Hello... ...and welcome to a special collection of vintage-themed crafts. Inspired by what our mothers used to make, this book encases projects and ideas that bring back fond memories for all of us. We show you how to embroider a picture for your home (p24) and share a delightful biscuit recipe on p10. If your life is surrounded by the pitter-patter of tiny feet, then our crochet bootees (p19) and easy-to-sew doll on p26 are just the things. Plus, we divulge tip-top household remedies (baking soda is an endless source of power, don’t you know?) and offer a set of free papers designed by the lovely Jenny Ellory. We do hope you enjoy our selection of nostalgic treats – be sure to share your vintage makes with us on Facebook and Twitter. That’s a bit of an oxymoron, isn’t it?

Take three filters and tear off the side and bottom seam of each one. Fold twice into a smaller segment and cut a zig zag edge along the top. Trim off the bottom into a semicircle. Cut a length of crepe paper streamer, 42cm. Fold it over itself to make a small rectangle and cut a zig zag across the top edge. Open out the length and glue it around the inside top edge of the first filter so it stands proud by 3mm. Pleat the very bottom edge of the crepe streamer as you apply the glue, making it fit around the curve. Trim off a curve at the two top corners through all layers using the zig zag scissors. To make the frill edging, cut a long strip of pink tissue paper, 4.5cm deep. Snip a zig zag along one long side and use it to make a
frill on the inside top edge of the second filter. Add a another one on the outside of the filter using a crepe streamer. On the third filter, trim off a zig zag curve at the two top corners. Using the felt-tip pen, draw a line, 3mm thick and 6mm down from the top edge. Place the filter on a waterproof surface, then brush a line of water just underneath the ink to make the colour bleed up to the edge. Leave to dry. Make another frilly edge inside the third filter, but this time position it slightly below the filter

edge. To make the flower centre, roll the first filter up with the crepe paper outside, pleating the bottom edge from time to time as you roll. Hold the shape firmly at the bottom. Next, add the second filter with the pink tissue on the inside. Finish with the third filter and the crepe on the outside.
Make the Stems

Cut the wire into stem lengths and paint green. Bend the stems into three slight angles to create a more natural look. Trim the flower base to 2.5cm and push the stem

firmly up into the flower. Cut two pieces of crepe paper, each large enough to make a double leaf, and stick together with spray adhesive. Paint the paper on both sides with diluted green watercolour. Cut another piece of crepe paper, 5cm x 7.5cm, and paint. When dry, cut out the double leaf and snip some irregular triangles out of the top and bottom edges of the base.

Cover the masking tape under the flower head with glue and mould the base shape around it. Pierce a large enough hole in the centre of the double leaf for the stem to fit through. Place a dab of glue on the stem at the top angle and push the leaf up to it. Pinch the leaf around the stem to hold it in place. Curve the ends of the double leaf outward over a toothpick. CB

onto the head, then sew across the back. Embroider eyes, a nose and mouth. Copy a jacket onto two lots of red felt and cut out. Slice one of the jackets in half. Overstitch the three pieces together, leaving the front section open. Trim floral fabric for a blouse as follows: 8cm x 11cm for the front; 8cm square for the back-left; 8cm square for the back-right. Fold over the top edges by 5mm and sew running stitch across. Place the two back pieces on the front, right sides facing, and overstitch along the top edge. Sew up the sides with backstitch, leaving gaps for armholes. Fold over the edges of them and stitch. Turn out, then use a safety pin to hold in place. Trace and cut two shoes from red felt, then stitch the front and back pieces together. Sew blue felt circles on for buttons. Make a skirt by cutting floral fabric, 10cm x 30cm. Fold in the two long edges by 1.5cm, then sew across. Stitch red ricrac across the bottom.
