A BOOK REVIEW BY GILL SHERRY
Book Title: When The Apricots Bloom Author: Gina Wilkinson Unsurprisingly, I’m always drawn to books set in the Middle East so I’d been looking forward to reading this debut novel by Gina Wilkinson. Set in Baghdad in 2002, it tells the story of three very different women living under Saddam Hussein’s tyrannical regime. The book was inspired by the author’s own experience of Iraq where she lived as a naïve foreigner under the defiant dictator’s rule and witnessed first-hand the lengths people go to, to protect the ones they love. Her knowledge of the troubled country provides authenticity to the story and a vivid sense of place. The reader is transported directly into Huda’s backyard where the sweet scent of apricots is soured by her husband’s bitter resentment and where darkness swallows lies and disguises fear. Backlit by the flames from a neighbouring oil refinery, suspense hangs heavy in the air. Ally is the wife of an Australian diplomat, but no amount of immunity can protect her from the eyes and ears of the mukhabarat (Saddam’s network of secret police), or the wagging tongues of the Iraqi people. Curiosity and boredom result in her raising suspicion and exposing lies, a foolish and unnecessary risk when Iraq is virtually cut off from the rest of the world. Frustratingly labelled as a ‘dependent spouse’, Ally’s character highlights the challenges faced by diplomats and their partners when cultures collide and prejudices breed. ‘…like the exotic parrots at al-Ghazl pet market, the women soon went off their food, drooped, and plucked out their own feathers.’
Huda wants nothing more than to befriend the lonely outsider. Instead, she is forced to spy on the diplomat’s wife, her role as an informant both inalienable and dangerous. Huda’s dilemma is cleverly and sympathetically examined, her fear of the mukhabarat constantly wrestling with her inbred courage and loyalty. As the plot gathers pace, the lies grow out of control and the secrets begin to spill. Reluctantly, Huda asks for help from her childhood friend, Rania, but past betrayals and bitter resentment result in ongoing suspicion and doubt, feelings shared by the reader throughout. ‘The cold ball she’d been carrying in her stomach returned. It was spiky now, as if wrapped in barbed wire.’ The women’s stories are intricately woven and cleverly told, their characters strong and convincing. Despite their obvious flaws, it’s hard not to root for all three women as unexpected revelations reveal themselves within the author’s descriptive prose. ‘… six mannequins in rainbow-coloured house coats... were lined up against a wall like they were waiting for a firing squad.’ Although a work of fiction, the educational value of this book should not be overlooked. It provides an honest insight into Saddam Hussein’s dictatorship and the rules his people were forced to observe. It’s a tale of private hatred and public worship. A story of suppression, blackmail and violence that exposes the despicable war crimes in Iraq’s modern history without being unnecessarily graphic. A powerful and thought-provoking novel that’s as beautiful as it is disturbing. www.cpmagazine.net

1 Hotel Central Park
Just steps away from Central Park, 1 Hotel Central Park is a mosscovered nature oasis in the middle of the hustle and bustle of an urban lifestyle. Inspired by nature and the idea of protecting it, the hotel has taken exceptional measures to make a positive environmental impact. For starters, the hotel is designed using reclaimed materials, and organic bed linens and non-toxic, ecofriendly mattresses are present in each room. Bathroom faucets are equipped with a water filtration system and in-room cups made from recycled wine bottles are available in the rooms for drinking purposes. All bathrooms are also equipped with a shower timer as a reminder to keep showers to a maximum of five minutes to conserve water. Happenings outside of the sacred sleeping area include complimentary wellness classes by certified trainers, meaningful meetings that advocate, educate, and engage, and Central Park tours led by an expert Conservancy guide. Jams, the onsite restaurant, serves farm-to-table dishes with organic, sustainably and locally sourced ingredients. At the Lobby Farmstand, guests will find complimentary fresh seasonal fruits that are imperfect in appearance but perfect in taste, which would otherwise be discarded by producers or grocers.
Park Hyatt New York
Sleek, serene, and elegant are three words to describe this ultra-luxurious hotel in the middle of Midtown. Park Hyatt NYC occupies the first 25 floors of One57, a 90-story skyscraper. It can’t be missed across from Carnegie Hall and two blocks from Central Park as the building will mesmerize you with its beauty. The spacious rooms (475 square feet and larger) with floor-toceiling windows are minimalistic with muted tones, stone floors, dark wood, and contemporary furniture. The common areas of the hotel are called The Study and The Living Room in hopes that guests will feel they’re at home. Unique artwork is a staple here with over 350 pieces commissioned from the Museum of Modern Art. A highlight piece is the installation above the bar that contains nearly 1,000 pieces of glass. Guests can spend an entire day at Park Hyatt’s 25th floor spa where the 65-foot indoor swimming pool is claimed to have the most beautiful views in the city.
Soho Grand Hotel
Soho Grand has some of the swankiest rooms in NYC and holds the title of the first luxury downtown boutique hotel. The 17-story chic industrial-inspired, airy space has designer touches with upscale amenities. Soho Grand is home to a classic hotel bar, an American diner, a tropical outdoor restaurant, and a sophisticated club room. Other perks include a fitness center, free bikes, free movie screenings and pet-friendly amenities. www.cpmagazine.net

Wythe Hotel
Wythe wore many hats before becoming a hotel. In 1901, what is now a boutique hotel was once a barrel and rope factory. Elements of the past can be seen when stepping into any of the guest rooms, in the exposed brick walls, factory windows, reclaimed wood, and concrete floors. The industrial-chic hotel is located on the Brooklyn waterfront, in the heart of the vibrant Williamsburg neighborhood. Wythe is also an incubator for artists. In each room at Wythe, you’ll find original artwork from artists within the community. Wythe’s hope is to foster a connection between guests and the wider creative community of Brooklyn. Dining options include the newly opened Bar Blondeau, which serves French plates and breathtaking views of Manhattan and Le Crocodile, a brasserie serving French fare.
The Hoxton, Williamsburg
The Hoxton Williamsburg‘s nine-story building at the site of a former water tower factory has retained a few industrial touches. The eccentric, retro lobby is stocked with locally sourced vintage furniture, fireplaces, bookshelves packed with works about art, and chandelier styles that date back to the 1970s. The rooms have floor-to-ceiling city views and are compact but have fold-down desks, drawers under the bed, and a wardrobe rail in lieu of a dresser. There is also a mini library curated specifically for each room. 16
NOVEMBER 2021
Smyth Tribeca
Smyth Tribeca is a newly opened, independent, 14-story, 100-room neighborhood hotel. It’s a destination for guests seeking a stylish, minimalist environment. The design is a mix of urban, classic, and contemporary. Smyth has 12 different room types, all with floor-to-ceiling windows and large marble bathrooms and walk-in rain showers. The residential style lobby is meant to mimic a home living room and the bar is the perfect gathering spot for Tribeca’s creatives to mingle.
Arlo NoMad
If there’s one thing to take away from this hotel, it’s that it has absolutely stunning views of the Empire State Building, which is a mere two blocks away. The rooms are teeny-tiny (think college dorm style) at 150 square feet, but the mesmerizing floor-to-ceiling window wall makes up for the lack of space. Arlo NoMad has a 31st-floor rooftop bar, a 2ndfloor bar, a bodega, and a Middle Eastern restaurant. Check out their events calendar for DJ happenings and workout classes.
The Redbury
The Redbury NYC originally opened as a women’s hotel in 1903. It was the first hotel in the city exclusively for women, male guests were not allowed above the ground floor. The hotel immediately became a hit and even had 200 women on a waiting list to stay. Today, of course, people of any gender are allowed to stay in the hotel. The chic rooms have walls adorned with picture frames and homey pieces such as record players. The color red runs predominately throughout the hotel…go figure! The Redbury has a lounge, an Italian restaurant, a Roman-style aperitivi bar, and a café. In 2012, the hotel was designated as a historical landmark.
TWA Hotel
The TWA Flight Center was completed in 1962 but closed in 2001 when the airline became extinct. Today, the architectural wonder has been transformed into a hotel that serves as both an airport hotel as well as a sanctuary for those with longer layovers. The surprisingly quiet guest rooms have thrilling views of JFK’s runways. Views are also spectacular from the infinity pool. TWA Hotel offers guests a cocktail lounge inside of an inactive plane, the world’s largest hotel fitness center, museum exhibits, and a Twister Room where you can play a wallto-wall version of the game. Rooms are available for day and overnight bookings. www.cpmagazine.net

6 SECRETS TO INCREASE YOUR SPEED Fatema AlOthman
Running as a sport encourages many fitness enthusiasts to strive for their personal best. Whether you want to run faster and improve your record or simply increase your speed and fitness level, strength training and speed workouts are a given. Check out these 6 secrets anyone can use to increase speed and further the quest for fitness.
1. Focus on Form
Improving your running form can help increase your speed and help you avoid injury. Apply good running form, forget the technicalities, and keep it simple.
2. Speed Workouts
Speed workouts are a form of interval training, where you include fast running intervals into your workout routine. Speed intervals can activate slow-twitch and intermediate muscle fibers, which increases your aerobic capacity, or the ability to breathe in more air.
3. Strength Training
Strength training increases muscle size, and as muscle size increases so does the capacity for blood, oxygen, and ATP cell energy. Strength training is controlled exercises that help improve muscle quality, balance, and overall fitness.
4. HIIT Training
HIIT stands for high-intensity interval training and is one of the quickest ways to get fit.
5. Explosive Workouts
Explosive training helps convert more muscle fibers to fast-twitch muscle fibers, thus increasing your power output and speed. Add a few sets of explosive exercises into your strength training routine.
6. Rest and Recover
When doing any type of speed training it is important to remember to rest when needed. Resting between sets allows you to increase power for short periods, so your body can adapt to a faster pace. Take at least one day a week to rest your entire body by abstaining from exercise.
Conclusion Increasing your speed can be as easy as slightly altering your current workouts. Keeping your routines mixed makes them interesting and helps you avoid burnout. And most importantly, try to have fun, and your quest for fitness will soon become an enjoyable part of your life. www.cpmagazine.net

FormerlyMe.com presents “Personal Records”
WHAT IS FORMERLYME?
80lbs Concentration Curls (35.28 kg)
Jim West
FormerlyMe is an online movement to motivate and inspire people to become the best version of themselves by showing them my journey and experience in trying a new workout and lifestyle regime every 30 days. Every post, update, and video is ‘formerly me’ as I endeavor to become the best version of myself and become FormerlyMe. Each month CP Magazine will showcase a part of my journey to becoming the best version of myself. I hope that in turn this inspires and motivates you to start your own journey as well. For this month’s story we will focus on the “Personal Records” days of my journey. 20
NOVEMBER 2021
As my second year of my journey to become the best version of myself was coming to a close, I started to focus on the weight training more. With that came the goal of seeing just how much weight I could move. The feeling of strength is one that I recommend to everyone. The greatest challenge to yourself is to test what you are capable of. Personal Records or PR for short became the new challenge to myself.
360lbs Tricep Press (163.29kg) With every new PR I would reach, I felt stronger and stronger. Simply the best feeling in the world knowing that I can move a significant amount of weight. Also while building muscle you raise your metabolism which helps you lose weight in the long term. Strength training should be a main focus of any plan to get healthy and become the best version of yourself! 1500lbs Calf Raises (680.389kg) Pushing myself would mean finding the right balance between the amount of weight and proper form to avoid injuries. Injuries are huge setbacks to the journey and at my age (44 years old) would take several weeks to recover. Pushing your limits is good, but injuries are very bad.
Follow my journey online at FormerlyMe.com and on the YouTube channel. Next month I will cover my more unique experiences I had in 2021. Until next time that has been FormerlyMe! facebook.com/FormerlyMe twitter.com/MeFormerly instagram.com/formerlymeofficial 1270lbs Leg Press (576.06kg) www.cpmagazine.net

NOVEMBER 2021
What did you study?
I studied applied science with a major in horticulture at the university of Queensland. Then continued later on achieved my masters in urban horticulture at the university of Melbourne, Australia. Although, I would like to give a shout to Proceso T.Ramos Jr. my colleague and guide into the world of Kuwaiti native plants.
What made you choose such an offbeat, unconventional and uncommon career?
I’ve always felt like a had a deep connection to nature where I’ve felt at one with it. I think. Also, Kuwait has a lot to offer as we have such unique flora and fauna that’s unique to the Middle East as well to Kuwait itself that is undervalued and underappreciated.
What sparked your love affair with plants?
There is that sense of wonder and awe to see a barren desert suddenly transformed to an array of jewel colours and to reflect on the process behind what these plants had to do survive the long hot punishing summers of Kuwait. It is quite fascinating.
What was the first plant you fell in love with?
The first plant I ever had was a Purple Heart which I believe I got when I was around 9 years old. My dad got it for me on a trip to Wafra farms, I practically killed it by over caring for it, I over watered it and I actually don’t think it lasted a week with me.
What is your very favorite plant and why?
I Actually, really love my echinopsis from mini my cactus collection it been one of most doted plant I have because it has travelled with me all the way to Kuwait, it almost did not make it here so we have had quite an intense relationship.
Are there any plants you’ve had to break up with?
Yes, for sure I’ve had to give up an Areca palm because it had an aphid infestation and it had to be isolated as it was patient zero and I didn’t want the insects to transfer to other indoor plants I had. Sadly, the neem oil treatment didn’t work so it had to be given away to a nursery to see if they could treat it.
Most of my inspiration come from things around me and my everyday experience with the plants that surround me. Why are plants so important in the world?
They are important as they are a part of a life cycle that is interconnected. They ensure our survival with the help of animals and insects of course.
Any tips for looking after houseplants?
Get to know your plants there is a no size fits all methodology towards caring for your plants each plant is unique in its own watering, pruning, fertilizing and propagating regiment.
Is garden design an art form?
Yes, because you need to think about what colors complement one another, which forms and shapes also complement one another and the overall aesthetic of the place. “How am I trying to make it feel? Is it going to be colourful? Or more like a Mexican vibe or more pruned and tidier? “European aesthetic, or a more tropical aesthetic?” where it more lush. Additional thoughts go towards complementing the construction or the building in order for it to be inviting and for there to be cohesion between the two also taking consideration of the location and the user’s preferences all play a role in how all the final results is attained. However, it must be noted that there is a science behind it as well as; plant form, growth habits, water fertilizing and soil need to be considered to ensure the gardens success and longevity. www.cpmagazine.net
25
What is your creative approach when evaluating a site for a new design?
There are distinct steps that I take when evaluating a new site these are: 1-Check out the site, the amount of space available and assess the sunlight, soil and infrastructure that is already in place. 2-Have a consultation with the user on what kind of garden the user wants (edible, romantic, modern, low maintenance, family etc.) and their budget. 3-Selecting plants, that match the location, user’s needs and budget that complement one another and give a year-round interest.
What are your future plans?
Career wise I hope to continue working in the field of research focusing on sustainable landscape and urban infrastructure development. While the dream, is to eventually own my own farm growing speciality crops and taking more time to pursue my art and see where it leads me. Although as the saying goes “if you want to make god laugh, tell him your plans”, so who knows.
What are some of your other hobbies?
I love to exercise going to the gym helps me to destress and focus, as well as read books usually self-help, art, plant and romance genres and paint or draw in my free time.
You are also an artist? Please tell us how and when did you discover this talent?
My parents used to enroll us in summer time activities in the school holidays the usually involved swimming or karate and it wasn’t really my cup of tea. They noticed that I liked to scribble quite a bit in my school books and decided involving me in art maybe a better use of my time.
The first plant I ever had was a Purple Heart.
What mediums you use and where do you take the inspirations from?
I used to do oil painting and pencil and pen sketches but lately I have been dabbling with watercolors. Most of my inspiration come from things around me and my everyday experience with the plants that surround me.
What message you like to convey through your art? A sense of playfulness, more of a whimsical feel nothing too serious. Also, sometime try not to plan too much and just see where the art takes me as there are no rules.
What do you do with your art? Do you sell or exhibit them somewhere?
My art is more of an outlet where I like to express myself, with no really intention of selling or exhibiting it solely for financial gain but if an opportunity arose where I could at least share it for viewing pleasure I wouldn’t mind. So far i generally i give some of my work away to friends and loved ones.
Your message for us at CP magazine.
To grow more greenery around yourselves and get your families involved it is such a lovely bonding experience as well as reaping all the benefits that plants give us whether it is: physical, emotional or mental well-being! So get planting! 26

Sustainability lives at the heart of the Six Senses brand. From its simple beginnings with a single resort in 1995, Six Senses is now recognized as a pioneer of sustainable practices, demonstrating that uncompromisingly gorgeous hideaways can live in harmony with local communities and ecosystems. And it is an integral part of the resort’s DNA at Six Senses Zighy Bay. Flanked between a gently shelving bay and the lunar-like rugged mountains of Oman’s Musandam Peninsula, the property is a world away from mundane routine yet only two hours from Dubai International Airport. Six Senses Zighy Bay embraces all that makes this unique region special and allows visitors to explore it in their own time and space. Through the resort, the peninsula itself has come to be recognized as an international destination with travelers often including this remote area as part of their journeys through Oman and the UAE. The resort has integrated itself with the local community and culture, working with the authorities and people to help grow and develop the region. The setting of this beautiful ethnic village-style resort and reserved marina is outstanding, with dramatic mountains on one side and a 1.6-kilometer sandy beach on the other. This is an ideal place for relaxing and rejuvenating experience, especially for those who are looking to get away from the stress of their hectic modern lives. Adventures start with an adrenaline-charged paraglide arrival into Zighy Bay which provides guests with a birds-eye view of the resort’s amazing setting and breathtaking scenery. If you happen to be near Dibba Marina, you may want to try the speed boat ride to Zighy Marina and enjoy the resort’s mesmerising view from the sea. All Six Senses Zighy Bay accommodations are built from natural stone and warm woods, the traditional Omani villas reflect an enclave where families can unwind in the cool indoors under high indigenous-style 30

ceilings, in the colorfully cushioned living area and on the cloudlike bed made with unbleached cotton sheets topped with guest’s choice of ergonomic pillows. The villas are carefully positioned to create privacy, located in three tiers running perpendicular to the beach accessed via winding paths shaded by date palms, fig and pomegranate trees. Each villa also features individually controlled air conditioning and ceiling fans, Nespresso coffee makers, iPod decks, music and entertainment systems, a mini-bar, local mineral water bottled onsite, a wine fridge and personalised bicycles upon check-in for repeat guests. Most important of all is the Guest Experience Maker assigned to each villa on arrival, acting as a personal butler to arrange any activities and experiences and providing seamless, unintrusive and intuitive service. The largest accommodation however is offered by the four-bedroom Beachfront Reserve located on its own private beach with amazing views of the Gulf of Oman and the Al Hajar Mountains. It features an oversized 17-metre (60-foot) private infinity pool, a home theatre, pool table, wine cellar and an elevator to the upper floor. The Six Senses Zighy Bay is suitable for all types of tourism thanks to the incredible territory where it is found: family or friends trips, adventures for the more risky, relaxation, detox and spa, as well as the most romantic spaces for couples. www.cpmagazine.net

SUSTAINABLE EFFORTS Built on sustainability, caring for the environment, and looking after local schools, hospitals and infrastructure is at the core of Six Senses Zighy Bay. In total, 80 percent of the waste created on the property (organic or glass) is recycled or upcycled on site. The water initiative system is a straightforward example of environmental responsibility with the resort’s own reverse osmosis (RO) plant and water refinery creating a self-sufficient water supply. Seawater is filtered before passing through the RO plant, with 25% being refined for pure drinking water and used for other utilities within the resort. Guests are provided with complimentary drinking water inside all villas thanks to the RO process, with the rest then used for the salt-water pool before being returned to the sea. The resort has its own closed circle sewage treatment plant on site, where 100% of the sewage effluent is recycled and used for drip irrigation for landscaping resulting in zero waste of water. More than 1,000 palm trees are located throughout the grounds providing 12 different varieties of dates. The property utilizes this local, organic favorite in a multitude of ways following the harvest season from June to August. Crushed dates are also added to other natural ingredients to create local and authentic oils used in specific treatments offered to guests at the Six Senses Spa, whilst they are also a popular source of food for the Zighy Goats that roam freely around the resort. The resort delights guests with its own on-site organic garden, comprised of approximately 30 different types of herbs. The herbs are used in a plethora of ways including adding extra flavor to signature drinks and menu items, garnishing dishes and also spa treatment ingredients. In a constant effort to try, research and grow as part of a company that drives sustainability, the property has also established an organic farm in Dibba which offers guests fresh, locally produced fruits and vegetables. ROHIT GHAI The chef who won a Michelin star in record time A new dining concept exclusive to Expo 2020 Dubai will host a glittering line-up of international guest chefs from some of the world’s finest restaurants. Our lifestyle editor José Berrocoso caught up with Ghai to find out more about his cookery roots and his plans for the future. The Jubilee Gastronomy Restaurant will welcome a rotating selection of chefs from Michelinstar restaurants and establishments featured in the ‘World’s 50 Best Restaurants’ and offer ultra-luxurious experiences that include nine-course chef’s table tasting menus, book signings and photo opportunities. Overlooking Expo’s iconic Al Wasl Plaza, the restaurant is home to an incredible dining room, lounge and rooftop bar and presents a one-of-a-kind, modern destination that promises tantalising flavours to delight the palates of all kinds of foodies. For the ultimate foodie experience, the limited-seating chef’s table experience includes limousine pick-up and drop-off, a skyline VIP cocktail reception and a nine-course gastronomy tasting menu. And the Indian chef Rohit Ghai was the guest-chef last November 11 at the Jubilee Gastronomy Restaurant. Rohit’s love affair with food began in his mother’s kitchen, in his native Punjab, India. He went on to study Indian cuisine at the Institute of Hotel Management in New Delhi, before perfecting his craft at some of most esteemed hotel groups across the country, including the Oberoi Hotels and Resorts as well as The Taj Hotels and Resorts. After moving to the UK, Rohit worked and headed kitchens at some of London’s leading Indian restaurants such as Benares, Trishna, Gymkhana, Hoppers and most recently Jamavar and Bombay Bustle. 36

CityPages Magazine: So many chefs learn to cook from their mother, what was the first thing your mum taught you how to make? Rohit Ghai: I can’t actually remember the first dish, but I do remember that she taught me how to taste and season from a really early age - how to buy spices and how to use all your senses when cooking. She was, and still is a remarkable teacher. CPM: How do you describe your style of cooking? RH: I like to take the authentic flavours of my youth and slightly reimagine them for a refined eating experience. I like to make beautiful plates of food that people enjoy and find comfort in. CPM: Which is the dish you call your Signature dish? RH: My Ghati Masala Prawns win me a fair few awards and fans! CPM: What’s your favourite dish to cook? RH: I love to cook with the very best ingredients around - so at the moment it’s game season in the UK and I’ve got some lovely venison, pheasant and quail dishes on the menu at Kutir in Chelsea. CPM: You’ve worked in several Michelin-Starred Kitchens. In your experience, what sets a Michelin-Starred dining experience apart? RH: It’s about the balance - making sure every plate of food is balanced and that overall they create a memorable experience cumulatively for the guest. You should leave the restaurant not wanting for anything else! CPM: Getting a Michelin star for Jamavar within ten months of the restaurant opening is incredibly impressive. How did you achieve this? RH: I worked and worked and worked. It was a very proud moment for me that and I am very grateful for the opportunities it gave me. CPM: Other than Indian cuisine, is there another world cuisine that gives you inspiration? RH: French food and techniques shape so much of the world of dining, and I am very grateful for my training here - it definitely helps shape my plates of food. CPM: How do see the food scene changing in India? RH: It’s great to see a greater variety of cuisines when I come back to visit - we have really broadened the offing in India, and the scene in some areas is really thriving. CPM: With international ingredients now so easily available, how do you see the Indian market growing? RH: There’s a real freedom with that, and It’s been phenomenal to witness it in the UK - you can now buy such brilliant fresh ingredients all over London, and it’s definitely resulted in more, and better representations of Indian food in Europe. CPM: What tip would you give to aspiring young chefs? RH: If you are prepared to work hard, and you trust your palate it’s the most rewarding and creative job in the world. Go for it! CPM: What are your future plans? RH: I am fortunately very busy so I get lots of offers and at the moment I have a few exciting things in the pipeline - that’s all I can say! But I would like to expand the brand further and open in more markets. It's a lot of fun. 38

SPECIAL EXPO2020 DUBAI
ALL EYES ON DUBAI Expo 2020 Dubai is a unique celebration of art, culture, music, architecture, technology and more. It is dedicated to finding solutions to the world's most pressing challenges and takes visitors on journeys packed with engaging and immersive content and programming.
by travel-expert :José Berrocoso For 170 years, the World Expo has celebrated human progress and achievement, welcoming visitors to innovate and create by sharing ideas and working together. One of the oldest and largest international events, World Expos take place every five years and last six months. Since the Great Exhibition in London in 1851, World Expos across the globe have demonstrated an unparalleled power to attract visitors and showcase future-shaping innovations. Technology unveiled at previous World Expos includes the X-ray machine, the typewriter and the first live television broadcast. World Expos have also brought us the Eiffel Tower, the Seattle Space Needle, IMAX movies, Heinz Tomato Ketchup and the ice cream cone. For the first time in World Expo history, every country has its own pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai where they can share the best of their cultures, innovation and human progress. Through the theme and the purpose, ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’, Expo 2020 Dubai is a platform to encourage creativity, innovation and collaboration across three subthemes: Sustainability, Opportunity and Mobility. The theme reflects the history of Dubai, historically called Al Wasl, or ‘the connection’. Dubai has long played an important role in connecting east and west, north and south. The vision is to build on Dubai’s role as a cross-continental gateway and deliver a World Expo that advances the potential of human collaboration, while inspiring visitors to create a positive, long-term impact for people around the world. Expo 2020 Dubai coincides with the UAE’s 50th anniversary in 2021, marking an important milestone for the country. And it´s the first World Expo to be held in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia region. If travel is the best teacher in life, then Expo 2020 Dubai is the perfect place to be educated. Just imagine who you’ll meet and what you’ll experience as you explore the world in one place. It’s a once-in-a-lifestime experience, a feast for all of your senses, and an opportunity for us all to come together today to reimage the world of tomorrow. 40
NOVEMBER 2021
SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability is one of Expo 2020’s three key subthemes and the six-month event will serve as a platform to drive change, share solutions and explore new ideas that encourage us to act collectively in order to save our planet. The subtheme touches on the environmental, economic and social dimensions of the places where we live, and looks to create positive environmental impacts on a national, regional and global scale. Expo 2020’s Sustainability Pavilion, named Terra (meaning Planet Earth) highlights the urgency of addressing negative environmental impacts, caused in large part by human behaviour, through an engaging, playful and personal experience that is designed to empower visitors, particularly children, to understand their impact on the environment, break the cycle of consumerism, and become agents of change. The pavilion also sets an example for sustainable building design, extending into Expo 2020’s postevent legacy, when it will become a Science Centre that will inspire sustainable choices for generations to come. In legacy, the Sustainability Pavilion aspires to be a self-sustaining building generating 100 per cent of its energy and water supply. Designed by Grimshaw Architects, the Sustainability Pavilion is planned to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum green building standards. Drawing inspiration from natural processes such as photosynthesis, the dynamic form of the pavilion is in service to its function, capturing energy from sunlight and fresh water from humid air. The emotive visitor experience tells the enchanting story of humankind’s relationship with nature, while addressing negative environmental impacts, caused in large part by human behaviour, helping visitors – the younger generation in particular – to understand their impact on the environment, break the cycle of consumerism, and become agents of change. Expo 2020 Dubai runs until 31 March 2022, inviting the world to join a celebration of unity, opportunity, creativity and sustainability that will help to shape a better, brighter future for everyone.
OPPORTUNITY
There’s a ripple effect in everything we do. Even one person can be the key to unlocking eight billion opportunities that can help individuals and communities create a better tomorrow, today. It’s time to unleash the potential within and be an agent of change. Witness how our lives and actions are interconnected in the Opportunity District. Meet the people worldwide who are transforming dreams and aspirations into the realities of tomorrow, and be empowered to shape the future by unlocking the potential within yourself. The Opportunity Pavilion, designed by AGi Architects, builds on the rich urban history of the “plaza” and its universal significance as a place for people to connect across age, language and culture, to celebrate our shared human experiences.
MOBILITY
Experience how the Mobility District creates connections to drive the world forward, breaking down the divide between the physical and digital worlds to build a harmonious, global society where information, ideas and goods are exchanged faster than ever before. The Mobility Pavilion, designed by the awardwinning Foster + Partners, features the world’s largest passenger lift, which will transport 160+ people at a time. The pavilion also stars a partly underground, partly open-air 330-metre track for you to see cuttingedge mobility devices in action.

KUWAIT: AN AMBITIOUS GATEWAY TO THE FUTURE by travel-expert :José Berrocoso
Kuwait is committed to sustainable development to deliver a secure and prosperous future for its economy, environment, cities and people. At the Kuwait pavilion, the past meets present to shape a far-reaching vision for the country’s future. It will be a future created by a resilient, innovative country for the well-being of everyone.
42
NOVEMBER 2021
The 5,600-square-meter pavilion highlights Kuwait’s sustainability efforts. Under the theme ‘New Kuwait, New Opportunities for Sustainability’, the pavilion details Kuwait’s past, present and future plans for ‘New Kuwait 2035’. The pavilion was designed by Italian architect Marco Pestalozza and resembles a sand dune and the country’s famed water towers at the pavilion, which historically represent Kuwait’s vast deserts and seaports. Echoing its sustainability theme, even within the core of its construction, the building has been designed in a modular manner. This will ensure that the Kuwait Pavilion can be easily dismantled and that the construction materials will be recycled when the six-month Expo2020 Dubai event concludes on March 2022. The Kuwait Pavilion further extols its sustainability theme in its outer appearance, with an architectural design inspired by the nation’s vision for sustainability. The pavilion’s exterior structure comprises a golden facade surrounded by luminous gold prisms, which are characteristic of the nation’s desert landscapes. Several elementos of the Kuwaiti culture such as music, songs and poetry have been infused to experience through activations.

The Churchill Sisters: The Extraordinary Lives of Winston and Clementine's Daughters
by Amy E. Butcher
Bright, attractive and well-connected, in any other family the Churchill girls – Diana, Sarah, Marigold and Mary – would have shone. But they were not in another family, they were Churchills, and neither they nor anyone else could ever forget it. From their father – ‘the greatest Englishman’ – to their brother, golden boy Randolph, to their eccentric and exciting cousins, the Mitford Girls, they were surrounded by a clan of larger-than-life characters which often saw them overlooked. While Marigold died too young to achieve her potential, the other daughters lived lives full of passion, drama and tragedy. Diana, intense and diffident; Sarah, glamorous and stubborn; Mary, dependable yet determined – each so different but each imbued with a sense of responsibility toward each other and their country. Far from being cosseted debutantes, these women were eyewitnesses at some of the most important events in world history, at Tehran, Yalta and Potsdam. Yet this is not a story set on the battlefields or in Parliament; it is an intimate saga that sheds light on the complex dynamics of family set against the backdrop of a tumultuous century.
Please Scream Inside Your Heart:
Dava Shastri's Last Day
The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story
by Dave Pell Please Scream Inside Your Heart is a time capsule; a real-time ride through the maddening hell that was the 2020 news cycle— when historic turmoil and media mania stretched American sanity, democracy, and toilet paper. Who better to examine this unhinged period in all of its twists and turns than news addict Dave Pell, aka the internet’s Managing Editor? Fueled by the wisdom and advice of his two Holocaust-surviving parents, for whom parts of this story were all too familiar, Pell puts the key stories of 2020 into context with pith and punch; highlighting turning points that widened America’s divisions, deepened our obsession with a media-driven civil war, and nearly knocked the country off its tracks.

Loneliest Road in America
Amy Butcher was an accomplished college professor, mentor, and writer, but in her own home, she was embarrassed and emotionally burdened by an increasingly abusive relationship. Exhausted and terrified of the ways her partner’s behavior could escalate, Amy reached out to Instagram celebrity Joy “Mothertrucker” Wiebe. Joy was a fifty-year-old wife and mother and the nation’s only female ice road trucker, a woman who maneuvered big rigs through the Alaskan wilderness along the deadliest road in America. Joy was everything Amy wanted to be: independent, fearless, and in charge of her life in a landscape dominated by men. Invited by Joy to ride shotgun, Amy found her escape on a road that was treacherous, beautiful, and exhilarating—an adventurous ride through the Alaskan wilderness that was profoundly life changing. Mothertrucker is the story of that bracing four-hundred-mile journey navigating snow-glazed overpasses, ice-blue curves, and near plummets. It’s also the stories that led them both to Alaska—an interrogation of the reality of female fear, domestic violence, and how to overcome—and an exploration into just how galvanizing friendships between women can be.
The last thing Hugh Standish, Earl of Fareham, ever wants is a wife. Unfortunately for him, his mother is determined to find him one, even from across the other side of the ocean. So, Hugh invents a fake fiancée to keep his mother’s matchmaking ways at bay. But when Hugh learns his interfering mother is on a ship bound for England, he realizes his complicated, convoluted but convenient ruse is about to implode. Until he collides with a beautiful woman, who might just be the miracle he needs. Minerva Merriwell has had to struggle to support herself and her two younger sisters ever since their feckless father abandoned them. Work as a woodcut engraver is few and far between, and the Merriwell sisters are nearly penniless. So, when Hugh asks Minerva to pose as his fiancée while his mother is visiting, she knows that while the scheme sounds ludicrous, the offer is too good to pass up.

Mothertrucker: Finding Joy on the
by Rachel Trethewey Robin Blyth has more than enough bother in his life. He's struggling to be a good older brother, a responsible employer, and the harried baronet of a seat gutted by his late parents' excesses. When an administrative mistake sees him named the civil service liaison to a hidden magical society, he discovers what's been operating beneath the unextraordinary reality he's always known. Now Robin must contend with the beauty and danger of magic, an excruciating deadly curse, and the alarming visions of the future that come with it--not to mention Edwin Courcey, his cold and prickly counterpart in the magical bureaucracy, who clearly wishes Robin were anyone and anywhere else. Robin's predecessor has disappeared, and the mystery of what happened to him reveals unsettling truths about the very oldest stories they've been told about the land they live on and what binds it. Thrown together and facing unexpected dangers, Robin and Edwin discover a plot that threatens every magician in the British Isles--and a secret that more than one person has already died to keep.

Never Fall for Your Fiancée
Will
by Nikole Hannah-Jones
by Will Smith, Mark Manson
A dramatic expansion of a groundbreaking work of journalism, The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story offers a profoundly revealing vision of the American past and present. In late August 1619, a ship arrived in the British colony of Virginia bearing a cargo of twenty to thirty enslaved people from Africa. Their arrival led to the barbaric and unprecedented system of American chattel slavery that would last for the next 250 years. This is sometimes referred to as the country’s original sin, but it is more than that: It is the source of so much that still defines the United States. The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story builds on one of the most consequential journalistic events of recent years: The New York Times Magazine’s award-winning “1619 Project,” which reframed our understanding of American history by placing slavery and its continuing legacy at the center of our national narrative.
One of the most dynamic and globally recognized entertainment forces of our time opens up fully about his life, in a brave and inspiring book that traces his learning curve to a place where outer success, inner happiness, and human connection are aligned. Along the way, Will tells the story in full of one of the most amazing rides through the worlds of music and film that anyone has ever had. Will Smith’s transformation from a fearful child in a tense West Philadelphia home to one of the biggest rap stars of his era and then one of the biggest movie stars in Hollywood history, with a string of box office successes that will likely never be broken, is an epic tale of inner transformation and outer triumph, and Will tells it astonishingly well. But it's only half the story.
WRITING MOVIE
WRONGS moviewrongs.com by: JIM WEST
Directed and Written by: John Krasinski
On a rare occasion I will watch a film in the theaters twice. Such films have been Lord of the Rings (all three films), Avengers Endgame, and the 2018 A Quiet Place. That film surprised me in how well it was directed and the story was simple yet interlaced with powerful themes of family and a parents love for their children. As a father myself it really struck a chord with me. The first word was there was no immediate plans for a sequel, but the first film was written so well it left so much room for a sequel. I like how they start with 'Day 1” of the alien attack on earth, and yet don't rely too heavily on news reports to tell the story that often films of this type tend to do. The original cast is back with Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe, and John Krasinski (in flashback scene) reprising their roles from the first film. New addition of Cillian Murphy is an excellent casting choice, but as my review will detail there was just a minor detail that could've elevate the emotional impact of the film tremendously. This film repeats some of the same beats of the first, and that is just fine. It also is paced well and strongly written. This will be a 'Writing a Movie RIGHT' review like its predecessor.
Here comes the spoilers.
The film opens up on 'Day 1' of the alien invasion. We see the small town at a baseball game and see some family moments before the world comes to a halt. Here we get a quick introduction to Cillian Murphy's character, Emmett. The aliens wreak havoc upon the town and everyone runs for their lives. Jump to the last events of the first film the remaining family members are leaving their home behind to find other survivors. After following a smoke signal they arrive across the mountain ridge they have an incident that brings the monsters out and Emmett brings them into his bunker where he has survived since the invasion. There is an exchange of dialogue where he shows his face and they recognize him as a family friend. The mother asks him if he knew their signals was Lee and he says yes he knew. She then asks him if he knew then why didn't he come to help them. The daughter looks at him with anger and says “You are nothing like him” referring to her father, Lee. More on this point later. While at his bunker, Reagan (again played perfectly by Simmonds) tunes to a radio
station that is playing the song “Beyond the Sea” on repeat. She comes up with a plan that if she can reach the radio station, which is on an island, she can broadcast the hearing aid frequency to help others defend against the monsters who are sensitive to sound. Against the pleading of her brother to wait until he tells their mother the plan she leaves the next morning on her own. The mother begs and pleads with Emmett to go after her and bring her home. He reluctantly agrees. He rescues her from an alien at a train station and she convinces him of her plan to do something to help people. Again he reluctantly agrees and leads her to a boat. The film splits times perfectly between the characters all dealing with tense situations. An empty oxygen tank becomes a very tense plot device. A baby and kid being locked in a furnace with limited oxygen also intensifies this plot device. The film utilizes sound to its maximum benefit, and the use of sign language is a very important part of the dialogue as well with a key earlier moment coming at another pivotal moment in the film. They make it to the island and also an alien makes it there as well. Great sequences and jump scares are aplenty. The film doesn't let up from the tense atmosphere. When the climax comes it is powerful and executed
solidly. There is just one minor detail that could have elevated the emotional impact of this film. In the first film it played upon themes of family and a father's love for his children, especially his daughter. In this film, Emmett should have been introduced as Lee's younger brother. At the ballgame they could've established this and how Emmett was not like his brother. This then elevates the rest of the dialogue between the characters and him. It also gives him emotional motivation to go after the daughter and to help the family because they are his family. This is the missing piece this film needed to connect it all together. So when Evelyn asks you knew it was him it matters more. When the daughter says 'you're nothing like him” it hits harder. When he tells her later she is like her father, his brother, it would mean so much more. Again connection with family would be the only missing piece this film needed to be just that much better. I think any future films in this franchise would need to shift focus on other characters, locations, and time frames. The possibilities are endless. Especially when considering other possible ways to kill the aliens, or would the aliens possibly adapt. Again lots of possibilities to take future films and explore this world. The new Mercedes-AMG SL: The new edition of an icon
The new Mercedes-AMG SL, the new edition of an icon, returns to its roots with a classic soft top and sporty character. At the same time, the luxurious roadster as a 2+2 seater is particularly suitable for everyday use and puts its power down on the road with all-wheel drive for the first time. High-tech components such as the AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension with active anti-roll stabilisation, rear-axle steering, the optionally available AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system and the standard-fit DIGITAL LIGHT with projection function sharpen the sporty profile. In combination with the AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine, this results in a driving experience of the highest order. As a consistent Performance Luxury model, Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach has developed the SL completely independently. Two models with AMG V8 engines will kick off the market launch. Almost 70 years ago, a sports car launched in Stuttgart immediately became a legend. The vision of expanding the potential of the Mercedes-Benz brand through motor racing successes produced the first SL as a result - a roadgoing racing sports car. Shortly after its début in 1952, the 300 SL (internal designation W 194) reaped success after success on the race tracks of the world. In its first year, it achieved, among other things, a spectacular one-two victory in the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans and even took the first four places in the Nürburgring Grand Jubilee Prize for sports cars. Its successes quickly make the SL a legend. The successful racing car was followed in 1954 by the 300 SL production sports car (W 198), which is called the "Gullwing" because of its unusual doors. In 1999, a jury of motoring journalists voted it the "Sports Car of the Century". Other highlights of the model history include the "Pagoda" (W 113, 1963-1971), the evergreen R 107 (1971-1989), which was built for 18 years, and its successor, the R 129, which is considered an automotive sculpture because of its striking wedge shape. The abbreviation "SL" to this day thus stands for one of the few genuine automotive icons in the world. In the decades-long development history from full-blooded racing car to opentop luxury sports car, the new Mercedes-AMG SL now sets another milestone. It combines the sportiness of the original SL with the unique luxury and technological excellence that characterise modern Mercedes models. "The SL is an icon: For almost 70 years, the distinctive sports car has delighted Mercedes customers of every generation around the world. With the rebirth of the roadster from Mercedes-AMG, the new SL more than ever remains the symbol of this timeless fascination", says Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing and Sales. 62
