Editorial Well, it’s been a while, and you might have been wondering where we had got to, and we do of course apologise for our much too lengthy absence, but now we are back! We have been running the magazine pretty much as a non-profit publication, a magazine produced by car enthusiasts for other like-minded people, and from time-to-time ‘real life’ and other commitments get in the way. Such has been the case over the last few months, when I (your illustrious Editor) was made one of those offers you just don’t refuse. Consequently, the time I have had to devote to the magazine has been drastically reduced, and is likely to remain so for the foreseeable future. The upshot of all that is that Classic, Performance & Retro will continue, but most likely the frequency will change from monthly to quarterly(ish!). That could change should any budding journalists or designers like to volunteer to help with the production...(anyone?) For now though, you can enjoy this issue of the magazine which takes a look back at some of the best events of the 2014 season. It’s fair to say there have been more highs than lows during 2014, but with fatalities at the Le Mans 24 Hour and Silverstone Classic, and the tragic accidents that have left F1 drivers Michael Schumacher and Jules Bianchi with life changing injuries, there have been far too many low points this year. As the year draws to a close, our thoughts are with the families of those affected by these terrible accidents; let’s hope 2015 is a much safer year than this one has proved to be. So, sit back, grab a coffee, and check out the latest issue of Classic, Performance & Retro. Oh, and have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year...where ever you may be! Drive safe!

Mini Story On Show

The MINI Story Opens at BMW Museum, Munich

An exhibition which tells the story of the iconic Mini brand from its inception right up to present day has opened at the BMW Museum in Munich. “The MINI Story” is set to run until January 31, 2016, and visitors will get to see over 30 original vehicles, smaller exhibits and accessories from 55 years of MINI history. Numerous photos, films and sketches, along with a wealth of background information, tell the story of the tradition-rich brand across 20 themed areas. “A MINI has an inspiring, engaging way about it. It defies barriers and is ridiculously good-looking at the same time,” said Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG with various responsibilities, including MINI, at the opening of the exhibition. “The bond between a MINI and its driver is above all an emotional one. This wide-reaching exhibition at the BMW Museum and the brochure to accompany it provide an engrossing showcase for the rich heritage of MINI – from the conception of the original Mini in 1959 to the present day. I look forward to welcoming crowds of visitors and MINI fans who share our passion.” Gabriele Fink, Head of the BMW Museum added: “Following the recent guest appearance by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, this special MINI exhibition allows us to give our visitors a closer look at another of the BMW Group’s heritage-rich brands. We’re bringing together the most varied aspects of MINI within a youthful, dynamic and innovative setting.” Once through the doors, an informative and action-packed tour leads visitors from the early days of the space-saving classic models such as the Morris Mini Minor and Mini Traveller to the first new MINI, built in 2001. Alongside the model series on display, concept vehicles and creative one-offs – from a camper van to a stretch limousine complete with whirlpool – demonstrate the astonishing variety of models produced by MINI as well as the customer-centred focus of a brand cherished around the world for its innovative design. The brand’s illustrious heritage and adherence to a ‘British’ attitude to life are present in the pop culture of the 1960s (as epitomised by The Beatles) and beyond. The BMW Museum gives this cultural and historical context a platform through 20 themed areas. These include rare accessories, films and photos, adverts and design sketches along with many other unique artefacts. The interactive joy of today’s world and a study of innovative connectivity-related ideas set the seal on ‘The MINI Story’, a journey back in time through half a century of MINI history. Campbell Bugatti Sale

Malcolm Campbell Bugatti To Star In Paris Sale A Bugatti that once belonged to record-breaker Sir Malcolm Campbell is being offered for sale at next year’s Artcurial Retromobile sale, which is being held in Paris on February 6. The 1928 Type 43 Grand Sport was driven by Campbell in the Essex Six Hours on May 12, 1928, where he managed to hold the lead and fend off the challenging Bentley of Woolf Barnato until a fuel problem forced the car to retire. The Bugatti was also entered in the RAC Tourist Trophy in August 1928 where the car was badly damaged in a serious fire. Given its provenance and the fact that it’s a Bugatti, the car is expected to sell for several million pounds. “Fire Up The Quattro!”

‘Ashes to Ashes’ quattro auctioned for charity The Audi UR quattro that starred in the hit BBC television series Ashes to Ashes alongside actor Phillip Glenister has been sold via an online auction to raise money for the BBC’s Children in Need appeal. Built in 1983, the car has been signed by Glenister and also features his character’s catchphrase “Fire up the quattro!” written in marker pen under the bonnet’ The car had remained in the hands of the BBC since filming ended, and it was given a pre-sale overhaul courtesy of Audi UK. However, this wasn’t a ‘character-robbing’ complete restoration, but a sympathetic revamp that allowed the car to retain what the BBC called “a number of battle scars from the exciting life she has led...” It did however benefit from a full respray just prior to the sale, and from the photos appears to be in great shape. The online auction ended on November 16. It ran for a full ten days, attracted 59 individual bidders who between them placed 160 bid, and the car eventually sold for a healthy £38,598. www.bbc.co.uk/corporate2/childreninneed

Mile Of Cars!

London’s Mile of Eye-Catching Automotive Style

The traffic on Regent Street was at a total standstill on Saturday 1st November, not due to the weight of London traffic for once, but for the annual Regent Street Motor Show. The capital’s world famous West End shopping street was closed for a very special ‘mile of automotive style’ stretching between Piccadilly to Oxford Circuses as the UK’s largest free-to-view motor show showcased a glittering display of more than 200 cars and bikes from past, present and future generations. Last November’s captivating event attracted more than 400,000 visitors and this year’s was every bit as popular with enthusiasts, shoppers, London residents and tourists all relishing a huge variety of eye-catching machinery which embraced everything from motoring’s early pioneers to the latest electric cars. Representing the dawn of motoring, and right at the heart of the display, was a remarkable collection of 100 pre-1905 machines. As a curtain raiser to Sunday’s running of the annual Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, these were partaking in the prestigious EFG International Concours d’Elegance. This year’s star-studded judging panel included multiple-title winning F1 team principal Ross Brawn and TV personality Edd China. The beautifully original 1902 Arrol-Johnston of Alistair Hacking was awarded with the overall prize (photo above). regentstreetmotorshow.com

Electric Debut At Italian Show

Formula E Car to Make Debut at Bologna Show Italian racers Jarno Trulli and Michela Cerruti will drive the fully-electric SparkRenault SRT_01E Formula E car at the Bologna Motor Show. Ex-Formula 1 driver Jarno and Auto GP race-winner Michela both currently compete in the new FIA Formula E Championship as team-mates for Trulli – an outfit owned and managed by the Monaco Grand Prix winner. Jarno will be the first to take to the wheel, performing a series of three live demonstrations during the Show’s opening day (Saturday, December 6) with the 40-year-old also making a guest appearance at the welcome event. Meanwhile, Michela will take to the track on Sunday, December 6, showcasing the car’s performance, which is capable of accelerating from 0-100kph in three seconds. A static version of the Formula E car will also be on display throughout the entire exhibition which is held at the Bologna Expo District (Quartiere Fieristico di Bologna) from December 6 to 14. “Both Michela and I are really looking forward to driving the Formula E car at the Bologna Motor Show and entertaining the crowds,” said Jarno. “Being the car’s Show debut, it will be the first time fans can see what the car can do, as well as listen to its sound. I think a lot of people are going to be really surprised!” Giada Michetti, CEO of Show organisers GL Events, said: “We are very proud to host the Formula E car for the first time at the Bologna Motor Show. We believe Formula E represents a new way to race, more than a huge step for the automotive future. The attendance of Jarno and Michela performing in the Motorsport Arena will be a real added value for our public: they will show us that emotions could run fast and quietly.” For more information on the championship visit www.fiaformulae.com. Winning Ways For Toyota

Toyota Racing Puts on Dominant Display in China With A One/Two Finish

Toyota Racing delivered another perfect result in Shanghai on November 2, with a second successive one-two finish that extends the team’s lead in the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship. Anthony Davidson and Sébastien Buemi followed up their win in Fuji two weeks ago to post their fourth victory of the season in the No8 car, taking their shared lead in the drivers’ title chase to 42 points. The 1,000hp four-wheel drive Toyota TS040 Hybrid was again in a class of its own, with Alex Wurz, Stéphane Sarrazin and Kazuki Nakajima securing second place in the No7 machine. The result gives Toyota a 29-point advantage in the manufacturers’ world championship with two races remaining. The six-hour race proved a trouble-free contest for both cars, with smooth pit stops contributing to the impressive result. By the time Buemi and Davidson made their final driver change, they held a one-lap lead over the entire field, apart from their second-placed team-mates. Davidson and Nakajima were able to bring the cars home for the team’s third one-two finish of the season. Reflecting on the team’s success, Davidson said: “The whole team did a great job with the right strategy and solid pit stops. Everyone kept calm and focused on getting the result. We showed we had the fastest car in Fuji and we’ve done that again here in Shanghai. We didn’t want to take too many risks, particularly in traffic so it was a relatively quiet race for me; Seb did all the spectacular work at the start. To get such a result at this stage of the season is huge for us and now we aim to continue like this in the final two races.” www.toyota.co.uk

MG Car Club Opens ‘MG Garden’ In Abingdon Hard to believe it, but October 12, saw the MG Car Club celebrate its 84th birthday! The club’s first ever meeting was held on October 12, 1930, at the Roebuck Hotel near Stevenage, with over 30 MGs and their owners attending. The club was formed after a letter was written to the popular magazine ‘The Light Car’, questioning: “What about an MG Car Club?” MG owner Roy Marsh attended, as did John Thornley, who was elected Secretary of the new Club that day. A committee was formed and a date in November agreed for the next meeting, at which 50 MGs turned up for a run and the MG Car Club was well and truly under way. By January 1931 John Thornley was happy to report that the Club was nearing nearly 200 members. Today the Car Club has almost 40,000 members worldwide and continues to grow from strength to strength! www.mgcc.co.uk

Mini Cooper Register

Mini Cooper Set Press Car Set For Classic Motor Show The Mini Cooper Register will be displaying an immaculately restored 1959 BMC press fleet Mini at the Classic Motor Show at Birmingham’s NEC on November 14-16, and will also be celebrating the 55th birthday of the iconic Mini marque. Another historic Mini on the Register’s stand is the Ex-Works Mini Cooper 977 ARX belonging to club member Pat Walker. The car made its competition début in November 1962 on the RAC Rally and has spent most of its working life being rallied by a range of different owners. A famous car of a different genre, the Mini Countryman owned by the celebrated coach builder Harold Radford, will be sharing the stand with an equally rare Fiesta yellow Mk1 970cc Cooper S and a Britax liveried Mk2 1275cc Cooper S. From a more recent era there will be a pristine RSP Cooper - 25 next year - which is an important Mini milestone because it marked the renaissance of the Cooper name under Rover’s ownership and ultimately led to BMW acquiring the Mini brand and the creation of the modern MINI range. “The NEC is a favourite event for us because it really caters for classic car clubs like ours and attracts a lot of club members too,” said Robert Young, chairman of the Mini Cooper Register. “We look forward to welcoming members and other Mini fans to our display in hall 17, stand number 500.” www.minicooper.org

Then It Rained! The first downpour of rain occurred just 50 minutes into the race catching competitors off guard after the bright sunny start. The rain and several crashes and early retirements also help bump our position up the leader board. Mike came in after 2 hours and I took over enjoying a lighter fuel load and drying circuit although several accidents meant the safety car was in service a fair amount of the time. I do remember trying to

As one of the slower cars on the grid the passing speeds of the faster cars was immense. I had a terrifying moment when two GT40’s went either side of me at Blanchimont missing the car by inches. to John Todd for the fuel stop and it was only 3 or 4 laps later when our troubles started. The Healey arrived back in the pits steam pouring from the bonnet, quick analysis from the JME Healey mechanics, diagnosed it wasn’t just going to cool with added water, it was a more serious head gasket failure. So whilst we were backing the car into the garage to retire, it was around this time the heavens opened with thunder and lightening arriving to liven up the evening. With the car in the garage retired the team decided there was nothing better to do than to take the head off initially Winter 2014 17

However, speedy chief mechanic Henry feverishly spotted all was well and despite the redhot components, set about changing the head gasket. One hour and 30 mins later, #45 JME Healey had a new head gasket fitted and was rolling down the pit lane looking to rejoin the circuit. John Todd got back into the car, even though our friendly garage neighbours told us not to bother rejoining and that the conditions were treacherous! - The rain had eased off slightly but the safety car was still out for much of the last part of the race preventing us from clawing back our lost positions. The race was finally red flagged at just after 9pm, reports were coming in that accidents were happening even behind the safety car, many cars had just abandoned the race due to the incredible monsoon conditions and it was just as another tranche of rain arrived when the race was finally stopped prematurely. GT40s Rule The Day

It was no surprise that the GT40’s dominated the race from lights to flag but it was the GT40 of Martin Stretton who took the overall honors in the end after the front running GT40 of Jordan and Walker decided to park it up having had enough of the grueling weather. Not really the result we were expecting but despite the biblical storm which lit up the skies and caused rivers to run across the track, and our mechanical issues we felt like it was a small team triumph just to get back out on the track!

T

he theme of the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed was ‘Addicted to Winning.’ And as mentioned at the Sunday prize giving, the weekend had seen more world motorsport champions from more disciplines in one place than anywhere else. Add to this the fact that the Goodwood Estate was favoured with good weather for the whole four days, MMS and FoS, whilst not more than 25 miles away heavy rain and thunder had been reported. No surprise then that a record crowd of nearly 200,000 had a weekend of petrol head delights.

New Cars On Show The Moving Motor Show on Thursday saw the unveiling of several new sports cars, a first public viewing of super car exotica and futuristic ‘concept ‘ cars that may or may not make it to production. All of which were there for the visitors to see close up and experience as they went up the hill. So many choices, so little time/ money. Plus the bonus for a lucky few, the experience of driving up the hill in some thing exotic. No wonder the Thursday event is proving so popular. And so to the main event and the big question? Would Sebastien Loeb be able to break the long standing hill climb record of 41.6 seconds? A time set by Nick Heidfeld in an F1 McLaren MP4/13 way back in 1999. As a result of delicate negotiations, Peugeot allowed Loeb back into the pilot’s seat of the 208 T16 875 bhp Pikes Peak special for the attempt. eager to talk about their cars and exploits. The event celebrated John Surtees’s 50th anniversary of winning the F1 title in 1964, with a selection of cars from his four wheeled exploits. Including the highly controversial TS19. Famous for its track success and infamous for its bold ‘Durex’

real next generation of F1? Or is it a fad that will fade? I was fortunate enough to visit the Formula-e International HQ at Donington Park for the final test session to gain a little more insight.

On arrival two things struck me. Firstly how relatively quiet it all was, none of the usual engine and car warming up sounds came from the paddock, and secondly how many people had turned up to

watch. OK entry was free, but this was a Tuesday in late August, and it was a test rather than a race day. Despite this a crowd of 4,000 had made the effort to come to watch. Winter 2014 35

impressive rapidity. Quiet they maybe, slow they ain’t! For this first season all the cars are the same, it’s only the suspension set up and the drivers talents that are different. On paper this should provide close and exciting racing. The need to pitstop around half distance to change cars will also add an element of uncertainty. Many a certain win has been scuppered by errors here.

The next race is in Putrajaya, Malaysia on November 22nd, and the final race will be in London on June 27th 2015. Will the race fans have taken this series to their hearts by London. I’m not sure. Or will it attract a whole new set of race aficionado’s, and take motor racing into new areas; ones that will embrace the high tech, clean, green, sustainable future. Again I’m not so sure. But given the level of professional effort and technology behind it, it may well be the future. You can make your own mind up without even leaving the comfort of your own home as all the races are being televised, so if you’re bored with F1’s shenanigans, or the bumper car mentality of the BTCC, why not take a look for yourself and make your own mind up. You never know you might get hooked!

Silverstone Sensation!

It seems like a long time ago now, but that needn’t stop us taking a quick look back at what was one of the biggest and best Silverstone Classics yet. Simon Hazeldine went along to the UK’s premier historic racing event.

T

hese days I seem to be lurching from one classic motoring event to another with alarming regularity, and were it not for my (admittedly totally disorganised) diary, I would probably implode with the stresses of trying to figure out where I’m supposed to be going next. Is it Donington, Brands, Knebworth, Brighton or Birmingham’s cavernous

NEC...who knows! And to be honest, your guess is as good as mine. So perhaps it is not all that surprising that these events get muddled together in my mind as some sort of classic car/ historic motorsport blur. It’s not usually a problem though; just refer to my notes a

few days after the event and it all comes flooding back. Not so with this years Silverstone Classic. Due to one thing or another, over two months had elapsed before I had to sit down and write this report.

Spectators were also treated to 24 on-track grids featuring no fewer than 1,125 cars which just about covered the full spectrum of motor racing history. The unprecedented number of entries topped last year’s figure of 1,113 and established yet another new record for the event. Sadly, the organisers didn’t get to celebrate these impressive milestones in the way they would have liked, as the 2014 Silverstone Classic also witnessed its first fatality in its 24-year history when well-known racer Denis Welch lost his life competing in the HGPCA race for pre-1966 Grand Prix cars on Sunday afternoon. Classic Formula 3 Of course, it was the racing that everyone was here to see and as usual it didn’t disappoint. A new addition to the grid this year was the Brian Henton Trophy for Classic Formula 3 cars. Their race was one of the event’s highlights and featured another strong performance from Nick Padmore, who led from the off to eventually win by just over eight seconds. Pre-56 Sportscars The spectacular showdown for pre ’56 sports cars had all the hallmarks of a classic endurance race, with pit-stop dramas and

amazing drives through the field, the hour-long spectacular wowed the Sunday morning crowds. The Cooper-Jaguar T38 led from the front with Frederic Wakeman at the wheel, pulling out a sizable lead during his stint. Positions looked to be set stable as the race neared mid-distance, but as ever the pit-stop phase shook everything up and left some very quick drivers scattered throughout the order. In the opening laps the race one winning #55 Fittipaldi F5A of Ollie Hancock held station at the front of the pack as an out-of-position Michael Lyons carved through the order from 13th on the grid. Lyons’ car then appeared to suffer some mechanical issues and he couldn’t make further progress, but ahead Hancock, Stretton, Hartley and the Williams of Christophe D’Ansembourg were trading places at almost every turn. Stretton managed to pull out a couple of seconds, and despite the best

efforts of Hartley, who set the fastest lap in the final few minutes of the race, held on to take a stunning victory.

Group C Endurance Cars The superlative Group C Endurance cars contested their second race of the weekend in glorious sunshine, and the Mercedes C11 continued its domination at the head of this field of ultra-rare racing machinery. In the hands of Bob Berridge

The race also featured superb comebacks from double BTCC champion John Cleland, who was tipped into spin in the first corner on lap one, and fellow BTCC hero Patrick Watts, who started at the back of the field after retiring from yesterday’s race. The pair finished just off the podium in fourth and fifth respectively after epic drives through the pack.

Pre-66 Grand Prix Cars It was an interrupted second contest for the pre ’66 Grand Prix cars, as an accident early on brought out the red flags. At the restart, Jason Minshaw pulled away in his Brabham BT4. He was chased down for much of the race by another Brabham – this time a BT11 in the hands of Jon Fairley. Cool Stuff To Spend Your Money On!

GAZ Telescopic Dampers for Triumph Stag Available from: GAZ Prices from: £55.03 plus VAT See: www.gazshocks.com

There is very little to say about the Gaz telescopic dampers that hasn’t been said before, and with these new offerings for the Triumph Stag, things are no different. You still get the usual well-made dampers that Gaz have become known for; they still offer an improvement in handling over the original factory fitted items; they are still fully adjustable while fitted to the car, and they look pretty funky too! The GAZ dampers offer on-the-car adjustable rebound at the front and on-thecar adjustable bump and rebound at the rear. Various fixed bump rates are available for the front depending on whether the vehicle is to be used on the road or in competition. The GAZ dampers feature a protective zinc plated body, all units are individually tested before leaving the factory and are covered by a two-year warranty. Front damper insets are available as part number GAI-2334 at £83.62 each and rear dampers are part number GT4-2113, retailing at £55.03 plus VAT each. If you own a Stag and want to improve the handling and road-holding, then these dampers will go a long way to making that happen.

Two-Core Aluminium Radiator for Classic Minis Available from: Mini Spares Prices from: £140.93 inc VAT See: www.minispares.com

Whenever certain Mini parts become hard to obtain Mini Spares often manufacture their own replacements, and when they do they take the opportunity to examine the design and the materials used to see if improvements can be made. This was the case with their lightweight aluminium, high efficiency, radiator designed exclusively by Mini Spares for improved fitment, rigidity and appearance. The side fitting radiator has been designed to fit all standard Minis and with this in mind the drain plug has been fitted at an angle so it can take a sender unit, as required, for later cars - 1990 on. Also the outlet pipe at top comes out facing backwards and the lower outlet has been set at the correct angle for “S” variants. Unfortunately other companies have also taken the opportunity to produce aluminium radiators, but with less successful results. Beware of poor durability and header tanks that are 10mm wider and biased towards the inner wing. These will foul the inner wing on 1990-2000 cars which had their engines 1/2” further forward. Make sure your new radiator will actually fit by insisting on a genuine Mini Spares radiator. This is a precision fit so don’t waste money on inaccurate copies. The Mini Spares 2 core alloy radiator can be ordered as part number C-ARA5000 at £140.93 including VAT. 56 www.cprmag.co.uk

“We’re ecstatic about the results achieved at this year’s Hershey sale,” said Gord Duff, car specialist, RM Auctions. “The incredible prices realized demonstrate RM’s proven success in presenting exceptional singlevendor collections within our catalogue sales, with both the Cars of John Moir and the Jeffrey Day Collection exceeding expectations. Attracting strong pre-sale interest, the group of 50 “best of category” vehicles garnered fantastic prices on the podium, led by a highly optioned, and beautifully restored 1956 Ford Fairlane Crown Victoria Skyliner ‘Glass Top’, for an outstanding $165,000, a new auction record for the model. Also commanding strong interest was the oldest lot of the sale, an expertly restored 1860 Abbott-Downing Stagecoach. A part of the Day Collection since 1971 and showing an amazing level of finish and detail throughout, the impressive survivor brought $330,000. Additional highlights included a highly original 1905 FIAT 60 HP Five-Passenger Tourer, originally owned by August Anheuser Busch Sr., for $825,000, and a beautifully restored and well-maintained 1933 Chrysler CL Imperial Dual-Windshield Phaeton for $522,500.

history, including two top ten finishes in the legendary Tour de France road race, the pure-bred competition Ferrari attracted strong interest from bidders in the room and on the telephones, eventually selling for a remarkable £4,872,000. The second highest sale of the evening went to another rare Maranello car, a 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB, chassis 08199, one of only 60 constructed with alloy bodywork. Freshly restored, this magnificent matching-numbers example achieved £1,960,000. Proving that not every bigselling car needs a prancing horse on its badge, the third top sale went to the awesome 1964 Shelby 289 Competition Cobra, CSX 2430, which rumbled its way onto the block, shaking the seats of the excited audience before achieving £1,176,000 It wasn’t just the top-end cars attracting strong attention from bidders during the four-hour sale. Many of the cars offered were noteworthy for their low mileage, ‘as new’ presentation. One prime example, a 1989 Ferrari 328 GTS, presented in the classic colour combination of Rosso Corsa with beige leather interior, and showing less than 200 kilometres from new, achieved an amazing £156,800 against a pre-sale estimate of £65,000 - £95,000. Proving that supercars of the 1980s and 90s are very much in demand; a stunning 1990 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary model with just 2,600 kilometres recorded, made a very impressive £224,000 against a pre-sale estimate of £140,000-£180,000. Another 1980s icon, a 1984 Peugeot 205 Turbo 16, a rare example of the mid-engined, Group B homologated WRC car in road-going trim, more than doubled its pre-sale estimate at a final £156,800. The amazing CIAM-NASA Hypersonic Flying Laboratory ‘Kholod’, which garnered significant

pre-sale media attention, took pride of place outside the Battersea auction venue. The fastest serially produced machine to travel within Earth’s atmosphere at 4,925mph, this fascinating aerospace artefact sold for £38,025. This 1972 Fiat Giannini 650 NP sold for an amazing €33.600.

The Best Of MG Format: PAL DVD Running Time: 1hour 34 minutes Price: £19.99 Available From: www.motorfilms.com There is a huge variety of videos and DVDs currently available which showcase the cars once built by Abingdon-based MG Car Company Ltd, but few, if any of these feature films that were actually put together by the manufacturer of these famous British sportscars. However, this offering from Motorfilms boasts a compilation of classic original promotional films from the MG and BMC archives which have been re-mastered for DVD. The disc boasts a total of four individual films, starting off with the longest one which is ‘MGB: The Story of the Best Selling MG Sports Car.’ This 50 minute long film features masses of archive footage, much of which has never been seen before, along with interviews from key people of the era to explore the myths, legends and facts behind its design, production and competition history. John Thornley, the legendary ‘gaffer’; Don Hayter, its gifted designer; and Stuart Turner, manager of the successful competitions team; all speak freely of the camaraderie and the secrets of those times, and explain why the MGB was the most successful MG sports car ever built, quickly achieving classic status by epitomising the Britishness and winning hearts throughout the world. More than 500,000 were sold between its conception in 1962 and the eventual closure of the famous Abingdon factory, where it was built, in 1980. The next film on the DVD is ‘Safety Fast’ which was made in 1932 and runs for 14 minutes. This quality black and white silent film made by the Morris Cine Department follows a young couple on their tour of the factory before collecting their new car. It features rare period footage of the MG works and personnel and offers a delightful glimpse behind the scenes of the pre-war MG factory. Changing up a gear, the next short film is ‘Exhibit B801’ which was shot in 1950 and is 17 minutes long. It tells the story of Goldie Gardner’s record breaking car EX135 from display at the Festival of Britain to the land speed record runs on the

Bonneville Salt Flats in the USA. The film includes actual footage of the record breaking attempts using a standard MG TD. Last, and by no means least, is a short promo-film called ‘Magic Carpet.’ This 1962 made movie runs for just 10 minutes and was originally made as part of MG’s marketing campaign in the USA. The film starts off by showing a young couple test driving their new MG 1100 on a visit to the UK. On the way the call in at Goodwood racing circuit where Graham Hill just happens to be on hand for a test drive. Overall this DVD offers a wonderful insight into how MG produced, marketed and sold its cars at the time of their production and with some of the footage getting its first ever public exposure, this collection is bound to be of interest to any MG enthusiast. Well worth a look!

Speedy Stories & Revving Reads!

Ferrari 250 GTO Manual Author: Glen Smale Price: £25.00 Format: Hardback. ISBN: 9780857333841 Available From: www.haynes.co.uk

The Ferrari 250 GTO is one of the world’s rarest, most desirable and most valuable cars, and the new Haynes Ferrari 250 GTO Owner’s Workshop Manual takes a look under the bonnet to reveal what makes it such an icon. The 250 GTO is one of the most sought-after cars in existence among collectors, due to its magnificent styling, impressive track record and rarity. This latest title in the Haynes Manuals classic racing car series – Ferrari 250 GTO Manual, by Glen Smale – offers a unique insight into owning, racing and maintaining this iconic sports racer. Ferrari designed the 250 GTO purely for racing success, and its impressive 3.0-litre V12 engine, fine handling and robust construction helped it to dominate the GT category of sports car racing from 1962 to 1964 in events such as the Tour de France, Targa Florio and Le Mans, taking Ferrari to a hat-trick of GT Manufacturers’ titles. Ferrari only built 39 examples of the 250 GTO, and this rarity helps to explain the price tag, with a 250 GTO selling in 2013 for $52 million in a private transaction – a record for any car. The Ferrari 250 GTO Manual charts the design, development, evolution and racing achievements of the 250 GTO in detail, with insightful first-hand accounts from several of the men who drove and ran them, including drivers Sir Stirling Moss, John Surtess OBE and ‘Gentleman Jack’ Sears. This in-depth study, illustrated with numerous period and modern-day photographs, provides a fascinating insight into what makes the 250 GTO one of the rarest and most revered cars of all time. Ford GT40 Manual Author: Gordon Bruce Price: £25.00 Format: Hardback. ISBN: 9780857331144 Available From: www.haynes.co.uk

‘Whether you own a GT40 or one of its derivatives, aspire to doing so, or are simply among their thousands of ardent admirers, the Ford GT40 Manual provides a fascinating insight into their creation, development into allconquering Le Mans winners, and seamless metamorphosis into one of the most cherished of historic racing cars. When his attempts to purchase Ferrari were denied by ‘il Commendatore’ himself, Henry Ford II vowed to create a car that would beat the Scuderia in its own backyard. The Blue Oval’s mistake was in thinking the task could be achieved in 12 months flat. So followed two years of very public failure, as the GT40 and its derivatives were honed into the four times Le Mans winners they ultimately became, courtesy of the mighty dollar and a unique blend of British and American engineering nous. The heavily illustrated Ford GT40 Manual features many unique interviews with those involved in the car’s extraordinary history - including Eric Broadley, on whose Lola MK6 the GT40 was partially based; ‘Mr GT40’ himself, John Etheridge, who worked on the very first prototype and was still spannering examples of the breed at his retirement some 44 years later; and Tony Loades, who worked at his father’s company, Abbey Panels, the firm that crafted each and every GT40 chassis. There are also first-hand accounts from a number of those who literally drove the model into the record books - including 1969 Le Mans winner Jackie Oliver; David Hobbs and Richard Attwood; plus Gelscoe Motorsport’s Andy Newall, who has more recently raced no less than 20 examples of the legendary sports racer. Among over 300 images are many previously unseen contemporary photographs - including two that clearly show Ford’s famously staged 1966 Le Mans victory was far from as reported in so many previous accounts. Others detail the anatomy of this mid-engined racing supercar, unearth the so-often hidden corrosion that exists in unrestored examples, and show how perfect toolroom copies are constructed today and original cars are completely refurbished. The Ford GT40 Manual is definitely a ‘must have’ for any GT40 and sports car racing enthusiast.

Austin Allegro : An Enthusiast’s Guide Author: Ben Wanklyn RRP: £15.49 Format: Paperback. ISBN: 978 1 84797 6765 Available From: www.motorbooks.co.uk

The stylist of the Austin Allegro, Harris Mann, said of the car that “It took a lot of stick, but it wasn’t that bad a car. The trouble was that every one off the line was different in some way, thanks to quality control.” As a result, few have bothered to explore the little Austin’s background; what it was designed to achieve, how it became the way it was, and what happened to make it so infamous. Austin Allegro - An Enthusiast’s Guide redresses the balance, telling the Allegro’s tale of grand designs, high hopes, management compromises, failed dreams, industrial unrest, national ridicule and finally, redemption. Now experiencing something of a comeback as a cheap and cheerful classic, the book provides ownership advice and buying information for all models. The book is well written and is nicely illustrated throughout with a mix of colour and black & white photographs. It also features some of the original sales brochure photos and drawings which give an idea of the cars intended market when it was launched. From the quietly competent series 2 models through to the sportily-styled and now very rare Equipe, the book re-evaluates the place of the Allegro in the classic car world and concludes that it is both a simple, economical classic choice, and an important part of British motoring history.

The Book of the Porsche 356 Author: Brian Long RRP: £50.00 Format: Hardback. ISBN: 978-1-84584-035-8 Available From: www.veloce.co.uk

Although not the first automotive design to emanate from the pen of Dr Ferdinand Porsche, the 356 is regarded as the car that kick-started the rise of the German manufacturer from niche car maker to the global phenomenon that it is today. ‘The Book of the Porsche 356’ is a re-issue of a previously published book, which has been revised and reformatted to bring it right up to date, and also includes over 100 new photographs. It now also includes information on replica 356s and contains helpful buying and restoration advice. However, it is the well researched and in-depth history of the car and the people behind it that makes this such a fascinating book. Based loosely upon the VW Beetle, the 356 represented the birth of a legend. The curvaceous little coupés and spyders were a huge success throughout the world, and continued to be so throughout the model’s life because of a policy of continuous development. This book looks at the full and fascinating story of the Porsche 356, and the racing and rallying cars which sprang from it. It also tells the story of the very beginnings of what, today, is one of the greatest sports car marques and an icon of automotive excellence. With many period photographs, complimented by cutaway style drawings and illustrations, this book is a visual delight. The well written text is clear an unambiguous and flows well. With over 240 pictures and extensive, well researched text, this book is a must for any Porsche fanatic.
