both advanced technology and practical solutions to support the sector’s growth and sustainability, globally it is working

with a range of partners such as Scania to develop the next generation of transport. Parminder Kohli, SVP, EMEA Shell Lubricants, says the event is an opportunity to look at Shell’s impact on the industry developments that are shaping a cleaner and more efficient future and learn how businesses can successfully adapt in this fast-changing landscape. “We are eager to open a dialogue about the what the future of this industry will look like,” he explains. “We’re also here to recognise and celebrate our fantastic CRT Community from the customers, to oems and other channel partners. I think we can all agree that the last few yearshave been particularly tough for our industry and we have faced many challenges but it’s great to come together and look at what we have achieved despite all these challenges. “This sector is undergoing a rapid transformation, presenting both opportunities and challenges. The changes are diverse, driven by evolving technologies and market conditions worldwide. It’s a thrilling time for the industry, and we’re eager to engage in discussions about its future trajectory.” One of the highlights for Kohli, is the unveiling of Starship 3.0, the latest iteration of Shell’s initiative that showcases modern technology and advanced lubricants in class A trucks. This initiative demonstrates what is achievable in the future of commercial road transport. The global transport landscape is witnessing significant changes. China’s introduction of Stage six emission standards for heavy-duty vehicles and India’s adoption of Bharat Stage 6, based on Euro 6, are pivotal developments, he says. “In terms of lubricants, we’ve seen a rise in advanced products like synthetic axle oils and super-efficient engine oils. These innovations are crucial for efficient operation and sector decarbonisation. This cannot be achieved overnight, and will require us to all work together.” Looking at the industry’s challenges, Kohli says CRT faces a sizable task. The number of heavy-duty trucks is projected to nearly double by 2050. With heavy-duty vehicles accounting for a substantial portion of global road transport emissions, yet only representing a small fraction of the total vehicle population, the sector faces a daunting challenge. The industry is becoming more fragmented due to macroeconomic factors, varying regulations, technologies, fuel solutions, and infrastructure, he warns: “Our responses must be tailor-made to fit these diverse market conditions.” DECEMBER 2023 23

CONTINENTAL BREATHES NEW LIFE INTO OLD TYRES TYRES
Continental, a pioneer in the tyre and technology sector, unveile a groundbreaking installation during November’s Dubai Design Week. Named the ‘Circle of Trust’, this unique exhibit aimed to transform discarded tyres into powerful symbols of human trust. Continental has collaborated with the acclaimed artist Moey to create this thought-provoking display. This artistic venture probes the core question: ‘Who do you trust?’ and does
so through an innovative medium. The installation breathes new life into discarded tyres, each inscribed with thoughts on trust gathered from over 100 individuals, including public figures and media representatives. These interviews, conducted by Moey, infuse the tyres with a deeply personal touch, turning them into canvases of human emotions and beliefs. Jose De La Fuente, Managing Director of Continental Middle East, emphasised the company’s commitment to sustainability. “We
believe in giving discarded tyres a second chance, just as we believe in the power of trust. The Circle of Trust symbolises our dedication to trustworthiness and environmental responsibility in the tyre industry.” The artist Moey, a UAE-based conceptual artist who has called Dubai home for 15 years, brings his unique vision to this project. His art reflects the UAE’s rich tradition as a melting pot of cultures and his commitment to his adopted country. Moey’s work celebrates diversity, unity, and community involvement, resonating with themes of inclusivity and shared human experiences. Continental’s ‘Circle of Trust’ stands as a testament to the transformative potential of upcycling. It showcases how utilised tyres can evolve from waste into a source of inspiration, creatively highlighting environmental consciousness. This initiative paves the way for a cleaner, more dynamic world, one tyre at a time, aligning perfectly with Continental’s vision of a sustainable future. DECEMBER 2023 25

A TALE OF
TWO VOLVOS
Volvo Cars and Volvo Group may now be two different companies, but they share more than a name when it comes to electric vehicles (EVS)
T
hough operating in different segments of the vehicle market, both Volvo Cars and the Volvo Group are actively advancing in the field of electric vehicles, albeit with distinct strategies and product focuses tailored to their respective markets. Since the split in 2010, Volvo Cars, has built on its reputation for safety and innovation, and taken the bold step towards a sustainable future by committing to become a fully electric car company. This decision reflects a growing trend in the automotive industry towards electrification, driven by increasing concerns about climate change and environmental sustainability. The Swedish automaker, known for its high safety standards and quality, aims to capitalize on the rapid advancements in electric

vehicle (EV) technology and battery efficiency. Volvo’s move to go fully electric is not just an adaptation to emerging market trends but a proactive strategy to lead the charge in the EV revolution. By doing so, Volvo is setting itself apart as a brand committed to environmental stewardship and technological innovation. This transition involves significant changes in manufacturing, supply chain logistics, and customer service dynamics. Volvo must ensure that its electric vehicles maintain the high standards of safety, reliability, and performance that the brand is known for. Furthermore, the shift requires substantial investment in new technologies and retraining of the workforce, demonstrating Volvo’s commitment to not just adapting to change but leading it. Another critical aspect of Volvo’s strategy is the development of a robust charging infrastructure and after-sales services for electric

vehicles. This approach is vital for customer confidence. This transition also comes with challenges. Volvo faces stiff competition from established players in the EV market, as well as new entrants who are solely focused on electric vehicles. Additionally, the global supply chain for EV components, especially batteries, is increasingly competitive and complex, requiring strategic partnerships and investments. It has consequently doubled down on going electric, and recently announced it would be withdrawing some of its more popular models, to make way for its fully electric equivalents. In the UK, for instance-, the company has confirmed it is axing the S90, along with the V60 and V90 Cross Country estates – and all versions of the XC40 plug-in hybrid have been removed from sale in the UK. Talking to car magazine Top Gear one spokesperson explained. “We are rapidly truckandfleetme.com

transforming our product offer, which means not only moving towards full electrification, but also shifting to new platforms and technologies across all our cars. We will naturally need to evolve and consolidate our line-up as we prioritise fully electric cars and make this technological transition. Representing the popular UK online car marketplace Cinch, motoring editor Sam Sheehan, says the move won’t be popular with all motorists: “While Volvo’s efforts in turning fully electric are admirable, it’s also true that some people aren’t quite ready to make the switch from petrol or diesel just yet. Hybrid models like the XC40 PHEV offer an ideal halfway house, while for others, Volvo’s petroland diesel-powered Cross Country estates and S90 saloon models can’t be beaten,” says Sheehan, advising that: “The march to offering a full range of electric cars is well under way, but you needn’t be rushed into following it. While Volvo Cars’ decision to go fully electric is a significant milestone in the automotive industry, marking a shift from traditional internal combustion engines to a more sustainable, electric future. For companies like Cinch, this opens up an opportunity. “Handily, Cinch still has several nearly new examples of these popular cars available from a selection of hundreds of Volvos,” says Sheehan. It has been over 13 years since Volvo Cars split from Volvo Group, and the leading Swedish truck manufacturer, has recently made a significant move in the electric vehicle (EV) industry by acquiring the battery business of Proterra Inc. This acquisition, valued at $210 million, was finalised after Volvo emerged as the winning bidder in an auction for Proterra’s assets. Proterra, a US-based electric bus and battery manufacturer, had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection prior to this acquisition. This context highlights the strategic nature of Volvo’s acquisition, allowing truckandfleetme.com

the company to expand its capabilities and assets in the EV sector at a crucial time. The acquisition of Proterra’s battery business is a significant step as it aligns with a broader strategy to strengthen its position in the EV market. By integrating Proterra’s battery technology and expertise, Volvo aims to enhance its electric vehicle offerings, particularly in the commercial vehicle segment. 2023 has seen Volvo accelerate its focus on electrifying heavy vehicles, a sector that has significant implications for reducing carbon emissions in freight and mass transportation. It has even launched The first-ever heavy-duty electric truck range in the Middle East & UAE, the Volvo FH HeavyDuty Electric Truck, through FAMCO. The acquisition of Proterra’s battery business in November represents a strategic investment in the future of electric mobility,
positioning the company to take a leading role in the evolving EV landscape. This acquisition not only bolsters Volvo’s technological capabilities in electric vehicle production but also reflects the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability and innovation in the automotive industry. Alastair Hayfield, Senior Research Director at market intelligence firm, Interact Analysis, says that the firm has been following the story for some time. “When Proterra filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy we predicted that it would make sense for a legacy OEM to acquire the business and integrate it in to their own,” says Hayfield. He notes that Volvo Group has aggressively pursued an electrification strategy across all lines of its business - trucks, buses, off-highway and engines - and has purposefully created a reporting division focused on energy. “Volvo is the only European manufacturer to be in the global top 10 of electric truck manufacturers and is very likely the leading OEM for electrified construction equipment,” says Hayfield. “This acquisition makes perfect sense as it will enable Volvo to ‘go faster’ with its electrification strategy and give it a battery manufacturing facility to support its US operations. What is not clear is whether Proterra’s agreements with other OEMs will remain. For example, Komatsu Construction had an agreement in place for the supply of batteries and it is unknown at this point if that will continue.”
A CHANGE OF DIRECTION Volvo Cars has been launching a fully electric car every year as it aims to make all-electric cars 50% of global sales by 2025, with the rest of its line-up as hybrids.

THE GREAT
DE-CAB-ONISATION Electric TX has prevented emissions of more than 111,000 passenger flights from London to Sydney
L
ondon Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC)’s revolutionary electric TX taxi has prevented more than 200,000 tonnes of harmful CO2 emissions from entering the earth’s atmosphere since its launch in 2018. This remarkable CO2 saving is the equivalent to the emissions of more than 111,000 passenger flights from London to Sydney. A stack of thousand CO2 tonne spheres with a 5x5 base would stretch half a mile high – 8.4 x the height of Big Ben - and be equivalent to filling 42,749 Olympic swimming pools. In addition, LEVC’s TX has travelled more than 700 million miles globally, with the company producing more than 10,000 of its revolutionary electric TX taxis, which have been sold throughout the world. In London, the TX has now overtaken the diesel-powered TX4 as the most common
black cab, with more than 7,500 TXs operating on the streets of the capital. Alex Nan, CEO of LEVC, says”This remarkable achievement demonstrates the success of our electric TX since it launched in 2018, and highlights the positive contribution it is making to the air quality of our cities. “LEVC is incredibly proud to support the taxi trade, as it transitions to a clean, safe and accessible mobility future. The business is committed to creating more sustainable cities through innovative and accessible mobility solutions, as part of our new strategic direction to become a zero carbon mobility technology company.” LEVC’s TX is an accessible and inclusive vehicle for all, regardless of age or disability. Featuring flexible space for up to six passengers, the vehicle includes an integrated wheelchair
ramp enabling the TX to accommodate a forward-facing wheelchair – the only taxi of its kind to do so. The TX’s eCity technology provides a pure EV range of 78 miles and a total range-extended capacity of 333 miles. As well as reaching the significant emission saving milestone, this year also marks the 200th anniversary since the first Hackney carriage was licenced in London, and 75 years since the first ‘black cab’ as we know it, was born – in the form of the FX3. Today’s TX now provides sustainable transport to both drivers and passengers in more than 20 countries. LEVC manufactures the purpose-built, range-extended electric TX at its state-of-the-art facility in Ansty, Coventry. With an investment of over £500m from the Geely Holding Group since 2014, LEVC has built the UK’s first dedicated manufacturing plant for electric vehicles.
