Star Letter

Hi CB, I’ve really enjoyed using the Fly-Away Home dies from the September 2016 issue! I started crafting to help a few charities, including a church which is raising funds for women in India to develop essential skills. I also have a friend who donates money to build schools in Africa, so I make cards for her to sell. I like crafting for a cause; it makes me realise how lucky we are here.

STAR PRIZE This month our Star Letter winner will receive a collection of BoBunny’s Winter Wishes collection! Celebrate the beauty of the colder months with these gorgeous designs featuring frosty, vintage motifs and patterns. Visit bobunny.com

COLETTE SMITH’S MASTERCLASS

Zentangle Greeting Card PRACTICE MINDFULNESS WITH SPRING FLOWER DOODLED DESIGNS

Doodling and colouring are as popular as ever, so I've designed a lovely floral outline you can use as a template to complete with structured Zentanglestyle patterns, or you can create your own to get all the relaxing benefits. There are no rules, and you can fill in as much or as little as you want. This floral design is perfect for spring cards, so I've finished mine with a pastel rainbow and simple sentiment, but using a couple of colours to create a bold modern look would work a treat! The most important thing with this is to relax and have fun.

In The Know... Your lines don't have to be straight, this all adds to the doodled look. If you are nervous about doodling with a fine liner, start with a pencil and then go over with a fine liner after. Leaving white areas or colouring with black can really make your colours pop out. Try using coloured pencils to create subtle shading to the design. Colour in as much or as little of the design as you like, there are no rules!

“You could also make the design larger, print onto good quality paper, colour in, then frame it” Colette Smith, Designer

white card, 10cm x 14.5cm, then fill the inside with shape outlines. Alternatively, use the template. Doodle shapes, lines and patterns to fill the outline. Zigzags, bubbles and grids are a good start, and repeating patterns is encouraged. Continue doodling until all the segments are filled in, then use ProMarkers to colour in sections or the entire design. Attach to the front of a 10.5 x 15cm blank. Stamp a sentiment onto white card, trim to 1cm x 3.5cm, then fix to the top right using foam pads. CB

JULIE & WENDY

Crafty Beggars presenters Julie Peasgood and Wendy Turner-Webster get creative with fabric To mark the end of 2016 and welcome in 2017, the Crafty Beggars duo have been reflecting on their resolution to spend more time creating lots of wonderful things. They have been incredibly busy preparing so many new and different crafts for their live TV appearances on Create and Craft UK and USA with Crafty Beggars In The House! (not to mention the channel’s online Craft Academy) – it’s a wonder they had any time left at all, but we can all agree that 2016 has been their most productive so far, and they’ve continued to wow us. Check out some of our highlights across the page. They promise to grow even bigger and better in the next year, and we can’t wait to see what they have in store for us!

WENDY SAYS… Much like Julie, the art of sewing is certainly not atop my ‘favourite ways to craft’ list. However, it’s a new year and therefore a perfect time to open my arms and embrace the medium, if only to see what all the fuss is about! I did have a sewing machine when I was 16, and made several garments under my mum’s expert guidance. I’m quite excited to reignite my enthusiasm, since the new gadgets seem to do everything bar making you a cup of tea! To get myself started, I’ve been doing a bit of hand sewing with fabulous fabrics and I love my exotic looking cat

guarding his biscuits! In other news, I finally broke open the box of my Brother ScanNCut to add a crown motif to a boring old plain tote bag – New Year projects aplenty!

AFTER

In the Spotlight

JULIE SAYS… For me, a new year is about making a fresh start with renewed vigour on all fronts… at least until I discover an unopened chocolate orange! Moving forward, I am

determined to properly master new crafts each month, and at the top of my list is a workshop with Marilia Carvalho, mariliacarvalhostainedglass.co.uk, who creates extraordinary

and unique decorative glass with a mix of ammonites and fossils. On that note, I’m really pleased with the variety of things I managed to put into this gardening apron, made for our USA show. It will have to be used with care though, as the lace and jewels won’t stand up to much hard labour! I had so much fun making Cynthia the snail for our UK show; I filled the base with dried rice, as she’s a doorstop, and I made

her shell quite oversized – it looks as though she’s carrying a mansion rather than a house!

Divide the ear pieces into pairs, pin and sew, right sides together. Turn out and hand sew, then attach both ears to the points marked on the main horse body. Cover four buttons with spotty fabric. To attach each leg, thread a needle into the body and out through the limb and button. Pull the thread tight and fasten securely. For the mane, wrap yarn around card, 6cm x 15cm. Q&A

Jewellery enthusiast Jane Halls started her business, CJ Beaders with her daughter Claire back in 2004. Now she enjoys dipping into some of the 16,000 products available from her online store and shop to make beautiful jewellery pieces. When Jane is not busy running her thriving business, she can often be found exhibiting at bead shows around the country, which takes up most of her weekends!

“I’ve heard a lot about Miyuki beads, what are they and what are they best for?” Susan Cooper, Brentwood

1

Trim the wire to 1cm above the top bead. Make a right angle and bend close to the bead with flat-nosed pliers.

2

Hold the tip of the wire with round-nosed pliers and rotate to bend the wire part way around.

3

Reposition the pliers and continue rotating until the tip touches the wire and loop centre.

1

You will need at least 3cm of wire above the last bead. Hold the wire above the bead with snipe-nosed pliers and bend it at a right angle.

2

Hold the wire close to the bend with round-nosed pliers and wrap the tail of the wire all the way around to form the loop.

3

Hold the loop flat in snipenosed pliers and wind the wire tail around the stem, covering the gap between the loop and bead. Trim with cutters.

Jane says… Miyuki is the brand name of a Japanese manufacturer which produces many types of bead ranges in different shapes and sizes, the most popular include round seed beads and delicas (small tubular beads). Each bead has its own colour code and where Miyuki excels is that if you need to re-order the same beads, you can be sure to get an identical match. Miyuki seed beads also have slightly larger holes than those from other sources. This is important if you are making intricate designs that need multiple passes of a needle through the bead, as there is more room!

“What’s the difference between fire polished and ordinary glass beads?” Jane Tomlinson, Falmouth

Jane says… Fire polished beads have facets that are cut by machine, normally on a grinding wheel. Once faceted they’re placed in a very hot oven for a short period of time. This tends to briefly melt the surface of the glass, which removes the irregularities caused by the faceting process and tends to ‘polish’ the surface giving a softer edge to the facets.
