The Secret of Elephants

Vasundra Tailor

The Secret of Elephants is a family saga set in India and tells a story of betrayal that impacts three generations of the same family.

The author sets the scene well, with the city of Navsari playing a central role. You can almost smell the spices in the street food, hear the buzz of the rickshaws, see the scrawny cows as they wander aimlessly through the neighbourhood.

The story begins with Harilal, Kanta and their children and a tragedy from which they will never recover. Rather than comforting each other in their shared grief, they turn against each other in anger. Inexplicably, the eldest daughter, Jasumati, cannot bring herself to be kind to her younger brother, Suresh. As a result, the conflict and animosity continues into adulthood and through to the next generation.

Nirmala is Suresh’s daughter and has never understood why her aunt Jasumati is so cruel. As Nirmala and her family struggle in their impoverished home, Jasumati watches on from her luxury mansion, indifferent to her niece’s situation.

The author’s descriptions provide wonderful imagery: “Turning to the mirror on the wall, Nirmala studied her appearance. The chandlo on her forehead had moved from the centre position and a few strands of hair had escaped the knot at the back of her head. Big brown eyes stared back at her, looking wistful, as if she was longing for something she couldn’t have.”

To make matters worse, Nirmala is trapped in a loveless marriage. Her husband is cruel to both her and their son, a son who is sick and needs expensive medicine which the family cannot afford.

When a letter arrives from Zimbabwe, addressed to Nirmala’s long-dead father, she begins to believe she can unravel the mystery that surrounds their family and finally reveal the cause of the decades long rift.

Travelling to Africa, she meets family members of which she had no previous knowledge, relatives deliberately kept secret for reasons she couldn’t begin to understand. She enjoys getting to know her new, extended family and marvels at the culture and landscape of a country she never dreamt she would visit.

“Every so often, they went past small round mud huts with thatched roofs set a little distance away from the road. A few families sat outside the huts idly watching the cars go by. Some had tethered goats nearby and chickens roaming freely around them.”

During her stay in Zimbabwe, she uncovers documents that shed light on a devastating truth. It changes everything she thought she knew about her family and alters her own circumstances very much for the better.

As a protagonist, Nirmala gains the support of the reader from the very start. She is the innocent party who is bullied and controlled by her husband and neglected by her callous aunt. But suspense is maintained throughout the book as tales of adultery and deceit thread through the chapters creating a roller-coaster of emotions and a sense of intrigue.

The shocking secret that ties the story together is, indeed, just that. It provides an unexpected twist in the brilliantly told tale that results in revelations aplenty! In short, it’s an impressive debut novel that’s as authentic as it is entertaining.

With so many Indian names to remember, the family tree at the beginning of the book is a very welcome addition. The author also explains some of the honorific suffixes used in Indian culture such as Ba (mother), Jija (sister’s husband) and Masaji (mother’s sister’s husband); terms without which, the book would lose its authenticity.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that the book’s title is, perhaps, a little misleading. However, it is in fact an ornamental elephant that drives the plot of this excellent novel. Would you know the difference between an Indian and an African elephant...?

Please introduce yourself to our readers.

Hi there! It’s me again, Ivy. I’m happy and thankful to be featured in City Pages for the second time after seven years.

I’m here to share about some new things that I’ve been working on. Recently, I've started making art which honestly took everyone by surprise including myself because it’s so different from what I usually do. This was completely unexpected to say the least. But this is me. In a nutshell, I’m someone who gets excited experimenting and doing new projects.

Tell us about your education.

I'm a nurse by profession and I've worked in the hospital back in the Philippines. When I came to Kuwait, I was a dental nurse for two years and the last nursing job I did was at Kuwait English School as a school nurse.

For art, I'm self-taught. When people ask me, I tell them I went to YouTube University because that's literally where I learned everything. Jokes aside, I would love to have some formal training one day.

How and when did you discover your love for art?

I started at the age of about 11 or 12, like every other child, painting with watercolours. I only did it sporadically whenever the mood strikes. In 2004, I took it up again. I did a series of charcoal nudes and chalk on black paper. It was mainly for relaxation, something I did after work or on weekends. Life got in the way and I eventually stopped. Never in a million years would I have imagined doing it again as my full time work, for now anyway.

You came back to painting after a long time. What incident or what made you come back to painting?

After I left nursing. I was into photography taking family portraits for a few years. Whilst I still love the camera, my interest has changed in terms of the subject I want to photograph. Since I'm still trying to figure out which direction I want to go, it has left a void career-wise. To fill my time, I started painting watercolours on a whim then one thing led to another.

How would you best describe your style of art? My art is influenced by the representation of the female form. I want to capture its beauty and sensuality. I love the sublime feminine because it is both powerful and delicate at the same time.

Where do you take inspiration for your work?

I get inspiration from everywhere. From films I've watched, from other artists, from photos that catch my attention.

What is your favorite medium for producing your art? I’ve tried different mediums such as watercolours and acrylic. At the moment, my favourites are oil and charcoal.

Can you describe your studio?

My studio is fairly small. I've pretty much just converted my office where I used to edit photos to where I do my art now. Another section of the room is a sound proof booth where I record my music covers.

What artistic process goes into creating your work? Can you take us through your process from concept to final work?

I don't have a fixed process yet because my style is still evolving. That said, I find myself moving towards abstract combined with

12 NOVEMBER 2022

realism. Currently, I'm also having fun doing charcoal, which happens to be my first love.

What are some of your biggest achievements so far?

I once modeled for a jewelry collection and my photos were on a massive billboard at the Avenues Mall for a month. I was also on another billboard at the fifth ring road and at the airport wearing watches. It was such a surreal experience.

How do you overcome creative blocks?

I take a break if I have to. I have other hobbies so I guess that helps. When I'm relaxed, I suddenly find myself thinking of new ideas and I regain my inspiration and motivation.

What message do you like to convey through your work?

Art can be used to convey all kinds of messages whether it's political, religious, social or personal issues but I'd like to focus on the bright side of things. I don't like anything that feels and looks depressing, I really try to stay away from them as much as I can. There's so much beauty around us and I'm hoping I can bring a little bit of sunshine to somebody through my art.

What are you currently working on?

I'm doing figurative charcoal drawings for international customers and I alternate painting with oil.

What is the biggest challenge of being an artist?

To keep going in the face of rejection. I'm emotionally attached to my art but I've learned not to take things personally. To be able to separate the two I think is half the battle won. Even though I'm relentless in the pursuit of my dreams, at the same time I'm quite chill in the way I approach it as a business. It may

13 www.cpmagazine.net
14 NOVEMBER 2022

sound too idealistic but I'm genuinely very trusting that everything will work out fine.

How and where do you sell your work? Do you also take commissioned work?

For now, through my personal social media accounts. I will be uploading them to a separate account soon. I've also submitted my work to online galleries abroad. Later on, I'm planning to display my work in art exhibitions and cafes.

As soon as I have enough body of work, I might consider accepting commissioned work in the future.

What are some of your other hobbies?

I absolutely love singing. To keep my sanity during the pandemic, I recorded and uploaded music covers on Youtube. My channel is Ivy Laughton, go ahead and check it out. Let me know which songs you like. Lastly, I've taken up Shidokan Karate and Filipino Martial Arts for my fitness exercise.

Your favorite quote? March to the beat of your own drum.

Your message for our readers. Keep your curiosity alive. It leads to discovering your dreams you never knew existed.

Your message for us at CP magazine.

Thank you for having me again. What you're doing for the community is very much appreciated. Know that you're making a difference.

TIME FOR NOSTALGIA: How the West is Winning.

In the heyday of the Western movie industry, the El Rancho Hotel in Gallup, New Mexico was considered the central operations hub. The decline of the genre of movies altered the clientele of the hotel and subsequently changed the entire business. Saved from the wrecking ball in the 80’s, the on-going improvements in the hotel are keeping the hotel modern. With all the change, has the El Rancho lost its charm and is the historic hotel making its guests comfortable?

The drive West to the hotel from Albuquerque to Gallup, New Mexico is approximately 2 hours. When the hotel was constructed in 1936, it needed to be in close proximity to the many variations of western landscape. With such rugged, diverse and majestic terrain at its doorstep, the backdrop for Westerns throughout the 30’s into the 1950’s made the El Rancho a production hub for Western movie making.

The production of movies was so prolific that R. Griffith, the brother of movie mogul D.W. Griffith, built the El Rancho Hotel to provide lodging for film crews and celebrities. Adorning the hotel lobby, lounge and balcony are the signed photographs, souvenirs and memorabilia of the celebrity guests of a bygone age. A miniature museum or perhaps to some a shrine to the industry. Names include; Ronald Reagan, Spencer Tracy, John Wayne, Katherine Hepburn, Marx Brothers, Humphrey Bogart, Doris Day, Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster, and Lucille Ball. Certainly the ‘A’ list of Hollywood star guests is impressive. The hotel boasts some 158 movie star guests that worked on 116 films that were shot in the area.

17 www.cpmagazine.net
Roy Boyce

The decline of the Western movie genre altered the guest population from movie stars and production crews, welcoming the American road traveller. The curious travellers arrived by retracing history on route 66 throughout the 60’s and 70’s travelling America by road. I am sure that the Santa Fe railway also had influence as well as the significant trade for the area in native goods and art that has been so influential. It is not inconceivable that a considerable portion of merchandise that adorns the boutiques of Santa Fe has journeyed from Gallup. With significant property maintenance issues and perhaps too many guest rooms empty, bankruptcy and demolition were once on the cards. Having always dreamed of owning the property, Armand Ortega purchased the property in 1986. Armand Ortega, a well-known Indian trader, bought the hotel and restored it to its original luster. Armand Ortega died in 2014 and currently Shane Ortega, Armand’s grandson, bought out his aunts’ and uncles’ share of the property in 2018.

Shane continues to improve, restore and renovate throughout the property. Keeping to the spirit and vibe of the original hotel. It is reported that the current renovations and restorations plan is a $6M investment in the property. Today, there has been a resurgence in travelling Route 66 before much more of it disappears. The hotel is a popular stop for nostalgic Route 66 travelers as well as the participants and visitors to the local events. The events include balloonists for the Red Rock Ballon Rally to the Arts and Crafts Fair who can stay in rooms named for movie stars who were guests before them. The El Rancho was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. So, what’s it like?

So having postulated over driving Route 66 for so many years. Staying at the El Rancho was a must. The neon, the history, the kitch were all part of the romance of the place for me. There is a balance between the old history, the connection with Route 66 and the now modernized hotel. Just enough Hollywood, desert, rock, neon and cars that just make it a package. It did not disappoint. Whether your interests are in the art and jewelry or perhaps curious about the Zuni Pueblo life, horseback riding like John Wayne or hiking in the Petrified Forest National Park in

neighbouring Arizona. There is plenty to do.

At the hotel, as you step through the door you are into another world. The mix of stone and large lumber beams and aged wood flooring. The large fireplace lounge, chandeliers, the woodwork and couches are all very inviting. The reception staff were very welcoming and the process of getting a key short and simple. I really like having a key. Call it an age thing if you must but I think that a key is both fitting a historic property and also more access limited. There are probably a couple of guest keys for the room and then there is a limited set of master keys for housekeeping and front of house staff. Those plastic cards can be reproduced instantly for as many of those cards the hotels have. What data can a proper key keep about your movements, nothing. I digress. I had a second-floor room looking out to the front of the hotel. It was hot outside and the room temperature was great. The aircon was not loud or obtrusive in the room which is really important for me. I certainly have no preference for those under-the-window aircon units that just grind it out all night that you find in many hotels. The bathroom was compact for sure however, for me it had everything that I needed and it all worked great. I had reserved a small room as I am just one person. Larger rooms are available and I believe that the hotels top suites are being renovated. No bathtub (I never take a bath anyway), just a good size shower with good water pressure and temperature. Very nice after a day playing in the rocks and desert. Bedroom size was great. Enough room for me and my luggage and not tripping over anything. Bed was fantastic. Really great mattress and linens. I had an amazing sleep and was not woken by hotel or road noise. There is a great deal to look at in the hotel. The pictures, posters etc. are all very cool. It was great to explore both inside and outside the hotel. The shop has a lot of merchandise including native art and jewelry. I have one comment or complaint if you like. I did stroll into the 49er Lounge for a beverage. The bartender was very busy clearing and putting away. When ready, her head popped up and glanced at me she said “last call”. I looked at my watch and it was 9:40pm. I guess that my expectations were a little off. I do think that this is a very early closing time. The couple that was seated at the bar looked disappointed but the couple that came in after me were really bummed out as they left unsatisfied.

18 NOVEMBER 2022

With all that said, the El Rancho was an experience that I looked forward to for years and did enjoy. My sleep was fantastic and I can clearly see that the restoration and renovations are improving the experience and keeping the property up-to-date. The improvements are all going in the right direction. As with any renovation restoration project that has a historic facet, a portion of the project can be financial punishing because of the historic aspect. It takes drive and love to see past the shortterm returns in favour of keeping the charm alive. Glad to see that Shane Ortega has the love and courage to continue what his grandfather started. I would recommend my friends and family to stay. Hopefully I will get an opportunity to revisit the El Rancho in the future.

The El Rancho Hotel is at 1000 E Hwy 66, Gallup, NM 87301, United States

The opinions shared are based on my own experience. Your experience could be the same or different. Take time to do your own research to see if this is right for you. I was not paid or sponsored by anyone, including the El Rancho hotel to stay at this location. It was an independent choice and my stay was funded from my personal account.

WHAT IS FORMERLYME?

FormerlyMe is an online movement to motivate and inspire people to become the best version of themselves by showing them my journey and experience in trying a new workout and lifestyle regime every 30 days. Every post, update, and video is ‘formerly me’ as I endeavor to become the best version of myself and become FormerlyMe. Each month CP Magazine will showcase a part of my journey to becoming the best version of myself. I hope that in turn this inspires and motivates you to start your own journey as well. For this month’s story we will focus on the “On The Go: Pumpkin Festival” days of my journey.

20 NOVEMBER 2022
Jim West

Just outside Stuttgart on the edges of the Black Forest is a Baroque town of Ludwigsburg. Every year between August and December, the palace grounds host the world’s largest pumpkin exhibition with over 450,000 thousand pumpkins and 600 varieties on display. People from all across Europe come to see the weighins for the largest and heaviest pumpkin, check out the awesome pumpkin displays, and feast upon many pumpkin dishes such as pumpkin ravioli and pumpkin fries.

Seeing how big these pumpkins can get is a reminder that we have the same capacity to grow. Whether we grow heavy and fat or we grow strong and muscular, we can choose how we grow by what we eat and what we do health-wise with physical activity such as cardio, sports, strength training, etc. I looked up some tip son how to grow big pumpkins and it is somewhat interesting that you need lots of water and sunshine. Much how we as humans need lots of water and sunshine ourselves! So get outside, soak in some sun, and drink your water!

Every weekend they have mini events such as pumpkin boat contest, carving contests, and of course the big events of the Germany and European Championship Weigh-Ins. I attended the European weigh-ins and let me tell you that these are some humongous pumpkins! In recent years they have had some world record setting weigh-ins. The largest being 2702 pounds (1226 kg)! However this year the festival would not see many pumpkins over 800 pounds (362 kg).

Follow my journey online at FormerlyMe.com and on the YouTube channel. Next month I will cover my more unique experiences I had in 2021-2022. Until next time that has been FormerlyMe! facebook.com/FormerlyMe twitter.com/MeFormerly instagram.com/formerlymeofficial

Introducing Fabric of Society, a new Kuwait-based luxury style destination set to transform the Middle East. The fresh new brand brings to life a new digital home for nextgen and emerging talent with a carefully curated portfolio of niche international brands such as Last Frame, Coperni, Aries, Ahluwalia, Eéra, Ottolinger, Heliot Emil, MISBHV, Dentro and SRVC to name only a few.

“We are proud to have arrived at this moment and for the generosity and support the industry has shown towards our vision. Over this period, we’ve had the distinct opportunity to work with so many extraordinary and talented individuals, all of whom have helped us shape a company that we believe transcends the economics and raises a community. We’re truly excited to launch this new home for our region’s fashion forward Gen Z and Millennials, though I’d rather see it as we’re now freeing ‘Fabric of Society’ into the world it was born to thrive in” says Raheel Al Roudhan – CEO of Fabric of Society, a new Kuwait-based luxury style destination.

Raheel Al Roudhan studied Visual Communications at Gulf University, Kuwait, and was deeply inspired by her father’s successful businesses and work ethic, as well as the many Kuwaiti women who run their own companies. She knew however, that it would be her love of fashion and drive for creativity that would inspire where she focused her deep-rooted business ambitions.

Influenced by the shift she witnessed in how people dressed in a post-pandemic world – where more relaxed, less-formal dressing and street style culture

were becoming popular, Raheel set her sights on creating a retail destination that focused on this new look. A completely fresh and new brand within the Middle East which shared her own modern, global outlook and brought to light new and exciting streetwear, next-gen and niche labels that set trends, rather than follow them.

Raheel’s plan is to champion these labels as much as possible – not only because of their incredible designs but their philosophy too, focusing on brand’s who use deadstock material, vegan alternatives and more environmentally responsible processes within their organisations.

The ambition of Fabric of Society is for it to grow whilst remaining true to its fashion roots, focusing on more brands, breadth of product and expansion into regions beyond the Middle East. With a rapidly expanding team and customer base, Raheel and Fabric of Society are keen to cement their position within the fashion world as a go-to for street-wear, next gen and niche international brands.

José Berrocoso, our lifestyle editor, sit down with Raheel Al Roudhan, to pick her brains on how to keep one’s sights set firmly on success.

Talent Radar

25 www.cpmagazine.net

CityPages Magazine: What is the story behind the inception of the Fabric of Society platform?

Raheel Al Roudhan: I felt for some time that there was something super exciting happening in the Kuwaiti style scene but that there was no one destination that captured all of this and served this woman I was seeing more and more. So I set about creating that destination and my hope is that it transforms beyond ecomm into a destination that captures the essence of its name, a society that fosters creativity, a community of like-minded individuals.

CPM: How would you describe the fashion scene in Kuwait?

RAR: I feel women here are really receptive to new and smaller brands, as well as the more established labels. Their brand story is part of what attracts us I think, as we look to modern brands to reflect a more youthful and modern Kuwaiti woman. Styling wise it feels confident and very cool – the next-gen and streetwear-influenced brands we have on FoS sell through really well.

CPM: What would you say the secret sauce to building an online platform?

RAR: I wouldn’t say just one thing. There are so many elements! However, first and foremost for me it was that I knew there was a customer calling out for these brands and curation. Then it’s about finding a team that is able to translate your vision.

CPM: How do you choose the designers and brands you work with?

RAR: We have great relationships with a lot of these brands, they are genuinely excited by the style movement in Kuwait and how their brands are understood and appreciated here. We choose brands we know our customer will love, those who have unique brand stories and brand values.

CPM: Many of your brands are exclusively partners to Fabric of Society. How do you convince them to partner with you exclusively?

RAR: I hope it’s because they believed in our vision too. We are a young business, like many of the brands we stock. We believe in what they are creating – and love how their creativity shines through their designs. It’s an honour to stock the brands that we do and give them a platform to reach more.

CPM: How is Fabric of Society beneficial to small, independent brands and retailers?

RAR: We try to champion them as much as possible. We showcase a different brand every fortnight within our editorial offering, delving into the designers’ methods or collections to unpack their story and share it with the FoS customer.

CPM: If you could describe the Fabric of Society experience in three words what would it be?

RAR: Youthful, seamless, luxury.

CPM: What do you see as the most important ingredient of success?

RAR: A lot of hard work and perhaps a little bit of luck. I think it is the right time to really boost the fashion scene in Kuwait and to give women here more of what they already love and want, but housed within a platform for them that sources the product, curated it to instantly inspire them and delivers it almost immediately.

CPM: What would you say customers want from a shopping experience now?

RAR: Our customers love that the product offering is tightly curated, we really think about whether our customer will want

26 NOVEMBER 2022

a product rather than buying into everyone and everything. But one thing that is key is service. From live chat to seamless speedy delivery, customers have the same expectations I have and I want them to be met and for us to go beyond.

CPM: What role does social media play in your business?

RAR: Social media is hugely important to us, and something we will grow even more. Our name reflects our brand ethos and this notion of a society is something we wanted to really bring to life. We want to showcase the brands, the designers behind them and a wealth of creatives – such as artist collaborations. We also like to chat with our customers – our DM’s are so busy! This builds a connection and was key to FOS world I wanted to build.

CPM: Which are your favourite brands on Fabric of Society?

RAR: It’s hard to choose!! We had our launch event recently and I wore these incredible cargo pants from a London streetwear label called Aries – I am obsessed with them. But I also love brands such as Ugo Paulon, Aleksandre Akhalkatsishvili –who do the most game-changing tailoring that I recommend to absolutely everyone and MISBHV too. But genuinely I love them all because we have gotten to know the designers and teams behind the brand’s and I know how passionate they are too about their creations. It’s that which I really hope to bring to the FoS customer too.

What’s up next for Fabric of Society?

RAR: It’s about growing properly and at the right time. Even though I like to do everything at once I want to ensure that our service is always perfect, so I’ve learnt to be patient! We want to continue our expansion through the Middle East and our unrivalled super-fast delivery. I also want to continue working closely with brands on exclusive collaborations, so we are bringing our customers truly unique pieces that feel even more special and limited edition.

MAKING HEALTHIER FOOD CHOICES THE NORM:

FAST FOOD VS. FROZEN, HOME-COOKED MEALS

Over the last few decades, there’s been a rapid decline in home cooking across the globe and a concurrent increase in dependence on convenience foods. The rise of dual income families is one major reason for this.

More women now work within the labour force compared with 19801 and there has been a 40% reduction2 in home cooking hours during the same time. (World bank database, The Guardian). This demographic shift has catalyzed the growing dependence on readyto-eat (fast food) and pre-cooked meals (frozen products).

Just like fast food, most pre-cooked frozen food products available in the market are heavily processed and lack nutritious value. Companies producing these meals are focused on commercialized options such as junk food, their offerings use preservatives, and offer sub-par flavour at best. Most fast food and pre-cooked frozen food products essentially do nothing more for a consumer besides fill them up with calories.

Over the years, these food choices have given rise to a plethora of lifestyle-related health issues such as obesity, depression, digestive problems, heart disease, stroke, and many others. Because of this, it’s been observed that an increasing number of people are actively looking for better alternatives to home cooking - options that are fast but do not compromise on their health and well-being.

Frozen home-authentic cooked meals are the answer to this problem. And as consumers broaden their awareness regarding health and wellness, there is a concurrent increase in demand this specific category of frozen food. Due to this growing demand, people’s freezers are getting larger.

Within this segment, there are companies that are laser-focused on creating homeauthentic frozen ready-to-heat-and-eat options that combine speed and wellness and offer the best of both worlds to their customers. So, let's compare the nutritional value and effects of convenience food with frozen home-cooked meals to see how they stack up.

Fast food & pre-cooked frozen foods vs. frozen home-cooked meals: A comparison

1. Frozen home-cooked meals contain fewer calories

New research from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health shows that eating home-cooked meals decreases calorie intake compared to eating fast food. People who prepare their own meals or consume frozen home-cooked meals eat fewer carbohydrates, lipids, and sugars than those who cook less frequently.

The survey also found that persons who typically eat six to seven home-cooked meals per week consume less food when dining out. Additionally, they choose fresh food with a good nutritional value over oily fast foods when they eat out.

Fast food and most pre-cooked frozen products have almost no nutritional value when compared to frozen home-cooked meals since they contain more salt, artificial flavours, and almost zero fiber. What’s more, people easily consume thousands of calories per meal when they indulge in fast food or frozen products such as pastas and pizzas. But while most of these foods are unhealthy, with the advent of the latest technology such as blast and isochoric freezing, it doesn’t have to be that way. Food can easily be preserved without chemicals (such as preservatives) and kept as fresh as new.

2. Frozen home-cooked food is more affordable and wholesome

Compared to the cost of eating out, consuming frozen, homecooked meals prepared at home is less expensive. We spend significantly more when we eat out (especially if done frequently). Additionally, frozen home-cooked meals show their nutritious value on the packet (including calories per meal) and are healthier than takeout or meals from a restaurant that generally do not disclose the quality of the ingredients, or their quantities used per meal.

One fast food meal for a family of four can cost around KWD 6.75 to KWD 8.5. On the other hand, a frozen home-cooked meal of meatball tomato stew for a family of four costs less. Frozen homemade meals of lobieh vegan (long green beans with fresh tomatoes, onions, and garlic) and other vegetarian dishes such as Musakaa Vegan (eggplant, zucchini, and chickpeas) will cost even less.

Moreover, these frozen home-cooked options offer homeauthentic meals that are nutritious, free of preservatives, and have superior flavour and texture. The use of blast freezing technology helps preserve the goodness (vitamins and nutrients) of these freshly cooked wholesome meals.

3. Cooked-at-home meals reduce childhood obesity

Eating meals prepared at home with the family fosters closer relationships and improves interpersonal communication. It also maintains the physical and emotional well-being of kids. Eating meals together as a family reduces childhood obesity, according to a study that was published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

For families that lack the time to cook at home, frozen homecooked meals offer a healthier and smarter alternative. These frozen meals also show calories on each pack of meal for those who want to lose weight and make their portion sizes smaller.

Each pack of frozen home-cooked meal will have anywhere from 107 to 317 calories per serving. Now compare this with the 800 or 1200 calories consumers eat when consuming a deep fried or heavily processed meal and its shocking to see the sheer number of additional calories a person is consuming per day when relying entirely on takeaways.

Additionally, consuming food made with fresh produce can aid in healing, prevent inflammation, and keep lifestyle diseases at bay. Frozen home cooked meals also allow customers to stock up on healthier, home-authentic meals for up to one year without a loss of nutritive value.

Another benefit of eating “home authentic frozen food” is that it reduces overall food wastage which happens at various points between grocery shopping, throwing away of unused grocery (such as fresh produce that is still fit for consumption), or uneaten cooked food. On average, about 4 people waste approximately half a ton of food every year.

The world food wastage is almost 1 billion Tons compared to 5.3 billions Tons of food available for consumption. This makes food wastage almost 20% of total food available per year. Additionally, 10% of CO2 emissions globally come from food wastage, which is a serious global challenge. (National Centre for Biotechnology Information)

Parting thoughts

Frozen home-cooked meals are both more affordable and healthier when compared with fast food and pre-cooked frozen meals. They don't overdo it on the calories, fats, flavorings, and salts that are bad for health. And they can significantly enhance users’ health and well-being.

According to Statista, Kuwait’s online food delivery segment will reach US$748.70m in 2022 with an expected annual growth rate of 3.88% (CAGR 2022-2027). By 2027, there will be 1.7 million people using online meal delivery services. This indicates a continuously growing reliance on pre-cooked meals and highlights great opportunities for brands with heart to make way into the healthy, home-cooked category.

The lush surrounds of the Garden Route are the ideal backdrop for water sports and wildlife adventures alike. What better way to see these beautiful sea creatures than by boat, with a knowledgeable guide who will share interesting information about why they are so important to the balance of nature.

Dolphin Season - In summer you have a very good chance of spotting the rare, gregarious Humpback Dolphins found in only certain areas of the South African coastline. You can also likely to see Bottlenose Dolphins and Common Dolphin. We will take you to the Robberg Seal Colony, the natural habitat of about 5,000 noisy, fun-loving seals.

Whale Season - In winter there is a very high likelihood that you will see the Southern Right and Humpback whales. Tours include the Robberg Seal Colony (home to +/- 5000 seals) and other marine life of the day.

Birds of Eden is the Garden Route’s very own world class free flight bird sanctuary. The unique two-hectare dome (the World’s largest) spans over a gorge of indigenous forest and is sanctuary to a myriad of birds that can be viewed up close.

Birds of Eden was developed to create a safe environment in which to release a large collection of freeflight African birds and miniature monkeys.

At Monkeyland guests have the rare opportunity to walk amongst these fascinating creatures, that remind us so much of ourselves.

CityPages Magazine: You’re clearly a jewellery lover. Tell us a bit about your jewellery journey?

Basma Chaieri: I have always been a fashion and accessories lover, particularly a fan of jewellery; how one can play with it to upgrade any look with minimum effort. I have always loved having an extensive collection of jewellery so I can mix, layer, and match it with different styles and outfits. Yet, I wasn’t sure how I could financially afford both a large diamond jewellery collection and an ethical and eco-friendly approach. I could hardly find topquality, conscious, and budget-friendly pieces. So most of the time, I had no other option but to buy trendy fast fashion jewellery, low-quality items that looked good at first but tarnished after wearing them 3 or 4 times. So practically, they were not cost-efficient if you calculated the price per wear. Also not sustainable for the environment if they ended up in the trash fast.

When I first heard of lab-grown diamonds, diamonds that are real, ethical, sustainable, plus more accessible in terms of pricing, I thought these were no-brainers. That’s how I decided to create a brand that will bring an alternative to women that will elevate any look, make them look fabulous, protect the environment, and offer value for money.

CPM: What sets Etika Jewels’s high jewelry apart other than the extraordinary balance of tradition, versatility and timeless design?

BC: Tradition, versatility, and timeless design best describe our collection and designs. On top of that, what sets us apart

are our company values and commitments. They come down to being kind and responsible in two main ways: Our offerings hold a feel-good factor. We guarantee our clients that the diamonds they get are ethically sourced and free from any conflict and child labor. We also extend this engagement to our packaging consisting only of ecofriendly and cruelty-free options, like our vegan leather boxes.

Our customer service focuses on being responsive and staying close to our clients. Although we don’t have a physical boutique yet, we are always available for them, taking time to listen to their requests, giving them options, and educating them about lab-grown diamonds. Clients come to us for styling recommendations when choosing a gift, and they also come with questions about lab-grown diamonds, to which we love responding!

CPM: What is the process to produce Etika Jewels’s lab-grown diamonds?

BC: Lab-grown diamonds are made in laboratories using either one of these two methods: the High-Temperature and High-Pressure (HTHP) method: A tiny seed of a diamond is placed into a chamber of heat and pressure, just like earthgrown diamonds. The combination forces the diamond crystal to grow. And the Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) method: A diamond seed is placed into a vacuum chamber filled with methane gases. Then, microwaves of heat and pressure are used to break down the gas molecules. The carbon atoms from the gas remain and fall onto the diamond

44 NOVEMBER 2022

seed crystal, turning it into a growing diamond. Both methods can produce high-quality lab-grown diamonds with excellent colour and clarity. Our job is to carefully pick the diamonds of the highest quality and brilliance for our pieces.

CPM: Where do you produce them? What are the benefits of lab-grown diamonds?

BC: As it’s a relatively new and fast-evolving industry, new production units are regularly opening in the four corners of the world. As far as our production is concerned, our diamonds come mainly from the US, but also from India and Singapore.

The benefits of lab-grown diamonds are multiple: they are in every aspect identical to mined ones, sharing their quality, brilliance, and hardness. And they are even better in one little crucial part: being produced in a controlled environment, lab-grown diamonds are born to be free from Nitrogen, the chemical element that gives mined diamonds a yellowish tint. Another benefit is sustainability, which is guaranteed with man-created diamonds. People dig miles and miles down, removing, on average, 250 tons of soil and spending more than 100 gallons of water per carat of earth-mined diamonds to be extracted. The results of these practices are, most of the time, deforestation, soil degeneration, and large quantities of polluted wastewater. It’s challenging for the environment and the natural balance.

Contrary to a diamond mined with heavy-duty equipment and explosives, the lab-grown diamond is one with a smaller

impact on the earth’s resources. Its carbon emissions come down to only 4.8% of its mined counterpart, and overall emissions are a billion-and-a-half times lower. Water and energy consumption are also 85% and 50% lower for those gems “born” in the laboratory. Per carat, they disrupt just 0.07 square feet of land, so the numbers speak for themselves, showing how eco-friendly a lab-grown diamond is.

CPM: What trends are you noticing within labgrown diamonds/ What does the future look like for lab-grown diamonds?

BC: Nowadays, millennial and Generation Z are shaping the diamond and jewellery industry. With a high awareness of eco-friendly practices and ethical sourcing, New generation buyers look for eco-friendly products. Hence they are becoming fans of lab-grown diamonds, which have a low environmental impact. Whether you are an industry professional or a consumer, you are already aware of the new trend in the diamond industry. The era of lab-grown diamonds has started and is here to stay. If you just look at the investments and moves of the prominent jewellery groups in the last years, you’ll get a glimpse of shifting attitudes:

De Beers, for example, has started its own lab-grown diamond jewellery brand, Lightbox, and have invested $94 million in a lab-grown diamond manufacturing facility. LVMH Luxury Ventures recently invested $90 million in Israeli lab-grown diamond jeweller Pandora, which

45 www.cpmagazine.net

has announced it will use only lab-made diamonds in its collections. All these strategic moves clearly indicate the future of the diamond jewellery industry.

CPM: How is the creative process in Etika Jewels?

BC: We look at the timeless pieces of yesterday and today and reinvent them in designs that will last a lifetime rather than seasonal trends. We know every jewellery piece is a significant investment, and we want our clients to enjoy it for many, many years. We love sleek, minimalist designs featuring relatively big-size diamonds in elegant shapes, becoming that wow factor we all need in our day-to-day looks. Our creative process also revolves around practicality and wearability. Women love our 24/7 earrings and necklaces, easy-to-wear bangles, and everyday stackable rings because they are too busy to wear complicated highmaintenance accessories. In that spirit, we use only pure gold in our items, so our clients won’t bother taking them off when swimming or taking a shower.

CPM: What would you advice retailers and brands say to consumers who are concerned lab-grown diamonds are ‘not as real’ as diamonds because they haven’t been naturally cultivated?

BC: Lab-grown or lab-created diamonds are diamonds that are grown in laboratories. Lab-grown diamonds are physically, chemically, and visually identical to their mined equivalents; they are both crystallized carbon atoms. The only difference is their place of origin. Think of it this way: laboratory-grown diamonds are like ice from your refrigerator, while natural diamonds are like ice from a glacier. They are both ice, although their formation stories are very different, They are both H2O. Natural diamonds are forged by heat and pressure deep in the earth’s mantle, while lab-grown ones are ‘engineered’ in similar conditions inside a latest-technology machine. Even the

most proficient gemmologists cannot distinguish them. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, just more ethical.

CPM: How is the Etika Jewels customer?

BC: Our customers are definitely sophisticated, discerning, and highly aware of what’s next in fashion. More specifically, at Etika Jewels, we meet 3 types of customers. First, we have the proponents of sustainability, innovation, and responsible luxury who are explicitly interested in the ethical side of lab-grown diamonds. They love glamour and fashion but do not want to be stylish at the expense of our natural resources and livelihoods. Secondly, we encounter those who know the market trends or are doing their deep research before buying anything. They are really looking to get a good value for their money, so they are drawn to investment pieces, as we define them in our modern world. Our pieces are value-for-money in the sense that with the same budget, you get a bigger, similarly high-quality diamond. Lastly, we are pleased to see in our regular clientele people attracted by our elegant and timeless designs.

CPM: Which stones and materials do you prefer working with?

BC: We are originally a fine diamond jewellery brand, so diamonds of all sizes and shapes are naturally the core of our collections. Having said that, we are gradually introducing more and more coloured gemstones, also man-made and ethically produced. We love to mix different colours of stones and gold. We recently created some beautiful rings that combine various shades of gold: The Ameera Ring, for example, features a rose gold band and white gold prongs adorned with a hidden halo giving an unexpected twist when looked at from its profile side. It’s a visual surprise that shows our discreetly playful aspect as a brand.

46 NOVEMBER 2022

CPM: Each stone has its meaning. Each combination tells the story. What would be the most poetic combination in your opinion?

BC: One of our bestsellers is our own interpretation of the Toi & Moi ring, which translates as “you and me” in French. Made exclusively of gemstones, this ring is a symbol of union, friendship, and commitment. Our customers love it, and each one writes a unique and personal story behind it. They choose their favourite gemstones for it on various grounds. A customer might pick certain gems for the energy they are known to carry or for the special meaning they have for them. There are certain symbolisms behind each stone, and people love to include them in their customized pieces. Alternatively or additionally, there are clients drawn by the beauty of specific gems. They find them more visually attractive than others, or they pick them because they match their personal style. They consider how these stones mix well with their everyday outfits and how flattering they are to their natural characteristics and facial features. After all, these are pieces meant to be worn frequently and styled in many ways, and become very intimate and personal.

CPM: What does luxury mean for the brand today? What is the next generation of luxury shoppers looking for?

BC: Luxury for us means looking effortlessly fabulous, wearing something that looks exquisite without trying too much. It’s the glamour that comes as a natural extension of your personality. We create diamond jewelry that instantly elevates your everyday looks. Luxury is the confidence you get from wearing such pieces. You feel elegant because we make sure your jewelry represents timeless aesthetics. Plus, you feel good in our Etika Jewels because you know they are ethical and conflict-free, in other words, with clean origins. The next generation of luxury shoppers is more educated, sophisticated, and eclectic than ever before. They are fashionable, but they are also practical minds and responsible consumers. Their definition of luxury comes as a magical blend of sustainability, practicality, and perfect style, and we are happy to fulfil this equation for them.

CPM: What’s next for Etika Jewels?

BC: Our short-term plans are, of course, further consolidating our place in the local market, increasing our popularity, and spreading the word about the potential and benefits of lab-grown diamonds. We want to educate more and more people on the subject of sustainability and ethical fashion; the opportunities are endless in that realm. More specifically, we are already forging relationships within the industry, and we are working on some exciting collaborations. Teaming up with the right creative and business forces, we want to bring innovation closer to people’s everyday realities. Our journey continues with partnerships that will further confirm our commitment to the environment and our mission to create feel-good jewellery that meets each client's needs.

CPM: How important is the GCC market for Etika Jewels?

BC: GCC is our primary market and absolute priority. We are a home-grown brand, and all our efforts today revolve around getting closer to our customers, understanding them even more, and responding

to their needs and dreams. The Middle East is such an exciting market to grow a brand because it is cosmopolitan and diverse. Gold jewellery is deeply rooted in the traditions and culture of this place; hence there is a wide offering, a huge competition, and a client base that won’t accept anything less than the best. If a jeweller makes it in the GCC, they can make it anywhere!

WILD & CHIC AUSTRALIA

Situated adjacent to the World Heritage-listed Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, Longitude 131° offers superb contemporary accommodation in the style of a luxury desert camp, right at Australia’s spiritual heart. Each of its tents has been carefully designed to have minimal impact on the delicate natural environment, standing lightly upon red sand dunes to provide an intimate encounter with the vast and unspoilt outback landscape.

First opened in 2002, Longitude 131° was designed by respected Australian architect Philip Cox, who

created the outback retreat’s distinctive safari tent-style guest pavilions and central Dune House. Australian family business Baillie Lodges took over the reins at Longitude 131° in November 2013, in a lease agreement with the Indigenous Business Council of Australia, which owns the property. Since 2017, Silky Oaks Lodge in Queensland’s Daintree Rainforest and The Louise is South Australia’s Barossa Valley have been added to the family following significant refurbishments, bringing the total number of lodges in the Australian collection to five. Overseas, Clayoquot Wilderness

Longitude 131° is among Australia’s most acclaimed luxury wilderness retreats - an exclusive collection of 16 tented pavilions with unrivalled views of the country’s best-known natural wonder, Uluru, Ayers Rock.

Lodge on Vancouver Island and the iconic Huka Lodge in Taupo, New Zealand, as well as the three Tierra Hotels properties in South America have also joined the collection.

Baillie Lodges has led a series of three multimillion dollar transformations of Longitude 131, with architectural designs commissioned by Max Pritchard who created the award-winning Southern Ocean Lodge. Baillie Lodges founders James and Hayley Baillie have taken a very personal, hands-on approach to the lodge’s interior and exterior design and detail.

The most recent and significant refurbishment at Longitude 131° was completed in August 2017 with a spend of more than AU$8 million. The project’s aim was to take the property to the world-class standards of Southern Ocean Lodge; the result is considered a reinvention of an Australian icon. Included is a remodelled central Dune House to feature new lounge areas, a stylish new bar with some 500 individually hand-painted tiles from Indigenous Arts Community Ernabella along with vibrant Indigenous artworks from communities around the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands.

57 www.cpmagazine.net

Outside is an expanded outdoor terrace for open air dining, redesigned swimming pool and new Dune Top drinks and dining venue, while the property’s new premium suite, the Dune Pavilion, is set on a private desert dune separate to shared guest areas. Expansive and contemporary, the Dune Pavilion is Australia’s only accommodation offering views of both World Heritage-listed Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta (The Olgas). Architecturally designed as a modern interpretation of the Australian homestead, the Pavilion is considered the star of the luxury camp. Featuring two bedrooms, separate lounge areas, a bespoke bar and private decks with daybed, luxury swag for stargazing and a trough-style plunge pool, the Dune Pavilion is the ultimate in outback luxury. A suite of local designers has been commissioned to provide furniture and features for the reimagined property, many who have worked with Baillie Lodges for many years and whose work appears across the trio of properties. Highlights include furniture designed by West Australian Nathan Day, handcrafted furniture and feature lighting by Pierre and Charlotte Julian, and Robert Plumb outdoor furniture.

Also included in the refurbishment was the new Dune Top, offering views to Uluru and Kata Tjuta and featuring an open bar, plunge pool and intimate dining alcoves, perfect for sunset drinks or a more private ‘quiet night out’ under a multitude of stars. The Table 131 signature outdoor dining experience has been recreated to include a central decked area with EcoSmart campfire and flexible seating to accommodate couples and friends. The guest swimming pool has also seen a redesign, with contemporary decking and built-in day beds creating a sophisticated desert sanctuary.

Spa Kinara (‘kinara’ meaning ‘moon’ in Pitjantatjara) is the property’s first onsite spa and takes its inspiration from the

traditional Aboriginal outback shelter, or ‘wiltja’. With two treatment rooms and a designer outdoor shower, Spa Kinara offers guests a menu of signature treatments using both the LI’TYA spa care range and a posy of outback botanicals, including the cure-all irmangka-irmangka (Salted Emu Bush) supplied by the Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (NPY) Womens Council social enterprise.

In 2015, architect Max Pritchard was commissioned to design the stylish new balconies for each guest tent, creating contemporary outdoor living areas while enhancing views of Uluru. The balconies were fitted with day beds, armchairs and EcoSmart fireplaces, extending the luxury of Longitude 131° outdoors.

For the first time, artworks and artefacts commissioned from local First Nations artists were introduced to guest tents, following a collaboration between Longitude 131° and nearby communities and providing a rich mix of ancient concepts and modern techniques. These were combined with stylish new fabrics and soft furnishings which reflect the rich ochres, midnight blues and subtle greens of the desert.

The Baillie Lodges signature “Baillie Bed” was introduced in all tents, while new staff uniforms were designed exclusively by Australian bush outfitters RM Williams. Furniture was commissioned by Arthur G and Pierre and Charlotte Julian, along with dining ceramics by Malcolm Greenwood.

Central to a stay at Longitude 131° is its selection of signature experiences – exclusive guided excursions to some of the most spectacular locations around Uluru and neighbouring Kata Tjuta. Options include a sunset walk at the base of Uluru as the rock’s dramatic Kantju Gorge is illuminated in vivid evening light, or a sunrise expedition to the Walpa Gorge among the dome formations of Kata Tjuta.

Mohammed

Yousef Al-Bloushi

61 www.cpmagazine.net

Please introduce yourself to our readers.

My name is Mohammed Yousef Al-Bloushi a TV Host on Kuwait television with an educational field background

Tell us about your education.

I got my bachelor’s degree in Library and information science from PAAET in 2009 and my Master’s degree also in LIS from Kuwait University in 2014.

Why or what inspired you to study LIS?

As they say information is power and studying library and information science qualifies you to be more helpful to people to seek the right and trustworthy information resources, especially nowadays with the rapid growth of information accuracy is required.

How did you get into acting and becoming a TV Host?

I started acting in 2007 in short films like a hobby. It came from my passion of cinema. I kept participating in few short films which I consider was a tryout and it wasn’t close to something serious. I stopped thinking about it in 2011 when I started doing my Masters but still the passion exists and also being a TV host was on my mind since 2011 but I’ve waited almost 10 years to start and as they say it’s never too late.

How did your upbringing affect the way you approached your career?

Well I was excited to watch TV since I was a child. Specially KTV2 and during the weekend I enjoyed watching its different programs during the 1990’s and it really helped to develop my English speaking skills and also my interest in different fields and hobbies. When it comes to my qualifications, I believe that you as a person should control and add your finger print to any profession or degree you get, character and personality comes first and with it you’ll manage your career.

What’s a typical day like for you?

I really want to wake up as early as possible to hit the gym before 6 am. It was my routine before and I want to get back to it as laziness and junk food won’t get us anywhere.

The most important thing when you are in front of the camera is?

For me facing the camera is like a conciliation meeting with one of your best friends. You want to be cool and humorous on one side and seriously and gentle on the other side.

It sounds like making sure your guest is comfortable and relaxed is super important. How do you go about making your guests feel less nervous as you interview them?

As long as you know what your guest will talk about and making them know that you know it, it will be relaxing and comfortable for them. A brief communication will be good to boost their confidence during the interview and in the end we are the ones who’ll learn new information from the guest not the vice-versa.

If you were to boil it all down, is there any one thing you think makes an interview great?

The more the guest is confident, the more the interview gets great. It’s all on the guest the host in my point of view only manages the conversation. If you notice the most memorable interviews are based on the way the guest answers and when it comes to the hosts, they need to know how to ask and tweak the questions to make them suitable for the guest character.

What’s been your favorite part of hosting your show, “Mic. On”?

Well, everyone is helpful and kind and I really enjoyed working with all of them. The show was focusing on interviewing singers which was a new experience for me and I really like the program and the reaction it got. It was out of the box idea and it was a new visionary program on KTV2.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words? Be-care-ful.

62 NOVEMBER 2022
63 www.cpmagazine.net

What did you learn from your biggest failure?

It’s time to say your failure is your biggest lesson. But to be more honest failure comes to everyone. Some people like to repeat it and some like to live in it and some try to escape it. I’ve learned that no matter what happens to you, keep yourself optimistic because nothing will last forever. Either it’s good or bad.

What is your life motto? Any favourite inspirational quote(s)?

I really like the quote that says “The chase is better than the catch”

What is your own definition of happiness?

Focus on what you have and be satisfied about it and appreciate the wins and losses in your life.

What is your biggest achievement so far?

Well to be honest I never considered any achievement as the big achievement but so far I’m proud of what’ve achieved in my career because my path was full of challenges and obstacles.

What would you like to achieve?

Perhaps doing a longer interviews with it being divided to episodes with guests who have a great knowledge to share with us in any field.

What’s your favourite music?

Mostly I’m into classical Arab music and I enjoy listening to soundtracks.

Why are you so obsessed with everything vintage?

It started from my passion of cinema too. I’ve always preferred watching films from the 50’s 60’s and the 70’s. It later inspired my style in general.

Do you have any other secret talent(s)?

Let’s say I used to like martial arts and especially boxing.

What are some of your other hobbies?

I like reading and going to cinema “giving it an event treatment“ and I also started into horse-riding because it’s something I’ve dreamed about since my childhood.

Your message for our readers and your fans. Don’t let anyone let you down. Be proud of yourself, be optimistic and avoid negativity in all of its forms.

What’s your special message for “MOVEMBER”?

To all dear men, please keep yourselves in good shape and good health. Maintain yourself in a great state of mind and go visit doctors and specialists if you feel anything unusual happening to your body.

Your message for us at CP magazine. Thank you so much Mr. Jameel Arif and everyone in CP magazine for your great efforts , and thank you so much for choosing me as the person on the cover for this issue , best of luck always

If there’s one item that feels like a true companion piece to a pair of handmade shoes, it’s an elegant, timeless handbag. NEW NOVEMBER RELEASES

The Queen: Her Life

Painfully shy, Elizabeth Windsor’s personality was well suited to her youthful ambition of living quietly in the country, raising a family, and caring for her dogs and horses. But when her uncle, King Edward VIII, abdicated, she became heir to the throne— embarking on a journey that would test her as a woman and queen.

Ascending to the throne at only 25, this self-effacing monarch navigated endless setbacks, family conflict, and occasional triumphs throughout her 70 years as the Queen of England. As her mettle was tested, she endeavored to keep the monarchy relevant culturally, socially, and politically, often in the face of resistance from inside the institution itself. And yet the greatest challenges she faced were often inside her own family, forever under intense scrutiny; from rumors about her husband’s infidelity, her sister’s marital breakdown, Princess Diana’s tragic death, to the recent departure of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Have I Told You This Already?: Stories I Don’t Want to Forget to Remember

by Lauren Graham

Candid, insightful, and wildly entertaining essays about life, love, and lessons learned as an actress in Hollywood, from the beloved star of Gilmore Girls and New York Times bestselling author of Talking as Fast as I Can.

With her signature sense of humor and down-to-earth storytelling, Lauren Graham opens up about her years working in the entertainment business—from the sublime to the ridiculous—and shares personal stories about everything from family and friendship to the challenges of aging gracefully in Hollywood. In "RIP Barneys New York," she writes about an early job as a salesperson at the legendary department store -- and the time she inadvertently shoplifted; in "Ne Oublie" she warns us about the perils of coming from an extremely forgetful family; and in "Actor-y Factory" she recounts what a day in the life of an actor looks like (unless you’re Brad Pitt).

Filled with surprising anecdotes, sage advice, and laugh-outloud observations, Graham's latest collection of all-new, original essays showcases the winning charm and wit that she's known for.

In the early 2000s, Adrian Hong was a soft-spoken Yale undergraduate looking for his place in the world. After reading a harrowing account of life inside North Korea, he realized he had found a cause so pressing that he was ready to devote his life to it.

What began as a trip down the safe and well-worn path of organizing soon morphed into something more dangerous. Hong journeyed to China, outwitting Chinese security services as he helped asylum-seeking North Koreans escape across the border. Meanwhile, Hong's secret organization, Cheollima Civil Defense (later renamed Free Joseon), began tracking the North Korean government's activities, and its volatile third-generation ruler, Kim Jong-un. Free Joseon targeted North Korean diplomats who might be persuaded to defect, while drawing up plans for a government-in-exile. After the shocking broad-daylight assassination in 2017 of Kim Jong-nam, the dictator's older brother, Hong, along with U.S. Marine veteran Christopher Ahn, helped ferry Kim Jong-nam's family to safety. Then Hong took the group a step further.

Angels of the

As bombs fall across Europe, fourteen-year-old Lien Vinke fears that the reality of war is inescapable. Though she lives a quiet life with her mother and older sister, Elif, in their small town of Haarlem, they are no strangers to heartache, having recently suffered an immeasurable loss. And when the Nazis invade the Netherlands, joining the Dutch resistance with Elif offers just the atonement Lien craves.

Trained to shoot by their late father, the sisters are deadly wolves in sheep’s clothing. They soon find themselves entrenched in the underground movement, forging friendships with the other young recruits, and Lien even discovers a kindred spirit in a boy named Charlie. But in wartime, emotional attachments are a liability she can’t afford, especially when a deeply personal mission jeopardizes everything she holds dear—her friendships, her family, and her one shot at redemption.

Flight

It's December twenty-second and siblings Henry, Kate, and Martin have converged with their spouses on Henry's house in upstate New York. This is the first Christmas the siblings are without their mother, the first not at their mother's Florida house. Over the course of the next three days, old resentments and instabilities arise as the siblings, with a gaggle of children afoot, attempt to perform familiar rituals, while also trying to decide what to do with their mother's house, their sole inheritance. As tensions rise, the whole group is forced to come together unexpectedly when a local mother and daughter need help.

With the urgency and artfulness that cemented her previous novel Want as "a defining novel of our age" (Vulture), Strong once again turns her attention to the structural and systemic failings that are haunting Americans, but also to the ways in which family, friends, and strangers can support each other through the gaps. Flight is a novel of family, ambition, precarity, art, and desire, one that forms a powerful next step from a brilliant chronicler of our time.

Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing

In an extraordinary story that only he could tell, Matthew Perry takes readers onto the soundstage of the most successful sitcom of all time while opening up about his private struggles with addiction. Candid, self-aware, and told with his trademark humor, Perry vividly details his lifelong battle with the disease and what fueled it despite seemingly having it all.

Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing is an unforgettable memoir that shares the most intimate details of the love Perry lost, his darkest days, and his greatest friends.

Unflinchingly honest, moving, and hilarious: this is the book fans have been waiting for.

The Girls in Navy Blue

1918 - America is at war with Germany, and, for the first time in history, the US Navy has allowed women to join up alongside the men. Ten thousand of them rush to do their part. GermanAmerican Marjory Kunwald enlists in the Navy to prove her patriotism. Suffragette Blanche Lawrence to prove that women are the equal of men. My First Popsicle: An Anthology of Food and Feelings by

In Belonging, Stanford University professor Geoffrey L. Cohen applies his and others’ groundbreaking research to the myriad problems of communal existence and offers concrete solutions for improving daily life at work, in school, in our homes, and in our communities. We all feel a deep need to belong, but most of us don’t fully appreciate that need in others. Often inadvertently, we behave in ways that threaten others’ sense of belonging. Yet small acts that establish connection, brief activities such as reflecting on our core values, and a suite of practices that Cohen defines as “situation-crafting” have been shown to lessen political polarization, improve motivation and performance in school and work, combat racism in our communities, enhance health and well-being, and unleash the potential in ourselves and in our relationships. Belonging is essential for managers, educators, parents, administrators, caregivers, and everyone who wants those around them to thrive.

68 NOVEMBER 2022

In 2018, Black Panther arrived in theaters and presented one of the most iconic Black superheroes to audiences globally. Chadwick Boseman delivered a phenomenal performance as T’Challa/Black Panther which helped to propel the film into a global box office phenomena of $1.3 billion. With Boseman’s unfortunate passing in the summer of 2020, the cast and director had the daunting task of trying to not only craft a story without him but also in memory of him, threading the needle between mourning him and story progression. With that, I’m happy to report the writers and cast managed to pull together in spirt the charisma and commanding presence of Boseman and deliver a fantastic film that earns a ‘Writing a movie RIGHT’ review.

Here comes the spoilers.

Right out of the gate the film immediately addresses T’Challa’s (Boseman) death. Much like reality, the film reflects it as sudden and unexpected for the characters of the film, much like it was for the rest of us in real life. Shuri/Princess of Wakanda (Letitia Wright) is now front and center along with the Queen of Wakanda/Queen Mother Ramonda (Angela Bassett) having to carry the emotional weight of the film forward. Between these two leading ladies and the supporting cast, which is also largely female, portray strong women and an inspiring message to young women around the world.

The film then soon puts us in the middle of a United Nations meeting discussing Wakanda’s control of vibranium and the covert efforts of the other nations to acquire it by forceful means. Eventually the US resorts to using a device created by a young MIT student Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) that detects vibranium. During an under-sea exploration to find vibranium, the crew of the expedition crosses paths with a race of under-water beings exhibiting super-human strength and agility. These beings are led by the film’s antagonist, Namor/Ruler of Talocan (Tenoch Huerta).

This conflict forces Namor to reach out to Ramona and Shuri under threat of starting a war with Wakanda if they do not hunt and kill the inventor of the device. His motive is to prevent the US from continuing to search for vibranium it the sea to protect his people and keep them and their underwater home hidden from the surface world. Therefore, he makes the Queen Mother and Shuri swear to secrecy the knowledge of his people’s existence.

General Okoye (Dana Gurira) convinces the Queen Mother into taking

Shuri with her on a mission to recover the young inventor to keep her out of harm’s way, and as an attempt to help Shuir move past her mourning. The duo finds Williams and it isn’t long before the CIA attempts to capture them all. During their escape, they are ambushed by the warriors of Talocan, where Shuri and Williams are taken to the underwater home of the Talocan, and Okoye left behind.

Here the film splits frequently into different character’s perspectives: the scenes of CIA agent Everett K. Ross/The Colonizer (Marin Freeman), Shuri and Namor, and Queen mother and Okoye. The scene with tense dialogue between the Queen Mother and Okoye stands out as the most emotionally charged moment in the film. Both actresses push their performance to an Oscar-nomination worthy level and adeptly portray the two character’s duality of being painfully right and wrong at the same time. This theme goes on to repeat itself with Shuri and Namor later in the film how each character chooses to protect their people. Perhaps the largest reveal that audiences are waiting for is who will don the Black Panther outfit once more. If you guessed Shuri, you are right. Her motive behind becoming the new Black Panther is done out of vengeance for her family after Wakanda was attacked by Namor. This theme of vengeance was written near perfectly as a moral dilemma with the only other film I can say handles better is Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002).

I will stop there with the spoilers and say that of all the veteran Hollywood actors and actresses in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies, Basset’s performance stands out the tallest among them all. The rest of the female cast takes the worn out cliche of a “fierce woman” and adds the depth and humanity behind where their strength comes from, truly capturing what it means to be badass.

Do yourself a favor and go see this film, if only for the amazing performances and even better writing on display. Out of now 30 films in MCU, they finally got the villain right. This film leaves you with a final tribute to the loss Boseman was for us, all while Wakanda lives on. Bozeman Forever.

Thanks for reading Writing Movie ‘WRONGS’.

Through these snapshots of their lives, they continuously redefine themselves.

The HUAWEI nova 10 Series was designed to stay in sync with the fashionable lifestyles and trending aesthetics of the young. Created on the foundation of innovative technology, every generation of the HUAWEI nova Series strives to represent the ideology of an innovative piece of technology that has an on-trend design, powerful cameras, excellent performance, and offers smart interaction experiences. Want to take images of up to 108 MP with HUAWEI nova 10 SE? Simply enable High-Res Shot mode when using the rear camera. Digital natives who curate their social media feeds daily can utilise the 108 MP HighRes shooting, which is great for achieving a more detailed rendering of hair, skin tone, and other facial features to achieve crystal-clear shots of themselves and their friends. HUAWEI nova 10 SE’s 108 MP High-Res main camera is highly light-sensitive, producing crystal clear images, particularly in bright environments. Content creators, including those who post about plants or architecture, can also snap quality architectural or nature shots focused on textures and details – to better entertain, educate, or inspire their followers!

HUAWEI nova 10 SE, with its Multi-frame fusion algorithm in the RAW domain, provides versatile performance across a wide range of shooting scenarios. Whether you’re indoors or outdoors or in a dark or backlit

environment, the phone always nails it. As almost all social media apps nowadays follow a mobile-first design, having a phone that can easily shoot beautiful-looking photographs and videos and instantly share them on these platforms and connect with friends is incredibly helpful.

With the HUAWEI nova 10 SE, you can showcase your night-time OOTDs (outfit of the day) and group photos in a different kind of beauty. For one, the camera collects more light, thanks to its ultra-high-resolution sensor. But also, the cohesion between the multi-frame fusion algorithm in the RAW domain and advanced multi-frame noise reduction technology ensures that images taken in darker environments boast optimised brightness, increased dynamic range, and less image noise, enhancing details. When taking Night portraits, HUAWEI nova 10 SE captures the appearance and movements of the subjects more naturally and realistically.

Shooting photos against the glare of the sun can be a challenge. But you can now enjoy natural imaging, even in backlit scenes, with multiframe fusion algorithm in RAW domain, which automatically identifies backlit scenes and adjusts them to ensure pristine imaging quality. Upon activating HDR, users can enjoy clearer picture details with suppressed highlights, resulting in enhanced photos. Meanwhile, the HUAWEI nova 10 SE can identify the subject, background, and other elements within the image. Simply touch the shutter to capture vivid portrait shots that highlight the subject’s best features.

In addition, the HUAWEI nova 10 SE can also provide carefree vlog creation. It has the function of Continuous Front/Rear Recording. This word can apply to other sounds too: you could say the wind is whispering. Whispers really do sound a lot like "Psst psst psst" to anyone who can't hear the exact words. HOROSCOPES

(March 21 - April 19)

ARIES

The Universe will ask you to do some serious purging this month, dear Aries, as three planets make their way through transformative Scorpio and the sector of your chart that governs death and rebirth. Use this energy to move away from people or situations that have been weighing you down as you recommit to those that support and lift you.

Meanwhile, Mars, your planetary ruler, is in the midst of its retrograde journey through Gemini and asking you to reflect upon the actions that have led you to this point. Acknowledging and moving past unhealthy behavioral patterns will be a major lesson for you now, especially on November 11, making it important that you take a compassionate yet honest look at yourself.

Luckily, you’ll benefit from some extra love and attention from the Universe, starting when sweet Venus makes her way into Sagittarius and the spiritual sector of your chart on the fifteenth. This planetary placement can help you find the light at the end of any dark tunnels you might have stumbled into, though you’ll need to be proactive about finding your gratitude and opening your heart to joy.

LEO (July 23 - August 22)

The Universe is asking you to process a lot right now, sweet Leo, as the sun, Mercury and Venus all travel through Scorpio and your solar fourth house. This celestial dance encourages you to nurture your heart and mind while taking an honest look at your identity and what’s important to you. Scorpio season dares you to be vulnerable, so you might feel less career-focused and more concerned with family matters or intimate connections.

However, there could also be particularly intense moments, because the stars align to reveal where there might be abuse or toxicity in your dynamics. Don’t be afraid to step into your power or walk away if you feel someone isn’t respecting you, even if the idea of doing so is scary at first. Important lessons around setting boundaries might come into play during the Taurus full moon on November 8, and self-preservation will be a major theme for you. A desire to succeed in your professional and personal lives can give you the strength to finally seek escape from anyone or anything that has been holding you down, while emotional closure will also be up for grabs on an internal level.

(November 22 - December)

SAGITTARIUS

There will be a wellspring of activity happening below the surface for you this month, dear Sagittarius, as the sun, Venus and Mercury make their way through the sector of your chart that governs the subconscious. The transformative nature of the Scorpion’s energy can push you to evolve past old beliefs or behaviors that no longer align with who you are, as your impending solar return asks you to examine how you can grow throughout the next year.

Unfortunately, thanks to the retrograde journey of Mars through Gemini, change won’t come as simply as you might hope. Finding balance will feel like a tall order right now, especially if you’re in the midst of some personal upheaval or a dramatic transition.

Luckily, you’ll begin to feel lighter and more supported by the Universe once Venus enters your sign on November 15, bringing grace to your aura that can help you weather any storms that might find you. Trusting your heart will play a huge role in finding your way right now, though the entrance of Mercury into your sign two days later asks that you not completely abandon logic. Meditation can help you align both your heart and mind, providing you with clarity and guidance in profound and meaningful ways.

TAURUS (April 20 - May 20)

“Harmony” will be a keyword for you this month, dear Taurus, as the sun, Venus and Mercury continue to journey through Scorpio and your solar seventh house. These vibes are all about embracing healthy companionship, grace and self-care as the stars encourage you to lean into love.

Unfortunately, rocky waters might manifest when Venus opposes Uranus on November 5, threatening to usher in some unexpected drama while throwing you for a major loop. Restless energy could also stir up trouble in your closest relationships, but try not to act or speak impulsively, especially if emotions are running high.

You’ll feel a shift when Venus, your planetary ruler, enters sparkling Sagittarius on the fifteenth, helping you to better understand where your heart should be committed. Being vulnerable with others will suddenly feel safer and more appealing, though you’ll want to make sure you’re not ignoring red flags simply because you have chemistry with someone.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20)

The power of change will be on your side this month, sweet Gemini, as the sun, Mercury and Venus travel through transformative Scorpio and your solar sixth house. This cosmic climate encourages you to adopt new and healthier habits, though proceeding with this personal evolution will take dedication and hard work on your part.

Unfortunately, with Mars traveling in reverse through your sign, finding the motivation and momentum to modify your ways might feel like an uphill battle. Permit yourself to take things slowly, but try to use this energy as an opportunity to analyze your daily routines and the direct impact they have on your health.

Restricting substances like sugar, caffeine and alcohol will also be to your benefit, and you’ll quickly realize the effect it has on your energy level and physical endurance. Don’t worry, though. There’s no need to completely abandon your guilty pleasures, though moderation can help you enjoy the best of both worlds.

VIRGO (August 23 - September)

Your wit will be quick and your instincts strong this month, dear Virgo, as the sun, Mercury and Venus all travel through Scorpio and the sector of your chart that governs communication and thought processes. A hunger for new information and truth drives you right now, though these vibes can border on the obsessive, so you’ll need to keep tabs on the amount of detail you ingest in one sitting. The psychic nature of this cosmic climate allows you to read others more easily, though setting boundaries will be important when it comes to protecting your own energy.

Disorganization threatens to throw off your game around November 10, when Mercury squares off with restrictive Saturn. Issues might also arise if you’ve been trying to juggle too much on your own, making it important that you be willing to ask others for help if you need it. Clerical errors could create issues around the office, so be sure to double-check your work before handing it in.

(September 23 - October)

LIBRA

Financial growth and future security will take up the bulk of your focus this month, dear Libra, as the sun, Mercury and Venus travel through Scorpio. This cosmic climate can trigger your need for stability, inspiring you to build something that can stand the test of time.

Luckily, you’ll also have an edge when it comes to business negotiations, so don’t be afraid to ask for what you’re worth. If you’re in a serious relationship, discussions around operating as a fiscal team might manifest around November 6, helping you and your partner get on the same page monetarily. These vibes are also perfect for revisiting your joint or personal budgets, looking for ways to cut expenditures while shifting a little extra moolah into your savings account.

A flirtatious vibe permeates the air once sweet Venus enters Sagittarius on the fifteenth, putting you in the mood to adore and be adored. Expect to see an increase in cheeky banter in your daily life, and don’t be afraid to flash those pearly whites at someone you have your eye on.

(December 22 - January 19)

CAPRICORN

You might feel as though your social circle is revolving around you this month, dear Capricorn, as the sun, Mercury and Venus travel through Scorpio and the sector of your chart that governs the community. This cosmic climate inspires you to organize gatherings with your nearest and dearest, though a temptation to play matchmaker among your friends could also come into play. Don’t be afraid to blend your friendship groups or help others get ahead through arranging connections, understanding that there are enough opportunities and love to go around.

Unfortunately, the Scorpio energy can sometimes get a little possessive, which means sharing might not seem very appealing at first. However, the assistance you give now will form lasting and loyal bonds, so remember to be generous yet discerning with your contacts.

You’ll notice a shift when Venus enters Sagittarius and your solar twelfth house on November 15, putting you in a more private mood. It’s okay if you want to keep a tighter circle throughout the remainder of the month, especially if you begin to feel burned out socially.

(January 20 - February 18)

AQUARIUS

Finding a balance between work and play might be a tall order this month, dear Aquarius, as the sun, Mercury and Venus travel through the sector of your chart that governs career ambitions. This celestial dance will open major doors for you professionally, though these opportunities won’t come without their hang-ups, especially when Venus opposes Uranus on November 5.

Meanwhile, Mars is in the midst of its retrograde journey through Gemini, creating a block when it comes to your creativity and lust for life. Workrelated demands might chip away at your physical and mental endurance, leaving you with little energy left for your friends or personal interests.

Luckily, the vibe begins to lighten once Venus enters Sagittarius on the fifteenth, which could bring a new love interest into your life. Though you’ll still be busy with your occupational agenda, some light flirting online can help break up each day. Don’t be afraid to rely on technology to keep your relationships alive and thriving, especially once Mercury enters the sign of the Archer on November 17.

CANCER (June 21 - July 22)

You’ll be filled with artistic inspiration and creative ideas this month, dear Cancer, as the sun, Mercury and Venus glide through Scorpio and the sector of your chart that governs self-expression. Use this energy as an excuse to let your imagination run wild, as long as doing so feels good and is providing you with reasons to be optimistic.

Unfortunately, the vibe could turn at a moment’s notice as Mars moves retrograde through the sector of your chart that governs the subconscious. Fears or a lack of confidence could cause you to pull back even when your mind and heart are screaming to move toward the future. However, you might want to use discernment on the fifth and eighth, when Uranus becomes agitated in the skies. You’ll begin to feel more work-oriented and in the mood for structure once Venus enters Sagittarius on November 15, only to be followed by Mercury two days later. These planetary shifts remind you of the importance of working hard for your dreams, inspiring you to take a more serious approach toward the fantasies you’ve been carrying through most of the month.

(October 23 - November)

SCORPIO

The cosmic climate this month is a bittersweet one for you, dear Scorpio, because the stars align to bring you both blessings and challenges. On the one hand, you’ll be feeling clearheaded and motivated to wholeheartedly work toward your goals as the sun, Mercury and Venus all travel through your sign.

Unfortunately, Mars, your planetary ruler, is in the midst of its retrograde journey through Gemini, which could cause you to second-guess your abilities. Issues from the past could also put obstacles on your path, making it important that you take an honest look at yourself and your relationships, cutting ties with anyone or anything that tends to get in the way of your dreams.

Stepping into your power might require you to do quite a bit of internal work, especially when the Gemini moon cozies up to Mars on November 11. Lean into your logic right now, discrediting negative thought patterns that might be playing games with your confidence. Emotional or mental exhaustion could also cause you to feel unmotivated, and you’ll likely need to schedule some extra time for solitude and relaxation.

(February 19 - March 20)

PISCES

Though Scorpio season tends to be one of the more intense and rocky times of the year, you’ll benefit from some additional support from beyond the veil as a series of celestial bodies travel through your solar ninth house. That’s right, dear Pisces: While other members of the zodiac are struggling with personal upheaval, you’ll be flying high on a cloud of optimism and faith in the bigger picture.

However, that doesn’t mean this month won’t have its profound moments, because Scorpio energy loves to reveal juicy secrets. Your emotional bonds will begin to intensify, helping you reach new depths in your closest companionships. However, you should keep a vigilant eye out for red flags lest you be blinded by rose-colored glasses.

The energy begins to shift once Venus makes its way into Sagittarius on November 15, followed by Mercury two days later. This planetary placement brings some luck to your career ambitions, though you’ll need to believe in yourself and your ideas if you want to get ahead. Don’t be afraid to speak up around the office or share your unique perspective with your boss, even if your confidence is a bit shaky.
