JACKET
Choosing the right fabric Choosing the right fabric for your dressmaking projects is essential for a professional and comfortable finish. This fitted, unlined jacket with collar, pockets, stitched hems and optional trim is recommended for moderate stretch knit fabrics. These include wool jersey, ponte knit, cotton knit and sweatshirt fleece. We’d recommend that you avoid using very lightweight cotton knits as your jacket won’t hang well. Designer Ann Charles made up the raspberry-coloured jacket (left) from a lightweight cotton suiting material with a woven texture. This isn’t actually a stretch fabric but, as you can see, it works

beautifully. If you do opt for lightweight suiting like Ann, it’s vital to measure yourself accurately to ensure you make up your jacket in the right size and to give yourself a comfortable fit. Designer Lesley Tawton made the pretty floral-print jacket, below, using a cotton jersey blend knit fabric. A mix of 50% cotton and 50% polyester, this fabric has a 25% stretch giving the jacket a soft, comfortable fit, which feels wonderful to wear. Finally, a word on prints. Your jacket pattern is unsuitable for obvious diagonals but pretty much anything else goes! You’ll find pattern-matching stripes makes life a little trickier but the result can be stunning. Block colours (why not add a twist with contrasting coloured pockets?) and small prints work beautifully, but don’t rule out big, bold prints for a fantastic statement piece.
“We chose a soft, cotton jersey blend knit fabric for this floral jacket in tones of pink, purple and chartreuse green”
