Make it! ANGEL Using the templates on our pattern pages, cut out a body, collar, arms and wings from patterned paper. Glue the sides of the body together to make a cone. Repeat with the collar and secure over the cone. Glue the wings to the back of the body, then adhere the ends of the arms and tuck them behind the body. To create a head, wrap and glue pink fluffy wool or embroidery thread around a wooden ball, creating pigtails. Tie each pigtail with a bow. Add rosy cheeks with pink chalk. Draw a pair of eyes, a nose and mouth with fine black and white pens. Attach a small paper tab inside the neck of the cone and secure the head to it. Cut a circle from decorative paper and place at the back of the head for a halo. Add buttons and dots of white relief paint for extra detail and finish with a pink paper heart, attached with glue, at the bottom.
TREE DECS Cut a body and pair of wings from patterned paper. Glue the body edges together to form a cone, then snip the point off with scissors. Make a long loop from green thread and feed two beads on the ends for feet. Use a crimping bead to hold them in position. Feed the loop through a small button, held with a knot in the neck of the cone; this remains hidden. Pull the loop through the point of the cone,
“PLACE THE LARGER ANGEL ON THE TOP OF A CHRISTMAS TREE OR IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR DINING TABLE AS A CENTREPIECE Cathie Shuttleworth, Designer adding a large cream bead for a head. Apply a dot of glue where the head meets the cone. Attach the wings to the back of the body and glue a circle behind the head for a halo. Wrap ribbon around the body for arms and secure with glue. For the hair, curl fluffy thread or wool into a small coil and attach to the top of the head with glue. Embellish the design with white relief paint, ricrac and buttons. Draw eyes with a fine black pen.
CARD Make a side-folding card, 10cm x 15cm, from blue patterned card, with a plain strip of paper glued down the middle. Cut wings and a halo from patterned paper and add to the face of the card. Trim a paper triangle for the body and attach with foam pads. Add arms and hands to the sides. Curl pink fluffy thread or wool into a circle and secure on top of the halo. Foam mount a circle for the head, adding two eyes with a fine black pen and rosy cheeks with chalk. Draw legs in black and add paper shoes to the ends. Finish with decorative buttons and white relief paint. CB

Did you know?
Gift wrapping
• Gingerbread was brought to Europe by an Armenian monk during the 10th century. In medieval times, they used wooden moulds to shape fancy designs. • The first documented instance of figure-shaped gingerbread biscuits is from the court of Elizabeth I, where she had gingerbread figures made in the likeness of important guests. • In the 17th century, only professional gingerbread bakers were permitted to produce gingerbread all year round. There were even guilds set up to control production. • Decorated gingerbread houses date from the early 1800s in Germany. They're thought to be the result of the famous Grimms' fairy tale, Hansel and Gretel. After the book was published, bakers began making ornamented edible homes that became popular for Christmas. • The locals of Bergen, Norway, have built a city of gingerbread houses each year since 1991. Named Pepperkakebyen, or 'the gingerbread city', it's the largest of its kind in the world.
Line a box of your choice with waxed paper. Wrap ribbon around the gingerbread shapes, interleaved with more waxed paper, then put into the box. Decant royal icing sugar, 250g, into a cellophane packet. Put the sweets into bags and tie with ribbon. Finish three more in this way.
“Design each house around a theme. Disney's Frozen is a big hit with my nieces, so I might try that!” Jecelyn Latimer, Editorial Assistant
House assemble Prepare thick ‘glue’ from royal icing sugar and a few drops of water. Pipe a line of icing along the base of one of the side walls and fix upright onto a cake board, then again along the edge and base of a pointed end wall. Fix to the side wall. Continue with the other side and end walls to form a box. Hold in place for a few minutes to allow the icing to set, then glue the pieces together. Pipe icing along the top edges of the house and position the roof pieces. Decorate with the sweets and use icing to outline the windows and doors.
