Cleethorpes Town has come a long way in its relatively short history. Initially formed in 1998 as Lincolnshire Soccer School, it was the brainchild of former Grimsby Town player Tommy Watson. The team was an immediate success with both boys and girls across every age group and the club began to grow quickly. In 2003, the club set up a flagship senior team. In the team's first season within the Lincolnshire League they secured a credible fourth place finish for which the foundations for the future were set. Now rebranded Cleethorpes Town, the club has redeveloped into an important community outlet. With almost 30 teams competing at every level of local and regional football, the Owls are one of the largest clubs in the area and still continues to expand in all areas. The excellent array of teams and high quality coaching saw the club awarded with Football Association Charter Standard Community Club Status thus further underlining the clubs commitment to providing high quality football coaching alongside enjoyment for youngsters. The development and evolution of Cleethorpes Town Football Club has been spearheaded by the first team. With the arrival of a new manager during the 2010-11 season it saw the club who were languishing in the lower echelons of the Sills and Betteridge Lincolnshire League go on to finish the season in an amazing third place finish. In addition, the club collected the Supplementary Cup by defeating Heckington United in the final at Sincil Bank. 2011-12 season saw us not only become champions of the Lincs League but also the Challenge Cup winners. Additionally the club was accepted into the NCEL. Our first season in the league saw us finish fourth in the table with some impressive victories along the way. It was a steep learning curve for the players, management and staff. The 2013-14 started with a change of management and Marcus Newell was brought in. The season started off at a medium pace but a long unbeaten streak mean the Owls were top of the league at christmas. However, we had a slow slow to the new year and fell 7 points behind with only a handful of games remaining. With the pressure at its highest, others around us felt it most and we managed to secure the title with one game to go. The club is determined to make further strides to improve and fulfil their immediate ambition of becoming North East Lincolnshire's most successful lower league football club.

It was Alex Flett in the 29th minute that should of opened the scoring as the keeper came rushing out to punch the ball clear but it fell to Flett who’s lob could not beat the back peddling keeper. Just 60 seconds later the Owls had two chances but squandered both. Firstly Robertson saw his shot blocked after a great move involving Jonathan Oglesby and Jack Barlow and the Oglesby fired an effort just inches over from 30 yards out. The chances kept coming and it looked as if the half was going to end goalless as Louis Grant, Oglesby and Mascall all went close to breaking the deadlock.

As the clocked ticked down and with just a minute to go in the half, the Owls finally made the break through as Robertson tucked the ball home after great build up play involving Hanslip and Barlow. The half ended seconds later with the Owls leading by 1-0 thanks to the late Robertson goal. With no changes at the break, the Owls kicked off the second half and started on the front foot. Heward went close just seconds into the half as Oglesby played a delightful ball to the back post only for Heward to shoot wide of the mark. At the other end, chances where at a premium for Welfare and as James Dyson shot high and wide it was obvious that this was not going to be there afternoon.

There confidence was lifted briefly when Joshua Prudhoe went close as he tried to lob Beattie but it was just too strong and over the bar. The Owls did extend their lead though just 90 second slater in the 58th minute when Heward nodded the ball home from 12 yards out from an Oglesby cross for his second ever Owls goal. Manager Marcus Newell made a substitution just moments after the goal bringing on Nathan Emson in replacement of scorer Robertson.. The extra pace up front was evident as just three minutes later Louis Grant and Oglesby both saw shots parried and saved as the Owls looked to extend their lead. A second substitution was made in the 68th minute as Louis Grant was replaced by Lee McFarland. McFarland was placed in an unfamiliar role as a striker as he has been used an a centre-back so far this season. In the 71st minute, Daniel Grant then went close once more as he took aim from 25 yards as he beat his marker but it flew the wrong side of the post much to his dismay. Substitute McFarland should of had the ball in the back of the net with just 17 minutes to go however, following a fantastic bursting run from Daniel Grant, McFarland could not slot the ball home.

Welfare should of pulled a goal back in the 78th minute after Beattie had missed a cross from the right but Ryan O’Reilly could only head wide with the goal at his mercy. The final few minutes of the game was an end to end affair with both sides having chances to score. For the visitors O’Reilly and Prudhoe both went close but thanks to some grea keeping from Beattie, the

scoreline was kept at 2-0. At the other end, McFarland attempted an overhead kick but he missed the ball and nearly kicked his marker. Then a wonderfully worked move from the Owls involving Hanslip and Flett meant that Emson had the easiest of chances to slot the ball home and to seal an emphatic 3-0 win for the Owls.

empty net. However, the referee had adjudged a foul on the keeper by Louis Grant, therefore ruling the goal out much to the annoyance of the striker.

Cleethorpes Town ran out comfortable winners on Saturday against Glasshoughton Welfare 3-0 at the Bradley Community Stadium. Goals from Brody Robertson, Lawrence Heward and a late Nathan Emson goal was enough to see the Owls take all three points.

The visitors struggled to get hold of the ball and when they did, it seemed to be they were attempting to play the ball in behind the Owls stern defence. This nearly paid off with just eight minutes on the clock as Joshua Morley played a delightful ball into the box but Owls shot stopper Brad Beattie was quick to react and raced out to claim the ball. In the 11th minute, Daniel Grant, playing his 56th game went in search of his first ever goal. He let loose from 25 yards out on the left hand side, just outside the area

Only five minutes later, and the Owls should of scored. Alex Flett, tricked his way past three static Welfare players but his shot was just too weak and easily saved by Archer. It was just one way traffic as Welfare where content on defending in numbers and throwing bodies in the way of any shot. This was evident as Robertson raced clear in the 19th minute but Adam Walsh raced back just as Robertson was about to pull the trigger and blocked an almost certain goal bound effort.

Three corners in a row was the next main piece of action in the 22nd minute as the Owls pushed on in search of the opener. The first two corners where put out of play by Welfare defenders but the third corner caused mayhem inside the box as the ball pinged around and eventually it fell to Captain Darren Hanslip who saw his shot on goal cleared off the line by a well placed defender.

Watched by a healthy crowd of 139, the game started off at a steady pace with the Owls having most of the early possession. The first chance came with just two minutes on the clock when Jack Barlow floated in a diagonal ball into the box however it just evaded Jonathan Oglesby’s outstretched foot.

but his effort could only brush the outside of the post.

The Owls made just 1 change to the starting 11 who beat Nostell Miners Welfare 5-1 last time out. Louis Grant came in for the unavailable Marc Cooper for his 14th start of the season.

Just a few minutes later though and ball was in the back of the net for home side. Louis Grant charged down keeper who could not keep ahold of ball and tapped the ball home into

SUNDAY 19th OCTOBER 2014 LINDEN HOMES CLUB, CLEE ROAD, GRIMSBY.

GOOD evening and welcome back to The Bradley Community Stadium for the visit of Garforth Town in the NCEL Premier Division...

Well, where do I start. It’s been a hectic few months at the club. From the glory of FA Cup wins to having our goal posts stolen at the club. One thing that has remained pretty consistent and thats the on field play. Marcus has got a bunch of lads that really want to play for and with each other. They will put their bodies on the line and this hasn't happened by accident. Marcus knows his players very well and knows how to get them going. He has the respect of them all and this is evident in recent results.

The Owl 06

The special offer which was ran on Saturday for Grimsby Town season ticket holders and GTFC Trust members to get in with a discount proved popular. It will now be ran at every home match which Grimsby Town are either not playing or are paying away giving the Mariners fans an alternative to traveling away or not seeing any football at all. I would like to thank all the unseen staff at the club who do a lot of work that is not seen. Without their help, this club

would not be where it is right now. Lastly, there are only a limited amount of places left on the coach for our away trip to Southam United in the FA Vase. It is FREE of charge to all Owls supports as a way of saying thank you for your continued and loyal support.

Onto tonights game and it is a chance for us to keep our recent good form going but it will be a tough one against a big physical Garforth side. I have been asked a few times already this season who I think has been our outstanding player. I think all the lads have been fantastic, showing a first class attitude this season but if I was pushed on one it would be the skipper, Darren Hanslip. He is playing the best football of his career to date and is leading by example.

Mansfield used the extra player to their advantage and crossed the ball in only to be turned into the net with an own goal from Gemma Wardle. Gemma Charlton made a couple of individual runs into the opposing penalty area, but the keeper was in the right place at the right time and prevented any goals. Mansfield then played another through ball and again Kassie Wallis made another great save to keep the score down. Cleethorpes played a couple of over the top balls which left the Mansfield defence only to be ruled offside. Just before half

time Mansfield let go a stunning strike from the edge of the area into the top corner an unstoppable shot, 3-0. Half time came and it was a case of stick or twist. With another Mansfield goal soon after half time, the mountain was too big too climb and a Mansfield cross from the right saw it go across the goal mouth for a tap in. The game was then finished by another stunning goal by a Mansfield winger from outside the area into the top corner. Game finished 6-0.

The second half started well with the Owls having a good few chances to put the game beyond Caistor but saves off Milne and Overend kept the score down.

A tricky looking game against fellow Division 1 side Caistor Tennyson FC in the Junior Challenge Cup didn't start well as the Owls lost 3 players in the morning of the game. Josh Thompson continued in goal with Paul Blow and To m W i n g a t e p l a y i n g centre half, supported by evergreen wing-backs Mark Smith and Matt Donson. Dale Pratt played in front of the back four and

continued as Captain with Paul Kavanagh and Josh Garner playing in the middle of the park. Dale Mason played off the front two of Mikey Milne and debutant Mackenzie Overend. The game started at a quick pace with neither settling down until Mikey Milne broke free and slotted the ball under the Caistor keeper for his first goal for the club.

With 15 minutes to go Caistor scored a header from a corner to put pressure on for the remaining minutes but the impressive back four Blow, Wingate, Smith and Donson and some good saves from Thompson. Cleethorpes AKP saw themselves slip to their first defeat in 4 games as the lead leaders direct style proved too much for the side. With plenty of ball hit into the channels by the hosts it saw Cleethorpes unable to cope with the threat.

GARFORTH TOWN Garforth Town Football Club were originally formed in 1964 as the MINERS ARMS, a local pub team taking their name from the hostelry where they were based. Formative years were spent in the Elmet Sunday League and then the Leeds Sunday Combination League in 1972. Having no ground of their own and none available in Garforth, matches had to be played on a council pitch in nearby Swillington. Following several years of League & Cup success, the club decided to step up into Saturday Football and joined the West Yorkshire League, at the same time acquiring their own ground at BRIERLANDS LANE, by transforming a former council rubbish tip. In 1977 Garforth made an application to join the Yorkshire League, however they were advised that pub teams were ineligible to compete so they changed the team’s name to GARFORTH MINERS and were duly elected. At the start of the 1981/82 season they became founder

members of the Northern Counties East League, which was an amalgamation of the old Yorkshire and Midland League. In 1985 came the name change to the present one of GARFORTH TOWN. The 1986/87 season saw Town produce their best ever Cup run when they reached the QUARTER FINAL stage of the FA VASE, eventually bowing out by 2 goals to 1 to the Essex based side Collier Row. 1991 saw the clubhouse erected at Brierlands Lane and in 1995 floodlights were installed following a campaign, which included the handing over, to local councillors of a petition in favour of lights going up which was signed by several hundred people. The appointment of Dave Parker as manager in 1994 after the departure of the previous manager and nearly all the first team players started what is

undoubtedly Town’s best period in the NCEL. For the 1998/99 season Town moved into their brand new purpose built stadium WHEATLEY PARK. That season saw Town reach the final of the NCEL President’s Cup, eventually losing over two legs to North Ferriby United and in their first season in the NCEL Premier Division although topping the table to Christmas finish in a very creditable mid-table position. In the 1999/2000 season, despite a poor league finish, Town proved to be a cup winning side. They won the West Riding County Cup, beating Eccleshill United 2-0, as well as the NCE League Cup with a 3-1 victory over First Division side Glapwell in the final at Ossett Albion’s ground.

RECORDS:

Seasons 2008/09 & 2009/10 saw Town’s league position stabilize, however they were more successful in cup competitions; victorious in the West Riding County Senior Cup in both seasons. The Miners finished a creditable 13th in season 2010/11, the highlight being a famous victory in the last game of the season over 1st Division North Champions, Chester in front of their record highest crowd of 2428. 2011/12 saw Town under manager Steve Nichol reach their highest league finish when a final day victory over Skelmersdale Utd resulted in a 5th place finish and a trip to Curzon Ashton in

the play-offs. However despite being the b e t t e r s i d e , To w n b o w e d o u t o n penalties.

A disastrous season followed in 2012/13 with the resignation of Nichol and disbanding of the first team squad resulting in Town being relegated back to the NCEL Premier Division. 2013 saw Simon Clifford’s ownership came to an end, and a new Management Committee was formed with a major sponsorship from RIASA assisting with the rebuilding process. Graham Nicholas, a UEFA ‘A’ qualified coach, was appointed as 1st Team Manager and a new playing squad was formed. For the 2013/14 campaign the Club aimed to avoid a second successive relegation and achieve stability on and off the field. With the support of RIASA and the hard work of all involved this was achieved, a league finish of 14th was recorded and the club on a much sounder footing going into its 50th Anniversary year.

Daniel, you have played at right-back now for a couple of seasons for the Owls, but only became a regular last season after playing just 11 times during 2012-13. What's made the difference between then and now? The gaffer has said from when he took over that who plays well stays in and that was the case last year. Previous year I left early as wasn’t getting much playing time.

You have never scored whilst playing for the first team, do you think you'll break your duck this season? If we get a penalty i’ll certainly be going up for it. I’ve never missed one either so that can’t go against me!

Winning the league must of been great, tell me about the emotions you went through? It felt brilliant. We definitely deserved to win Playing 31 games during the last campaign the title last year and all the hard work paid must of taken its toll on you, how do you off in the end. We showed great quality and cope with full-time work and playing? team spirit. It works quite well as am only part time as a sports coach so I get the chance to get lots of Marcus has had a successful time as the rest in! 'gaffer', why do you think this is? He tells you how it is. He is a motivator but So, take me back to the beginning, how did knows how to get the best out of people. He you first get into football? also trusts his players, that’s what’s made the I got into football around the age of 6, and it difference with me in particular. sort of progressed from there through my younger year and into my teens. What can we expect from The Owls this season, mid-table? Top 6? Promotion? You joined the Owls in 2012 from Selby A good season would be a top 10 finish but you Town, how was the transition between the never know in football! clubs? C l e e t h o r p e s To w n w h e r e m u c h m o r e Lastly, a lot of the players nickname you professional than Selby. We train for a start "Grunty", is this an accurate character trait and also the standard and quality is much of yours? better. Everyones banter is pretty poor, so I would have to say no! Who did you make your debut against for The Owls and how did you find it? By Craig Kendall I can’t remember to be honest! (Looking back at the records, it was against Clipstone Welfare in a 4-2 win on Saturday 24th November 2012)
