Editorial 2014 continues to gain momentum as the new season gradually comes upon us. The general consensus here at CPR Towers is ‘so far...so good’ as the selection of shows, events and auctions we have attended have nearly all exceeded our expectations. The biggest show we went to in February was Race Retro at Stoneleigh, and jolly good it was too. You can read the full report on the show elsewhere in this issue, but we were impressed with both the quality of the cars at the show and the awesome live rally stage that showcased the amazing Group B cars from yesteryear. Talking of rallies, our congratulations go out to Sarah Bennett-Baggs and Mike Thorne for completing the gruelling 2,000 mile Winter Challenge rally which started at the Race Retro show in Coventry and ran down to Monte Carlo. The pair battled some pretty extreme conditions in their trusty Rover P4, and while others fell by the wayside, our intrepid duo pressed on and made it all the way to the finish. Check out Sarah’s write-up of the event - it’s a fantastic read. Modena Museum Reopens Under Ferrari Control
The revamped and renamed Museo Casa Enzo Ferrari has reopened its doors after a major renovation and is now being run directly by Ferrari. To celebrate the opening, a ceremony was held on February 18, which was attended by Luca di Montezemolo and Piero Ferrari. The new displays in the museum feature 19 high definition multi-projectors designed to immerse visitors in the sights and sounds of the iconic Ferrari brand, and also tell the story Enzo Ferrari starting in 1947 when he founded Ferrari S.p.A. The spacious 6,000sq/m building houses some of Ferrari’s most iconic cars, like the 275GTB, the F40 and of course, an ‘Enzo.’ Ferrari says that this Modena based museum will compliment its own facility at Maranello which last year saw over 300,000 visitors pass through its doors making it one of the most popular museums in Italy. Speaking about the museum’s new displays, a spokesman for Ferrari said: “The new life of the spectacular museum has begun with the large and beautiful main wing: here, as well as seeing the most important cars in the history of the Ferrari driver, constructor and creator of the Scuderia, you go into a veritable “time machine” that will take visitors through 100 years of history via multiple projections that will immerse the public in images, sounds and emotions. The 18 projectors weave together the history of Modena motoring, the story of Enzo Ferrari and his deeds and the world in which it all happened. London Classic Car Boot Sale Set To Return Following the success of last October’s Classic Car Boot Sale in London, the organisers are going to do it all again...but this time it will be a two-day event. It will be held on March 15-16 at the South Bank Centre and entry to the sale will cost £4.00. The event is being run by Wayne Hemingway MBE under his ‘Vintage’ banner and the idea is that vendors buy a pitch and then turn up in classic cars and sell vintage items such as clothing, furniture or LPs from the boot of their car. The first event back in October attracted an attendance of around 8,000 people, but the organisers are hoping for close to 20,000 this time round. They are describing it as a “vehicular vintage delight, a vintage shoppers cornucopia of vintage clothing, accessories, household goods, memorabilia, vinyl records, street food, slideshows, impromptu musical performances and street theatre.” classiccarbootsale.co.uk

Police Collection On The Move
Historic Police Cars Move To New Home The Metropolitan Police’s Historical Vehicle Fleet has relocated from its base at Hampton Garage in London and moved to a new home at the Peel Centre in Hendon. A small crowd of onlookers, including a number of current and retired traffic officers, gathered to bid farewell to the collection on February 26. The cars in the collection date back as far as 1948, with the oldest one being a Wolseley 18/85 which led the convoy of cars behind a motorcycle escort made up of a 1956 Triumph Speed Twin and a 1966 650 Basic. The Wolseley added to the occasion by sounding its vintage two-tone siren as it set off on its journey. Other cars in the convoy included a 1970 Morris Minor, a 1983 Rover SD1 and an ex-Special Branch 1973 armoured Rover P6 3500 which was used as a 10 Downing Street protection vehicle until 1987. Unfortunately, one of the cars in the collection had to be left behind when it was discovered that its MOT certificate had run out! The offending vehicle was a Triumph 2.5PI which was spotted languishing in the garage surrounded vintage traffic signs and other museum exhibits. Graham Hill Lotus For Sale
Graham Hill Lotus 49B Offered For Sale A 1968 Lotus 49B Formula1 car once driven by Graham Hill is to go ‘under the hammer’ at the Bonhams sale at this years Goodwood Festival of Speed. The car comes from the collection of the late John Dawson-Damer, who was killed while driving a Lotus 63 at Goodwood in 2000. The car being offered for sale was originally built as a Lotus 49 Tasman car and was raced by Hill in early 1969. It was later driven by Richard Attwood at Monaco before it was upgraded to 49B spec and driven by Graham Hill in the British Grand Prix. The car is one of a handful remaining of just 12 Lotus 49s produced. Its Colin Chapman concept, detailed by his gifted designer Maurice Phillippe, perfected a stressed-skin monocoque forward fuselage which terminated immediately behind the driver’s cockpit, to which the brand-new Cosworth-Ford DFV engine was then bolted as the rear chassis member, carrying the ZF or Hewland gearbox and rear suspension. James Knight, Bonhams Group Motoring Director, said: “By every standard, Colin Chapman’s Lotus 49 concept is an absolute landmark in Formula 1 design. It simply raised the bar for every rival manufacturer, and its Cosworth-Ford V8 engine went on to win a record 155 World Championship Grands Prix. www.bonhams.com

Dutch Porsche Crew Victors In Winter Challenge Jan Ebus and Jan Berkhof have emerged as the winners of the 19th running of The Winter Challenge. The Dutch crew forged a dominant display in front of many of Europe’s leading classic rally competitors, their 1964 Porsche 356 taking them to a lead of over two and a half minutes over second placed David Hughes, Richard Dix and Martin Neal in a VolvoJan Ebus And Jan Berkhof Winners of Winter Challenge 2014 on Col De Turini Near Monte Carlo 122s of a similar age. In third were Charles Colton and Ryan Pickering in a 1965 Porsche 911, Colton a previous winner of The Pirelli Classic Marathon amongst other events. This was the first contributing round to the 2014 HERO Cup in association with EFG, the event started simultaneously from two places, Europe’s Premier Winter show for Classic Motorsport, Race Retro at Stoneleigh Park, Coventry and the picturesque town of Troyes, situated in the Champagne region of France. Jeremy Dickson, Event Director added: “It’s always tough running a winter event where there is a desire for at least part of the event to be on snowy roads, but at the same time ensuring that should roads be closed by snow, an alternative competitive route is still available. This year’s route was a great success, and we were rewarded with a morning of fresh snow that for many was the highlight of the event. All entrants were very complimentary of the overall route which was largely traffic free, enabling the drivers to enjoy the drive, and navigators to concentrate on finding the correct road, not always easy when there are many more roads than shown on the map.” www.craevents.eu

Chilly Roof-Down Run For Classic Convertibles In France More than 50 classic convertibles and 100 participants braved sub-zero temperatures on February 16, to take part in the third Prom’ des Neiges from Nice to the Col de Turini. The event is open only to convertible cars and is organised each year by the Automobile Club of Nice Côte d’Azur which was founded in 1896. The 80km run set off from Piazza Garibaldi in reasonably mild weather and the conditions remained good for much of the route as the cars made their way to the top of the famous 1,607m Col de Turini. Now only in its third year, the organisers say that entries have more than quadrupled since its inception, and a wide variety of cars - especially British classics - took part in the event. Among those cars were examples from: MG, AustinHealey, Jaguar, Lotus, Morgan and Triumph, but other non-Brits taking part included cars from Porsche, MercedesBenz, Ferrari, Citroen, but perhaps the most popular car on the event was the stunning 1933 Hotchkiss AM80 belonging to Claude Alquier. www.automobileclubdenice.com

F1 Cars To Star At Brands Hatch Historic Festival Masters Historic Racing is working on providing a large collection of Formula One cars for its annual Brands Hatch Festival. The 2014 Brands Hatch Masters Festival will celebrate the anniversary of the first F1 Grand prix held at the Kent circuit 50 years ago. The event will feature both races and demonstrations for Formula One cars from across the decades, including the two races for the FIA Masters Historic Formula One Championship and the Historic Grand Prix Cars Association’s Pre ’66 grids. The festival will be a true celebration of Formula 1 history with not only track demonstrations but static displays as well. Masters’ Event Manager Rachel Bailey said: “We are working hard to make Brands Hatch full of Formula One cars. With four races for cars up to the 1980s plus demonstrations and displays, Brands Hatch will be the place to see Formula One history and to see how the category has evolved over the years. We will have cars from as many constructors as possible, those still competing and those long forgotten. The event will be one not to be missed! History in the Making at Thruxton Easter Revival The organisers of this year’s Thruxton Easter Revival (April 19-20) say the event will not just be celebrating the very best of motor sport history – it will also be making motor racing history all of its own. The special two-day event was established 12 months ago and harks back to the famous Easter race meetings of the late Sixties and Seventies, when all the top drivers of the day would compete at the super-fast Hampshire airfield circuit in front of huge holiday crowds. Adding to this year’s excitement, the programme includes the opening rounds of the eagerly-anticipated new HSCC Super Touring Car Championship. Fronted by the British Touring Car Championship here in Britain, Super Touring was the global saloon car racing phenomenon in the Nineties, with a host of major manufacturers keen to prove the sportiness of familiar family cars on the world’s racetracks. Formula One teams including Williams and McLaren were commissioned by the likes of Renault and BMW to create what remain the most high-tech generation of racing tin-tops ever seen. The F1-inspired cars weren’t only incredibly fast but the no-holds-barred, bumper-to-bumper racing served up a feast of entertainment followed by millions on television. Both double BTCC champion John Cleland and touring car legend Patrick Watts are expected to be among those rolling back the years at Thruxton, as late Nineties models of the ilk of the BMW 320i, Honda Accord, Nissan Primera, Vauxhall Vectra and Williams Renault Laguna prepare to go wheel-to-wheel with the fearsome, flame-spitting Ford Sierra RS500. “We are honoured that Thruxton will be hosting the very first rounds of the new Super Touring Car Championship,” said Bill Coombs, Thruxton Group Managing Director. “Lots of us grew up watching those epic BTCC battles on our TVs and so it’s great to see so many of those fantastic cars – not to mention a few of the illustrious drivers – recreating what was a memorable period in motor sport history. Ferrari Asian Racing Day Hailed Success
The first Ferrari Racing Day held in Asia ended with the biggest parade of Ferrari cars ever seen Malaysia. This truly memorable event at Sepang circuit of February 23, featured plenty of adrenalin fueled action. Kicking off the day was a show from the three Formula 1 ‘Clienti’ cars that performed several laps giving spectators a taste of F1 power. They also got to enjoy the sight of two F2001s which Michael Schumacher had driven to the world title, as well as the F2007 in which Kimi Raikkonen became world champion. After the Formula 1 cars, it was time for the cars in the XX programmes to ramp up the action, as two FXX and seven 599XX cars thrilled spectators in the stands with the noise of the engines and their extreme performance. “We have a history here in Malaysia and the spectators know the marque and its aura,” said the head of Ferrari Far East, Giuseppe Cattaneo. “We have a long standing group of customers in this country, which we want to consolidate and grow. VSCC Spring Start Set For ERA Extravaganza! Following the success of last year’s inaugural two-day format, the Vintage Sports Car Club Spring Start will again herald the opening of the historic motor racing season on April 12/13. With races catering for all types of Pre- and Post-war Racing and Sports-Cars, there is sure to be machinery on display to satisfy all interests, whilst our competing members will have a wide choice of races to exercise their various cars over the weekend, with opportunities for everyone on both days of the meeting. As is tradition, Saturday’s focus will fall on the VSCC’s own GP Itala Trophies with a number of the Club’s most prominent silverware for the taking throughout the day’s programme, including the collection’s namesake GP Itala Trophy for Vintage Racing Cars; the Amschel Rothschild and Patrick Lindsay Memorial Trophies Race will bring together the very best Grand Prix Cars of the immediate Pre- and Post-war eras and, with representatives from exalted names as ERA, Bugatti, Lotus, Connaught, Maserati, Cooper Bristol and Ferrari and many more expected, this is one of the most elite grids you are likely to see anywhere. Our Fox & Nicholl Trophy Race is sure to be a highlight with guaranteed full grid of genuine Pre-war SportsCars whilst we also host the Club’s traditional Regularity Trial, the ideal introductory event for those new to circuit racing. The day will be complemented by Invited grids from the ever-revered Pre-1966 Grand Prix Cars of the HGPCA, the first of their two races over the weekend and FISCAR, whose Post-war Sports Cars from manufacturers such as HWM, Jaguar and Aston Martin return to celebrate the wonderful career of George Abecassis following last year’s successful Centenary event. Triumph Sports Six Club
Triumph Sports Six Club Gears Up For TriumFest The Triumph Sports Six Club is holding its ‘TriumFest’ show at Donington Park race circuit in Leicestershire on July 26-27, and the club says all Triumph cars are welcome. Previously known as the TSSC International Weekend, the event will be hosted on Donington’s new ‘Launch Pad’ site which includes the ‘Heritage Loop.’ The club says it has also booked the adjoining Donington Park Farmhouse Campsite and Caravan Park so that members can make use of its facilities which include shower blocks and a campsite bar for food and drinks. The campsite is available from midday on Friday 25. Among the events planned to take place at the show are: a Friday evening beer festival, a trade and members autojumble market, a concours competition, a live band, laps of the ‘Heritage Loop’ and an ‘on track Triumph Parade.’ You can find out more by visiting the club’s website at: www.tssc.org.uk

MGCC Welcomes Cecil Kimber’s Grandson To Club HQ
THE MG Car Club says it was honoured to receive a visit from Cecil Kimber’s grandson, Kim McGavin on February 4. He visited the Club’s headquarters in Abingdon in Oxfordshire, to present the Car Club with a collection of MG documents and memerobilia, including a signed photo of Lord Nuffield, which had belonged to his mother, Jean Kimber-Cook. After a tour of Kimber House (the club’s headquarters building), which is home to a number of Kimber’s personal belongings such as his briefcase, pipes and tobacco boxes, McGavin visited Abingdon’s County Hall Museum. The MG Car Club’s archivist Peter Neal has begun sorting through the collection and the club says it will publish details in the March issue of its club magazine - Safety Fast! www.mgcc.co.uk

Jaguar Day Planned For Horwood House & Gardens The Jaguar Drivers Club has announced that it will hold its ‘National Day 2014’ at Horwood House & Gardens, near Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, on August 10. Visitors can of course be guaranteed a stunning display of Jaguar cars, but among the other attractions on offer are the Annual Concours competitions for the SS Register, the Mk1 & 2 Register and the Classic S-Type Register. RaceRetro Once again, the UK’s annual Race Retro show hosted a glittering array of historic racing cars in the halls at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, on February 21-23. Simon Hazeldine went along to find out more.
O
ver the years, Race Retro has firmly established itself as the UK’s premier historic motorsport exhibition, and each year it acts as an unofficial curtain-raiser for the forthcoming historic motorsport season. It provides a unique shopping mall for teams and drivers where they can purchase just about anything they require for their cars. Need a 20 www.cprmag.co.uk
set of bespoke wire wheels for a 1930s Alfa Romeo, or aluminium bodywork for a 1970s Le Mans veteran? No problem! You can get it all at Race Retro. With over 250 exhibitors displaying their wares at the show, if you couldn’t find it here then you probably wont find it anywhere. Of course, this show isn’t just about shopping; it also provides a great opportunity
to get up close to some amazing historic racing cars and this year was no exception.
Milestones With one of this year’s themes being the 50th anniversary of McLaren, it was perhaps no surprise to find that some of the most famous cars on display were indeed products of the Woking-based manufacturer.

One of two McLaren M23s at the show. Inside the main foyer sat a 1974 McLaren M23 Formula1 car that was driven by James Hunt, and was also the car that starred in the recent Hollywood blockbuster about Hunt’s life - Rush. Just inside the main door to Hall 2 which thanks to Stoneleigh’s odd layout is actually the first hall most people visit - was the main display of McLaren cars. This featured another one of the M23 cars from the ‘Hunt’ era, though this one was driven by the teams then number one driver Emerson Fittipaldi, to take
the 1974 F1 double, drivers and constructors world championships. This was Fittipaldi’s second F1 world championship but the teams first constructors F1 world championship. McLaren went on to become the most successful team in the history of F1 GP racing. Alongside the M23 was an example of the fearsome McLaren M8 Can-Am Challenge car, the 7litre plus Chevrolet V8 powered monster that dominated the halcyon years of the rich CanadianAmerican Challenge Cup series for unlimited sports
racing cars. In the hands of Bruce McLaren himself, and star driver Denny Hulme, the bright orange cars from McLaren saw off all comers for three dominant seasons. Looking slightly more modern next to the other cars was a McLaren F1 that enjoyed an astounding victory at the 1995 Le Mans 24 Hour race against purebred racing opposition.
Monster Metro As is the norm with Race Retro, there was more than one featured marque or milestone being celebrated, and the other notable inclusion at March 2014 21
this years show was the 30th anniversary of the Metro 6R4 Group B rally car. Yes, the seemingly insane mutation of Austin’s humble Metro, a small ‘shopping car’ that became a fire-breathing monster of a car, is 30 years old. The car was sanctioned by Austin Rover Group, who conscious of the worldwide publicity value of rallying, commissioned Williams Grand Prix engineering to create the AR challenger for the spectacular Group B rally series. Forever afterwards known as the cars that were ‘too fast to race’ these spectacular monsters of 1980’s world One of the Metro 6R4s at the show.

Right: McLaren F1 at Race Retro. rally were built to virtually ‘no holds barred’ regulations, the main stipulation being that at least two hundred examples of the model had to be built before acceptance into competition. Using a Williams GP developed rear mounted 400 bhp V6 version of the AR
Group aluminium V8 engine, coupled to constant four wheel drive transmission, the tubular space framed machine was clothed in bodywork resembling the humble Mini Metro, albeit very much on steroids! Among the star drivers of the works fielded cars were British crowd favourites Tony Pond and a young Malcolm Wilson. After the demise of Group B rallying, the remaining stock of 6R4’s were slightly detuned from the original works specification and became a mainstay of British championship stage rallying for several more seasons. No red-blooded rally enthusiast who heard it race in anger

Rally stage I should mention that it is this ‘rally stage’ which sets Race Retro apart from many other ‘static’ motorsport shows as it gives the event a live element which the visitors really appreciate. This year saw the aforementioned 6R4s
running alongside Group B and a spectacle...and thankfully C rally cars including Rauno much warmer than it was last Aaltonen’s Mini Cooper, the year. Rothmans Audi Quattro, the Brookes Sapphire and ex-Auriol Iconic Replica Ford Sierra Cosworths, and the I enjoyed wandering aimlessly around the halls and ex-McRae Lotus Cortina. Quite ‘discovering’ more impressive racing cars at each and every turn. If I had to pick a favourite, it would be the one car that actually stopped me in my tracks - the ‘jawdroppingly’ beautiful Gulf liveried Porsche 917. This immaculate Le Mans 24 Hour Race legend was residing on the stand belonging to the 360 Motor Racing Club and was Porsche 911 on the attracting a lot of attention. Tour Britannia stand. it is a stunning looking car, but I wonder how many of its admirers knew it was actually a replica? The car belongs to Graham turner and he regularly races it in select events around the UK, and that makes him a very lucky chap in my book.

Back in the halls, and the crowds were delighted to find British motor racing legend Sir Stirling Moss on the interview stage with host Gemma Scott and the queues for the autograph signings crossed into two halls. Other motorsport greats attending the event included Touring Cars’ Win Percy, Worldrenowned navigator Willy Cave, Jaguar test driver Norman Dewis, multi-championship titleholder Barry Lee, World Sidecar champ Stan Dibben

There was a wide variety of cars taking part in the ‘Winter Challenge.’ and the ever-popular Barrie ‘Whizzo’ Williams. Visitors were also treated to interviews with triple British Rally Champion turned Hollywood stunt driver Mark Higgins, and TV motoring presenters Quentin Willson, Wheeler Dealer Mike Brewer and Classic Car SOS’ Fuzz Townshend.

The Koenigsegg can trace its origins back to 1994 when a youthful Christian von Koenigsegg formed his own company and set about designing his first car - the Koenigsegg CC. It first broke cover at a BPR GT race at the Anderstorp racetrack in 1996, where it was driven by Swedish touring car ace Rickard Rydell. The following year saw the second prototype CC being paraded at the Cannes Film Festival, but it wasn’t until 2002 that the first production car rolled off the line - a red Koenigsegg CC8S which was used initially as the company’s official test car. It was this actu car that was later converted to CCR spec and went on to smash the speed record held by the

Well appointed interior. McLaren F1 in 2005. The new Agera R that stands before me is the natural evolution of that earlier car. It is more or less the same basic shape; the doors look the same, the windscreen looks the same, in fact there are quite a few similarities between that first car and this one, and yet they are so very different. There is good reason for that too.
Perfect Supercar
Christian von Koenigsegg described the original CC8S as “the perfect supercar” and he still stands by that statement today. What the Agera R represents is the natural evolution of that car, updated and refined to fit in with modern day requirements. It looks bigger, and more aggressive. It looks like a CC8S that has been pumped full of steroids. There are
intakes and vents all over the bodywork, and each one serves a very specific function. For example, the side vents extract excess heat from behind the front wings and draw it down the side of the car. Under the huge engine cover lurks the heart of the car; a 5.0 litre V8 producing an eye-watering 960hp on regular 95 octane fuel and 1,140hp using E85 bio fuel. It’s a lightweight unit too which
weighs just 197kg with clutch, flywheel, exhaust, dry sump system, turbo and manifold attached. It accelerates like the Millenium Falcon jumping into hyperspace, with a 0-62mph time of 2.8 seconds and has a top speed of 273mph...and that aint no typo folks!

get this car out on the road, but it’s that word right there that is the problem - road. I am going to drive this car on the public roads, so no chance of doing 273mph then. Naturally I will be...ahem... sticking to the 70mph speed limit. More or less. Climbing into the car through the slightly odd pivoting door 34 www.cprmag.co.uk
arrangement is a bit weird, but ultimately unchallenging. It is surprisingly roomy inside and doesn’t feel at all claustrophobic. The view out of the car is reminiscent of one of the Le Mans prototype cars like the Audi R18, with its curved ‘wraparound’ windscreen and small aircraft style side windows.
The seats are positioned towards the centre of the cockpit, which either gives a smaller frontal area on the outside of car or improves the weight distribution, depending on who you talk too. It’s not an issue, but it just takes a little while to adjust to it. Right, so let’s get this thing on the road. A brief press of the

Handling
starter button and it sounds like the Hounds of Hades have been released directly behind me. The engine roars into life before it quickly settles down to a restrained purr. Pressing the right-hand paddle behind the steering wheel engages first gear and a squeeze on the accelerator pedal moves the
car forwards. As it moves up through the gears the Agera R feels smooth and very responsive. It absorbs the lumps and bumps on some of Surrey’s more rural roads with surprising ease, thanks mainly to the Triplex rear suspension system fitted to the car. This utilizes a shock absorber and spring to connect the right
and left rear wheels allowing the two rear wheels to influence one another when desired. The Triplex system works in series with the car’s regular springs and dampers, allowing the spring and damping rates to be lowered. compromising dry track handling and also incorporates an anti-squat system which is designed into the geometry of the suspension. On the narrow country lanes the car feels very wide and I find myself slowing down when faced with oncoming 36 www.cprmag.co.uk
traffic. In fact, the Agera R is exactly two metres wide, and that measurement was chosen as it is the maximum width allowed for cars that race at Le Mans. Still, it’s narrower than a Lamborghini Aventador so not as extreme as you might think.
The view of the road ahead is excellent, with the windscreen curving around the driver to give a panoramic view of the outside world. It’s like a giant cinema screen where you get to change the speed of the film with your right foot! And boy, do you have to be careful with it. Your right foot that is. Lean a little too hard on that throttle pedal and the forces of G will pin you back into the sumptuous leather seat with alarming ease. The rate of acceleration takes your breath away and you can

exceed the legal speed limit in a mere three seconds. There are other notable times associated with the Agera R too. It holds the Guinness World Record for fastest production car to accelerate from 0-300 km/h and brake back to zero in 21.19 seconds, and it will do 0-100km/h in just 2.8 seconds with 200km/h achieved in just 7.8 seconds. Its straight line speed is just incredible, and it’s pretty good in the corners too. The Agera R has an improved aerodynamic package which give far greater down force than its predecessors and ensure it remains pinned to the road at all times. It gives huge amounts of confidence as you hurl the car onto the tightest corners and feel the tyres almost eating into the road. The car goes exactly where you point it and there is no strain or shudder from the steering wheel; it feels so effortless. Much of that downforce is produced by the rear spoiler. Unlike many of its contemporaries, the spoiler on the Agera R is not electrically operated. Instead it is fixed to the car via sprung attachments and the angle of the aerofoil adjusts to suit the air flowing over it. It certainly does an amazing job. There is no doubt that the Koenigsegg Agera R is a sensational car. It handles like a dream, and even has a decent amount of refinement in the cockpit too. But it’s the sheer speed of the thing that impresses most. It kicks you in the back and takes off like a bullet from a gun. Nothing can prepare you for that. Only a few theme park rides might come close, and possibly getting launched off the deck of an aircraft carrier in an F18 Hornet jet fighter, but otherwise it is an experience that defies belief. Now, ask me if I would like to keep this car, and I will show you another question that can be answered in 0.25 seconds!

VSCC Pomeroy Trophy - Silverstone
The long established Pomeroy Trophy staged by the Vintage Sports Car Club at Silverstone, Northamptonshire, offers a superb variety of cars seldom seen elsewhere. Words/Pictures - Chris McEvoy.

ince it’s founding 80 years ago the Vintage SportsCar Club (VSCC) has provided it’s members with a competitive and social environment in which to indulge their passion for vintage and 42 www.cprmag.co.uk
historic vehicles. The club participates in every aspect of motoring and motorsport for Pre-war cars, and as a result the VSCC is one of the largest and best regarded motoring clubs in the world.
For many racing fans these vintage and historic cars evoke a level of enthusiasm that more modern machinery can’t achieve. With names such as Frazer-Nash, Alvis, Bugatti and ERA there’s a whole lot of ‘soul’

embedded in every one of these cars. Since 2014 is the e VSCC’s 80th Anniversary year it is perhaps not surprising that its event schedule for this year includes a wide range of activities covering trials, tours, rallies and race meetings. They will enable members to enjoy the sporting aspect of their cars without over stressing
either themselves or their machinery. The Pomeroy trophy, which

compete directly alongside pre-war ones. An entry list of 76 cars, the eldest being a 3.7L 1923 Crossley Sports, meant that there was plenty of variety on show. But which would win, a modern hightech manufactured one (relatively speaking), or a basic rear drum brakes only, wind in the hair and bugs in the teeth version? March 2014 43

The ‘Pom’ Trophy as it’s affectionately known, was first mooted by John Rowley way back in 1947. It’s named after Laurence Pomeroy Snr, who was the chief designer at Vauxhall at the turn of the 19th century. Pomeroy Snr had been responsible for several successful vehicles. The 1914 4.5 litre Grand Prix Vauxhall and the Prince Henry touring
car are perhaps the best known of these. His son Laurence Pomeroy Jnr, along with T. W. Badgery presented a model of the 1914 GP Vauxhall to be used as the prize to be known as the Laurence Pomeroy Memorial Trophy. The underlying competition would be for the best touring car. To determine this a series of tests were devised; perhaps this
is where the Top Gear challenge/test setters get their ideas! But back in the late forties there were different criteria and a lack of computer generated wind tunnel and testing facilities. However due to the imposition of petrol rationing the first actual event didn’t take place until 1952. The inaugural winner was Peter Binns in a Vauxhall 30/98. Not wanting a good idea to go to waste, between 1947 and 1952 the trophy was awarded for ‘outstanding service to the club’. It’s first winner, in 1948 was Cecil ‘Sam’ Clutton.

As the title suggests, this is a competition rather than a ‘race’, and has
the requirement that participating vehicles are ‘registered road cars’. In order to enforce this aspect the cars must be driven to the circuit, a unique and practical way of ensuring validity. The start point was Towcester race Course, just a few miles from Silverstone circuit. Although this might seem odd, it is in fact very apt. In the early days motorsport took its lead from the horse racing world, hence the terms such as paddock along with the starter using the union flag and finishing with a chequered one. Having made the journey from Towcester to Silverstone, the usual technical and safety scrutineering was required, but with an added twist. the famous ‘Suitcase’ test. In this each participating car must be able to carry two standardised (to VSCC specs) suitcases. Not something you’d see as a requisite for modern touring car races. Further requirements being; two fixed seats and an

acceptable hood. All factors that have been required since the very earliest days of this event.
Tricky Stuff! The competition consists of five sessions, the first four being acceleration/braking and handling via a slalom
course, culminating with high speed laps lasting 40 minutes on the 1.64 mile Silverstone National Circuit. Don’t forget we’re talking cars with big wheels, skinny cross ply tyres, small mechanical drum brakes (rear only for some), non-assisted March 2014 45

Add into to the mix; non-synchro gear boxes, ignition advance/retard via a lever somewhere, and the need on several cars to manually pressurise the fuel system and it begins to look a bit tricky. This is no modern Elk test for older cars. With the first four tests faithfully completed, or 46 www.cprmag.co.uk

Above anything else the VSCC runs very civilised meetings, and competitors don’t have to make do with the traditional race track. It’s a little more upmarket than that! With the crockery washed and put back into the hamper, it was time to get back on the circuit. If you’ve ever wondered what handles better a 1964 Triumph TR4 or a 1990 Sierra Cosworth.
Or which has the better straight-line speed a Bentley Speed Six of 1929 or a 2.0 litre 1998 Renault Clio, then this is where you can get the answer. Watching the cars whizzing down the Wellington straight and then braking heavily for Brooklands before leaning round Luffield, certainly showed how things had progressed. Maybe you’d be more interested in a comparison between two Alfa Romeo’s; a 6C Zagato

I suspect that the VSCC is keeping to tradition and is using a slide rule, a quill pen and several large sheets of paper to tabulate the various handicaps (another horse racing term) to get the final answer. We’ll publish a selection of these in future editions. What was confirmed though were the overall podium places. First place went to Fredric Wakeman in a 1928 Frazer Nash Super sports, with 2nd place falling to Charles Gillett in a 1928 Frazer Nash Saloon, and third place Patrick BlakeneyEdwards in another Frazer Nash this time a TT Replica. The circuit event produced some interesting sights. Although all raced for 40 minutes the number of laps each car was expected to complete was different. Ranging from 18 for the oldest ones to 36 for the most modern. Not to mention a test
of endurance for some of the older machinery. It was therefore a great testament to the engineering of the day and to the way the cars had been prepared that most stayed the full distance. Probably the biggest disappointed of the day was Simon Diffey’s 1963 Jaguar E-type. Having performed in a sterling manner all day, and in contention for a high placing, it converted to
steam power late in the circuit event when the head gasket went. The VSCC runs a huge number of events during the year with venues across the country. After purchasing a Rover P4 last November which had just completed the Peking to Paris event – the Winter Challenge seemed like a good way to test man and machine. Sarah Bennett-Baggs set off with her partner from Race Retro on their first rally together.

e picked up the Rover P4 for a bargain price at Anglia Car Auctions in November; it was a nailbiting experience bidding for the car and great exhilaration when we eventually won it!

We drove the car home from the auction and wrote out a list of checks and fixes to be done before it was ready for a new adventure. Having just been used in the Peking to Paris Rally, it was full of Mongolian desert sand, and
I mean it was everywhere... even inside the light bulbs! An engine top end check, compression test, new suspension, a brake upgrade and a good clean out later – we were ready to sign up for a rally together and we chose

the Winter Challenge, mainly because of the route, but also because it was out of the race season. We plotted the route together on the maps the weekend before the rally and I think we both started to realise this was going to be rather tricky. The roads were tiny, very uphill and VERY twisty! By lunch we were learning even the top crews were struggling with the navigation… it wasn’t just us. As regularity novices, no speedo or other navigation gadgets in a Rover P4, we also fell foul of the tricky routes, but
were never too far behind. I had a few complaints from the driver for wrong slotting us, but a brief spell of swapping driver and navigator roles soon stopped the complaints and when the driver was travel sick in the grass verge, I might have had a slightly smug grin on my face! By the end of day two it was clear that the Dutch pairing of Jan Ebus and Jan Berkhof in the Porsche 356 were going to

be event contenders but they were being closely chased by the Volvo 122S trio of Hughes, Dix and Neal, a great comeback after Sunday’s flood drama!

Day three was a long and tough one. The first competitors headed off into the hills from Bourges at 7.30am arriving late after a difficult night navigating twisty mountain roads in the fog, sleet and rain. By now Mike and I started to work together on the route, and we were united in our determination to get through the day. We experienced one comedy moment on arrival at a cross-roads three cars in front of us, all different colours and just like the Italian job all three went off in different directions, confirming once again how difficult the navigation was. Results remained unchanged at the end of the day but during the day Dermot Carnegie and Paul Bosdet made a brief appearance in 2nd position overall only to slide back to

10th after the night section. Remarkably navigating the mountain sections late at night was a lot of fun - just finding the regularity start and ends was a eureka moment for us in the Rover P4, and to be honest we just guessed the regularity average speeds!
Snow, Ice & Ditches! On day four competitors hit snow leaving Valence, driving hard up into Vercors and by mid morning it was clear that snow was hampering progress as the CRA crew had to reroute and cancel some of the higher regularities. Many competitors encountered difficulties or a brush with the scenery in deep drifts. The Rover P4 however, relished the snow, despite a brief exit of the road sideways when Mike was ‘testing the grip levels’! Finally we were overtaking Porsches and other competitors struggling for grip as we climbed the cols. We even

had our own HERO moment when a Triumph TR4 slipped into a snowy ditch just in front of us and we stopped to pull them out. The mighty Rover! Day four ended up with supper in Forcalquier before further mountain stages in the dark and rain followed by a trip down to St Raphael for the overnight stop. Just a few running repairs! (Sarah Bennett-Baggs) Walker and Sean Toohey in a 1973 Range Rover, Graham had a few problems along the way, the Range Rover misfiring from Day 2 and a mishap during the snow section when Dermott stopped in front of him in the Volvo PV544 but the Range Rover didn’t. We had great fun though, the now amalgamated HERO & CRA organisations mean there are plenty of events to choose from, varying in difficulty – we found the Winter Challenge very social and friendly and extremely well organised. We later found
out we had completed in one of the toughest events in navigation, road and weather conditions and that gives us a real sense of achievement. We will definitely be back with ‘Russell the Rover’ for more of the same but perhaps with a bit more power! Mallory Park...
Back In Business! Last year saw Mallory Park racing circuit teetering on the brink of closure after local residents forced court action over excessive noise levels. Now under new proprietors, the track is back in action and held an open day on March 1. Simon Hazeldine went along.
I
t’s fair to say that 2013 was a troubled one for Mallory park racing circuit in Leicestershire. Local residents started a campaign against the circuit claiming that noise levels at the track were excessive and causing a nuisance. Numerous complaints were sent to Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council who investigated and upheld the complains, taking the circuits operators - Mallory Park Motorsport Limited (MPML) - to court where they were eventually fined £26,000. Attractive Triumph TR4A on display at Mallory Park. council voted to restrict the number of noisy days the circuit could hold to just 92 per year, something that MPML said made the business “not financially viable.” This, combined with the fine imposed on the operators, led to the business being placed into administration and eventually it was liquidated last November. 64 www.cprmag.co.uk
The running of the circuit then reverted to the land owner, Titan Developments, who started seeking potential new operators for the track. Step forward Stuart Hicken and Eddie Roberts, otherwise known as Real Motorsport Limited. The pair are both former motorcycle racers and Stuart is the owner of the Buildbase
The celebrate taking over the circuit, the pair - or at least their company - staged an official re-opening with a ‘Meet the Team’ open day on 1 March. As you might expect, the event was very much geared towards motorcycles, but there were a few fourwheeled automotive treasures on show too. Perhaps the main contender for ‘star of the show’ was the 1982 Williams FW08 Formula1 car that was driven by Keke

Rosberg. This was the car that was designed by Patrick Head and debuted at the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix. An evolution of the FW07 that it replaced, the car was used by Finnish driver Keke Rosberg to win the 1982 World Drivers’ Championship. A later version of this car - the FW08C - had the distinction of being the first Formula One car ever driven by the late Ayrton Senna at Donington Park in July 1983. It happened after Senna badgered team boss Frank Williams for a test after being sat beside him on a long-haul flight. The Brazilian driver completed 40 laps and lapped the circuit faster than anyone else had managed in the car, including 1983 race drivers Rosberg and Jacques Laffite. However Williams were not able to offer Senna a
Ferrari track day experiences on offer. drive for 1984 as Rosberg and Laffite were under contract and the Brazilian signed to the Toleman team instead. Senna would not drive another Williams until his fateful liaison with the team in 1994. Another aging racer attracting
a lot of admiring glances was a 1929 Amilcar CGSs ‘Monoplace’ belonging to Clive Temple. Amilcars were built in Saint Dennis, France, between 1926 and 1929 and were powered by a 1,074cc four-cylinder engine producing March 2014 65

There was an interesting selection of historic rally cars on show. 35bhp. Clive’s car has an impressive history and spent much of its life in Argentina before it was acquired and shipped over to the UK. It originally sported a two-seater body with a staggered seating arrangement, but during its decommissioning the decision was made to fit it with a single-seater body. Clive’s car has taken part in numerous competitive racing events in recent years, such as the Brookland’s Double Twelve Sprint and several VSCC events.

There are going to be some changes at the circuit too, with the new operators keen too see it utilized as a community venue for all types of events. triathlons becoming part of the annual schedule at Mallory Park as the new team look to expand the ‘off-track’ activities that the circuit can host. Speaking about the challenges that lie ahead, Eddie Roberts said: “Obviously there have been noise issues with the track and we have to identify those. We have specialists coming in who will look at
ways to reduce the noise. It is a race track when all said and done, but we will do our utmost to make it work for everybody.” Around 8,000 people turned up for the open day, and now that it is out of the way the circuit’s 2014 diary can finally get under way with the first event being a motorcycle track day on March 15.

RM Auctions enjoyed a successful debut sale in Paris on February 5, with €17,701,680 worth of sales and 80 percent of all lots sold. The star of the night was the truly wonderful 1955 Jaguar D-Type, part of the Harburg Collection, which sold for €3,696,000, establishing a new world record for a D-Type at auction. Chassis XKD 520, which boasts an extensive early racing history, was the seventh production D-type made and was sold new to Australian, Bob Stillwell, who raced the car with great success in the 1956 and 1957 seasons, including the 1956 Bathurst 500. Unquestionably one of the best production D-Types in existence, this remarkable car presented collectors with an exceptionally rare opportunity. Another car from the Harburg Collection, and the second biggest seller of the night, was the awe-inspiring 1982 Porsche 956 Group C Sports-Prototype, chassis 004, which ran as a Works car at Le Mans finishing 3rd in ’82 driven by Haywood/Holbert/Barth, completing a historic podium clean sweep for the Porsche Works team that year. Another stunning Harburg car, the glorious 1955 Ferrari 750 Monza Spider, chassis 0498 M, boasting a remarkable, fully documented, race history, secured €1,960,000, rounding off the top three sellers of the auction. Not content with securing the top three sales of the night, another Harburg car, the delightful 1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS, also generated huge interest, not least because of its remarkable period racing history in the hands of well-known privateer racer and Works Frazer Nash driver, Dickie Stoop. Presented in immaculate condition, the car achieved an impressive €1,288,000.

Profumo Jaguar Helps Set Record Race Retro Sale Results A 1959 Jaguar XK150 Drophead Coupe, formerly owned by Dr Stephen Ward, the physician at the centre of the Profumo affair political scandal, was one of the stars of this year’s record breaking Race Retro sale. A frenzied bidding battle saw the car eventually sell for a premium inclusive total of £124,200, more than twice its pre-sale estimate. A host of other magnificent results saw Silverstone Auctions sell a massive 70 per cent of the road cars on offer, along with a remarkable further 13 competition cars, achieving total sales of £1.8 million - the highest auction figure ever achieved at the event. “We’re delighted to start our 2014 auction season with such a fantastic record breaking result,” comments Nick Whale, managing director, Silverstone Auctions. “We put together a really strong catalogue with a great mix of cars, and I’m delighted that we managed to achieve such excellent results for our vendors.” Indeed, such was the quantity of quality entries into the sale that, for the first time ever, Silverstone Auctions held the event over two days. Ford GT40 The Story Format: PAL DVD Running Time: 75 minutes Price: £12.99 Available From: www.dukevideo.com This isn’t a new DVD, in fact it was first released nearly ten years ago back in 2004, but as it the case with many ‘new’ DVDs, it first saw the light of day as an old VHS video cassette (remember those?) and has now been transformed into a modern digital format. That means that you can buy it on a DVD disk, or if you prefer you can just go straight for the ‘download’ option. As for the film itself, well, cars just don’t get much more iconic than the famous Ford GT40. The story of how it came to be is well documented, but of course it gets told again here. The car was designed specifically with one objective - to win at Le Mans - and the GT40 quickly became a winner, not only on the track, but also in the hearts of racing fans, car enthusiasts and the public alike. Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon secured the GT40’s first Le Mans victory in 1966 with GT40s also finishing in second and third place. It continued to take victories in the following three Le Mans, winning the Sports Car Championship in 1968 and becoming the first car to top 200 mph on the Mulsanne straight at Le Mans. The goal set by Henry Ford II was well and truly accomplished. This programme goes under the bonnet of a 20th century icon. It features archive and contemporary footage of the original GT40s with Tiff Needell putting two very different works cars through their paces. Just turn up the volume to hear the fabulous V8 engine roar as the on-board camera records Mr Needell nudge the speedo past 200mph – not bad for a 40 year old car! Bringing things up to more recent times, the programme also takes a look at the 2004 Ford GT - a car that looked like the older GT40 on the outside, but had all modern chassis and running

gear, and an interior that offered a small amount of comfort, unlike the original car! As with many of these automotive films, it is the way that the car is captured on the road and track that really makes it worth watching, and hearing that unrestrained V8 howling as it pushes the tacho needle ever closer to the redline is pure audio dynamite! If you like the Ford GT40, and let’s face it who doesn’t, you will certainly enjoy this film, and if you want to impress your kids and go all ‘techy’ and download it, you wont even need to leave the house to watch it!

ISBN: 9781903706503 Available From: www.veloce.co.uk Another excellent book from the pen (or keyboard!) of knowledgeable motoring writer Roger Williams is ‘MGB & MGB GT - Your Expert Guide to Problems & How to Fix Them.’ This was the first book in the rather American sounding ‘Auto Doc’ series; the ‘doc’ part being short for doctor. It is intended to be one of those useful troubleshooting guides that show you how to overcome some of the more common problems on the MGB and MGBGT. The author writes in a clear, easy to understand style and the text is accompanied by colour photographs that show many of the tasks in a ‘step-by-step’ sequence, similar to the hugely successful Haynes manuals. Among the topics covers in the book are engine and gearbox problems, overhauling the suspension, replacing road springs, the ignition system and just about anything else that can go wrong on the car. The author lists common faults as headings, for example: ‘Engine cranks normally and fires, but will not run’ and then investigate the problems and suggests potential causes and solutions. The best thing about this book though is it’s easy to follow format and the way it guides you through each job in easy to follow steps.
