Split Welcome to Split! Welcome to Split, central city in Dalmatia. Split is a city in Croatia, on the eastern shore of the Adriatic sea, centred on the Roman Palace of the Emperor Diocletian. It is the second largest city of Croatia, and the largest of the Dalmatian cities. As Croatia joined the EU , more airlines than ever are scheduling flights to the Dalmatian capital, and no wonder with the range of fabulous tourism attractions on offer. Split is a busy port, with an international airport and regular ferry service. It is the gateway to Dalmatian jewels such as Brač, Hvar and Vis, also to the north and south Adriatic, Italy and Greece. If you are thinking about history, immerse yourself in 1700 years of history of palace of a Roman Emperor. Many of Split's historical and cultural buildings can be found within the walls of Diocletian's Palace. In addition, numerous museums, the National Theatre, and old churches and other archeological sites in the Split region make it an important cultural attraction. Split has a lot of beaches. Your choices of entry into the pristine Adriatic are enviable. Facts and Figures Location:

Getting to By Air Split Airport is located 24 km from the centre of Split. Split International Airport provides direct line to Split which will take you to the main bus station located in the very center of the city, right next to the city harbour and railway station. More information on a bus schedule can be found at www.plesoprijevoz.hr . Price of the oneway ticket is 30 kn (3, 80 â‚Ź) . Public Transport: Close to Split Airport there is a bus stop of lines No. 37 (Split-Trogir; TrogirSplit) and No. 38 (SplitAirport-Kastel Stari-Split; Split-Kastel Stari-Split Airport). By Train The Main Railway Station is located in the city center ( Obala kneza Domagoja 9 ) , just a few minutes walk from the old town.
By Bus The Central Bus Station is located next to the railway station at Obala kneza Domagoja 12.

By Boat Ferries run three times a week across the Adriatic to and from Ancona and Pescara (Italy) . There is also a large ferry that runs twice a week up and down the coast between Dubrovnik and Rijeka , stopping off at a couple of islands along the way. Split is the main hub for local boats and hydrofoils in Central Dalmatia. Several a day run to and from Brač, Šolta, Hvar, Vis, Korčula and Lastovo .

Transportation SPLIT PUBLIC TRANSPORT (PROMET SPLIT) The Promet Split ticket system uses only the following type of ticket: single tickets. Tickets can be bought in the vehicle or in the kiosks of the Promet Split. Price of the ticket bought in the vehicle is 11 kn (1.45 €) . Price of the ticket bought in the kiosk is 9 kn (1.18 €). Student discount ISIC The best way to ensure your student status is accepted is by getting an ISIC card. The International Student Identity Card (ISIC) is the only internationally-recognized proof of fulltime student status issued in over 130 countries. It is endorsed by organizations such as UNESCO, the European Council on Culture and the Andean Community of Nations. The card is recognized by universities, academic institutions, student organizations, national governments and ministries of education around the world. As well as being able to prove your student status internationally it allows you access over 42,000 exclusive benefits around the world.

Food Student restaurants (“Menza“) There are several student restaurants in the city that offer meals at lower prices. To be able to get student prices you will need a local student card which we will provide for you. You will most likely use student restaurant at the dormitory where you will be staying (Spinutska 37).
Supermarkets and bakeries Most of the supermarkets in Split open at 7 in the morning and close between 20 and 22 in the evening on workdays. Most places are opened all day on Saturdays and in the morning on Sundays. Similarly applies to the bakeries. In the city centre, some are also opened all day on Sundays and some work 24/7 such as Prerada ( Domovinskog rata 20a ) and Kod Mate ( Dubrovačka ulica 8 ) .
Restaurants If you feel like eating somewhere outside, Split has a lot to offer. A good choice might be Apetit, situated in the old centre of Split within the walls of the Papalićeva palace from the 15th century. Another place to visit should be area Šperun ( behind the Church of St. Frane ) where are lot of small traditional restaurants called ''konoba'' situated. In the heart of old town, there are lot of ''Wine and Cheese Bars'' which offer a comprehensive wine list featuring some of the best wines from Dalmatia & Croatia as well as unique selection of cheeses, charcuterie and delicatessen.

Free time The most popular recreation spots in Split are Marjan and Žnjan. The dormitory where you will be staying at is located 5 minutes walk from '' the door of the Marjan '' . There are jogging lanes, beaches, restaurants. You can also rent a bike there. Good fact about Split is that it has clean and popular beaches in resident part of the city (Bačvice, Ovčice, Obojena Svjetlost, Kašuni, Žnjan) . The most popular beach is Bačvice. It is all from fine sand. Bačvice is also known for its traditional beach game with small ball called Picigin. In summer every year there is a world championship in Picigin, but don't be suprised if you encounter people playing Picigin in the winter. The main place for shopping is the city center. It is full of shops of well known brands and small boutiques. If you are a fan of shopping malls, there are two main shopping malls in Split : City Center One and Joker. While sightseeing of the Diocletian Palace, find the ''Golden gate''. There is a statute of Grgur Ninski . It is said that if you touch the big toe of the statue and make a wish, your wish will come true. One of the things you must do is to climb the bell tower of St. Duje next to the palace mausoleum. The stairs cling to the inside of the tower, and in places the steps cross the large open window spaces. The ascent is certainly not for those with vertigo, but the views from the top are marvelous. It costs only 15 kn to go up the bell tower.

After 27 long years of waiting Split finally got an aquarium with impressive dimensions and with flora and fauna that represents wealth of Croatian underwater world. Split Aquarium is located in Vranjic near Split. It is open every day, including Saturdays and Sundays, from 10 to 22 h. To come there, you can catch a bus No. 31 (Split-Vranjic) of Promet Split. Trogir is a historic town and harbour on the Adriatic coast. It is part of the greater Split metropolitan area. It is on the UNESCO World Heritage List as it is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe. From Split, Trogir can be reached by bus No. 37 (Split-Trogir) in Sukoišanska street. Ticket bought in the bus costs 17 kn (2.2 €), but it is cheaper if you buy it in a kiosk, especially ticket with return. Omiš, a small town near Split, is a perfect destination for all adventure lovers. The last open is zip lining. Depending on the size of the group zipline gives you up to three hours of unforgettable fun and beautiful nature. Apart from zip lining, Omiš also offers excellent opportunities for free climbing. Over 40 marked climbing routes on 7 different climbing locations are situated in the very heart of town. As you can see, Omiš has a lot to offer including spectacular rafting experience on the Cetina river. The three to four-hour long rafting trip takes you down a 12 kilometre long part of the Cetina course . National Park Kornati forms the greater part the Kornati island group in the Croatian part of the Adriatic in Dalmatia, west of Šibenik. You can reach the Kornati National Park by participating in organized tours provided by numerous individuals and/or tourist agencies in Split. Krka is the seventh national park in Croatia, known for its many lakes and waterfalls. It was named after the river Krka, which is part of the park. The national park is located just a few kilometers northeast of the city of Šibenik. As well as for NP Kornati, many travel agencies in Split offer a day trip to NP Krka.

Important Important Notes! Don't forget to bring a white lab coat with you when you are coming. It is the official clothing of pharmacists in Croatia and you will need it for your internship. Some pharmacists require that you bring medical clogs as well so make sure you ask your LEO if that is the case for you. Average summer temperature might be 28°C, but make sure you bring lots of clothing with you for temperatures well above 30°C if you are coming in summer, as well as a light jacket in case of rainy days. Don't forget to check the weather report before your arrival either, so you know what kind of weather to expect when you get here. If you are given a local student card so you can eat at the student restaurant for student prices, don't forget to give it back before you leave. Our students are borrowing those cards to you and will need them back after you return home. Student restaurants ("Menza") are only opened during the school year. They are closed during the summer holidays (between July 15 and September 1).
