THE JOURNEY BACK TO NORMALITY

A
fter a year of uncertainty, it’s good to see that things are beginning to look a little brighter. To use the age-old cliché, there is light at the end of the tunnel. That said, it would be foolish to think we can just carry on where we left off, resume our lives as though the global pandemic never happened, as if the deadly virus didn’t sweep across the world like a fearsome tsunami. For a start, it’s impossible to ignore the death toll (over 2.5 million) and the physical, emotional and financial devastation left behind by COVID-19. Despite the shocking statistics, there are those who still believe it is all one big hoax, a simple case of fake news. Others are taken in by a web of conspiracy theories, convinced the virus was artificially created and used as a bioweapon. Other conspiratorialists claim that those in power are using the pandemic as an excuse to inject spying software into an unsuspecting population. Whatever your take on the subject, the last twelve months have been undeniably challenging. Emerging from the pandemic will also be a challenge. Again, opinions will differ. Some will be impatient to get on with their pre-COVID lives. They will be eager to book a flight, travel abroad, attend concerts and sporting events. They will wave goodbye to their facemasks, throw out their hand sanitizer, forget the words ‘curfew’ and ‘quarantine’ ever existed. The more prudent individual will, perhaps, holiday locally, continue to wear a mask in public, adhere to social distancing. Provided everyone pays heed to the advice, the journey back to normality should be relatively safe. It’s important to remember, however, that we are all different and that people’s attitudes and ideas will vary. Coupled with the fact that one country’s vaccination programme will differ greatly from another, an element of caution is still required. Personally, I have no intention of boarding a busy flight or a crowded train until I am absolutely certain it is safe to do so. If this means I’m unable to visit a foreign country for the rest of the year then so be it. Granted, the travel industry has suffered just as much as any other (if not more) but ploughing money back into the local economy and enjoying a so-called ‘staycation’ is still, I believe, a step in the right direction. My guarded approach is, I suspect, shared by many. Whilst I am
keen to re-establish my social life, I’m also a little apprehensive about re-joining the big, bad world. If lockdown has taught me anything, it is to appreciate my surroundings and be thankful for what I have. I was lucky enough to be able to work from home during the enforced lockdowns, something I consider a privilege rather than a hardship. Emerging from this safe, comfortable cocoon will, I fear, be somewhat daunting. At the other end of the scale, those of a more audacious nature will be dashing out to coffee shops, restaurants and fashion stores with the cavalier attitude of ‘you only live once’. This is not necessarily a bad thing – the economy needs these carefree spenders – provided they are COVID compliant. It will be interesting to see if our spending patterns return to their pre-virus high. Released from the habit of buying new clothes, shoes and fashion accessories, many of us have come to realise that we don’t actually need any more of these things. Our wardrobes are already full, crammed with enough garments to open our own store. Buying more would be frivolous, superfluous and (possibly) damaging to the environment. But that’s a different story. Such extravagance serves to highlight the dire situation of those in need and the fact that charities have also suffered at the hands of COVID-19. With so many people losing their jobs or having their income curtailed, the amount of money donated to registered charities fell significantly during the last twelve months. Fund-raising events were cancelled and charity shops were forced to close. Like many businesses, these not-for-profit organisations will struggle to recover from the long-term effects of the virus. Something to bear in mind when you’re rummaging through your wardrobe. Returning to the subject of the local economy, it’s my intention to support as many small, local businesses as I can. Unfortunately, some have already ceased to exist, victims of the pandemic that chased away consumers and forced them to close their doors. Those fortunate enough to remain, still face a long period of uncertainty and will rely on the continued support of their customers if they are to survive the recovery period intact. Regardless of our differing opinions, varied spending and diverse holiday intentions, it’s clear that vaccinations are the key to this long-fought battle with COVID. So let’s roll up our sleeves and start the judicious journey back to normality. www.cpmagazine.net

The LINE LA
The LINE LA is located in the heart of Koreatown where decades of Korean, Latino, and American heritage converge (authentic Mexican blankets and Korean snacks can be found in the rooms). Originally built in 1964, the LINE LA embraces its mid-century design and heritage, and celebrates the culturally rich neighborhood it’s tucked in. Since the hotel’s opening in 2013, it has become a destination for urban explorers and creatives. The LINE LA also gives back to the community, and has partnered with philanthropic organizations like Alexandria House, a resource for women and children without housing and World Central Kitchen for communities in crisis.
Hotel June
Wood tones and boho décor make up Hotel June, which pays homage to its SoCal roots. Just a stone’s throw away from LAX, the mid-century modern hotel building has a laidback aesthetic, complemented by a soothing color palette. Don’t sleep on viewing the pieces from the artist in residency every month. As part of a Proper Hospitality Hotel, Hotel June’s mission is to donate 1% of their time, hotel space, and management fees toward the betterment of the surrounding communities. In 2021, they are working to fight homelessness in the city.
Best for Couples
Rejuvenate in this luxury modernist retreat with its own private desert-style cactus garden. This eco-friendly guesthouse is equipped for sustainable living via solar electric power, solar radiant floor heating and organic bedding …very on-brand for Venice, CA. The host suggests lighting a fire in the outdoor fireplace and relaxing in a lounge chair under the stairs in the evening. 14
MARCH 2021
Grand Central Market
This is the place to find L.A.’s best bites under one roof. Grand Central Market opened in 1917 and never looked back. The Market has always reflected the changing population of downtown Los Angeles. In the 1920s, the Market was an open grocery. The 90 stalls back in the day included green grocers, fishmongers, Jewish delis, and butchers. Today, the Market is a destination dining spot with 40 of Los Angeles’ most exciting culinary concepts. ‘Evolution’ has been a through line for the market’s dynamic lineup of vendors over the decades, as downtown Los Angeles evolves, Grand Central Market evolves with it. Our favorite places to graze at the Market: PBJ. LA, Sarita’s Pupuseria and Sticky Rice.
Night + Market
Night + Market is an animated Thai spot with a menu that features the classics. It’s almost impossible to go wrong at this restaurant, but you may order a dish that’s spicier than expected. As long as you have a cold drink nearby, and you’re not ashamed to sweat a little, all of their dishes are a must-try. The best part about this place is its backstory — a local kid opened his own Thai restaurant attached to his parents’ old place on Sunset. Today, there are three locations around LA.
Milo + Olive
Milo & Olive is a neighborhood bakery and pizzeria created by a husband-and-wife team. The menu is a reflection of the best ingredients available from local farmers and vendors with sustainable practices and it represents the team’s continued commitment to truly seasonal, market-driven cuisine. Additionally, their coffee is from a local artisan roaster. There’s no wrong answer when it comes to pizza at Milo + Olive, but the Burrata & Prosciutto di Parma is a game changer. The garlic knots and homemade dipping sauces are also mouthwatering. Their fresh bread, pastries, coffee, hot breakfast, pizza, wood-grilled veggies, handmade pasta, and more are all available for you to salivate over.
Grab a car and venture out a bit. Just don’t leave during rush hour!
Visit Ojai
Ojai is a charming small town located in Ventura county. If you plan on exploring it for a day, don’t forget to hit up these spots. Pop into Bart’s Books, an open-air bookstore (literally) that is a booklover’s heaven. Fuel up at Farmer and the Cook, an organic market and bohemian café with a large patio serving vegetarian Mexican cuisine.
Take a Trip to Denmark
Solvang was birthed after Danish immigrants made their way west and eventually settled in the Santa Ynez Valley. Although there aren’t many Danes in Solvang anymore, you will find wooden windmills and rural houses. You’ll also find an assortment of Christmas shops, Hans Christian Andersen and Little Mermaid keepsakes, and Danish bakeries around town.
Eat a Doughnut that Gives Back
Treat yourself to a delicious donut from Sidecar Doughnuts. They make their doughnuts fresh every hour and claim to have the ‘world’s freshest donuts’. Sidecar fries the doughnuts in small batches all day long, for a warm, fresh treat (we recommend their signature Huckleberry). On the first of every month, Sidecar drop a few seasonal flavor options (in addition to their 11 daily flavors). Gluten-friendly and vegan options are available. The shop also gives back to the community via The SideCares program, which donate leftover sweets to local food banks and shelters. www.cpmagazine.net

UNDERSTANDING
COVID-SOMNIA Dr. Nazia Nausheen
The Coronavirus pandemic has changed everything, Year 2020 will be remembered as a transformative year of the 21st century. The world has stalled during this pandemic as it has compelled people to reduce their direct contact with each other and confined them in their homes, only to contact others maintaining a careful distance or through socializing digitally. This was a gross and unprecedented behavioral change. Additionally, the uncertainties of the future as well as our daily lives continue to weigh heavily and impact our minds and bodies. So, it is not surprising that it has affected the sleep pattern and sleep schedule worldwide.
16
MARCH 2021
What is COVID-Somnia? Covid-Somnia- higher levels of sleep disturbances due to the COVID-19 pandemic. it can include everything from difficulty sleeping, disruptive sleep, waking up early, or not getting a good restorative sleep due to anxiety and stress.
Causes of COVID-Somnia: Several factors may be triggering these unusual sleep patterns:
Daytime napping and excessive use of electronic media especially at bedtime are other possible causes.
What can you do about COVID-Somnia? Focusing on your sleep habits can often help you improve the quality and quantity of sleep you are able to get. Such as:
Establish a sleep schedule. Set consistent times that you go to bed and wake up every day, even on weekends. Close the blinds and turn down the thermostat. Focus on making
Stress: People are suffering from shifts in their sleep patterns due to their fears about getting the virus, concerns about loved ones, not being able to go to work, not having social contact with others, or fear of losing their jobs.
Disruption of daily schedule:
your bedroom quiet, dark, and relaxing. Many experts recommend keeping the temperature in your room cooler, around 65°F, for optimal sleep.
Turn off electronics. If you can, remove the temptation to engage in
screen time by making bedrooms a no-electronics zone – that includes TVs, computers, and yes, your smartphone. If the news on social media is causing emotional stress, consider limiting your time on apps that make you feel anxious or angry, also because blue light sends signals to the brain that you should be awake.
Essentially, COVID-Somnia results from interference with our daily patterns. People who once commuted to work may be working longer shifts (healthcare workers, for instance), working from home, or not working at all (due to unemployment or furlough). Children of all ages have replaced their brickand-mortar schools with online learning. Stay-at-home orders, quarantine, and isolation have drastically disrupted everyday life.
Be mindful of food and drink. Caffeine and large meals can disrupt sleep. Keep meals light before bed and consider snacks to promote sleep such as certain nuts, and herbal teas. Try to stop eating at least two hours before bedtime.
Inadequate exposure to sunlight:
Exercise. Studies have shown doing regular exercise but not immediately before going to sleep, can help improve sleep patterns.
People are not leaving their homes because of fear of COVID-19 or due to lockdown, if they are not going to work as they once did, then they are not getting that daily exposure to sunlight in the morning. That can disrupt their internal clock.
Disturbed sleep patterns:
Ultimately, when the pandemic comes to an end and people can return to more normal routines, a good night’s sleep will be more than just a dream. When that happens, then perhaps we can put the term COVID-Somnia to rest, too. www.cpmagazine.net

FEBRUARY MARCH 2021 2021
Please introduce yourself to our readers. Fazeela Gopalani, Head of ACCA Middle East, Wife, Mother of 2, born in Malawi, raised in the UK and now living in the UAE. I live by the saying “if you fail to plan, your planning to fail”. Tell us about your education. I studied for my Bachelor’s degree at the University of Birmingham and followed this with the ACCA Qualification along with attaining my MBA from University of Strathclyde. What or who motivated you to choose finance and accounting as a field of study? Accounting in my blood thanks to my father who was an ACCA member and ran a successful accounting practice in the UK, providing professional financial services to a variety of clients who were private individuals, small businesses and large enterprises. It was a simple decision for me to follow in his footsteps. From an early age I was convinced of the power of the ACCA qualification and I truly believe that working for ACCA and inspiring others to follow this career path is the utmost tribute to my father. What does your role as the Head of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) in the Middle East entail? As Head of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) in the Middle East, I’m responsible for leading the operations in 11 countries and representing more than 20,000 students, affiliates and members across the region, who work in all sectors and all levels of business across the Middle East. One of my fundamental roles is as a thought leader and a conversation starter for all things “accounting and finance profession”, in the Middle East, with the purpose of growing the understanding of the value that professionally qualified accountants bring to businesses and economies across the region. Managing and building strategic relationships with regulators, business leaders, partners and the ACCA Middle East stakeholder network to influence debate and conversation around key issues that impact the ongoing economic development of the region is a core part of my role. Alongside linking up the challenges within the accounting world in the Middle East and shining a light on global topics such as sustainability, the audit regulatory environment, digital innovation with the profession and elevating the need to promote and advocate women in the finance function. I work closely with many educational institutions and government bodies across the region to encourage new generations to not only understand the importance of the almost pandemic proof profession, but the significant role a professionally qualified accountant plays in building economies, thus encouraging the next generation to consider and undertake a career in accountancy and finance, whilst raising the importance of the financial literacy agenda being embedded at an early age.
Through my leadership I ensure that, ACCA is seen as a force for public good and remains true to its core values of building a sustainable global profession by re-investing surplus to deliver member value by leveraging our respected research, continue to answer today’s questions that prepares us for tomorrow, actively encourages continued professional development and continues to shape and develop the accounting and finance profession for the next generation. How and when did you land in Dubai? I came to the UAE in 2009 with my family, having sold my successful practice in the UK and looking for my next challenge. I love living in the Middle East, for me it’s home and I’ve never looked back. Can you update us more about the ACCA’s value in Kuwait? How many students annually register for the ACCA qualification from Kuwait? The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) is a professional qualifications body based in the UK and widely recognised across 176 countries in the world. We offer class leading accountancy qualification to students who are committed and motivated. We have a worldwide reputation for excellence and our rigorous qualifications are recognised and respected across the globe. When students chose to study with ACCA, they can take their career in any direction, open doors to the best and most interesting roles all over the world. And become one of the sought-after finance professionals this fast-changing world needs. As a leading Accountancy Qualification we are ever so proud to be the first choice for students and professionals within the Middle East region in helping them shape their careers. In Kuwait ACCA stands as a highly recognised qualification for anyone who wishes to pursue a career in Accountancy and Finance. This is owed to our strong relationships with key educational partners, employers and relevant bodies in the country. We have hundred’s of students each year pursuing ACCA qualification post finishing high-school or university. What are the latest updates with the ACCA certification? ACCA understands that in this ever-changing global environment young people require resilience and adaptability – skills that are proving to be essential to navigate effectively through whatever situations arise and part of her education agenda is to provide insights and tools that enable the next generation to possess some of the most important skills that employers will be looking for such as creativity, communication and collaboration, alongside empathy and emotional intelligence; and being able to work across demographic lines of differences to harness the power of the collective through effective teamwork. ACCA believes that accountancy is a cornerstone profession of society that supports both public www.cpmagazine.net
21
and private sectors. That’s why we’re committed to the development of a strong global accountancy profession and the many benefits that this brings to society and individuals and why Fazeela acts as a conversation starter raising awareness around the integral role that accountants play to businesses and economies particularly within the Middle East using adoption of VAT, IFRS Changes, public sector moving from cash accounting to accrual accounting, embedding Islamic Finance and not forgetting to mention business sustainability during this current pandemic as validation, given the professions lead on this areas. What differences do you see in the accounting practices in the Middle East and in the UK? In most Middle Eastern countries, MNC’s and Local Entities are subject to or adopting IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) and must prepare their accounts accordingly. While local GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) is aligned to IFRS, it is here and in taxation that key differences emerge. The Middle East’s alignment to IFRS for accounting purposes makes financial reporting in the region quite streamlined for companies. Private entities need to follow the local GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), but in most countries it is aligned to IFRS. Differences do exist however, and one source of difference is the fact that IFRS as adopted by the region is sometimes behind the actual IFRS standards. This is because the region goes through an endorsement process, and this can result in a gap of approximately six months between the implementation of a new standard, and implementation in practice. What options are available for students to study online due to the Covid-19? Studying with ACCA is convenient and flexible with the option to learn at your own pace and at a time to suit you. ACCA offers multiple study options whether it be full or part time. Study options include: Face-to-face Studying for a professional qualification is a big commitment, so face-to-face tuition delivered to a group of fellow students at an Approved Learning Partner’s premises is an excellent way to stay motivated and on track. As you learn the syllabus during the course, your chosen provider may teach you one or more of the ACCA exams, helping you practise questions and master exam techniques in preparation for the exam. Online learning Online learning gives you the flexibility to organise your study and complete coursework in your own time and is a great option if you are working full-time or have no access to face-to-face tuition. You could study completely at your own pace or you 22
MARCH 2021
could take a ‘live’ classroom option – with online classes scheduled at specific times. Blended learning Blended learning courses use a combination of face to face tuition and online learning. This allows students the opportunity to partly control the time, place and pace of their learning whilst still having an element of face to face interaction with a tutor. What tips can you give students to get the best results using the online studies from home? What are some of your hobbies? I’m an avid reader and would love to own my own coffee/book shop and tuck myself away in the corner drinking coffee and reading. When I’m not reading I’m very much in to fitness, walking, trekking, cycling and running. Being so busy I’ve recently started practising mindfulness – It's helped me learn to be present and clear my thoughts. What are some of your favourite hangout spots in Dubai? If I’m not home enjoying my family time in my garden, or baking a few treats, you’ll no doubt find me trekking along one of the many UAE beautiful hiking paths. There is so much to explore. What advice would you give to students looking to make a career in accounting and finance? The recent pandemic has highlighted the importance of the accounting and finance professionals. Accountants become the communicators of the future and not only are you entering a career path that is in demand and almost recession proof, you also have the freedom to move between industries and even become your own boss as it embraces an entrepreneur mindset. We know that students go on to become the heart of any organization with the unique ability to work in an all-inclusive role that functions across the entire organization and maintains the wellbeing of the company. Be sure to choose the right qualification that will take you places, will demonstrate that its more than just numbers. Its about being prepared with practical examples that allow you to confidentially apply the theory in to the real-life workplace immediately. Your message on this International Women’s Day I would say, think differently and think big! Believe in yourself and your capabilities and don’t let others shape and define who you are. Be authentic, and genuine in everything you do. Challenge that negative voice in that head and find your own voice and be who you want to be.

26
MARCH 2021
F
rom the 80’s Highlander films and TV series to Star Wars to just about every samurai movie, I have always imagined being a sword fighter and swinging cardboard tubes or sticks around like I was the heroes on screen. I came across Sword to Sword of Houston and schedule six classes to learn German Longsword. I was excited to imagine myself in epic battles against knights in shining armor and duels to the death.
We started with footwork and fundamentals of cutting. Nathan was able to have me slicing and dicing in no time at all. The lessons really become super fun and tiring when we would do sparring drills. Sometimes we would only use gloves as try to hit each other. It was very challenging because Nathan is so swift and dexterous. When we switched to using swords, it was nearly impossible to land a hit on him. Yet I eventually managed to get some lucky cuts in in our last session.
My private lessons were given by Nathan Grepares who began studying German Longsword at Sword To Sword in 2009, and since then has travelled to Europe a number of times for training and competition. Nathan is an internationally renowned fighter with good standing in the world HEMA scene. In 2014, he placed fourth in Swordfish, the world’s most prestigious Longsword competition. What made the lessons very special was not only the act of sword fighting itself, but the wealth of knowledge and history that Nathan was able to teach me about this art. How the old German transcripts were meticulously translated to preserve the techniques and style of fighting. It really opened my eyes to the beauty and brutality of the art of sword fighting. Find out more about Nathan and Sword to Sword at SwordToSword.net.
Follow my journey online at FormerlyMe.com and on the YouTube channel. Next month I will cover my return to Legacy Barbell and Gene Labrada for more weight training. ALL ABOUT CHANEL 2.55 FLAP BAG The First Shoulder Bag
In February, 1955 Chanel released the iconic 2.55 Quilted Handbag- the most widely recognizable handbag, ever, in the world. Gabrielle Chanel created a bag that she needed herself: an accessory which freed up the hands. In February 1955, Chanel changed handbag history forever: she introduced the 2.55 Quilted Handbag with chain straps. For the first time, it was acceptable for women to carry a bag on their shoulders. The name 2.55 is based on the date of its creation: “2” for February, the second month of the year and “55” for 1955.

Firstly, Chanel sold the original 2.55 flap for $220. The stitched diamond quilted pattern in the exterior of 2.55 was inspired by equestrian accessories and the patterns Chanel saw around stables. The exterior pocket was inspired to Coco from a love of the Mona Lisa and made the back pocket reminiscent of her subtle smile, which is said to be for loose change for tipping. The burgundy/garnet leather inside the original 2.55 was the color of the uniform that Chanel had to wear at the Aubazine orphanage where she was raised. It is easily recognisable by its turn-lock — also known as the “Mademoiselle lock”. Chanel invented a new style of shoulder strap inspired by men’s military satchels, worn across their chests. Chanel wanted the chain straps to look like jewelry with the convenience of a satchel for the modern woman. Coco Chanel distilled her innovation as such: “I got fed up with holding my purses in my hands and losing them, so I added a strap and carried them over my shoulder.” Chanel released an exact copy of the original 2.55 in February 2005 in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the creation of the original. Though the name "Reissue 2.55" should apply only to those commemorative handbags it is now commonly used as a name for all the handbags resembling the original 2.55. www.cpmagazine.net

Why did you choose art history as your Major at Sorbonne?
I studied art history and archeology, focusing on western art and Islamic art, and minored in communications. I was always interested in arts when I was younger; however, studying Art history was eye-opening. I never realized its importance until I majored in it. The art of the past shows us how people have seen themselves and their world and how they wanted to show it to others. Studying Art history and archeology Helps Us Understand the changes in the world and How the Society We Live in Came to Be. Because only through studying the past can we comprehend the present.
How was learning at Sorbonne like?
Studying at Paris Sorbonne Abu Dhabi was an extraordinary experience. It is a university known for its important heritage and prestigious for arts and humanities subjects. Subjects are taught in French, so learning French was a must to continue studying my major. Sorbonne Abu Dhabi attracts students from all over the world to seek the benefits of their 760 years of academic excellence. I could’t be prouder to graduate from such a university where students are not only taught to learn and study but to participate and leave an impact in the world.
How and when did you start your interest in art?
Art has always been an essential part of my life, even before studying it. Practicing art was more of a hobby. Whether in school in art classes or back in university in the art club, I was actively involved in the creative and art world, with the desire of knowing and exploring new exhibitions, Museums, or even exhibitions.
When did you start your podcast “TART” and tell us more about it.
I started my podcast in September 2020. During the lockdown, I called it TART, which means talk Art. Previously I used social media to talk about art, but it was not enough. And since I listen to podcasts daily, starting an art podcast made total sense. I always had the vision to create a platform that educates the public about art history and the art world, and TART does precisely that. it caters to art lovers and individuals who are not familiar with the art world to make art accessible and within reach.
What impact you are looking for from your podcast ”TART”?
In the past ten years, the art scene has been growing in the middle east. Art is now interwoven within our culture, yet many people are intimidated by Art or find art elitist, complicated and incomprehensible. I started TART because I wanted to simplify Art, to make it as relatable as possible. And to clear it from the typical clichés that we continue to live on.
Can you describe the importance of art, What it means to keep you studying it? And its importance to society? Humans were and will always be connected to art, From prehistoric cave drawings to our contemporary times it is an important part of our existence. And since Humans have been creating art since the beginning of time we cannot deny that it is a natural human behavior. If you give a child a crayon and a paper they’ll immediately start creating an abstract work And since creativity is a human behavior, it should be appreciated. I see art as an international language, it’s a way of documenting and preserving our history tells a story about society and how our cultures were. Giving us insight and different perspectives.
What’s your intake about art in the middle east?
Middle East has an important art scene, What I like about Middle Eastern artists is the diversity of creation and their vigorous appetite for art .Even if we are in the same geographical zone, one will always see and find something unique. Whether it's because of the variations of cultures, Traditions or the fast changes happening. All of these factors make this region incredible with its diversity and breadth.
How can art be understood? What is the best way to understand art.
In order to understand anything in life, one needs to step out and ask questions. Art should be treated the same. Without reading or having prior knowledge it would not be easy to understand art, its history or significance. Visiting museums and art exhibitions is a great way to learn more about the art world. If one is ever at a museum, I recommend having a tour with an art educator or specialized guide to provide the best experience possible. Art needs accepting minds, minds that are willing to analyze, to question and criticize. If you are 34

not questioning is then you are not learning. And learning takes a confident person. For more techniques and ways to understand Art, you can listen to Episode 1 of my podcast “Museum culture”.
What impact is digital globalization having on the art industry? I believe that digital globalization is now more important than ever. Specially during the pandemic, many museums and institutions closed their doors, yet there was always a search of fast alternatives and rapid solutions to keep the public engaged with art and culture. Either by their websites or through their social media. Museums around the world has seen positive feedback for the public. For example, the Louvre website used to get 40.000 visitors per day before the pandemic. During the pandemic the number has increased to 10x more. The Louvre websites gets 400,000 visitors per day during the lockdown. Which means that the public are still interested in art and culture despite what is going on in the world. Therefore, I see that digitalization has proved its positive impact as it continued the dialogue between the arts and the public specially during a global pandemic.
Why do you love what you do? I love what I do because it always leave people amazed and wanting to know more whenever I explain an artwork. An artwork may look boring in a museum until one tells its story, and it completely changes the way you look at the artwork. Once we relate an artwork with a story and put it into its historical context, the public automatically sense it in its true value and importance.
Which are some of your favorite art museums around the world? For the greatest collections of modern and contemporary art my favorites are Palais de tokyo & Louis Vuitton foundation in Paris AND THE MAMAC in Nice, France. The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam which is dedicated to the works of Vincent van Gogh. And finally The Musée Rodin in Paris which was opened in 1919, primarily dedicated to the works of the French sculptor Auguste Rodin.
What is your greatest indulgence in life? The answer is simple, Good coffee and fine chocolates. And of course a day at the spa.
What are some of your other hobbies? Reading is definitely one of my favorite hobbies, I lean towards history or historical novels or even philosophy. I prefer reading in Arabic because of the richness of the Arabic language. For philosophy I love reading for the Egyptian philosopher Dr. Mustafa Mahmoud, or the Iraqi Dr. Ali Al Wardi and for novels, I admire the novels of Ahmed Murad.
What would you say is your top arts-related recommendation (book, website, resource) at the moment? There are so many resources I would recommend, but my favorite book for art lovers is "The Art book” by DK. It explains all the art movements in the simplest way possible. “30000 years of art” by Phaidon is also one of my favorites it has More than 600 works from all periods & regions. I would also recommend “The art assignments” channel on YouTube and finally my podcast “TART” which you can find on Spotify and apple podcast.

6 WAYS TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR WORKOUT ACCORDING TO RESEARCH
38
MARCH 2021
Fatema AlOthman
1. Lift weights If you just do cardio, you’re sabotaging yourself, Your metabolism will actually go down, making weight loss more difficult. Resistance training, however, builds muscle to increase your metabolic rate. Those who spent 20 minutes a day weight training gained less abdominal fat over the course of 12 years. 2. Listen to music Everyone knows that your
favorite tunes can fire you up for a workout, Music boosts the body’s levels of serotonin and dopamine, hormones that are known to foster recovery. Try listening to a few of your favorite, most relaxing tracks as soon as you finish your workout. It will help your blood pressure and heart rate get back to normal and recovery happen ASAP.
3. Swap stretching for a dynamic warmup Don’t stretch in vain. people who
warmed up with light leg extensions and squats were able to squat with 8.36% more weight during their workout than if they had performed typical “bend and hold” stretches. The same thing happens with your muscles and tendons. However, dynamic bodyweight moves increase blood flow and improve your range of motion without compromising your muscles’ and tendons’ elastic properties. So for instance, if you’re about to go for a run, it’s a good idea to move through about five to 10 minutes of lunges, knee raises and leg swings before hitting the treadmill.
4. Preface your workout with carbs You
might think of carbo-loading as something you do to run a better marathon. But eating carbs before your workout can also help you during those intervals, Carbs are your body’s primary fuel for any high-intensity workout, and when your body is fueled, your body is going to put forth a better effort and get a better value, both in terms of caloric expenditure and muscle growth, than it would if you were in fasted state.
5. Do intervals Minute per minute, highintensity intervals periods of all-out effort interspersed with short, low-intensity breaks come with more cardiovascular and fat-loss benefits than any other workout, people who performed a 20-minute interval workout with exercises including pushups, burpees, squats and lunges burned an average of 15 calories per minute, To burn similar calories, follow the workout’s protocol: Perform as many reps as possible for 20 seconds, rest for 10 seconds and repeat for a total of four minutes. Rest one minute, then repeat for a total of four rounds. 6. Drink water we find that many people are
dehydrated when they show up to the gym, We recommends everyone drink ½ to 1 ounce of water per pound of bodyweight per day. To make sure you’re drinking enough water during your workout to replace any fluids you lose, weigh yourself both before and after a sweat class, You shouldn’t be losing more than 2% of your bodyweight. www.cpmagazine.net

Tell us about your education.
I graduated with Distinction from Kuwait English School in 2003 and gained a scholarship to attend the University of Dundee in Scotland where I completed my Bachelor of Dental Surgery. After practicing dentistry for a few years, I felt that I wanted to pursue a more specialised career in Orthodontics. I got accepted to study Orthodontics at the prestigious University College of London and I jumped at the opportunity! Not only because UCL is an excellent school but it is also located in the heart of my favourite city, London. I obtained my Master of Clinical Orthodontics from UCL in 2014 and my Membership in Orthodontics from the Royal College of England in 2015. I could have very easily come back to Kuwait with these highly respected degrees; however, I had a feeling I could do more and was motivated to have a more specialised degree to distinguish me from the rest of my collogues when I came back to Kuwait. I decided to pursue a Fellowship in Orthognathic Orthodontics which is a field in Orthodontics that focusses solely on patients who suffer not only from problems with alignment of their teeth but also have more significant issues with their jaws that have led to the problems in alignment. Their treatment commonly involves braces and surgery to their jaws to correct these problems. During the time I was undergoing my fellowship I also decided to become a licenced Botox and Filler provider. I wanted to be able to provide my patients the full package when they came to see me. And that is indeed what I do now.
What got you into medicine and motivated you to pursue a career in dentistry?
Ever since I was a child, I had a passion for science, I always knew I would pursue a career in the field. When the time came for me to decide which specialty to pursue at university there were two factors driving me. I wanted to study in the UK and I wanted to be in the medical field. I applied for medicine, dentistry and pharmacy. My name came up in the newspaper a few days later stating that I had been accepted to study pharmacy in the UK so I decided to take up the offer and go ahead. Shortly after I arrived to the UK, the Kuwaiti Cultural Office sent me a fax (yes I am that old!) with all of my details including the specialty I had been sent to the UK to pursue. That very day I received a phone call from the student advisor at the cultural office saying that I had filled out Pharmacy as my specialty when all my documents from Kuwait came stating that I was accepted to study dentistry. Turns out there was a typo on the newspaper! So I decided to pursue dentistry. I didn’t choose. I guess it was always meant to be!
What is your area of expertise?
Orthodontics – braces in all forms, metal, ceramic and Invisalign Surgical Orthodontics – correction of jaw problems that need surgical intervention along with braces Facial botox and fillers
What kind of common dental problems do patients come to you with?
Mostly people come to see me with problems with the alignment of their teeth, crooked teeth, spaces between their teeth and sometimes issues with biting or chewing. What my patients do not realize is that they come to see me mostly because they are insecure about their smile. They come to me seeking confidence. What could be better than being able to give people back their confidence? I create smiles for a living! It simply does not get any better than that.
What advice would you give to our readers for better maintenance and hygiene of their teeth?
Its very simple – eat well, make healthy choices and reduce 46
MARCH 2021
intake of refined sugars. Brush your teeth twice a day, not less than 3 minutes every time. Floss at night before bedtime and see your dentist for a regular check up every 6 months.
Tell us about some of your most difficult experiences?
I would have to say managing peoples expectations is the most difficult situation I find myself in every day. With clear communication and experience, this has become a lot easier!
What type of work do you do the most of?
I am mostly providing Invisalign treatment – clear aligner orthodontic therapy. It has become a lot more popular now for people especially in their 30s and 40s who feel “they’re too old” for regular braces. For the record, I don’t think anyone is too old for braces! Studies show that people will get the impression that you are more intelligent and aware of the health benefits of taking care of yourself if you have braces on compared to having crooked teeth and not doing anything about it.
What’s the most popular thing people come in and want to have done?
There are so many issues that people come to me with. A lot of children come to me because they are being bullied at school because they have crooked teeth, teenagers come to me because it is fashionable to have braces (not all of them!), adults come to me because they want a better-looking smile or because they need to improve their bite due to health issues that may have affected their teeth over the years.
What are some key signs that someone needs the help of a cosmetic dentist?
This is a quite common misconception that people have. There is no such thing as a cosmetic dentist. We are all trained to treat our patients and do no harm. There has been a trend lately to get “cosmetic dentistry” done. In most instances there are other underlying issues with the health of the teeth that need to be treated with veneers which are perceived as cosmetic treatments because the result ultimately provides the patient with a better-looking smile. However, it is quite simple! If you are unhappy with the way your teeth look or feel insecure about your smile, go see a dentist!
What career path would you have chosen if you hadn’t pursued dentistry?
I would love to be a chef. I am a major foodie. I love exploring different flavors and I am very adventurous with food but this isn’t the only thing I love about it. Growing up in the Arab world, food has always been a major player in gatherings with friends and family. Food brings people together, it is social. Food brings people closer, we have all experienced different cuisines from around the world whether we have been to visit the country it is from or not. When we are upset or sick we have comfort food. When we want to get closer to people, we break bread. I feel that being a chef, you could reach out to people and connect with people even if you do not come from the same background or speak the same language. You can communicate through flavor and sensation. To me, that is a beautiful sentiment.
What inspired you start a dance studio?
When I moved back to Kuwait, I joined a gym and continued my normal routine of exercising at least 3 times a week. While this is something, I encourage everybody to do to stay physically healthy, I felt there was something lacking. I was getting a little bored with the same old routine and realized that what I was missing was an element of passion, femininity and fun!

MARCH 2021
When I was in the UK, I used to go out dancing at studios with my girlfriends a lot! I am a terrible dancer! But non the less it provided me with the feeling of empowerment and femininity that exercise alone would not provide me. So I decided to create Omni, a dance and movement studio where we provide dance, fitness and yoga classes. I wanted to give the women of Kuwait a place to feel empowered, a place to get their cardio in while feeling girly and having fun, to create a sense of inclusivity. I wanted the girls to feel comfortable no matter their weight, height, or background. I wanted to create a safe space that would be an outlet for women from their normal day to day dealings. I am incredibly happy to say we have a beautiful Omni Family who attend our studio for just that! Much love to the instructors at Omni for sharing their talent, energy, and beautiful souls with our clients. Without them, Omni would not exist.
What style of dances does the studio offer?
We offer so many different styles of dance including afrobeats, hip-hop, burlesque, salsa, Bollywood, heels and many more! We also provide fitness classes tailored specifically for women, with any fitness background, such as Zumba and STRONG. We also offer aerial and floor yoga classes to help you find your zen. The studio offers classes for children as well as adults. What made you start dancing? What is your favorite type of dance? It was a way to spend time and simply have fun with my girlfriends when I was in the UK. It very quickly became something we all looked forward to every weekend! We still travel together every year (pre covid times!) and most of our days and nights are spent dancing together! I am a terrible dancer but I enjoy it non the less and I love the feeling of letting go and just letting my hair down. 15. What is your most memorable moment? Probably when I got told I passed my Membership to Orthodontics exam! I was so happy all my hard work had paid off!
What have you accomplished?
I have managed accomplish everything I have put my mind to so far and I am so blessed to have been provided by the means to do so. Whether it was obtaining my degrees, buying my first property, becoming a partner at Smart Dental Center or setting up Omni Studio, I worked consistently to realize the vision of what I wanted to achieve and I made it happen. I have a few more things up my sleeve for the future, but for the time being I need to focus on what I have now to be able to create what I want for the future!
What gets you out of bed in the morning?
Every day is a blessing. Every day is a day to enjoy. I wake up everyday ready to experience what comes. I am curious. I guess my curiosity gets me out of bed.
And what keeps you awake at night?
I try my best not to worry about things I have no control over, however, I am human and sometimes you can’t help but get overwhelmed with certain situations. I find that as my parents get older, I worry more and more about their health.
Where is your favourite holiday destination and why?
Where do I start! There are so many places that I love! Its too hard to pick one! My favourite city destination would have to be London. I love that London is a melting pot for so many different backgrounds! The city has amazing restaurants and nightlife. On top of that the city is always changing and there is always some new place to try brunch or a new hotel with a bespoke lounge or a new shop with
eclectic items you couldn’t possibly find anywhere else. I love it mostly because I have beautiful memories down many roads and alleys of London and many of my favorite people still live there so its always a great time when I go to visit. However, saying this, I am a beach fiend! When I travel I mostly enjoy summer destinations. Top of the list for me right now would have to be Mykonos and Croatia! Mykonos has beautiful beaches; amazing restaurants and the night life scene is always fun! In the summer, no matter what time of day it is you will always find something to do! A beautiful sunset at a sun lounge, fresh seafood at a local restaurant in the old town or beautiful beaches to explore. I recently discovered Croatia and it has become a destination I will be going back to! It has only recently become a place where tourists have been exploring. The beaches are gorgeous, the food is like no other and their national parks are simply heaven on earth!
How do you unwind?
I love to read novels. It has always been a way for me to escape reality and engross myself in a different reality for a little while.
What’s your favourite film, TV programme and book? Favourite film: Scent of a Woman Favourite tv programme: Curb your enthusiasm Favourite book: Little Women
Do you play any sports?
I used to be on the basketball team when I was in high school! But I don’t play sports anymore, however, I do strength training at least 3 times a week to keep myself active.
What kind of music do you listen to?
I appreciate all kinds of music, I love the poetry in old Arabic music. I think I learned to appreciate this genre in particular from my mom. She used to play oldies while she painted or ran errands around the house. Every time I listen to certain songs it takes me back to my childhood and I love that. But, my favorite kind of music has to be deep house. I am always reminded of being by the beach at different destinations around the world when I listen to it.
Tell me something about yourself that others might not know?
I hope to live abroad one day, own a small local restaurant, and cook! I enjoy what I do now, but I feel I would love to explore alternatives.
Any future goals/plans?
I would love to expand on Smart Dental Center and Omni Studio locally and internationally! Plans to expand the dental center are already in motion!

Useful Delusions: The Power and Paradox of the Self-Deceiving Brain
by Shankar Vedantam, & Bill Mesler From the New York Times best-selling author and host of Hidden Brain comes a thought-provoking look at the role of self-deception in human flourishing. Self-deception does terrible harm to us, to our communities, and to the planet. But if it is so bad for us, why is it ubiquitous? In Useful Delusions, Shankar Vedantam and Bill Mesler argue that, paradoxically, self-deception can also play a vital role in our success and well-being. The lies we tell ourselves sustain our daily interactions with friends, lovers, and coworkers. They can explain why some people live longer than others, why some couples remain in love and others don’t, why some nations hold together while others splinter.
The Five Wounds by Kirstin Valdez Quade

How Beautiful We Were by Imbolo Mbue
Women in White Coats: How the First Women Doctors Changed the World of Medicine by Olivia Campbell
So begins Imbolo Mbue’s powerful second novel, How Beautiful We Were. Set in the fictional African village of Kosawa, it tells the story of a people living in fear amidst environmental degradation wrought by an American oil company. Pipeline spills have rendered farmlands infertile. Children are dying from drinking toxic water. Promises of clean-up and financial reparations to the villagers are made—and ignored. The country’s government, led by a brazen dictator, exists to serve its own interest. Left with few choices, the people of Kosawa decide to fight back. Their struggle would last for decades and come at a steep price.
The Committed
by Viet Thanh Nguyen
The long-awaited new novel from one of America’s most highly regarded contemporary writers, The Committed follows the Sympathizer as he arrives in Paris as a refugee. There he and his blood brother Bon try to escape their pasts and prepare for their futures by turning their hands to capitalism in one of its purest forms: drug dealing. No longer in physical danger, but still inwardly tortured by his reeducation at the hands of his former best friend, and struggling to assimilate into a dominant culture, the Sympathizer is both charmed and disturbed by Paris. As he falls in with a group of left-wing intellectuals and politicians who frequent dinner parties given by his French Vietnamese “aunt,” he finds not just stimulation for his mind but also customers for his merchandise―but the new life he is making has dangers he has not foreseen, from the oppression of the state, to the self-torture of addiction, to the seemingly unresolvable paradox of how he can reunite his two closest friends, men whose worldviews put them in absolute opposition.
In the early 1800s, women were dying in large numbers from treatable diseases because they avoided receiving medical care. Examinations performed by male doctors were often demeaning and even painful. In addition, women faced stigma from illness—a diagnosis could greatly limit their ability to find husbands, jobs or be received in polite society. Motivated by personal loss and frustration over inadequate medical care, Elizabeth Blackwell, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and Sophia Jex-Blake fought for a woman’s place in the maledominated medical field. For the first time ever, Women in White Coats tells the complete history of these three pioneering women who, despite countless obstacles, earned medical degrees and paved the way for other women to do the same. Though very different in personality and circumstance, together these women built women-run hospitals and teaching colleges— creating for the first time medical care for women by women.
Mango and Peppercorns: A Memoir of Food, an Unlikely Family, and the American Dream
by Tung Nguyen, Katherine Manning, Lyn Nguyen, Elisa Ung, Michelle Bernstein Through powerful narrative, archival imagery, and 20 Vietnamese recipes that mirror their story, Mango & Peppercorns is a unique contribution to culinary literature. In 1975, after narrowly escaping the fall of Saigon, pregnant refugee and gifted cook Tung Nguyen ended up in the Miami home of Kathy Manning, a graduate student and waitress who was taking in displaced Vietnamese refugees. This serendipitous meeting evolved into a decades-long partnership, one that eventually turned strangers into family and a tiny, no-frills eatery into one of the most lauded restaurants in the country. Tung's fierce practicality often clashed with Kathy's free-spirited nature, but over time, they found a harmony in their contrasts—a harmony embodied in the restaurant's signature mango and peppercorns sauce.

MARCH 2021
Tell us about your education.
I earned my undergrad medical degree (MBBS) in Mumbai. Then pursued my masters in Clinical dermatology at Cardiff university (UK) where I fell in love with the subject! Learned the art of aesthetic dermatology at London Aesthetic academy. Completed a fellowship in dermatolasersurgery from Mahidol university in Bangkok. Trained in performing hair transplant surgeries in Mumbai.
What or who inspired you to become a dermatologist?
Funny you ask cause dermatology was not always my first choice. I wanted to be a surgeon! But with a turn of events in my personal life I decided to pursue dermatology and I thank God everyday for that cause I’m so in love with my specialty. After brushing just the tip of the iceberg (when I first encountered the subject), dermatology itself inspired me to become a dermatologist! It was my true calling.
How and when did you land in Kuwait?
God’s plan! Again, Kuwait was never on the agenda. I only ever knew Kuwait to be a country with the most expensive currency in the world. Marriage brought me here. I remember vividly arriving at the peak of summer 2019. The automated airport doors opened to a gust of hot air on my face and my husband standing with a bouquet of roses saying “Welcome to Kuwait!”. Slowly, but surely I began to adapt to the culture and love the country with all it had to offer. What impressed me the most about Kuwait is its belief in women empowerment! Now I consider myself lucky to be working as a female dermatologist in a place that is considered the cosmetic capitol of the world.
What excites you about your career?
Learning! Dermatology is a swiftly evolving branch and along with aesthetics it has brought to light a whole new genre to explore. In the last few decades there has been a massive positive leap in the treatment modalities available for dermatologists. Understanding of skin conditions and evolution of pharmaceutical drugs has come a long way. Major advances in laser technology and refinement of injectable products has got everyone excited. There is a lot of literature and data available for us to further our practice now. There is something new to learn everyday.
What is your favorite part about being a dermatologist?
Restoring the confidence and self esteem issues that a lot of patients go through with their skin conditions. A smile and a bond of trust with my patients gives me the fuzzy feels.
What are the current trends in beauty procedures and skincare?
The pandemic world has seen a significant shift in beauty trends. With social distancing still in play, the need to wear makeup has declined and people are moving more towards the ‘skinimilistic’ approach. This in turn has given rise to consumer awareness especially with the knowledge thirsty Gen Z which has pushed the beauty industry to have a more transparent relationship with the buyers. People want to know what ingredients are in their skincare products and how exactly do they work! A lot of them are now looking at products with clean or organic ingredients. CBD- infused skincare is creating a buzz. Maskne is another reason why people will be opting for less make up. The Covid era has also seen a high
rise in the number of hair thinning cases(mainly due to stress). PRP, hair care products & ampoules, hair strengthening supplements are now need of the hour !
What are some of the most common beauty procedures you perform on a regular basis?
Profound is one of my favorite procedures to perform. Also known as ‘Skin Botox’ the procedure has a high patient satisfaction rate. It results in brightening, pore reduction, tightening and rejuvenation of the skin. Overall a filter like effect in real life ! Other than that I’m a big fan of laser rejuvenation and pigment removing procedures.
In your opinion, what is the biggest challenge facing the beauty industry?
The current definition of ‘Beauty’ itself ! I blame Instagram for that. It pains me to see that a lot of women look like clones of each other now. We desperately need to break out of this photoshopped flawless world and keep it real. It is crucial for doctors to counsel patients and push them in the right direction. I always try to work on my patient’s skin first- cleansing, resurfacing, rejuvenation and then anti-ageing procedures(Botox, fillers, threads etc). I strongly believe in the ‘less is more’ approach and I wish more doctors would practice it. Just having good skin can make a world of difference. Influencers play a significant part in the beauty industry. A host of them are now brazen enough to embrace their natural avatar and hopefully everyone will jump on this positive bandwagon.
Which words or phrases do you most overuse? Don’t forget your sunscreen!
What is your idea of perfect happiness? Babies and cats! Lots of them!
What do you feel is the key to your success?
I believe all success stories revolve around hard work and determination. It does takes time and patience. But truly the key factor in my life has been the constant support of my loved ones. My parents have been by my side every step of the way and without them my success would be incomplete! You always need to surround yourself with people who understand what your profession means to you and are willing to accept the pros and cons of that lifestyle. I feel blessed to have found a partner who cradles me in that respect.
What beauty and skin care products can’t you live without? I swear by niacinamide! It’s an all rounder. Protects the lipid barrier of the skin, de-stresses the skin of pollution and excessive free radicals, reduces pigmentation, helps with acne and wide pores, prevents signs of ageing and more. I follow a simple skincare routine- a hydrating cleanser with urea followed by a mild AHA toner or simply rose water. Next up is my niacinamide serum. Top it up with a moisturizer sans too many actives. Always finish with a sunscreen. I do alternate with anti-oxidant rich serums for a couple of weeks. This routine may not fit all skin types. All routines need to be tailored according to the patient’s skin type and needs. It’s worth mentioning retinols. Even though they aren’t part of my current routine, I do prescribe them a lot. They need to be used under the right guidance for best results.

With summer upon us, what is the best way to prevent sun damage while enjoying the great outdoors?
Well, we are wearing face masks most of the time now so that provides some protection from the sun. However, sunscreen is the most important skincare product that we must all own. Make sure you cover all parts exposed to the sun. Other than that, don’t forget you sunglasses. A wide rimmed sun hat could double up as sun protection and a style statement. Loose, light colored cotton clothes are best to beat the heat and reflect a lot of light. For those who are extra cautious, an umbrella would be a good weapon to prevent skin damage while outdoors.
What are your greatest beauty secrets?
Plenty of water, green tea, Vitamin C intake, diligent cleansing and skincare routine. I spend more on skincare products than make up! I seldom wear foundation so I’m always motivated to keep my skin on point.
What is your life motto?
To give back to society. Whether it’s a kind gesture, helping someone in need, financial support, passing on the knowledge that I have received or motivating people to bring out the best in them. I try to do whatever little is within my reach. I strongly believe anyone who is in a position of power must utilize it to benefit others.
Describe yourself in one word. Ambitious.
How do you relax after a stressful day? It’s very simple - Netflix & chill!

This latest Porsche x BOSS collaboration is directly inspired by the aesthetic and design language of the sportscar brand and its products. How Japan’s First Sports Car Became A Sean Connery Classic A rare and perfect reflection of postwar optimism, Toyota’s first attempt is one for the history books
Or is it simply how it looks? To that end, the 2000GT speaks volume. Perhaps, as a result, the rare, beautiful, and groundbreaking Toyota gained an enviable reputation for becoming the first Japanese car to sell at auction for over one million dollars. Finally, speculators mused, Japanese vehicles were worth collecting. But the 2000GT had always been more than the sound of a falling hammer. By 1963, in the first-ever running of the Japanese Grand Prix, the manufacturer had triumphantly swept every class it entered. But the next year, Toyota saw its racing victories toppled by rival carmaker Prince and its Skyline. Its factory racing manager Jiro Kawano vowed to bring the brand back to racing glory the only way he knew how: with a high-end sports car, operating at the highest echelons of motorsport.
W
hat makes a car valuable? Is it where its origin lies, reflected in the faces of those who built it? The Toyota 2000GT Coupe arose from a nation whose “Made in Japan” label was, at the time, the punch line of a joke. Is it in a car’s technical achievements? The 2000GT’s inline-six engine, as well as independent suspension, disc brakes, rack-and-pinion steering, were then-exotic features we take for granted today. Is it within the stories it accumulates along the way? The 2000GT starred alongside Sean Connery’s James Bond while being campaigned by racing legend Carroll Shelby in the United States. Or is it the impact it has upon its introduction— the first evidence of an entire nation’s industrial might? Twenty years out from the ravages of World War II, Japan had developed the highspeed Shinkansen train, hosted the Summer Olympics, and blossomed into the secondlargest economy in the world—by these lofty achievements, Japan’s first supercar was the icing on the cake.
68
MARCH 2021
The 2000GT was a shot in the dark, a triumph of optimism So, he assembled a secret team of engineers who joined him for what would be known as Project 280A. Industrial designer Satoru Nozaki reportedly sought a Japanese interpretation of the Jaguar E-Type. The team also studied the Lotus Elan and the new Porsche 911 while drawing from their own experiences building the Sports 800—a diminutive little thing that was Toyota’s first sports car in 1962. And then they found an ally in Yamaha, makers of musical instruments and motorcycles, which had been developing a sports car with Nissan for some time—but the deal fell through. Stuck with the remnants of a half-finished prototype, Yamaha was all too happy to partner. Yamaha further developed an engine, adding dual overhead cams to a 2.0-liter inline-six derived from their Crown model. The result was a 150 horsepower show stopper. The prototype took
just five months to assemble, a breakneck pace in the automotive industry. On October 29th, 1965, at Harumi Fairgrounds, the 2000GT was unveiled to an assembled international media. It also debuted alongside the 2000GT that day was the first-ever Corolla.
Shelby made a deal with Toyota to field the cars only a year after he had famously lead Ford to beat Ferrari at Le Mans. No wonder Toyota entrusted him—supplying three cars and a slew of factory engineers for the war effort. But against the 911s and Corvettes of the world, the 2000GT never made enough horsepower to topple the ruling factions, which ultimately paved the way for its withdrawal.
The 2000GT drove its way into pop-culture legend in the James Bond movie You Only Live Twice, first with Bond girl Akiko Wakabayashi, then with Sean Connery behind the wheel
Yamaha, which manufactures everything from motorcycles to musical instruments, gave the 2000GT’s sumptuous wood dashboard the full piano treatment. (Photo: Patrick Ernzen, Beautiful Machines)
The 2000GT Coupe took just eight months to bring from sketch to running prototype. Designed by Satoru Nozaki, the car was only in production between 1967-70. At a top speed of 135 mph and retail price of $6,800 (roughly $53,000 today), the model quickly became a collectors favorite. (Photo: Patrick Ernzen, Beautiful Machines)
The crowds were amazed. Here was a production Toyota that offered a limited-slip differential, disc brakes at all four corners, fully independent suspension, and a one-piece rosewood dashboard with the same finishing and woodwork as Yamaha's grand pianos. In attempting to emulate the E-Type, Nozaki had gone even further: he had imbued the car with compound curves across nearly every surface, extracting a lithe, stretched form that looked even more compact and dramatic than its British forebear. The body was hand-formed aluminum, beaten with hammers over wooden bucks at a brand-new factory that Yamaha had just opened. When it debuted, the 2000GT cost more than a Porsche 911 or an E-Type, and was six times as much as a Toyota Corolla. It also took longer to produce than all of them. The moment the 2000GT began production, the markers decided to enter it in the Sports Car Club of America’s championships, facing the very cars that inspired it from Porsche, Lotus, and even national rivals like Datsun. Carroll
Instead, the 2000GT drove its way into pop-culture legend in the James Bond movie You Only Live Twice, first with Bond girl Akiko Wakabayashi, then with Sean Connery behind the wheel, who at 6-foot-2 could barely fit in the cramped conditions. This paved the way for two convertibles in the near future. Next to the Shelby race cars, they are the rarest ones yet. Though that isn’t saying much. With grand ambitions and a hefty price, Toyota built just 351 examples of the 2000GT. Nowadays, the brand can go ahead and build any sports car it wants—but the 2000GT was a shot in the dark, a triumph of optimism, and so forward-thinking that Toyota still draws its spiritual successors—like the Lexus LFA—from the 2000GT’s delicate fenders. It deserves its million-dollar status.
