Editorial It has been a pretty good summer so far here in the UK. The weather has (just about!) behaved itself, and there have been some amazing classic car and historic racing events to keep us entertained too. The Cholmondeley Pageant of Power was simply on another level, with superb track action from a wonderful variety of racing machines, aerial displays, powerboats, motorbikes and supercars, and a concert featuring Status Quo! Impressive stuff, and you can read all about it in this issue. More recently was the much anticipated Silverstone Classic. We will be running a full report on this event in the next issue, but suffice to say it was as good as it has always been. In fact, it could have been the best one yet, but sadly the weekend was marred by a tragic accident which claimed the life of historic racing stalwart, Denis Welch. It goes without saying that our thoughts are with his family and friends, but it was a stark reminder of just how dangerous motor racing really was just a few decades ago, and how we take for granted the massive advances in safety that modern cars and circuits must comply with. Now today’s historic racers face the same dangers that the racing drivers of yesteryear faced, and sometimes, there is a very heavy price to pay for that. Historic racing comes with historic dangers...and there is very little we can do about that. On a much happier note, we were delighted to hear that our resident tame(ish!) lady racing driver, Sarah BennettBaggs managed a podium finish at the epic Classic Le Mans. Along with her co-driver Mike Thorne, Sarah raced an 1955 Austin Healey 100M on the famous 8.5 mile road circuit, the same one as used in the famous Le Mans 24 Hour Race, and finished in third place in their class. It was a remarkable result as it was the first time that Sarah had ever driven at Le Mans and their little Healey had beaten off competition from cars like Jaguar D-types and Mercedes 300SL ‘Gullwings.’ You can read all about her eventful drive in this very issue, and it really is a brilliant read. Don’t miss it! As always, we hope you enjoy reading this issue of Classic, Performance & Retro! Drive safe!

British Classics Going Home
Jaguar Buys World’s Largest British Car Collection
In what can only be described as fantastic news for the British classic car world, Jaguar Land Rover has purchased the entire James Hull collection which is believed to be the largest privately held collection of British cars in the world. The collection includes 543 cars, along with a smaller assortment of pedal cars and associated memorabilia. Hull, who has been suffering from health problems, said he wanted the collection to stay together and remain in the UK and with Jaguar’s purchase, it would seem he has got his wish. Speaking after the sale, Hull said he was delighted that jaguar Land Rover had bought the collection and that he felt that the cars would be ‘going home.’ He also described Jaguar as his preferred bidder. Around 130 cars in the collection are Jaguars, one of which is a rare aluminium-bodied XK120, but the rest range from the humble Austin Mini right up to Rolls-Royce and Bentleys and everything in between! In the past the collection has been valued at around £100 million but the price paid by Jaguar land Rover has not been disclosed. www.jaguarheritage.com

Retro Boot Sale
Third London Classic Car Boot Sale Announced Following the success of the first two classic car boot sales held earlier this year, retro event specialists Vintage will stage a third sale on September 20-21. It will also see the popular event move from its previous home at to a new bigger location at London’s South Bank Centre to a new larger venue at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. This will allow a greater number of traders, and of course classic cars to attend, and the organisers say it will allow better access for visitors and traders alike. The venue is also next to Zaha Hadid’s eye catching London Aquatics Centre. Like the two previous sales, the September event will see a wide variety of products being sold, such as vintage fashion, records, antiques and other retro items. There will also be entertainment in the form of music performances, street theatre, and some rather tasty street cuisine will be on offer too. If you fancy taking part, there is still plenty of time, and the organisers are inviting anyone who owns a pre-1989 classic car or camper van who wants to trade from it to contact them. Don’t Cry For Me Argentina...
‘Evita’ Perón Limousine For Sale At Salon Prive A 1951 Cadillac Limousine that was once used by former Argentina President Juan Domingo and Eva Perón is one of the lots at Silverstone Auction’s Salon Prive sale in London on September 4. The car is being sold by its privateer owner and is expected to fetch somewhere in the region of £200,000 to 260,000. A great icon of popular culture as well as history, María Eva Duarte de Perón, will always be affectionately remembered as Evita. Her life story was most famously told in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Evita, as well as the 1996 film of the same name starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas. Eva’s rise from aspiring actress to political supremo and Spiritual Leader of Argentina began in 1944, in Buenos Aires, where she met Colonel Juan Perón. The couple were married in 1945 and Juan Perón was elected President of Argentina in 1946. During the couple’s time in office, Eva became a champion of the working class as well as women in Argentina, founding the nation’s first large-scale female political party, the Female Peronist Party and supporting low income families. The Cadillac served faithfully as the official state limousine of the Peron presidency and has been displayed at the Museo Evita for a number of years. There are many images of the President with the car and he and Eva in the rear seats en route to state functions. The owner has decided the time has come to part with this important treasure and the concours lawn of Salon Privé where the car will be shown and accompanying Silverstone Auctions sale is the chosen outlet. The car has recently arrived on UK shores and discovered within was a glorious jewel from one of Eva’s dresses which accompanies the sale of this car. The helpful staff of Museo Evita are very kindly trying to establish which item of clothing this jewel has come from. www.silverstoneauctions.com
King of Cool Car!
McQueen’s Ferrari 275GTB/4 For Sale Bidding is likely to go stratospheric when a 1967 Ferrari 275GTB/4 once owned by Hollywood screen legend Steve McQueen is due to be sold at at RM Auctions’ Monterey sale, taking place on August 16-17. The car is expected to fetch around $9m, but as with anything connected with McQueen, don’t be surprsied it goes way beyond that figure. The car’s history is as detailed as it is impressive. It was delivered when new to McQueen while he was filming Bullitt and The Thomas Crown Affair after he had crashed his NART Spyder. The car was supplied with Campagnolo alloy wheels and Nocciola (metallic gold) paint work. McQueen immediatly replaced the stock wheels with those from the crashed NART Spyder and he had the colour changed to a deep shade of burgandy, which was given the name of ‘Chianti Red’ by the bodyshop that was commissioned to do the work. www.gawsworthhall.com

Eggs & Jets!
Concept Car Collection Goes On Display In Atlanta, Georgia TIf you happen to be in the USA, or to be more precise, near Atlanta in Georgia, then you might want to check out the latest exhibition being held at the High Museum of Art. Titled ‘Dream Cars’, the display features some of the world’s most exciting classic concept cars and projects and explores the innovative designs that sparked ideas of future possibility and progress. . It examines the dream car through five themes: individual makers, the impact of styling, visionary designers, the design process, and the influence of automobile fairs. Among the cars on display are a 1934 Ford Model 40 Special Speedster, created at the request of Edsel Ford himself to satisfy his desire for a streamlined car based on some of the European designs that he had seen on a visit to the region. Another rather quirky machine is the 1942 ‘Electric Egg’ or l’Oeuf Electrique to give it its correct title. The Egg was created by French artist Paul Arzens and was one of the world’s first bubble cars. It was designed and built in Paris at the height of World War Two and if that isn’t amazing enough, it could also apparently travel up to 60 miles on a single charge nad had a top speed of 37mph thanks mainly to its lightweight aluminium body. A rather more striking ‘car’ is the 1953 General Motors Firebird XP-21 (pictured). The ‘jet fighter’ like machine was designed by Harley J Earl and it was the first gas turbine-powered car built and tested in the USA. Sadly, its high fuel consumption and exhaust temperature exceeding 1,000°F meant it would never be suitable for public roads. The exhibition runs until September 7; for more details see the website: www.high.org
Maserati Revival
Iconic Maserati 25F To Star At Goodwood Revival Like a number of other events this year, the Goodwood Revival will be celebrating Maserti’s centenary year with a sizeable track display and the largest gathering of Maserati 250Fs that the UK has seen. The 250F is one of the most iconic racing cars of all time, making its debut at the Argentine GP in 1954 and being driven by racing legends such as Roy Salvadori, Sir Stirling Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio. The Richmond Trophy race, which forms part of a packed race card at the Revival and features some extremely rare 2.5 Litre front-engined GP cars, will almost certainly include a number of Maserati 250Fs and is sure to be one of the highlights of what promises to be an excellent weekend. Grand Prix Parade
Sir Stirling Leads Double Celebration At the Classic Racing legend Stirling Moss OBE led two dazzling parades at the Silverstone Classic on July 27, to mark the 50th Grand Prix to be held at Silverstone and Maserati’s 100th anniversary. Silverstone staged its 50th Grand Prix a couple of weeks prior to the Classic, a race won by Lewis Hamilton, and to mark that magical milestone the largest collection of Grand Prix cars ever assembled – 84 in total – took to the famous Northamptonshire track. Moss led the parade in a Maserati 250F, and was joined at the front by David Brabham, son of three-time World Champion Jack who was also celebrated at this year’s Classic. The Australian passed away earlier this year and remains the only man to take the ultimate F1 title in a car bearing his own name, and fittingly David was driving a Brabham BT24 today. A quite incredible array of Grand Prix cars followed the two racing legends. These included several pre-WW2 machines from the Brooklands era right up to Lotuses and Williams from the more modern DFV era. The parade also featured the Talbot-Lago T26C that was entered into the first Silverstone Grand Prix for Lord Selsdon and the Cooper of inaugural BTCC champion Jack Sears who was back behind the wheel in 2014 more than 50 years after he first raced the car. As the glorious Grand Prix machinery pitted Sir Stirling continued in the 250F and was joined by a huge collection of Maseratis. The Italian manufacturer is the award-winning event’s official ‘Celebration Marque’ for 2014 and celebrating its first 100 years with a special parade of its finest road and competition cars. It was a fitting reunion for Moss, now aged 84, as he won two Grand Prix in the 250F back in 1956. Alfieri Maserati – son of Ernesto, one of the founding brothers – took to the track alongside Moss’ 250F, and the variety of Italian exotica on-track was quite astonishing. From the latest luxury Ghibli to rarely-seen Maserati motorcycles from the 1950s, every period in the manufacturer’s glittering history was represented on the iconic Silverstone Circuit. www.silverstoneclassic.com
Silverstone Accident
Fatal Accident Mars Silverstone Classic Denis Welch - historic racing veteran and founder of Denis Welch Motorsport - died following an accident in the Silverstone Classic’s second Jack Brabham Memorial Trophy race for pre-1966 Grand Prix cars. Welch, 69, was driving a 1960 Lotus 18 at the event and was an experienced racer and a popular figure at historic race meetings. The accident involved a number of cars on the opening lap of the race and happened at the Village/Loop section of the track. The organisers of the Silverstone Classic released a statement regarding the accident saying: “It is with great regret that we have to report that Denis Welch succumbed to his injuries in the circuit’s medical centre. The event organisers, the race organisation, and the circuit’s medical and emergency services, will all now be co-operating with the Police and the MSA, the UK official motor sport governing body, to conduct a full investigation. All those involved in the event offer sincere condolences to family and friends of Denis Welch at this very sad time.” The accident marred an otherwise excellent event and we will be running a full report in the next issue. www.silverstoneclassic.com

Stars And Cars Line Up For Sensational ‘Classic Nostalgia’ At Shelsley Walsh
July 19/20, saw a superb selection of cars assembled at Shelsley Walsh for the ‘Classic Nostalgia’ weekend with Peter James and Stewart Miller Insurance. The event is a vintage themed meeting held at the world’s oldest motor sport venue, where people are invited to wear suitable period costumes to add to the atmosphere. Cars of all shapes and sizes from many decades competed against the clock up the iconic track while family entertainment including singers, bands, barbeques and dancing girls performed in the Courtyard. The car parks areas were lined with cars from several clubs including Morgan and MG, while thousands more cherished machines provided a wonderful display all of their own lined up in the public car parks. F1 and BTCC television commentator Louise Goodman hosted a question and answer session with Sir Stirling Moss in the renovated courtyard area, where he spoke of the vast differences between modern drivers and cars and the highly enjoyable, totally acceptable and almost requisite ‘Playboy’ image required of Formula 1 racing in his day, also admitting to having two sets of scrapbooks recording his career, one set for motor racing and one for ‘Crumpet!’ On Classic Nostalgia itself, Sir Stirling said: ‘This is a terrific occasion where all sorts of truly rare and magnificent cars can be seen in their full glory and I am thrilled at the reception I have received here from old and younger fans alike and for the opportunity to be reunited with some of the important cars from my racing past.’ One lucky visitor was Catherine Ball, from Solihull, Birmingham, who bought a charity raffle ticket at the event and won herself a passenger ride up the hill in front of the vast crowds, being driven by Sir Stirling Moss in a multi million pound historic Ferrari 250 SWB, One hundred cars took part in a Concours de Elegance competition with the overall winner being Roy Powell, who had travelled from Teeside in his stunning Aston Martin DB2/4 Mk111, originally having had no intention to enter the competition, but ending up by driving home with the top accolade. Andrew Davis of the Midland Automobile Club Sports and Classics Section added: I feel the outstanding success of our 2014 Classic Nostalgia meeting demonstrates our achievement in providing much broader family appeal to add to the traditional and established motor sport excitement, which this year also included a spectacular aerobatics display by a period Pitts Special biplane. ‘With more music and dance performances in the Courtyard and extra family entertainment, combined with the serious competition for classic cars both on track and in the Concours arena, I believe it all added up to create a truly exceptional day.” www.shelsley-walsh.co.uk

MG Car Club Opens ‘MG Garden’ In Abingdon The evening of July 17, saw the much anticipated opening of the MG Garden on Ock Street, Abingdon. The MG Garden has been a long running project between the MG Car Club and Abingdon Town Council, with the aim of documenting the history of MG in Abingdon and the impact the factory had on the town. Members of Abingdon Town Council and the MG Car Club gathered in the garden for an opening ceremony led by Simon Pedrazzini and the Mayor of Abingdon-on-Thames, Councillor Angela Lawrence. Three classic MGs - an MGBGT, an MGB Roadster and an MG Midget 1275 - built in the former factory just around the corner from the garden, were on display and acted as great props for the ribbon cutting. MG Car Club General Manager Julian White said: “It’s fantastic to see so many people gathered here for this opening ceremony. This has been a real community project from the start, with help from Abingdon residents, local historians and Car Club members. It’s very rewarding to see the garden being used and enjoyed, especially on such a wonderful evening.” As well as seating arrangements and a paved MG feature piece, the MG Garden includes seven display boards, detailing the history of MG in Abingdon from the factory opening in 1929, through to its closure in 1980. Funding for the boards was provided by sponsors including Frontline Developments, Moss Europe, Zircotec, British Motor Heritage and Old Speckled Hen. During the peak of car production the factory employed 1,300 workers and built roughly 1,000 cars a week. The MG Car Club is now working towards installing a commemorative plaque on the former home of Cecil Kimber, the man behind the MG Car Company. .www.mgcc.co.uk

indication of how we fair in our grid. The car was also not running perfectly, the long high speed straights were playing havoc with the carbs, which couldn’t keep up with the fuel and air demand at around 150 MPH causing a constant flutter or mis-fire at the top end! Night qualifying was only 35 minutes just enough time to do two laps each; my aim was to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy it. The Healey has good lights and a lot of the circuit is well lit, so seeing in the dark is not the major issue I feared. Stepping Back In Time
I think I will always remember this session; we were driving four abreast down the Mulsanne straight, I had a Jaguar D-type on one side, with a Gullwing and Porsche 356 on the other, the almost 22 www.cprmag.co.uk

deafening sound of engines on full tilt in stereo, the road ahead lit up by all the headlights. It was an incredible moment, just like stepping back into the 50’s. After night qualifying we were positioned 14th overall in our grid of 78. But with the misfire still not sorted the JME Healey team had a long night ahead to find the problem whilst Mike and I retired to the motorhome to get some brief sleep.
Above: The cars make their way through a ‘throng of bodies’ to get to the track for the race. Below: It’s challenging enough driving at Le Mans when it’s dry, but when it rains the driving conditions change rapidly.
Tension Building
Our first Le Mans start race was late Saturday afternoon so we had nearly all day Saturday to continue working on the car, the JME boys were confident they had found the issues and could fix them but August 2014 23

it was impossible to test the car amidst the 150,000 spectators descending on Le Mans getting the car in or out of the circuit was out of the question. All we could do was hope that the problem was fixed. Race time came round pretty fast, and in each tented Paddock you can feel the tension build-up and the atmosphere change in the lead up to race time. Mike was going to do the traditional Le Mans start, but I rode in the car with him out to the collecting area which involved following marshals riding quad bikes blowing whistles to clear a path through the throng of bodies pushing to see the cars up close. Traditional Start
The traditional Le Mans ‘ear of corn’ start involves lining the cars up again the pit wall, with the drivers waiting on the other side. There’s a huge build-up by the commentator as he introduced a French sprinter who dropped the starting flag as we watched some 78 men attempt to sprint across the
road, leap into their cars and drive off. Mike was the second car away, and it is safer to leave your belts and be away fast than get caught up in the traffic. The cars do half a warm-up lap before they are gridded up once again for a rolling start. The first Heat went well. We both enjoyed some dry running and finally I felt like I was getting the hang of the circuit. The Healey was running exceptionally well, all sign of the previous fluttering was fixed by the JME boys and we were reaching speeds of around 153 mph down the Mulsanne straight. It felt a little light and floaty but it was stable under braking and I finally broke the six minute lap time barrier – so I was happy! Heat 1 was won by champion pro-driver Alex Buncombe at the wheel of the ex Fangio C-Type Jaguar and we finished 13th. Our next session was at 3am – we retreated to the crazy circus Houx Campsite for supper and a brief couple of hours kip before our night session. August 2014 25
When it rains at Le Mans... things get scary! Let The Fun Begin! I am not sure I really went to sleep, when plateau 6 are out (1972 – 1979) you can hear and feel the roar of sheer power when they circulate; even from the relative short distance of the campsite it is an awesome sound. Worse, we were woken in early hours by the not so gentle pitter patter of rain on the motorhome roof; I remember thinking “So this is where the fun starts, its dark, and now it’s going to be wet. “ At 1am a monster sports prototype car rumbled past the motorhome. Time to get up, race suit on and get down to the Paddock. It may as well be day-time there are hundreds of people about. The paddock is alive with drivers and mechanics and the sound of copper hammers crashing. Heat 2, our night session was the best bit for me, the start 26 www.cprmag.co.uk
this time just a normal rolling start in our finishing positions from the previous heat. One full 13km rolling lap and then off you go. I did the start and the rain reappeared on the rolling lap. I took a cautious approach to the first few corners in the Dunlop curves. Two or three cars overtook me off the start, immediately fell off on the slippery cambered corners of the Dunlop curves and I retook the places but had to take evasive action to avoid the spinners. The first few laps were very exciting side by side racing action, tip toeing past cars trying to find the limits of the grip in the dark. A Porsche 356 was spinning on the spot when I arrived at Arnage on the first lap, but my previous Porsche experience has taught me it was going to suddenly find some grip and shoot into my path, so I hesitated off the
throttle and sure enough it dived into my path. I leapt onto everything, ground to a halt inches from his door stalling the car in the process. The Porsche also stalled and was now sat alongside me. We both hit the restart button and set-off in a drag race style standing start, but we both lost places although not pieces of car! After the hand-over, Mike pressed on into the wet night to finish 8th overall, the slippery track claimed a number of victims and drivers began to slow down, we also achieved the fastest time of the night giving us an amazing grid position of 4th for Sundays third and final heat. Rain, Rain & More Rain
After another couple of hours patchy non-sleep interrupted by torrential rain drumming on the motorhome roof and

punctuated by the roar of a new plateau taking their rolling start, we were back in the Paddock for our final race. Looking at the looming black clouds it was decided I should start in the dry and hand over to Mike, but we never got any dry running. Sitting on the grid the heavens opening to torrents of rain. The Jaguar C-Types on the front row of the grid were holding umbrellas to shield themselves. We had a roof, behind us on the grid I was flanked by two rather meaningful looking matt silver Mercedes Gullwings. There are times to get out and mingle on the grid, frankly this was not one of them. The rain was still coming down in torrents when the flag was waved and we were all sent out onto the grid. The race was to start under safety
car caution which means no overtaking and maintaining formation – A great result for me given I have two German bogies on my tail! Lakes were appearing at the entrance to the Playstation chicane, and rivers starting to stream across the circuit. Thankful at least for my leaky roof, we ploughed on for yet another safety car lap, the Healey starting to aquaplane in places. Seeing the pit window open on my next circuit, I neatly left the safety car train to follow race leader Alex Buncombe into the pits, to hand over to Mike. With the rain a little eased this proved great timing, leaving Mike in a good position to pick his way through the field quickly getting back up into 8th position, then 3rd when all the pit stops had been completed. As the final
lap commenced race leader Alex Buncombe vanished having made contact with a competitor at Arnage, leaving the flag man confused and the cars circulated for one more lap. Podium Finish! Meanwhile Mike fought hard to catch and overtake the no 2 Jaguar D-Type of Carlos Monterverde to take the chequered flag in first position overall…. A ‘Le Mans WIN’ for the Healey! The commentator and pit crew (me included) were astounded, the driver (Mike) completely unaware of his euphoric moment. However, the French timing crew decided to resolve their own mistimed chequered flag mistake and rewound the results by one lap to leave us in a printed 2nd position August 2014 27

Mike, Sarah and the JME crew. for the race. Tres French! However, this still left us third overall in Plateau 2 out of 78 cars. Not a bad result for a genuinely amateur team against some of the best prepared and driven historic cars in the world! A podium at Le Mans was not something we had not even dreamed possible. But there we were standing on the Podium at Le Mans spraying champagne, holding a shiny silver cup alongside the overall Plateau winners, British front running crew of Finbugh and Newall. What a day and night it had been! 28 www.cprmag.co.uk
On reflection, we had our share of luck. Fate and the weather played an important role - but it was nonetheless a very solid and positive drive in the nimble Healey, which ran faultlessly against the monster Jaguars, Maseratis and Mercedes. If it hadn’t been so wet, it could have been a completely difference outcome. Whatever! I still feel very lucky to have experienced it, to have driven the circuit, the highs and lows, the lack of sleep, the speed and fear, the dark and the wet… and enjoyed a brilliant result to boot. Thank You Le Mans!

And tasted all the better for knowing I didn’t have to drive afterwards. The one that means variously; I don’t know, I don’t care, it’s not my problem, etc. Eventually we decided to head for one of the campsites, park

This then reminded me that this wasn’t a UK race meeting and that things here we’re ‘different’. That equally delightful mixture of the beautiful, exquisite and August 2014 31

Despite the extreme’s of weather, the knowledgeable and enthusiastic crowd dispersed, some in classic cars of their own, others more mundane, but all probably thinking that one day…if only… All having enjoyed a weekend of superior classic races. On reflection, despite the tribulations of the weekend, it had been a good experience. And as I watched the

Even those who’d remembered to pack the instructions and were reading them were having difficulties. From where I sat it seemed to be like putting a recalcitrant octopus into a small shopping bag. Needless to say colourful words in a
variety of European languages resulted. But with success came an inner satisfaction of having got it right. And that really summed up the event for me. Despite the tribulations and frustrations, inclement and often vindictive weather, it had been right. Classic Le Mans is one of those ‘must see’ events, so if you haven’t been yet, add it to your ‘to do’ list and head over next year. Don’t miss it!

year the event exceeded all expectations. Not only did it have all the usual cars, planes, power boats, fireworks and a classical concert; this year saw the addition of a Friday night rock concert with the

is the beauty of this event. Some people refer to it as ‘Goodwood North’ but in truth, CPoP is more intimate and less corporate than the ‘Festival of Speed’ which it is no doubt based on. It’s more ‘handson’ and you feel like part of the show rather than a mere onlooker. A Few Omissions As with previous years, the format saw all the assembled cars and motorcycles
compete for the honour of being the fastest round the Cholmondeley track, or at least the quickest in their class. The selection of cars taking part was immensely impressive, but if I am being brutally honest, perhaps not as impressive as last year. There were a few omissions this year, such as the awesome machines like ‘Brutus’ from the Sinsheim Museum in Germany, and even CPoP regular Chris Williams seemed to have brought fewer cars than he usually does, but overall it didn’t detract too much. The track action was split into seven classes for the cars, and two for the motorcycles and ran from 9am until 6pm and the honour of being this year’s featured marque went to Maserati which is celebrating its 100th anniversary throughout 2014.

Pre-War Racers
Unsurprisingly, the number of spectators lining the course seemed to grow depending on what cars were on the track at the time, with the ‘Classic Pre-War’ cars, and the ‘Historic F1 & Single Seater’ machines easily proving to be the most popular. The previously mentioned Chris Williams entertained the onlookers with a spirited drive in his 1929 Napier Bentley, while his daughter Rachel also got in on the act by competing in the 1922 Hardy Special and the 1923 Austin Blackburn Special. Alongside them in the ‘Classic Pre-War’ Class were machines like Jolyon Harrison’s 1928 Bentley 3/8 which stormed around the track, and the super rare 1926 Vauxhall OE Type 30/98 Velox which usually resides in Vauxhall’s own car museum.

Mostly Dry The weather at Cholmondeley has always been challenging to say the least. In fact I think I am right in saying that it has in fact rained on the show every year it has been held, and this year was no exception. Thankfully we were spared the swamp-like 40 www.cprmag.co.uk
scenes from 2012 and while I was there on the Friday and Saturday it remained mostly dry, apart from a brief shower during the evening concert. Oh the joys of an English summer! It’s Showtime! As already mentioned, the Friday concert was easily one
of the highlights of the event, especially if you have a taste for guitar-based rock music. Lets face it; if you like loud fast cars, chances are that you’ll like loud fast music too. The show was kicked off by Essex-based band ‘Fifty-Four Plates’ who despite their odd name were actually pretty good playing their own unique

brand of ‘folk rock.’ They were followed by RPJ, otherwise known as the Rick Parfitt Junior band. The RPJ lineup featured some incredibly talented musicians who have played with some of the biggest names in the music business, the set consisted entirely of cover songs which I found disappointing. It would
have been great to hear some original stuff, but the ladies in the audience seemed to enjoy it. The next band was something of a revelation. Toseland is a band fronted by exWorld Superbike Champion James Toseland, who turned to music after a series of accidents ended his racing
career. Toseland (the man) wouldn’t look out of place in ‘Take That’ or any other ‘boyband’ for that matter, so it was both pleasing and surprising to hear him belting out some fexcellent heavy rock songs. Stand out moments were tracks off the band’s new album ‘Renegade’ like ‘Singer in a Band,’ ‘Life is Beautiful,’ August 2014 41

gone, but his vocals are as strong as ever, and Rick Parfitt still has that wonderful bluesy rock n’ roll sound that is the signature for all Quo songs. Opening with one of their biggest hits ‘Caroline’ set the tone from the start with all the greatest hits getting an airing. Songs like; ‘Rain,’ ‘Paper Plane,’ ‘Down Down,’ ‘Whatever You Want’ and ‘Wild Side of Life’ all received rapturous applause from the sizable audience. By the time they wrapped it all up with ‘Rocking all over the World’ and a rendition of the Chuck Berry classic ‘Johnny B Goode’ Cholmondeley was seriously bouncing. What a show! While the selection of cars might not have been as strong as in previous years, I got the feeling that this year saw the Pageant of Power really ‘come of age.’ The slick organisation, the impressive machinery and the fantastic concert just combined to make this one of those ‘do not miss’ events. Of course, now the organisers have the massive headache of trying to build an even more impressive concert line up for next year’s show. Maybe give Aerosmith a call, or the Rolling Stones perhaps? Either way, I plan to be there. Make sure you don’t miss it! 44 www.cprmag.co.uk

Though the field majored on cars from the 1920s, including several from the year of the famous French win in 1924, it was headed by the spectacular and hugely colourful 2005-vintage Continental GT of Simon Worthington. In a damp qualifying session, Worthington used the modern car’s capabilities to qualify a whopping 12s ahead of the pre-war

cars of Ewen Getley, Clive Morley, Charles Maclean and Gerard McCosh. True to expectations, Worthington shot away as soon as the lights went out and rushed clear at a rate of up to 10-seconds a lap. Even a brief mid-race safety car, after the MKVI Special of Vivian Bush slithered into the Redgate gravel, Worthington was able to power away again as modern four-wheel drive and electronic systems kept the GT firmly
planted. “It did let go once or twice,” said Worthington. “That’s the car’s first race in the wet and it’s a shame there’s nothing else to race against.” In the wake of the mighty GT, a splendid battle raged for second place among a quartet of classic Bentleys as Getley headed Morley, Paul Forty and McCosh. In the opening stages of the 45-minute pit-stop race, Patrick Gormley cut the early pace in Kearney’s car while Wayne Marrs held second in his 355 with the similar car of Nigel Jenkins on his tail and Lee Moulden (in Laverty’s car) making it a fabulous quartet of 355 Challenges at the head of the pack. It was Jenkins who was really on the attack and he nipped ahead of Marrs after five laps as more light rain started to fall. Jenkins then went after Gormley and pulled the gap back to under a second as the safety car emerged just as the pit window opened at 15 minutes. Lap-by-lap Foster pressed home his advantage on the dry track and was within a second of Thorne with two laps to go. Into the final lap it seemed inevitable that Foster would snatch second, but he caught a backmarker at Coppice on the final lap and lost considerable momentum as Thorne held 54 www.cprmag.co.uk
his second place. “That was very hard work,” admitted Thorne. “It was okay in the damp,” he added of the contest against the TR4s. Foster, meanwhile, completed the podium and was left to rue the slower car on the final lap. “It wasn’t his fault but I had to stand on the anchors,” said Foster. Linley only just held off the TVR Grantura of Robert Cull for fourth as David Beresford (MGB) claimed sixth and John Andon

The St John Horsfall Memorial Trophy race brought the pre-War Aston Martins to the grid with David Freeman taking a commanding victory in his Speed model. fast-starting Peter Dubsky nipped ahead initially in his 15/98 two-seater. But Freeman was able to work ahead as Dubsky chased and there was little in it until late in the race when Dubsky had a moment at the chicane and lost ground. “It went well,” said Freeman. “I’ve only just put it back together again,” said the winner. “You did a good job,” said Dubsky as they shook hands post-race, with the well-
travelled Austrian making the journey worthwhile again with a strong result. Just as pleased was Kelvin Robinson who took his first podium finish in his Speed and was chuffed to have kept the leaders in sight for much of the race. However, closing on Robinson at the flag was Stephen Archer in his loaned Ulster LM15. He came through from the tail of the grid to claim fourth in the car that raced at Le Mans exactly 80 years ago.
Archer also claimed victory in the handicap results. James Morley headed father Clive in qualifying for the Pre-War Team Challenge as the pair of Bentleys narrowly led the Laguna LG45 of Nick Hine on a very wet track, but in the dry race the family hierarchy was re-established as Clive powered to victory in his well-raced Bentley. Freeman then mounted a relentless chase of Morley senior and was never far away: in fact, Freeman even stole briefly ahead mid-race before Morley re-asserted his authority. “You made me work for that,” said Morley at the finish as Freeman related a last lap moment that took him through the gravel at the chicane. Freeman still claimed second place to round out a very good day’s sport. “I saw the gap and then all of a sudden he was there,” said Morley of his rival’s mid-race pressure. “It was brilliant fun: absolutely lovely,” added Morley. Peter Dubsky made it two Aston Martins on the podium by moving through to third having 56 www.cprmag.co.uk

Woolley never allowed himself to cruise, however, and got quicker and quicker as the race developed. “It was not so nice in the wet in qualifying, but it was much better in the race,” said Woolley. “I was pushing myself against the track and trying to have a test ready for the Silverstone Classic next month.” The Coventry Climax-powered Cooper run only sixth in the made an impressive sight early laps. GAZ Telescopic Dampers for Triumph TR2-4 Available from: GAZ Prices from: £55.03 plus VAT See: www.gazshocks.com
If you are lucky enough to own one of the earlier Triumph TR sports cars TR 2-4, them you might find that the ride quality can be a little harsh. Most of that is down to the road springs, which were designed for performance - not comfort, but the antiquated design of the dampers doesn’t help. Now there is an alternative, for the front end at least, as suspension specialist Gaz has introduced some fully adjustable telescopic dampers which can be set according to the owners’ preference. The variable bump and rebound rates can be adjusted to suit the most conditions and driving style by means of an easily accessible knob on the side of the units. This means that they do not need to be removed from the car to be adjusted, which makes it a quick and easy job. They can be set up for general road use but can also be used for occasional track, slalom and sprint use. They can even be set up for serious racing use if you wish. The dampers look smart too, with a zinc plated body and protective plastic sleeve to keep them looking good and working well long into the future. can set the dampers up for general road use and they will also be suitable for occasional track slalom and sprint use. Classic Mini Brake Disc & Pad Kit Available from: Mini Spares Prices from: £29.32 inc VAT See: www.minispares.com
The brake system is probably the most vital set of parts on the car, but it is also often one of the most neglected. Neglect it, and you might not live to regret it! The good news is that classic Mini owners can now replace their worn front discs and pads using quality parts at a very cost effective price. Hertfordshire-based Mini Spares is offering a complete front disc and pad set for just £29.32 including VAT! The kit includes 8.4” diameter non-vented discs while the pads are Ultimax Road Pads, which Mini Spares consider to be the best option for regular road use Minis. Silverstone Auctions achieved its highest ever total sales value, more than £5million, and secured some world record prices in its two day sale at the Silverstone Classic, where it achieved a sales rate of 85%. Wowing the crowds, a 1979 Ferrari 308 GTS in wonderful condition was successfully hammered away for a premium inclusive £82,225, more than £50,000 over its lower estimate and a world record for the model. Not to be outdone, a 1989 Ferrari 328 GTS sold for a premium inclusive £77,050, breaking another world record. More modern Ferraris also proved popular, with a 1996 Ferrari 456 GT selling for £49,450, nearly double its lower estimate. However, it wasn’t just Ferraris that caught the attention of the crowds at the sale, which took place at the Wing, Silverstone. Topping the bill was a 1950 Healey Silverstone which sold for a total of £212,750, while a 1996 Jaguar XJ220, aptly presented in Silverstone Green, sold for £187,450, more than £17,000 over its upper estimate. A rare and highly stylish 1953 Bristol 403 Saloon also raced past its estimate, eventually selling for £62,100. ultra rare 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB/C with coachwork by Scaglietti. Chassis 09067 is the ninth of only twelve such cars produced and perhaps the most original example of its kind, therefore presenting a very rare opportunity indeed. The hammer finally fell at a record-breaking €5,712,000, making it comfortably the most valuable fixed-head Ferrari 275 ever sold at auction. In an evening which once again saw the Ferrari marque dominate and secure six of the top ten prices paid, it was the gorgeous 1959 Ferrari 250 GT Pininfarina Series I Cabriolet, chassis 1181 GT, that generated the second highest bid of the evening, securing €4,704,000 to become the most valuable of its model ever sold at auction. Rounding off the top three sellers was the 1967 Ferrari 330 GTS, chassis 10719, one of ninety-nine built and a multiple concours winner, which found a new home for €2,128,000. Max Girardo, Managing Director of RM Auctions, Europe, said: “It’s not often I’m lost for words, but I am simply stunned by what we have achieved tonight in Monaco. From a results perspective, this has been our biggest ever European sale and the 93 percent sell through figure is testament to the diversity and depth of quality that we had on offer. The atmosphere and energy was incredible right through to the final lot and it’s a particular delight that we have attracted so many enthusiastic new bidders from all around the world.” Besides the top selling Ferrari trio, the selection of cars on offer included a large number of sportsracing and single-seater grand prix cars. Among the feature lots was the immaculate, race-ready 1966 Brabham-Repco BT20 Formula One car, a significant racer which had been victorious at the 1967 Monaco
Grand Prix in the hands of Denny Hulme during his championship-winning year. Boasting that kind of provenance, it was particularly satisfying to see the car achieve €1,092,000, a stunning sum which smashed its pre-sale high estimate of €720,000. This 1972 Fiat Giannini 650 NP sold for an amazing €33.600.
Very pretty 1958 Jaguar XK150 3.4 Roadster sold for €89.600.
1968 Toyota 2000GT changed hands for €728.000.

The Best Of MG Format: PAL DVD Running Time: 1hour 34 minutes Price: £19.99 Available From: www.motorfilms.com There is a huge variety of videos and DVDs currently available which showcase the cars once built by Abingdon-based MG Car Company Ltd, but few, if any of these feature films that were actually put together by the manufacturer of these famous British sportscars. However, this offering from Motorfilms boasts a compilation of classic original promotional films from the MG and BMC archives which have been re-mastered for DVD. The disc boasts a total of four individual films, starting off with the longest one which is ‘MGB: The Story of the Best Selling MG Sports Car.’ This 50 minute long film features masses of archive footage, much of which has never been seen before, along with interviews from key people of the era to explore the myths, legends and facts behind its design, production and competition history. John Thornley, the legendary ‘gaffer’; Don Hayter, its gifted designer; and Stuart Turner, manager of the successful competitions team; all speak freely of the camaraderie and the secrets of those times, and explain why the MGB was the most successful MG sports car ever built, quickly achieving classic status by epitomising the Britishness and winning hearts throughout the world. More than 500,000 were sold between its conception in 1962 and the eventual closure of the famous Abingdon factory, where it was built, in 1980. The next film on the DVD is ‘Safety Fast’ which was made in 1932 and runs for 14 minutes. This quality black and white silent film made by the Morris Cine Department follows a young couple on their tour of the factory before collecting their new car. It features rare period footage of the MG works and personnel and offers a delightful glimpse behind the scenes of the pre-war MG factory. Changing up a gear, the next short film is ‘Exhibit B801’ which was shot in 1950 and is 17 minutes long. It tells the story of Goldie Gardner’s record breaking car EX135 from display at the Festival of Britain to the land speed record runs on the

Bonneville Salt Flats in the USA. The film includes actual footage of the record breaking attempts using a standard MG TD. Last, and by no means least, is a short promo-film called ‘Magic Carpet.’ This 1962 made movie runs for just 10 minutes and was originally made as part of MG’s marketing campaign in the USA. The film starts off by showing a young couple test driving their new MG 1100 on a visit to the UK. On the way the call in at Goodwood racing circuit where Graham Hill just happens to be on hand for a test drive. Overall this DVD offers a wonderful insight into how MG produced, marketed and sold its cars at the time of their production and with some of the footage getting its first ever public exposure, this collection is bound to be of interest to any MG enthusiast. Well worth a look!

Volkswagen Bay Transporter Restoration Manual Author: Fletcher Gillett Price: £30.00 Format: Hardback. ISBN: 9780857332455 Available From: www.haynes.co.uk
It’s been nearly fifty years since the ‘Summer of Love’, but a new generation of people is being given the chance to recreate those ‘hippie days’ with this new book from Haynes Manuals. The Volkswagen Bay Transporter Restoration Manual by Fletcher Gillett shows how you can bring one of the most lpopular camper vans of all time back to life. Finding favour with the ‘free-spirited’ individuals all over the world, the VW Bay Transporter was as recognisable in the 1960s and 70s as bell-bottoms, psychedelic rock and free love. Its versatility and affordability gave anyone looking to live an alternative lifestyle on a budget the perfect solution. First introduced in 1967, the Bay is now one of the most iconic vehicles on the road. In production until 1979, it was the successor to the legendary ‘split-screen’ Transporter, and is the second of five generations of van so far given the Transporter name. Today, the ‘Bay’ provides a rare opportunity to own a classic vehicle which is practical, versatile and, if looked after, will hold its value. Even the poorest, rustiest example of the ‘Bay’ can fetch significant money and, as imports from drier countries continue to appear on British roads, so the case for restoring one of these hugely popular vehicles becomes increasingly attractive. Using the trusted Haynes Manual step-by-step approach, this all-colour manual follows the complete restoration of a Devon camper from beginning to end, and provides expert advice on the problems likely to be encountered when working on vehicles that have seen over 35 years of use and, in Britain, as many years of rain, salt and mud. Covering everything from what to look for when buying a suitable project van, to final painting options, the down-to-earth text, accompanied by more than 900 photographs and helpful diagrams, makes this the only guide to restoring (or part restoring) a Bay Transporter you will ever need. A must have book for any ‘Bay’ owner. Francis Howe: Motor Man par Excellence Author: Tim May Price: £65.00 Format: Hardback. ISBN: 978099286000 Available From: www.motorbooks.co.uk
‘Francis Howe – Motor Man par Excellence’ is the first biography of Francis, Earl Howe (1884-1964), a man who was a major figure in the pre-war and post-war motor racing and motoring world. Howe had a distinguished motor racing career pre-war, competing at the highest level in Grands Prix and at Le Mans. During his racing career he competed in a wide variety of cars, including Mercedes, Bugatti. Alfa Romeo. Maserati and ERA. After the war he rose to prominence in the organisational side of British motor racing until his death in 1964. Francis Howe was a nobleman, a politician, a naval officer, a grand prix racing driver and a motor racing administrator. In this comprehensive biography Tim May covers all aspects of Howe’s fascinating life. He outlines Howe’s family background and how it shaped his character and interests. There are chapters on his naval service and on his political career, both as a Member of Parliament and in the House of Lords. A major part of the book is devoted to Howe’s motor racing career, with chapters on sports car racing, grand prix racing, voiturette racing and his later years as an administrator of the sport. It includes a comprehensive list of Howe’s racing appearances. The book is illustrated with over 200 photographs, mostly never before published. It provides a fascinating glimpse into the life of a man who helped forge motoring as we know it today and is a fantastic ‘coffee-table’ book for any historic racing enthusiast.

Be Wise When You Advertise! When you advertise always take steps to guard against identity fraud. Do not place personal details in your adverts. If you are selling a car, remember that there are a lot of unscrupulous people out there who will use every trick in the book to part you from your car or your money. Take sensible precautions. If you are buying a car; make sure you check it thoroughly. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is! Never meet a vendor on the street or at service stations.
