A NIGHT TO REMEMBER

At the beginning of this month, Truck & Fleet Middle East magazine hosted its second Awards evening – and what a night it was to remember. Set outside and under the lights on the beach-front of the Ritz Carlton JBR in Dubai, this was a chance to gather some of the leading lights in the market and celebrate a lot of the good work that is underway in the region.

Three months ago, we went out to the market and dared them to put forward what they consider to be the very best of the best of their vehicles in one of the biggest votes of its kind ever conducted in the market. And when I say the Best of the Best – I mean it.

These were the ones that are at the pinnacle of their engineering prowess, their industry knowhow, the ones that drive theirs – and the allimportant fleet sector’s – businesses.

10,000 votes were received in total. That’s 10,000 different opinions from the market of what they feels is THE best vehicle for their needs as we begin a new era in transportation and mobility in the region.

The Truck and Fleet Awards 2023 is much more than a vehicle showcase too. Distributors and manufacturers alike have were tested and rated by our voters in the search for the finest services and solutions in the market.

And most importantly, we got to honour fleets from a huge array of sectors that are delivering world-class, safe and sustainable services to the region. A thank you to our judges who gave their Fleet of the Year verdict leading to MICCO’s win but also accolades for the other nominees.

This was a night to bring together two sides of what I consider the great and good of the fleet industry in the UAE and beyond.

And while we may have had 150 people under the stars of the Ritz Carlton, the night was an evening for the cast of thousands of people who took part in the voting from across the entire region.

We recorded 10,000 votes this year. Almost twice as many as last year. So if you were nominated that means your work is not going unnoticed. In fact, it is being highly appreciated. So well done to all of you.

We should all be proud of the amazing work in the market: Proving that finding the bottom line doesn’t have to be at the expense of driver safety and more than ever sustainability. We all know we can go further. Do more. Be greener. But I’ve never felt more confident that we can be ready for the challenges ahead and play our part in making our world a better place for the next generation.

Tadweer signs off on five operations contracts worth over $544 million

WASTE MANAGEMENT

Tadweer has signed five operations contracts with a value of over AED 2 billion during this week’s EcoWaste 2023 event in Abu Dhabi.

The contracts, which were signed with Alphamed Abu Dhabi LLC and Terberg RosRoca Vehicle Manufacturing, Beeah Sharjah Environment Company LLC, Averda Waste Management LLC, and JV Lavajet Al Ain/Nael & Bin Harmal Hydroexport LLC (NBHH), cover solid waste collection and transportation services, public cleaning services in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, and waste containers management and maintenance in

Abu Dhabi, said the firm. It added that the six-year contracts aim to” make a big leap in the quality of services and environmentfriendly services by providing electrical equipment for waste collection and transportation, cleaning services for main roads and automatic sweeping, and training programs for employees to ensure that their work complies with international standards.”

The contracts were all signed during the EcoWASTE 2023 Exhibition and Forum.

Tadweer added that it is also exploring cooperation opportunities in transforming solid municipal waste selectively

into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and the potential of converting waste into fuel and sustainable chemical materials. The company also signed a MoU with Beeah Sharjah Environment Company LLC to explore new cooperation opportunities for waste management overseas.

“Tadweer is constantly seeking to cooperate and establish partnerships with global stakeholders, to exchange best practices, success stories and innovative solutions for the sector. Through these partnerships,” said Eng. Ali Al Dhaheri, CEO, Tadweer. “We aim to join our efforts and utilise the best

practices to overcome waste management challenges, by raising the public’s awareness, and addressing challenges related to waste collection, transportation, and treatment.”

“The 9th edition of EcoWASTE was a massive success. It was attended by experts and specialists in waste management, who explored the leading role of the GCC countries in promoting a circular economy. It was also an opportunity to discover solutions to overcome the waste crisis in the MENA region, raise the public’s awareness about the sector and encourage them to protect the environment by reducing waste.”

CALL FOR MORE REGIONAL COORDINATION

WASTE MANAGEMENT

On the sideline of EcoWaste 2023, representatives of UAE and the GCC municipalities proposed the establishment of a joint committee to exchange best practices, success stories, challenges and innovative solutions in the region’s waste management sector. The proposal came during a roundtable for the UAE and GCC municipalities, organized by Tadweer, which was chaired by Eng. Ali Al Dhaheri, Chief Executive Officer of Tadweer, and attended by representatives of municipalities and waste management experts in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar. The roundtable covered cooperation opportunities to achieve sustainable waste management and invest in the sector to support regional economic growth.

Participants in the roundtable highlighted the importance of enhancing coordination among GCC municipalities, and establishing a team of specialists to learn from global best practices in waste management, and carry out programs and initiatives to prepare for hosting the COP 28 conference. In addition, they proposed the establishment of a joint committee to exchange best practices in the waste management field.

The roundtable addressed the challenges facing GCC countries in the waste management sector, and the efforts required to overcome the increase in the volume of waste due to the ongoing urbanization of cities in the region. Participants also highlighted the steps which have been taken to address these challenges in the region.

Eng. Ali Al Dhaheri, CEO, Tadweer, said: “The Company is committed to leading the change in waste management.”

UD TRUCKS CELEBRATES 30% GROWTH IN 2022

the waste management and construction sector in the UAE.

TRUCKS

UD Trucks says it has continued its journey of exceptional growth throughout the Middle East, East, and North Africa (MEENA) region by registering an average of 30% growth for the second year in a row. This boost strengthens its position as a market leader in a largely Europeandominated regional truck market,

says1 the Japanese truck manufacturer. There were positive stories for UD Trucks right across the region over the past 12 months. Sales of heavyduty trucks in Qatar were up by 35% thanks to the brand’s reputation for producing robust and modern trucks. This also contributed to UD Trucks’ steady performance in other key segments, including

Saudi Arabia, UD Trucks’ largest market by volume, enjoyed a 32% increase in sales, and the brand has now expanded into every segment, from construction and logistics to waste management. The brand is now involved in a large number of Kingdom-wide projects – many of its partners are involved with the NEOM project.

In Africa, specifically in Ethiopia and Uganda, UD Trucks delivered a significant number of vehicles primarily intended for general cargo use, despite the hard economic conditions and currency shortage. In 2023, further countries are set to be added as the brand continues with its plans for expansion on the continent.

POLESTAR MEETS ITS 2022 GLOBAL TARGETS

ELECTRIC VEHICLES

Polestar Automotive Holding

UK, the Swedish electric performance car brand, says it delivered approximately 21,000 vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2022, bringing the preliminary estimate for full year global volumes to 51,500 cars, up 80% year-on-year. In 2023, Polestar anticipates global volumes to increase by nearly 60% to approximately 80,000 cars, led by strong Polestar 2 sales, and later in the year the first deliveries of Polestar 3.

“I’m proud of the many milestones we achieved in 2022 and in particular the massive team effort that went into delivering our strongest quarter to date – surpassing our 50,000 global volumes target for the year. We are now fully focused on 2023. There will be the usual quarterly variations, but I’m confident that we will continue to actively manage our supply chain to meet the growing demand for Polestar 2, commence first deliveries of Polestar 3 and

launch Polestar 4,” says Polestar CEO, Thomas Ingenlath. In October, Polestar officially revealed the Polestar 3, its first electric performance SUV. The Swedish firm says that Scandinavian minimalism and purity work together with the key ingredients of a sport utility vehicle, “defining the SUV for the electric age.”

Polestar expects to post its unaudited preliminary estimates of its financial results for the year ended December 31, 2022 on Thursday, March 2, 2023.

BMW GETS

PHYGITAL

The BMW Group shared its vision of the future digital experience, both inside and outside the vehicle, at last month’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023 in Las Vegas. BMW i Vision Dee is the futuristic mid-size sedan with a new and pared-down design language. The name “Dee” stands for Digital Emotional Experience – and that is precisely its aim: to create an even stronger bond between people and their cars going forward. Future digital functions will go far beyond the level of voice control and driver assistance systems we are familiar with today. The BMW Head-Up-Display extends across the full width of the windscreen, providing a glimpse of the next vehicle generation. From 2025 onwards, this innovation will be available in the models of the NEUE KLASSE. The BMW Group has also refined its use of colour-change technology. Having unveiled the BMW iX Flow Featuring

E Ink, with the ability to change from black to white, at the last CES, BMW i Vision Dee can now curate its exterior in up to 32 colours.

“With the BMW i Vision Dee, we are showcasing what is possible when hardware and software merge. In this way, we are able to exploit the full potential of digitalisation to transform the car into an intelligent companion. That is the future for automotive manufacturers – and, also, for BMW: the fusion of the virtual experience with genuine driving pleasure,” said Oliver Zipse, chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG. “At the same time, BMW i Vision Dee is another step on the road to the NEUE KLASSE. With this vision, we are looking far into the future and underlining the tremendous importance of digitalisation for our upcoming product generations.”

With its intelligent, almost human capabilities, BMW i Vision Dee accompanies drivers not only through real-life situations on the roads, but also in their digital environment.

“A BMW lives by its unparalleled digital performance. BMW i Vision Dee is about perfect integration of virtual and physical experiences,” said Frank Weber, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Development. “Whoever excels at integrating the customer’s everyday digital worlds into the vehicle at all levels will succeed in mastering the future of car-building.”

A mixed reality

The BMW Mixed Reality Slider, in combination with the advanced Head-up Display, is the digital highlight and central operating control of BMW i Vision Dee. Using shy-tech sensors on the instrument panel, drivers can decide for themselves how much digital content they want to see on the advanced Head-Up Display.

The five-step selection ranges from analogue, to driving-related information, to the contents of the communications system, to augmented-reality projection, right up to

entry into virtual worlds. In parallel, dimmable windows can also be used to gradually fade out reality. Mixed reality can be experienced in BMW i Vision Dee in an immersive way that engages different senses without requiring any additional tools, creating a new dimension of driving pleasure for the user.

The BMW Group is known in the automotive sector as a trailblazer for the Head-Up-Display and has systematically refined this technology over the past two decades. In BMW i Vision Dee, projection across the entire width of the windscreen allows information to be displayed on the largest possible surface – which only becomes recognisable as a display once it is activated. In this way, the BMW Group demonstrates the huge potential of projection technology and BMW i Vision Dee visualises how a advanced Head-Up-Display could also be utilised in the future for the display and operating concept. The standard-production version of the BMW Head-up-Display extending across the full width of the windscreen will be used in the models of the NEUE KLASSE from 2025 onwards.

The digital experience already begins outside the vehicle, with a personalised welcome scenario that combines graphical elements, light and sound effects. Natural language serves as the simplest, most intuitive form of interaction, enabling perfect understanding between humans and their vehicles. The headlights and the closed BMW kidney grille also form a common phygital (fusion of physical and digital) icon on a uniform surface, allowing the vehicle to produce different facial expressions. This means BMW i Vision Dee can talk to people and, at the same time, express moods such as joy, astonishment or approval visually.

BMW i Vision Dee can also project an image of the driver’s avatar onto the side window to further personalise the welcome scenario.

Following the debut of the BMW iX Flow Featuring E Ink at CES 2022, the BMW Group is now unveiling a full-colour version of the E Ink technology in BMW i Vision Dee that will be used as the outer skin of the vehicle for the first time worldwide. BMW i Vision Dee, rather than simply alternating between black and white, now showcases a multi-coloured, fully variable and individually configurable exterior. An ePaper film from the BMW Group’s cooperation partner, E Ink, is applied to the body to create this magical display of colour. Up to 32 colours can be displayed.

The body surface of the BMW i Vision Dee is divided into 240 E Ink segments, each of which is controlled individually. This allows an

almost infinite variety of patterns to be generated and varied within seconds. The laser cutting process used to trim the films and the electronic control design were developed in partnership with E Ink. The adaptation of this technology for curved surfaces and the programming of the animations, were developed by BMW Group’s in-house engineers – enabling a form enabling a form of customisation that is unique throughout the automotive sector worldwide.

The design of BMW i Vision Dee has been deliberately pared down to focus attention on the digital experience and the DNA of the BMW brand. The exterior is defined by the

classic three-box sedan design that forms the core of the BMW brand. Traditional design elements, like the BMW kidney grille, twin circular headlights and the Hofmeister kink, are reimagined, with phygital icons replacing analogue elements. This gives BMW i Vision Dee its own digital, but human, character.

Inside, digitalisation goes hand in hand with reductive use of materials, operating controls and displays to ensure nothing distracts from the digital experience and the new feeling of enhanced driving pleasure. The unconventional design of the steering wheel, with its central vertical spoke, creates touchpoints that come to life when approached or touched and can be operated by moving the thumb. These phygital touchpoints control selection of the content projected onto the windscreen and, together with the Head-Up Display, thus support the principle of “hands on the wheel, eyes on the road”.

“With BMW i Vision Dee, we are showing how the car can be seamlessly integrated into your digital life and become a trusty companion. The vehicle itself becomes your portal to the digital world – with the driver always in control,” said Adrian van Hooydonk, head of BMW Group Design. “Implemented the right way, technology will create worthwhile experiences, make you a better driver and simply bring humans and machines closer together. The future of the BMW Group is electric, circular and digital. BMW i Vision Dee represents the digital aspect of this trio and will be another milestone on the road to the next vehicle generation, the NEUE KLASSE.”

MEMS

THE WORD

Sensors are ubiquitous. They allow cars, e-bikes, smartphones, fitness trackers, and headphones to sense their environment. Bosch develops and manufactures smart sensors that make life safer and more convenient. And these sensors are becoming ever more efficient, which helps protect our planet.

Bosch is a pioneer and market leader in microelectromechanical (MEMS) sensors – one of the most important and widely used sensor types today. We started production of MEMS sensors in 1995.

“In the past five years, we have produced as many of these sensors as in all the years before that,” said Tanja Rückert, member of the board of management at Robert Bosch GmbH, at CES 2023 in Las Vegas. Since it began manufacturing them 27 years ago, the technology company has produced a total of more than 18 billion MEMS sensors; today, there are an average of 22 of them in every car.

Bosch is currently the top MEMS sensor

manufacturer, according to Yole Group, a market research and strategy consulting company. By 2027, global annual demand for such sensors is expected to grow from 33.5 billion now to around 49 billion units. Bosch also wants to share in this growth and expects a further significant increase in production figures in the years ahead. Rückert emphasized that the company wishes to remain the market leader and expand its leading position even further.

To meet growing demand, Bosch is investing heavily in its wafer fabs in Dresden and Reutlingen. Overall, the company plans to invest three billion euros in its semiconductor business, and thus also in sensor development and manufacturing, by 2026 as part of its investment plan. In its work on microelectronics and communications technology, it will draw on the European IPCEI ME (“Important Project of Common European Interest on Microelectronics”) funding program.

Sensors are at the heart of modern technology and the backbone of the connected world. They make vehicles safer, save lives every

day, and help protect both the environment and human health. This makes them a crucial technological basis for all Bosch business areas – and they are also the focus of the sequel to the digital image campaign, under the tagline “Sensor tech #LikeABosch.” “With the help of sensors, we can take technology that is ‘Invented for life’ to a new level. They not only improve people’s quality of life but also reduce the environmental footprint of our smart everyday companions,” Rückert said.

MEMS sensors first went into widespread use in the automotive industry. Bosch has remained one of the leading sensor manufacturers for this industry. Bosch sensors help with vehicle navigation, they control airbags and ESP systems, and they enable a wide range of assistance functions that enhance driving safety, comfort, convenience, and efficiency. For automated driving in particular, sensors are indispensable. They are, so to speak, the “eyes” with which cars can “see” and understand their surroundings. Bosch sensors are paving the way for the

driverless car. It already offers a range of radar, lidar, video, and ultrasonic sensors for automated driving. But MEMS sensors also play a central role in consumer electronics. For instance, pressure sensors in smartphones can pinpoint a device’s altitude to within a few centimeters. In an emergency, for example, this means first responders know very quickly which floor a person in distress is on. The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) estimates that such pressure sensors save 10,000 lives a year in the US alone.

At CES 2023, Bosch presented several new sensor-based innovations for mobility –including the RideCare companion solution, which won a Best of Innovation Award from the industry association CTA. The RideCare companion will play a critical part in the enhancement of safety for all vehicle occupants in connected and automated mobility. The connected hardware and software solution consists of a camera, a wireless SOS button, and cloud-based data services. Vehicle drivers can use it to contact Bosch associates around the clock should an accident or other dangerous situation occur. In the event of an incident, the Bosch associate can look into the vehicle via camera, assess the situation, and, if necessary, quickly request assistance. The RideCare companion serves as a valuable safety net, especially for cab or ridesharing drivers.

Off-zone crash detection also promises greater safety on the road as the system protects vehicle occupants in the event of side collisions, which often occur when changing lanes or crossing intersections. Smart sensors combined with a new software algorithm quickly and reliably detect the exact angle of impact in

the event of a side collision and trigger the life-saving airbag in time to mitigate the consequences of an accident. “Our off-zone crash detection is a great example of how we use software to get more out of existing hardware. This creates an appreciable additional benefit in road transport,” said Mike Mansuetti, president of Bosch in North America, at CES in Las Vegas.

Qntum sensors offer ‘great’ potential Bosch is also living up to its pioneering role in the development of new sensor fields: quantum sensors will be one of the emerging fields of innovation in the years ahead. They could soon enable measurements that are 1,000 times more precise than those of today’s MEMS sensors. This would, for example, permit easier and more accurate diagnosis of

neurological diseases. Bosch founded its own startup last year to drive the commercialisation of quantum sensors and develop this market.

As a broadly diversified technology company, Bosch is advancing the development of promising technologies in many fields and positioning itself for the future: “In the next three years alone, we will be investing ten billion euros in Bosch’s digital transformation. Our current workforce of 40,000 software engineers will also grow,” Rückert said.

Climate action and sustainability are top priorities for Bosch. “For the future of our planet, it’s essential that we all commit to living increasingly energy-efficient lives. At the same time, climate change is driving technological progress at our company – including in sensors,” Rückert said. At CES, Bosch is presenting the next generation of MEMS sensors. They are more accurate, more robust, and more power-efficient than previous models.

The programmable and AI-enabled BHI360/BHI380 inertial sensor, for example, which adapts to the wearer’s individual movements when installed in fitness trackers, is half the size and consumes half the power of its predecessor. The same applies to the new BMV080 particulate sensor, which measures the concentration of particulate matter and pollution in the air and, with its space-saving design, is up to 450 times smaller than products currently on the market. And then there’s the BMP585 barometric pressure sensor, which measures a change in altitude of a few centimeters and can thus detect individual pull-ups or push-ups: it requires 85% less energy and has increased its robustness by a factor of three compared to the previous generation.

NATIONAL AUTO PARTS TAKES OVER AS PIRELLI’S SAUDI DISTRIBUTOR

National Auto Parts (NAP) has signed a distribution agreement with Pirelli which places the Jeddah-based firm as the new distributor for Pirelli tyres in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. An agreement for the deal was recently signed in Milan, Italy, between Kalyana Sivagnanam Petromin GCEO, and Khaled Jnifen, CEO of Pirelli for GCC, Middle East, Africa, and India.

The Petromin subsidiary says this partnership means it becomes a one-stop-shop for wholesalers and independent garages, with multi-brand auto parts solutions.

The deal is a major coup for the distributor which only formed in October last year. It has set out to play a key role in the region, creating a digital marketplace promoting customer convenience and trust, and says the agreement plays a pivotal role in positioning NAP as the “partner of choice” for the KSA market.

“We are extremely excited about this collaboration. Petromin and Pirelli are two of the most trusted realities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” said Kalyana Sivagnanam, group CEO, Petromin Corporation.

“Both partners have their equities aligned and are relied upon in terms of quality, technology, and sustainability, catering to whole-sellers, retailers, and individual car owners in the Kingdom. Petromin’s reputation in the markets that it serves is endorsed by its customers and stakeholders. This is based upon our strong foundations, established 50 years ago, since the company’s formation in 1968.”

Pirelli’s Khaled Jnifen added: “We are thrilled with this promising and exciting partnership with NAP, especially since it comes at such an important period for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”

LUBRICANTS

PETRONAS Lubricants International

(PLI) has revealed it has been co-developing fluids for IVECO’s new zero-emission eDAILY vehicles. It claims the fluids are designed to “maximise performance and enhance sustainable solutions for the commercial automotive industry”. The long-standing collaboration between the two industry leaders, grounded in automotive innovation and resilience since 1975, has resulted in thousands of hours of co-engineering, producing the highest-quality standard of lubricants to meet the needs of IVECO drivers. The new fluids demonstrate both PLI and IVECO’s common goal towards achieving a sustainable future.

Described to be the ‘electric twin’ of IVECO’s iconic ‘Daily’ vehicles, the eDAILY covers all commercial vehicle usage applications –including heavy-duty missions and conversions. The new EV represents

a significant contribution to the decarbonisation of transport vehicles for commercial use, backed by fluids that improve performance to make vehicles last longer.

PETRONAS Iona Integra Plus has been developed for the eDAILYs e-Transfer box, specifically designed to reduce churning losses, whilst ensuring the durability of the system. This is comparable to higher viscosities in standard fluids

and ensures excellent oxidation properties, even in the case of high temperatures. PETRONAS Iona delivers optimised performance and durability for modern-day, highlevel EVs. DHL EXPRESS TRIALLING PUNCTURE-PROOF TYRES

TYRES

Nearly 50 DHL Express vans will begin running on the Michelin UPTIS airless tyre to make last-mile deliveries in Singapore by the end of 2023. The pilot programme bagan with the first vehicles making the first delivery trips this week. Thanks to a partnership between DHL and Michelin, Michelin’s airless prototype tyre, has taken another step forward.

One year ahead of schedule, the very

first Michelin UPTIS tires are now marketed in real-world conditions.

The Michelin UPTIS prototype is a puncture-proof wheel/tyre assembly with no compressed air and is intended for cars and light vans. The air has been replaced by a revolutionary structure capable of supporting the vehicle. This ensures the wheel’s robustness and guarantees driving comfort and safety. It was designed as a plug-and-

play solution that allows users to drive conveniently and not worry about road hazards impacting the tires. It also limits the number of tires scrapped due to punctures.

With the Michelin UPTIS tire, DHL can optimize its fleet’s productivity and ensure business continuity, as tyre pressure issues and punctures are eliminated. This will lower the frequency of tyre replacement, leading to less wastage.

“As a pioneer in green logistics, we are excited to partner Michelin to trial its airless tires on our vehicles in Singapore. To drive sustainability efforts here, we have since converted 80 vehicles in our ground fleet to electric vans.

“This collaboration marks another milestone for us as we set out to green our last mile operations and achieve net-zero carbon emissions across the DHL network globally,” says Christopher Ong, Managing Director at DHL Express Singapore.

Electric Vehicle Strategy 2021

From an estimated 3.3 million units in 2020 to an expected 27.5 million units by 2027, the global Electric Vehicles (EVs) market is witnessing a quantum leap, led by the U.S, China, and Germany. Globally, the potential of the lucrative EV industry is immense with an expected market share of 58 per cent of all global vehicle sales by 2040.

In the Middle East, EVs are already transforming the auto industry, which is expected to reach a value of $18.5 bn by 2023 and is set to reach mass adoption within the next couple of years.

A recent EV sectoral study by the Investment Promotion Agency Qatar

(IPA Qatar), explored how Qatar’s strategic location and resources are supporting the Gulf state to become an EV manufacturing hub for the MENA region and beyond. Industry leaders in EV manufacturing, from Volkswagen to Gaussin and Yutong, have already partnered with government entities to transform Qatar’s – and the region’s – mobility. Similarly, international transportation company and IPA Qatar partner, Accord Pitch Doha (APD), has set several milestones in the local EV market, becoming the first company to deliver the Mercedes EQV Class and hybrid Mercedes S class in Qatar, whilst also planning to invest $10 million in 2023 to expand its fleet of electric vehicles.

It comes as no surprise that foreign investors are highly motivated, Bloomberg has projected the EV market to be worth $53 trillion by 2050.[3] For many, Qatar, with its ambitious e-mobility targets, future-ready infrastructure, and extensive government support, offers a valuable and competitive business climate to tap into the EV market.

Next to consumer sentiment, commercial viability and OEM vehicle strategy, government policies have emerged as a major driving force behind EV mass adoption. In Qatar, the country’s national vision provides a roadmap for its social, economic, environmental, and human development. By extension, initiatives to transition to green mobility receive strong

5 KEY FOUNDATIONS SUPPORTING THE GROWTH OF QATAR’S EV INDUSTRY:

1. Extensive government support Ambitious EV targets and support mechanisms through regulation, R&D, funding opportunities, and setting up facilities for e-mobility investors

2. Private sector investment in EV National champions including Qatar Foundation, Hamad International Airport, and Lusail City investing in EV

3. Ambitious e-mobility targets

• 25% EV public transport by 2022 with 100% expected by 2030

• ~15K public charging stations by 2030

• 10% EV sales by 2030 as a share of all sales

4. Qatar’s attractive market already attracting EV manufacturers Volkswagen, Gaussin, and Yutong already partnered with government entities to transform Qatar’s as well as the region’s mobility

5. Ready infrastructure and incentives

government backing in a country that has already set a target to achieve a 25% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and convert all public buses to EVs.

In fact, Qatar’s relatively new ‘Electric Vehicle Strategy 2021’ wants to go a step further and create long-term opportunities for EV investors and businesses. By 2030, it foresees EV sales to reach 10% of total vehicle sales numbers in Qatar.

In a region of 49 million vehicles, an innovative approach to the automotive industry will be imperative to drive us towards a sustainable future. One study found that emissions from EVs are up to 43 per cent lower than diesel vehicles, effectively playing into the Paris Agreement’s CO2 reduction targets.

The current investment flow into the EV market focuses on battery access, light-weighting, and safety, and charging accessibility; however, the value pool increases significantly when looking at auxiliary sectors, from battery recycling businesses to the semiconductor market.

For Qatar, the green transition has begun. EVs will add an important fiscal layer to the 2nd most competitive economy in the Arab World and the 4th globally by GDP per capita. About 2 billion people, worth $6 trillion in combined GDP, live within 3,000 km of Qatar’s borders, yet – in the years and decades to come – the country’s unparalleled EV market access and connectivity will reach well beyond this mark.

Meet the UAE micromobility start-up that is getting serious funding

Last month saw Terra, a B2B micro-mobility tech start-up, reveal that it is preparing to introduce its fleet of electric motorbikes with a swap and drive operations model for food delivery customers. Established in 2021 by serial entrepreneur Husam Zammar, Terra has been described as a groundbreaking project that he has worked towards his entire career to date.

Alongside Zammar, a ‘top-notch team’ with experience across global and regional tech titans such as Google, Careem and Uber is said to be diligently developing Terra’s software. Advised by the global law firm Latham & Watkins, the start-up successfully secured pre-seed investment funding from a global network of Saudi, US, and UK angel investors ‘that share the same vision enabling the firm to progress forward’.

For the past five years and especially after the pandemic, the UAE and the wider region have experienced exponential growth in the food delivery market and increased the demand for commercial two-wheelers. Having developed an energy-efficient motorbike combined with a ‘first-of-its-kind swap and drive’ subscription model in the region, Terra is piloting in the UAE, engaging with leading private enterprises contributing to the country’s thriving economy.

Combined with corporate bike rentals, Terra’s Smart Swapping Stations will be set up across the country allowing drivers to book and switch bike batteries through the platform’s mobile application. The solution enables companies to decrease their carbon footprint with reduced carbon dioxide (C02) emissions. At the same time, time efficiency, cost/overhead reduction, driver tracking, and

limitless range improve operational efficiency, claims Terra. “With a business mission centred around revolutionising the standard transportation system towards sustainable and innovative mobility, Terra’s electric motorbike fleet is a solution to the rising use of its petrol-fueled counterpart enabling progress and changing one motorbike at a time,” Hussam Zammar, CEO & Founder of Terra.

“To compensate for one tonne of CO2, approximately 40 trees are needed to reduce the carbon footprint. One petrol powered delivery motorbike emits around 10 tonnes of CO2 per year, meaning we would need 400 trees per bike. The UAE has upward of 60,000 petrol powered bikes commuting each day, can you imagine the size of forest required and the amount of water that would be needed to even make a dent in offsetting this?” Concluded Zammar.
