Matt blue card, 8.5cm x 10cm, to a 10.5cm square blank. Fix pink spot print, 8.5cm x 9.5cm, to the front. Attach a yellow die-cut circle frame using foam pads, then assemble a cat image in the centre. Add a sentiment and gems.

Die-cut a bright pink frame and another aqua one, then save the blue centre and pink edge.

Cut out and piece together a lime cat with pink ear centres and an orange bow tie.

Cut, then fold white card, 11cm x 14.5cm to create a topfolding card blank. Trim pink grid paper to 10.5cm x 14cm. Attach blue heart paper, 3.5cm x 10.5cm to the bottom of the pink. Attach a die-cut scallop border across the paper joins, then trim any excess. Fix a pink paper doily onto the background panel. Thread pink twine through four die-cut bunting flags.

Glue the bunting in place at the top of the card using foam pads, then secure the twine at the back of the panel. Stick the completed panel onto the front of the card. Attach a small die-cut heart onto each pennant using foam pads. Attach a pearl heart embellishment to each of the scallops on the border. Add two coffee cup shapes using foam pads. Fix an xoxox die-cut onto the blue heart panel, then

stamp ‘happy anniversary’ onto white card. Trim, then layer onto the coffee cups using foam pads. CB

We want to help people make great clothes, and to do that you need decent tools

atrick Grant chats about his new range of sewing tools, designing clothes, and The Great British Sewing Bee
What process do you go through when designing a new collection? I always carry a notepad and pencil case full of Berol Mirado pencils, a sharpener and rubber. This allows me to not only draw clothes, but also write and record things I see. Inspiration comes from anywhere and everywhere, so I’m always taking photographs of random things. I share an idea with my two designers, then they spend two or three days researching. After that, it’s a matter of distilling it down. We’ve looked at Seminole Indians and Hungarian dress this season, which obviously wouldn’t work for our customers, but we take inspiration from details, such as appliqué on shirts. If you had to wear one garment for the rest of your life, what would it be? I have two pairs of oversized cotton trousers that I wear everyday; they’re ideal for weekends and cycling to and from work. If I’m not wearing tailored trousers or a suit, I’m in them. Also, navy blue crew neck jumpers! I have about 40 in different weights, yarns, neck shapes and stitches. My favourite fabric has to be grey flannel – I can’t imagine a wardrobe without it. It feels quintessentially British, is lovely to wear, is durable, and has depth. If I had to have one suit, it would probably be a grey flannel one!
Do you have any advice for dressmakers that are lacking confidence in their body shape? Most people are uneven in one way or another and off-the-peg clothes are cut around a very standardised form, so they don’t sit quite right. Something as simple as correcting the balance in a garment so that it hangs in a natural way can immediately make you feel better. If you’re new to sewing, start with the basics. Making clothes isn’t rocket science, but it takes practice, so give yourself fewer seams and darts to perfect and you’ll be able to produce something flattering.
“Making clothes isn’t rocket science, but it takes practice” Did you enjoy the last season of the GBSB? I loved working with May previously, but I also enjoy working with Esme. Her fashion background is exciting, and we have a lot in common. Esme is punchy, feisty, opinionated and ruthless, she’s just brilliant! It was interesting to work with someone who has a very distinct point of view on how the clothes should look, rather than constructed. We focused more on aesthetic than we have done previously, so we’ve added that extra layer on top of construction and technique which was fun. It takes two long days to film each episode, so it’s great that me and Esme get along, as we spend a lot of time together. What can we look forward to in the GBSB 2017? They haven’t started casting yet or producing the challenges, so I’m not sure
at the moment. The show probably won’t be out until nearer the end of the year. Some of the tasks in the last series worked really well, such as international week. I pushed that theme for a while, and personally thought it was the best episode. I’ve always wanted to broaden the geographic and historic scope, so hopefully the show can hone in on that again. We explored the fifties and sixties, so why not the 1920s? The world of sewing is extraordinarily broad! What would you say to people who claim sewing is primarily for women? It isn’t, it’s as straightforward as that. In professional sewing, especially at Savile Row, there are as many men as there are ladies. The gender balance has changed quite dramatically in the last ten years. We are apprenticing more female tailors, but cutting is still predominantly male. The balance will shift, but I think it’ll always be 50/50. We’ve also had some talented male sewers on The Great British Sewing Bee. What inspired your new range of sewing tools with Hobbycraft? We feel that there’s a gap between entry-level budget tools and expensive high-end equivalents. We’re trying to make professional tools affordable to everybody. We described in detail to Hobbycraft what equipment we use at Norton & Sons, and the importance of them, which formed the basis of the collection. Open-ended thimbles are used every day in our workshop, but they are incredibly hard to find. To make great clothes, you need decent tools and the collection provides just that.

l Create your own wrapping paper by recycling brown parcel paper. Simply open an A4 envelope by cutting down one side and across the bottom, then turn it so the CASSIE’S DIY matt side is WRAPPING PAPER facing up and feed it into the printer. Create a repeat design on your computer and print. Ta da!

There’s certainly a resurgence of chokers, ear cuffs and silver, but the heavy black choker of 2016 is being replaced by daintier chains worn layered together. Pieces might be getting smaller and more delicate but there are more of them. Way more. Instead of just one set of earrings, ear cuffs are now worn in multiples and go all the way up the ear. Rings and bracelets are stacked too. The ‘Whispers of the Rain Forest’ necklace by Tiffany & Co that Jessica Biel wore to the Oscars is a good example. It looks like hundreds of gold and diamond feathers strung from a low-slung diamond chainmail choker. The use of feathers is significant too; artists and makers have long felt a connection with the elegance of birds coupled with the freedom they signify which makes them a favourite across all disciplines. Jewellers like Kate from Grace and Flora Jewellery are replicating their fragility using the lost wax technique or, like Tiffany, translating their lightness in feathery fringes. When this new minimalism does allow for surface pattern, enamelling seems to be the method of choice, and I’m thrilled to see this incredible craft technique featured in the pages of the glossies and getting the recognition it deserves.

EAN Jewellery Elizabeth Anne Norris is an environmental scientist turned sterling silver jewellery artist fascinated by the properties of metal. Where her designs have a minimalist’s precision they are big on textures, detailing and finish.
