Editorial Things are quickly starting to liven up round here, which is not surprising really as April is traditionally the month when many owners awaken their classics from their winter slumber. This particularly applies to those owners who still have to pay for their ‘road fund licence’, as they often just tax the vehicle for six months of the year (April to September) to help keep the costs down.

If you are one of those owners who haven’t driven their car for nearly six months, then make sure you carry out the necessary checks before taking the car out on the road. For example, it is quite common for the rubber seals inside brake and clutch hydraulic cylinders to bond themselves to the walls of the cylinder, so that when the pedal is depressed for the first time, the seal becomes damaged and fluid starts to leak out. It also weakens the seal, and worst case scenario is the brakes fail just when you need them most. Consequently, take a little time to inspect the hydraulics and if in doubt, strip down and replace the seals.

For some reason light bulbs also seem to suddenly fail if they haven’t been used for a while, so it’s worth getting a few spares to carry with you in the glovebox just in case.

Of course, a few niggles are only to be expected if your car has been laid up for a while, but that’s just part of the charm of owning a classic car, right? The sheer simplicity of most of these vehicles means that if they do go wrong, it is usually within the scope of the owner to fix them. All it takes is a basic toolkit and a little time and even the most inexperienced owner will be surprised what can be accomplished. Anyway, the point is, that if you are bringing your car out of winter storage, make sure it gets a thorough check over before you drive it.

TV Cars Under The Hammer

Records Set At Coys Spring Classics London Sale

Auctioneers Coys broke three world records at their famous Spring Classics auction in London on March 11, which was part of a unique television event with Channel 4. A 1972 Maserati Ghibli SS fetched £177,640, which is believed to be a world record price for this model and the first of the three records broken by Coys. The other two cars reaching exceptional prices were a 1981 Delorean DMC-12 and a 1950 Series 1 Land Rover 80”, both part of the new Channel 4 series ‘Cars’ (working title) with star Philip Glenister and restorer Ant Anstead - prices for these cars will be revealed later this summer when the show goes on air.

Chris Routledge, Managing Partner at Coys, said: “It was an exceptional event, a buzzing evening with celebrities and a great crowd. The six Channel 4 cars sold really well, including two world records, but you will have to watch it on TV this summer to know how much they went for!”

He added: “It was the first time for an auction company in Europe to do something like this. The experience was excellent, clients really enjoyed it and we were delighted to be associated with the production, which gave collectors the opportunity to purchase genuine celebrity television-featured cars that have been restored effectively regardless of cost.”

Other important cars that went under the hammer included the former manager of The Beatles Brian Epstein’s 1964 Bentley S3, which sold for £31,000, a 1964 Aston Martin DB5 that sold for £360,000 and a 1926 Rolls Royce 20HP Barrel sided Tourer that sold for £103,720. www.coys.co.uk

Bristol Classic Car Show to showcase the best of motoring history The longest-running, independent classic car show in the UK will take place at the Bath & West Show Ground, Shepton Mallet over the weekend of 14-15 June 2014. Around 14,000 people are expected to experience the 35th Footman James Bristol Classic Car Show, which will feature around 200 classics from 65 car clubs, along with 200 traders, an autojumble and classic auction.

Large club displays are the order of the show, with the Early MG Club bringing seven cars; the Aston Martin Owners Club with 10 models; and up to 12 cars from the Joint Rover Clubs as part of their 110th anniversary of Rover.

The show will be very much a celebration, with many other clubs reaching landmark anniversaries. The MK15 Cortina Owners Club will celebrate their 25th anniversary; The Post Vintage Humber Car Club will have eight cars on its 40th birthday display; and The Daimler & Lanchester Owners Club will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a cross-section of cars. Veterans Prepare For London to Brighton Run Entries have now started rolling in for the world’s oldest motoring event – the annual Veteran Car Run between London and Brighton. Due to take place, as ever, on the first Sunday in November, participants in this year’s Run will leave Hyde Park and pass under Wellington Arch before driving past Buckingham Palace and down The Mall through St James’s Park at the start of the 60 mile trip to Brighton. It’s an iconic route made famous by the Royal Family’s televised coach parades and this year is the first time in recent history it has been part of the Veteran Car Run. Organised by the Royal Automobile Club, the 2014 Bonhams Veteran Car Run takes place on Sunday November 2, and will attract as many as 500 automobiles from the dawn of motoring as well as hundreds of thousands of spectators en route. Open to all cars manufactured before 1905 – making the youngest 109 years old – the event is a moving history show, with pioneering motoring names such as Mors, Panhard, Darracq and Daimler to the fore. Participants can look forward to a spectacular interlude as iconic department store Harrods will open a luxury pop-up ‘pit-stop’ for drivers located within dealership. The prestigious store will be offering a taste of its exquisite Food Halls with much-needed hot drinks and pastries provided in a relaxed and comfortable environment. Harrods is poised to join in this year’s Run for the third time in its history. Unique Aston Martin To Star In Goodwood Sale

A car described as the ‘world’s rarest Aston Martin’ is set to go under the hammer for the first time ever. The unique, 75-year-old Aston Martin Atom is to be a star Lot in Bonhams’ Goodwood Festival of Speed Sale on June 27. The ‘avant-garde,’ lightweight and highly original aerodynamic Coupe concept car has been both renowned and revered for decades by Aston Martin collectors and the wider world of confirmed classic car enthusiasts. But while it is less well-known to the public at large, this 19391940 one-off prototype from the legendary British marque is in fact a hugely significant and influential landmark within motoring history. Bonham’s Group Motoring Director James Knight describes the Atom as: “Plainly one of Aston Martin’s absolute landmark designs, and certainly one of the most exciting one-off British cars we have ever been asked to offer. It is unique, it is super sophisticated, and when one considers it within the context of 1939-40 it represents a monumental achievement. That the Atom has survived in almost constant use, and is today so beautifully conserved in highly original order, is a great tribute to the enthusiasm and taste of the Aston Martin connoisseurs who have fostered it for so many years.

“Placing a value on such an important and unique motor car is nigh on impossible but it has all the right credentials: a well respected and international marque; concours condition; originality, provenance, useability, rarity and of course its historical significance. Rare Rally Veteran

Rare Ex-Works Sunbeam Tiger To Star At Brightwells Auction An ex-Works Sunbeam Tiger will go ‘under the hammer’ at the Brightwells sale in Leominster on May 14. The car is one of just seven works prepared examples and is expected to sell for around the £100,000 mark. Built in 1964, the car is fitted with a Ford 4.2-litre V8 engine and is said to be the most campaigned of all seven works Tigers. Its debut competitive event was the 1964 Geneva Rally where it won its class with ‘Tiny’ Lewis and Barry Hughes at the controls. The following year the Tiger took on the Monte Carlo Rally in the hands of Maurice Gatsonides. The car wasn’t so lucky on this occasion as it failed to finish after becoming trapped in a snow drift in the mountains. As 2014 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Tiger, interest in the model has never been higher and prices of even standard road-going cars have risen markedly of late, especially in America where a fully restored MkI was sold

by RM Auctions for £58,000 in August last year despite having no competition history. www.brightwells.com

‘Sheep Farm Hack’ To Star In Bonhams Mercedes Sale A rare 1909 Mercedes 35hp that was found languishing in the Australian Outback is set to go under the hammer at Bonhams’ single-marque sale at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart on July 12, with an estimated selling price of around €680,000.

The car was initially used from 1914 as the daily runaround of a sheep station manager in Isis Downs, Queensland. It is believed that this particular car was chosen because it could stand up to the heavy demands of working in the Outback in hostile conditions, and the first owner used it for more than 20 years.

By the 1930s the car found a new home with a neighbour who planned to restore it, but another three decades would pass before the work actually started. Around 40 cars are expected to be offered during the sale at the Mercedes-Benz Museum, and visitors to the auction will also be able to view the 1,500 exhibits and 160 vehicles which are on display in the museum. www.bonhams.com

Fairfield Motorsport partners with Severn Valley Stages Fairfield Motorsport will support the 2014 Severn Valley Stages (Saturday May 31) by providing a special award for the best performance for a crew travelling across the Irish Sea to get to the event. The organisers of the Severn Valley Stages have thrown out an invitation to crews from Ireland and the Isle of Man to come and sample some of the finest gravel stages in the UK. The Fairfield Motorsport Award will be presented to the leading visiting crew. Although the event is still two months away, entries are already coming in for both the modern and historic sections of the rally. The Severn Valley Stages is round four of the West Wales Rally Spares R.A.C. Rally Championship, round five of the Brian Dennis Motorsport Welsh Historic Rally Championship and round five of the Pirelli MSA Welsh Stage Rally Championship.

The Severn Valley Stages Rally is a competitor-focused event offering 44 stage miles for £475. The route will take in special stages in Cefn, Crychan and Halfway forests, and both Cefn and Halfway will not have been used for 10 months by the time of the 31 May rally. Audi R18 e-Tron Quattro Cockpit Revised For 2014 Audi has developed a new concept for the R18 e-tron quattro’s ergonomics for the 2014 season.

The configuration of the elements in the cockpit is even more logical now, their functions have been rethought, and the seating position has been improved. This makes it easier for the Audi drivers in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) to operate the controls of the hybrid sports car.

The range of tasks is growing: The Audi drivers not only have to pay the same attention to safety, speed and precision on track as before, but now have to get an exact handle on efficiency as well. The maximum consumption per lap specified by the regulations requires utmost discipline to avoid penalties. To make optimal concentration easier, the drivers’ work in the cockpit should involve as little effort as possible.

“Long before the 2014 season, we took an in-depth look at how we could support our drivers even better,” says Dr. Martin Mühlmeier, Head of Technology at Audi Sport. “The result is a cockpit in which we practically changed everything - from the pedals through to the functions on the steering wheel and on the dashboard. Additionally, the seating position has been changed according to the regulations.”

The regulations for 2014 also prescribe a change in cockpit dimensions and a different seating position which significantly benefits the driver. While he used to lie relatively flat in the monocoque before, his upper body is now in a more upright position. “This enlarges the forward angle of vision,” says a pleased Lucas di Grassi. “And vision through the side windows has notably improved as well. Bentley GT3 Driver Line-Up Revealed

Team M-Sport Bentley announces its driver line up for the 2014 motorsport season with a vastly experienced international team. Six Bentley Boys will drive two Continental GT3 race cars, starting with the five races of the 2014 Blancpain Endurance Series, looking to put Bentley back on the top step of the podium.

The first car sees the continuation of the all-British driver line-up that powered the Continental GT3 to a stunning fourth-placed debut at the Gulf 12 Hours in Abu Dhabi last December. Long-standing Bentley Boy and Le Mans 24-Hours winner Guy Smith will drive with experienced GT3 racers Steven Kane and Andy Meyrick. Balancing a range of different experience between them, Smith, Kane and Meyrick have shown a great working relationship, second only to an impressive turn of speed.

The second Continental GT3 will be piloted by a European driving team. Englishman Duncan Tappy will be partnered with Frenchman Antoine Leclerc and Belgian former F1 racer Jérôme D’Ambrosio, who makes his GT3 debut after several successful years of open-wheel racing.

Donington Historic Festival Timetable Revealed The timetable for this year’s Donington Historic Festival has now been finalised and it promises a hugely enjoyable selection of highly competitive world-class historic motorsport.

The event is held on May 3-5, and will feature a wide diversity of grids and attractions. For example, the Saturday includes not one but two Touring Car races, covering four decades of this ever-popular genre, with Motor Racing Legends’ Historic Touring Car Challenge for 1966-85 Touring Cars kicking off the weekend’s race action, and the HRDC ‘Celebration of the BTCC’ for Touring Cars 1958-1965 providing the finale for that day. Historic Formula 3 and the Historic Touring Car Challenge open the race action on the Sunday morning, with each series having its second race of the weekend. They are followed by a superb variety of grids, including the D-types and C-types, Aston Martins and Austin-Healeys of the Royal Automobile Club Woodcote Trophy pre-56 sportscars and the pre-66 under two-litre Touring Cars of U2TC. Sunday also sees the first parts of the Festival’s two feature races – the Motor Sport 90th Anniversary Trophy for pre-War Sports Cars, likely to feature such legendary marques as Bentley, Bugatti, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Frazer Nash, BMW, Vauxhall, Riley, MG and Talbot, and the Maserati Centenary Trophy, showcasing cars from the 1930s to the 1960s powered by engines built by Maserati or OSCA. The day ends with the FIA Masters Historic Sports Car Championship for Le Mans-style sports cars and ‘Group 4’ cars from 1962 to 1974.

The Bank Holiday Monday features yet another magnificent array of historic racing cars of all ages, shapes and sizes. The competitors in the Motor Sport 90th Anniversary and Maserati Centenary Trophies will be out in the second parts of their respective races, while the Mustangs, Lotus Cortinas and Ford Falcons of the Masters Pre-66 Touring Cars will also be put through their paces. The Stirling Moss Trophy for pre-1961 sportscars is always competitive, while the Festival ends in high style, with a 90-minute Masters Gentlemen Drivers pre66 GT race. www.doningtonhistoric.com

MG Car Club

MG90 Exhibition Opens in Abingdon A special MG90 themed exhibition was opened for the first time on the top floor of the Abingdon County Hall Museum on Sunday March 23. The exhibition has been created in collaboration with the MG Car Club to celebrate 90 years of MG motoring. Historical MG artefacts have been loaned to the museum from the club to create the special exhibition, which is open to the public until July 20th.

Among the MG90 exhibits are a selection of items which belonged to Cecil Kimber, considered by many as the father of MG, such as Kimber’s overnight bag, ornaments from his desk and fur coat. There is also a selection of original prototype models of some of the most well-known MGs, which were created by hand in the Abingdon factory.

As well as the mayor of Abingdon, Cllr Samantha Bowring, the opening was attended by a number of famous faces from the former Abingdon factory including Don Hayter, Chief Designer of the MGB; Peter Browning, BMC Competitions Manager, and Jimmy Cox and Brian Moylan who both worked on the various record breakers and Works competition cars.

Julian White, General Manager of the MG Car Club said: “This is the first time I’ve seen the completed exhibition and it looks absolutely fantastic! Jane Bowen and her staff at the museum have done such a great job at bringing the history of MG to life.

“I must also thank the MG Car Club’s archive team of Peter Neal and Phil Grinham along with Colin Grant for all their hard work in sourcing and gathering these artefacts together. It is so heartening to see so many people here today to celebrate the car we all love.” www.mgcc.co.uk

Big Cats Get Ready To Roam In Cheshire Countryside!

Members of the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club will be taking part in the Cheshire Cats XK Forum Run on Sunday, April 27. The run is designed to be ‘An enjoyable and relaxing drive through the beautiful Cheshire countryside, covering around 70 miles with splendid views, excellent undulating roads and the pleasant company of other XK enthusiasts.’ Participants can look forward to a fully detailed route guide, along with a mid-way coffee stop and a relaxing lunch at a local restaurant with good parking facilities. The organisers say that there will be lots of opportunities for photoshoots and chances to stop off and take in the scenery.

The run sets of at 9.30am from Newcastle-Under-Lyme in Staffordshire, and with the early(ish) start in mind the club has provided details of some nearby suitable hotels to make sure things get off to a relaxed start.

Hurricane force Back in 1969, Australian car maker Holden built a futuristic research vehicle described as an experiment “to study design trend, propulsion systems and other longrange developments.” It has now been restored to its former glory as a labour of love by a dedicated group of Holden designers and engineers. Here is their story.

rear-vision camera and an automated route finder were all showcased in this groundbreaking vehicle over 40 years ago. In fact, many of these technologies have only recently made their way into mass production, which The Hurricane being worked on in the Holden workshops.

Jaw Dropping!

The Hurricane caused quite a stir when if was first revealed,

stealing the headlines and causing jaws to drop right across its native Australia when it debuted at the 1969 Melbourne Motor Show.

As its code name suggests, the RD 001 was the first product of the GMH Research and Development organization, staffed by a small squad of engineers working in conjunction with the Advance Styling Group at the Fishermans Bend Technical Centre in the 1960s.

The team that designed and built the original Hurricane employed some advanced technologies and techniques when it came to the powertrain. Powered by an experimental 4.2-litre (253cu/ in) V8, this engine was a precursor to the Holden V8 engine program which entered production in late 1969.

The Hurricane’s V8 engine featured many advanced design components such as the four-barrel carburettor – a feature which wouldn’t be seen on a production 253ci Holden V8 until the late 1970s.

The end result produced approximately 262hp (193kW), a towering power output in 1969 and one that ensured the Hurricane had the performance to match its looks.

Pathfinder System

Perhaps the most innovative features were the ‘Pathfinder’ Working on the Hurricane’s 4.2 litre engine.

embedded at intersections along the road network to guide the driver along the desired route. A dash-mounted panel informed the driver of which turn to take by illuminating different arrows, as well as sounding a warning buzzer.

The rear view camera was also a ground-breaking innovation.

components, systems and history. “There are some genuinely remarkable ideas and technology in the Hurricane,” Martin said. “From the automatic air-conditioning and magnet-based guidance system, to the inertia-reel seat belts and metallic paint, this was a car that was genuinely ahead of its time.

“The hand-picked team of engineers and designers who built the original Hurricane worked in strict secrecy and began Holden’s now proud tradition of ground-breaking concept cars.”

Innovation

RD 001 stands just 990mm high and has no conventional doors. A hydraulically powered canopy opens upwards and forward over the front wheels, combined with twin ‘astronaut type’ powerelevating seats which rise up 24 www.cprmag.co.uk

and pivot forward, along with the steering column for ease of access. Occupants are then lowered to a semi-reclining position before the roof closes over them.

The wind tunnel-tested fibreglass body consists of three segments; the canopy, the engine hood and body shell and was finished in an experimental aluminium flakebased metallic orange paint.

Safety innovations included an aircraft-style foam-lined fuel tank, integrated roll-over bar, digital instrument readouts, ignition safety locks, interior padding and a fire warning system.

.holden...holden... completed in 2011, and has been described as a genuine labour of love for some very dedicated Holden designers and engineers who volunteered thousands of hours of their time. Paul Clarke, Holden’s manager for Creative Hard Modelling, was largely

responsible for managing the restoration. He ensured as many of the original parts as possible were used or remade using modern techniques to 1969 specification.

“The entire team did a fantastic job in bringing this beautiful concept back

to life,” Clarke said. “The Hurricane plays a crucial role in Holden’s story and the company has such a great sense of history and heritage that it was very important to bring RD 001 back to life. It’s been a challenging but incredibly rewarding process.”

Just what exactly makes the MGB such a universally popular classic car? Phil Sullivan asks the question, and drives one to find out.

he MGB must surely be one of the most written about cars in history.

Hardly surprising since over half a million of them were built between 1962 and 1981, so you could say they were

fairly popular! Of course, that creates all sorts of problems for a humble motoring scribe such as myself, who likes to wow the reader with lots of exciting and original text. It has all been written before!

Perhaps the one thing that has always puzzled me about the MGB is just why it is so popular. What did it have that made it the biggest selling British sports car of all time?

If you analyze it, the MGB is

actually pretty average. Take its overall appearance for example. It doesn’t have the curves of cars like Jaguar’s E-Type, or the Austin Healey 3000. Its side profile is uninspiring, almost ‘cigar’ like

just well. What’s more, it was affordable and reliable, and if you wanted an open-top two-seater sports car, the MGB gave you everything you needed at a very good price. A ‘people’s sportscar’ if you like.

It was also one of the most successful exports in British automotive history. Of the 513,276 MGB models produced, approximately nine out of every ten cars to roll off the production line were destined to leave the country, most heading to the USA.

The ‘cigar’ shaped body lacks curves, but is still attractive.

This is a car that has a solid rear axle, leaf-springs and lever arm dampers all-round.

These parts do their job to the best of their ability, but don’t exactly offer an exciting or rewarding drive. They keep the car on the road and absorb the bumps, but that’s it.

Doing It Well

So what is the attraction?

What made this car outsell all its rivals? The answer is simple. It did everything well.

Not brilliantly, or amazingly...

On The Road So what is the MGB like to drive? Well the first thing you notice is that unlike some sportscars it is easy to get in and out of. The seating position is comfortable and all the controls are within easy reach. The view through the windscreen is good, although if you are used to modern

saloon cars it will feel a bit like peering through a letterbox!

With the engine fired up you can select first gear and get going. The gearbox, like many older cars, feels very mechanical and quite stiff. The stick doesn’t move very much and new MGB drivers will take some time to adjust to it.

Likewise, the pedals feel quite stiff and you have to be firm with them, but a hearty squeeze on the throttle soon has the ‘B’ Series engine revving freely and raring to go.

Out on the road the MGB feels surprisingly tight. Its monocoque construction means there is less twisting of the body compared to cars with a separate chassis, and that generally means less rattles and squeaks.

It pulls along at a decent pace, but as mentioned earlier, the MGB is no racing car, at least not in stock configuration. If

you are heavy on the throttle you can change up through the gears at a rapid rate, and although the MGB only has a four-speed box, it does also benefit from ‘overdrive’ on third and fourth gears, effectively giving it six gear ratios. The ride is firm but not unduly harsh, and you certainly feel the bumps and potholes as you go over them.

The original large steering wheel on our test car has

been replaced by a smaller 14” Motolita item that is more comfortable to use, but means steering is slightly heavier at low speeds. In fact, for a small car, the steering is surprisingly heavy, but that is why the MG Owners’ Club developed and sells a power-steering kit for the MGB.

bit shopping around, a good chrome bumper car can be picked up for less than £4,000.00. Later rubber bumper cars can be had for even less. Restoration projects with rotten shells can be bought for under £500.00, but when you factor in the price of a replacement shell or the numerous body panels 34 www.cprmag.co.uk

it will require, it makes more sense to buy a car where the work has already been done.

Replacement parts are inexpensive when compared to modern cars and nearly everything you need is available off the shelf from a large network of specialists.

For example, a brake master cylinder (single circuit) will

cost around £65.00; a 3-piece clutch kit (OE Spec) will be about £85.00 and an outer sill will cost you just over £60.00.

There are a few things to look for if you are buying an MGB. A lot of the cars out there look great at first glance, with shiny chrome and polished paintwork. However, jack the car up and look underneath

and you could find corrosion which would be costly and time consuming to fix. A common rust point is the sill sections which run under each door. These are structural and consist of an outer sill, inner sill and castle rail and can suffer badly from rot. You need to know what you are doing if you want to replace

them yourself. Get it wrong and the shell will sag and the doors wont shut properly.

The best option is to have them replaced professionally, although that could land you with a bill for around ÂŁ2,000.00 if both sides need doing, assuming you want them painting as well.

While we are under the car,

I should also mention that careful attention needs to be paid to the rear spring hangers. These form the rear part of the chassis, and if they rot, they will need cutting out and replacing. Again, this isn’t a job for an amateur or the faint-hearted, because if you get the hanger even slightly out of alignment, it will have a April 2014 35

will need replacing. That isn’t a straightforward job either, as the bushes have to be pressed in and then reamed to fit. The easier option is to buy a reconditioned stub-axle assembly with the king-pin already fitted.

you to ditch the prehistoric lever arms and upgrade to fully adjustable telescopic dampers. These transform the handling qualities, although they can make the ride quite hard if not set up correctly.

The faithful old BMC B-Series engine is usually reliable and lends itself well to upgrading and performance mods.

Popular add-ons include adding a Stage 2 cylinder head and Weber carb kit with K&N air filters, although the simplest and probably most effective performance mod is a good stainless steel exhaust system with a tubular manifold.

Get the gas flowing freely and the horsepower will increase at a surprising rate.

Gearboxes don’t usually cause too many issues, but if you are looking at a car with an overdrive fitted, check it is working before you buy. Overdrives are fiddly to repair at home, and even reconditioned items can work out expensive.

Down at the rear end, the MGB was fitted with two different types of axle. The

really early cars were fitted with the ‘Banjo’ type axle which featured a removable differential, where as the later cars used the Salisbury, or ‘Tube’ type axle with a built-in diff. It should also be noted that the axles were different lengths depending on whether the car had wire-wheels or steel-wheels.

Overall, the MGB represents

an ideal first classic car to cut your teeth on. Buy one with a solid, rot-free body, a good engine and gearbox, and you will have a great platform to which you can add whatever modifications take your fancy.

There is excellent club support too, with the two main clubs being the MG Owners’ Club and the MG Car Club. Each organisation can help with

technical advice, spare parts and can offer an excellent social scene with regional meetings all over the UK. If you are contemplating buying your first classic, and you’re not sure what to buy, you could do a lot worse than an MGB. As an introduction to the scene, it really is about as good as it gets.

Silverstone Thriller Kicks Off MGCC Series

The first round of the long-awaited MGCC 2014 Race Series got underway at Silverstone on March 29. Leanne Fahy was there to catch the action.

aturday March 29, saw a thrilling start to the MG Car Club race season. A total of six different race series’ and championships set up camp in the paddock 42 www.cprmag.co.uk

at Silverstone, ready to battle it out over nine tightly contested races.

Getting the new season off to a flying start, the first cars out on track were those taking part in the

Drayton Manor Park MG Metro Cup. New to racing, and indeed the MG Metro Cup, novice racer Ben Rushworth led the way in his Rover Metro with a pole position start. As the

first five red lights of the new season diminished, a strong launch from Rushworth saw him leap ahead initially, until Tom Sanderson wiggled his way past in his Metro GTi. After losing the lead to

Sanderson, Rushworth found himself immersed in battle, as Mike Williams and Jack Ashton muscled their way past. After a gripping squabble for a number of laps, Rushworth was sadly thwarted by

mechanical difficulties, when he was forced to pull over in a plume of smoke.

make his way into the lead, Williams trailed Sanderson to the chequered flag, with the pair some 28 seconds ahead of third place.

Peter Best Insurance MG Cup Races Andrew Young in his MGCGT was a force to be reckoned with in the first Peter Best Insurance MG Cup race. After stealing pole position, he immediately dived into the lead, to keep the chasing Robert Campbell, also in

an MGCGT, at bay for the full 20 minutes.

With the top two positions decided early on, there was everything to play for further back. Paul Eales (MGBGT) and Alan Brooke (Rover Metro GTi) wrestled furiously over third place, as reigning champion James Walpole followed in his MGB Roadster. With the trio engulfed in their own scrap, Tom Diment managed to weave his way up to third place in the MGZR 190. Both keen A varied mix of cars took part in the Cockshoot Cup race.

to score class victory, the battle between Eales and Walpole certainly ignited.

As Eales had the upper hand, a sudden spin saw him pirouette from fourth to sixth place, as Walpole and Brooke romped ahead.

A man on a mission, Eales was soon back on the tail of his chief rivals, once again keen to displace Brooke and Walpole. A series of speedy laps gave Eales the edge he needed, when he found himself displacing Brooke and closing in on Walpole once more. A brave move around the outside of Copse onto the final lap saw Eales sneak ahead. As the pair weaved around the final tour, Walpole immediately fought back, but it was Eales who held the advantage across the finish line. Young completed the perfect

weekend with yet another victory in race two, again ahead of Campbell. Brooke looked set to score a third place finish, however as Diment caught up in the latter stages his race became unsettled.

After a spot of wheel to wheel action, Diment managed to sneak ahead of Brooke, with the latter picking up fourth place.

Further back, a fierce race long tussle between Eales, Clive Jones and Walpole saw Eales land ahead of Jones as they reached the chequered flag.

Jake Fraser-Burns and Richard Buckley, both driving MGZR 190s, provided thrilling entertainment for the first MG Trophy outing of the season, albeit in nonchampionship capacity, with the pair finishing side by side, just 0.006

seconds apart. A good getaway for Fraser-Burns from pole position gave him the ideal advantage, however it was Buckley who had the edge as the pair toured their opening lap. From here, both Buckley and Fraser-Burns battled furiously.

As we settled into the middle phase of the race, Fraser-Burns saw his opportunity to sneak ahead, however it was short lived, when Buckley soon regained control. It was far from over between

the top two, when the final lap introduced us to a whole new level of excitement. With the chequered flag readied, Buckley and Fraser-Burns toured side by side, each trying to edge ahead. As the flag came into the sight it was a drag race to the end, with Fraser-Burns’ MGZR ahead by just 0.006 seconds to give him his first race win.

The packed grids at Silverstone gave some exciting racing! from Toby Sowery and Julia Penfold. A strong performance saw Penfold pile the pressure onto Marsh’s similar MGZR 170, however when a late race spin caught her off guard, Marsh was able to run away, taking the chasing Sowery with him. immense pressure from Sowery in the final stages, Marsh held on for third place, ahead of Sowery and Penfold. David Candy, Christopher Boulton and Ian Boulton completed the order.

Fraser-Burns made it two out of two, when the

chasing Buckley suddenly slowed before retiring in race two. With more than 30 seconds protecting his lead, the final seven minutes appeared very lonely, until a dramatically slowing Fraser-Burns found himself fighting for the lead.

In the absence of Buckley, Marsh was promoted to second, bringing Sowery and Christopher Boulton with him. As the trio battled furiously, FraserBurns began to lose time, to drop into their clutches.

As the final lap came to a close Fraser-Burns managed to hold on, just three seconds ahead as he swept past the chequered flag. Marsh secured Class

Cockshoot Cup In only his second ever race, Jason Simm tasted victory in the sole Cockshoot Cup race.

Courtesy of a good start in his MGZS from pole position, both he and David Coulthard (no...not that David Coulthard!) rocketed towards Copse corner. Initially, it was Coulthard, in his new MGF Cup car, who stole the lead, however Simm managed to retake the lead, a position he never relinquished.

With the top spot set in stone, the battle for second was certainly an attention grabber. Brian Lambert in the MGB, and Robi Bernberg in his TVR Grantura, were the gentlemen wrestling for position, with Lambert leading the way during the first half of the race.

MOTOR SHOW The 84th Geneva International Motor Show attracted over 77,000 visitors to see some of the very latest offerings from the automotive world. David Harrison reports.

T

his year’s Geneva International Motor Show, which was held at the Palexpo Arena on March 6-16, showcased a stunning mix of cars old and new, and with one of the main exhibitions of the show tracing the history of the Le Mans 24 Hour Race, it was a real treat for motorsport fans too.

The Geneva show usually facilitates the unveiling of many new cars, among which are several high performance machines from the likes of Ferrari and Lamborghini. In fact, in recent years Geneva seems to have become the unofficial ‘battleground’ where the two Italian ‘Goliaths’ of the supercar world April 2014

lock horns and try to outdo each other with their latest release. And yes, things were pretty much the same this year too.

Hurricane Force!

Lamborghini recently ended the remarkable 10-year production run of its iconic Gallardo, and the Geneva show would see the unveiling of its much anticipated replacement, the LP610-4 Huracán.

It looks every inch a typical Lamborghini, with aggressive styling and outlandish looks all formed from a new type of hybrid carbon fibre and aluminium construction.

It is a process that has been used on several new Audis and offers great strength combined yet remains very light in weight.

Many of the new car’s features are designed to bring what will be Lamborghini’s new flagship model into line with its

competitors. Cars like Ferrari’s 458 Italia and the McLaren MP412C outperformed the outgoing Gallardo so it’s no surprise that the Huracán is faster and more powerful.

It is powered by a new, naturally aspirated 602bhp 5.2-litre V10 engine that drives all four wheels through a new design of seven-speed dualclutch gearbox.

The manufacturer says that it will run 0-62mph in 3.2sec

and will hit 124mph in 9.9sec.

Its top speed is claimed to be “over 200mph”.

Lamborghini was also keen to push the economic virtues of the new car, not something you usually associate with a supercar, but apparently the Huracán will return a reasonable 22.6mpg, compared to the Gallardo’s 19.2mpg, while CO2 emissions are down from 351g/ km to 290g/km.

Over on the Ferrari stand, most of the attention was going to the Ferrari California T which is the marque’s first turbocharged production vehicle since the 1987 F40. It is powered by a low-mounted, direct-injection 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine which produces 552bhp at 7,500rpm and 557lb ft of torque.

It is a very attractive cars, and quick too. According to Ferrari it will cover 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds and has a top speed of 196mph. Both figures represent a slight improvement on the previous California model which the new car replaces. It has 70hp more than the outgoing car too, yet fuel consumption is better by some 15% at 27mpg.

An upgraded crankshaft and exhaust manifold have been used which Ferrari says makes the car sound “even more potent” than the older car, so it should sound like a ‘proper’ supercar too.

Legends of Le Mans As much as I love the hightech, super-fast cars of the performance world, it wasn’t long before I was drifting off towards Hall 3 to find the Le Mans display. It didn’t take much finding to be fair; covering 1,800m2 the area it occupied was huge. It featured 20 cars in all, with the earliest dating back to 1923 and the most recent was the winning Audi R18 e-Tron Quattro from last year.

The oldest car in the line-up was the winning car from the first ever Le Mans 24 Hour Race, the Chenard & Walcker Sport driven by André Lagache and René Léonard. The veteran car still looks amazing in its Royal Blue paintwork and it was a treat to see it here at Geneva.

The second oldest car in the display was the legendary Bentley Speed Six which won the 1929 race in the hands of Woolf Barnato and Henry Birkin.

The Lexus RC F GT3 made its debut at Geneva.

The Maserati doesn’t really need any help looking pretty, but gets it anyway!

Again, another rare opportunity to see one of the stars of the Le Mans race ‘in the flesh.’

Among some of the more recent cars was the 1992 race-winning Peugeot 905 which was crewed

by Blundell, Dalmas and Warwick. Then there was the 1966 Ford GT40 MkII driven

by Amon and McLaren which romped home in first place and kick-started yet another automotive legend.

The display was brilliantly arranged, with the deliberate low lighting creating just the right amount of atmosphere while still allowing visitors to see the cars clearly. Images taken throughout the history of Le Mans were shown on screens behind the cars and just added to the overall experience.

this automotive Nirvana, I reluctantly headed back to the main show to check out some more new cars. Being a general motor industry event, the Geneva Motor Show is not just about supercars, but bland, boring everyday ‘shopping cars’ too. They seem to be everywhere, but among the latest hybrids and ‘superminis’ lurk a few more treasures from the performance car world.

Take the new Porsche 911 RSR for example. Okay, it differs somewhat from the Ferrari and Lamborghini offerings as this is a track car, but it is still a notable appearance.

Porsche says that the rear wheel drive 911 RSR features a lightweight design and refined aerodynamics for better lap times and better fuel efficiency.

In its first appearance at the 2013 24 Hours of Le Mans the 911 RSR placed first and second in the GT-Class, and now the car has been further improved for 2014. It started the season

Performance cars don’t have to be wedge-shaped two-seaters you know!

Take the Abarth 595 Competizione for example.

A small hatchback shopping car, it looks quite ordinary, but drives like a rocket! Is it a wolf in sheep’s clothing? Chris McEvoy finds out.

ercedes has AMG, BMW has ‘M’ and Jaguar along with others have R, RS FR, or other Scrabble tile ‘go faster’ combinations. Almost without exception these are all applied to large cars. But when it comes to looking for a fast ‘supermini’ sized car the choice is much reduced.

There’s always the iconic Mini, and in its latest Mini Cooper S guise it’s quick. With a 2-litre turbo engine pushing out a tad under 200bhp, and a 0-62 time of 6.7 seconds going on to a terminal velocity of 145mph is respectable enough. But at 3.85 metres long and weighing in at 1,250Kg it has become a bit, well, ‘porky’. So if you’re wanting something small, 64 www.cprmag.co.uk

Behold the Abarth 595 Competizione. Based on the FIAT 500 it benefits from chassis revisions, an uprated version of the Esseessee motor, complimented with embellishments to the interior and exterior. This results in a 160bhp, 0-62 in 7.4 seconds, max speed 130mph, ‘pocket rocket’, dressed in a sharp Italian suit.

Check out the quadexhaust at the rear! slightly differently. And this Abarth version of the FIAT 500 is no exception. They use Abarth’s specialist engineering skills and experience to breathe a bit more Vivace into the FIAT 500. Already a very big hit with the fashion conscious set, for whom the small, stylish run-about is as much of a necessity for townies from Hoxton to the the Kings Road, as it is for those who run trendy interior design shops in the Cotswolds.

The car, resplendent in it’s unique grey and red livery, sparkled in the morning sunlight, it looked special. And on this car the addition of cross drilled brake discs and bright red Brembo calipers added to the sporty look.

Inside the panache starts well with the excellent Sabelt red leather/Alcantara sports seats.

But it trails off, as much of the rest of the interior, particularly the dashboard is standard 500 and is bettered by rivals.

Getting a good driving position was easy, although the back rest adjuster can only be reached with the door open and the steering wheel would benefit from reach adjustment.

Even though I’m 6ft 2in there was good head room.

With the seat set, it was time to fire up the engine; you need to do this with the window down to get the full start-up rasp and timbre of the exhaust note, and head for the open road. The high mounted gear change falling easy to hand (an auto version is available) the car passed through the slow traffic without drama.

providing a comfortable and well supported position even when driving with enthusiasm.

On the twisting B roads, making full use of the 5-speed gearbox was a pleasure. And this brings me back to that exhaust note. It has that seductive quality that lures you into revving more than you intended to, just for fun.

And this car has loads of fun factor. It’s no coincidence that Abarth started its relationship

with FIAT as a performance exhaust supplier. On the 595 it hits the right note every time. A subtle dolce in town to a full fortissimo with added pops when changing up on full acceleration. Glorious!

In short, it’s acceptable in the city, and sporting but not scandalous in the country.

So who or what is/was Abarth?

Firm Ride

The ride. Well its firm. A short chassis, a narrow track and corners fitted with 17” wheels wrapped in 205/40 Pirelli P-Zeros results in a rather rattling encounter on the worst of pot holed urban streets, but one that levels out appreciably on smooth tarmac. The sabelt seats

The badges show that this is much more than a standard Fiat 500.

The name is taken from Carlo Abarth (1908 - 1979), an Austrian and five time European motorcycle race champion. On moving to Italy he became well known to luminaries in the automotive sporting world such as Anton Piëch, Ferry Porsche and Tazio Nuvolari, and subsequently founded Cisitalia. In 1949 he founded the Abarth Company using his astrological sign of Scorpio as its emblem. As well as producing racing cars they also became a major supplier of high performance exhaust systems. Although the company was sold to FIAT in 1971, production of exhaust under the Abarth name continues to this day.

to hit the road again. This time onto wider A roads and a couple of motorway jaunts.

With ‘Sport’ mode engaged the engine is a bit quicker on throttle response but retains drivability, and adds more weight to the electrically assisted steering. It actively purrs along open expanses of motorways and zips past lumbering trucks with ease. I suspect that that given the opportunity to a blast round a circuit like Silverstone, it would stay on the heels of many more powerful hot-hatch backs.

Angel or Devil?

Overall it’s a car with soul. In town it’s agile and nippy, out on the open road, smooth and

agile. But all with the extra reserve of bhp and torque if needed. It has the looks of an angel but can kick like the devil when needed.

Given it’s dual persona, it was appropriate that I finished the day at the infamous Hell Fire caves in West Wycombe.

It was here during the late 1700’s that the Hell Fire club held its revelries the antics of which were ostensibly ‘proper’ but widely rumoured to be raucous. Members being MP’s, Poets, Doctors, First Lord of the Admiralty and the son of the then Archbishop of Canterbury. Pillars of society and therefore above reproach. Hmm. Dating back to the 1740’s the caves were dug under the auspices of Sir Francis Dashwood, partly as a way of providing employment for the locals in a time of hardship and partly as a way of keeping up with other members of the landed gentry who were building fashionable gotto’s and follies on their estates. The splendid gothic style entrance heightened the level of expectation for visitors entering the complex, many of whom being further entertained in the underground banqueting hall.

RM Auctions broke records and notched up some impressive sales at the world renowned Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance sale on March 8. The respected auction house achieved its best-ever Amelia Island results at its 16th annual sale with a total of $35,947,500 and 97% of all lots sold. This represented a 34% increase over 2013 sale results.

Top sale honours went to ‘Malcolm’s French Mistress,’ the ultra-rare 1937 Delahaye 135 Competition Court Torpedo Roadster offered from a half century of ownership as the jewel of the esteemed Pray Collection.

One of only two surviving short chassis examples and the only surviving example with its Géo Ham body tag, the showstopper achieved a world-record $6,600,000 to become the most valuable car ever sold during the Amelia Island weekend.

Additional top lots among the 16 offered from the Pray Collection include the impeccably pure 1958 BMW 507 Series II Roadster, which garnered a record-shattering $2,420,000, and a superbly authentic 1961

‘Barn Finds’ To Star In Silverstone Auctions’ NEC Restoration Show Sale Silverstone Auctions will be hosting a special sale at the very first Practical Classics Restoration Show, taking place at the NEC, Birmingham, on Saturday April 12, 2014. Reflecting the theme of the brand new show, visitors will have the chance to acquire some exceptional restoration projects and intriguing barn finds, as well as a selection of fine, roadworthy classic road cars and automobilia. “We’re delighted to have been chosen to host a brand new auction at the inaugural NEC Restoration Show”, said Nick Whale, managing director, Silverstone Auctions.

The Drophead coupe, VLP929, is the 74th example of the 622 right hand drive cars built. In the 1980s the car was bought by an Italian collector and exported to Sicily where it was discovered a short while ago alongside a treasure trove of other British sports cars. It was repatriated back to the UK where the enthusiastic vendor had the intention of restoring it to its former glory. With other priorities taking precedence the car is now offered for auction.

The Fixedhead coupe, offered at auction for the first time, arguably has an even more interesting past. Hidden from the world since 1969, the car was

discovered by an enthusiast in 2009, having spent forty years in a barn.

Its first owner was a West Bromwich garage owner and renowned racing driver of the period, Alan Eccles.

Fittingly for a racing driver, the car was specially ordered with an ultra rare close-ratio gearbox. After taking a job abroad in 1969, Eccles stored the car in the barn at his Shropshire home. Thinking this arrangement would only last for a few years, the car was eventually tucked away for the next 40 years, before being sold on.

Both of these exciting project cars requires a full restoration and would provide an excellent base for any enthusiast looking for a fine 1950s British sports car.

In addition, Hill gives us a fascinating insight into the preparations of driver and team as we eavesdrop on a briefing between him and BRM’s Tony Rudd.

Overall this is a very watchable DVD and will make a great addition to any motorsport collection.

At the beginning was the Morris Eight van, which struggled to cope with a five hundredweight load, or to reach 50 mph. At the end came the Ford Transit which carried three times that load, drove like a car and cruised at 70mph.

In this book the van manufacturers (large and small) are dealt with in A-Z order, from Austin, Bedford, Bond and Commer to Reliant, Standard, Triumph and Trojan. The author gives a brief history of each and then provides individual coverage of the models produced, using material from brochures and advertisements for the illustrations to give the flavour of the times when they were seen to be going about their business.

The overall layout of this book works very well, and despite not being a great fan of commercial vehicles, I actually found it to be a fascinating read, and that must surely be credit to the author. It features 192 pages so there is lots to get stuck into, but nostalgia fans will love the reproductions of the period advertising posters which will no doubt bring back fond memories for many readers. An excellent book!
