SCORED CONCEDED

Cleethorpes Town has come a long way in its relatively short history. Initially formed in 1998 as Lincolnshire Soccer School, it was the brainchild of former Grimsby Town player Tommy Watson. The team was an immediate success with both boys and girls across every age group and the club began to grow quickly. In 2003, the club set up a flagship senior team. In the team's first season within the Lincolnshire League they secured a credible fourth place finish for which the foundations for the future were set. Now rebranded Cleethorpes Town, the club has redeveloped into an important community outlet. With almost 30 teams competing at every level of local and regional football, the Owls are one of the largest clubs in the area and still continues to expand in all areas. The excellent array of teams and high quality coaching saw the club awarded with Football Association Charter Standard Community Club Status thus further underlining the clubs commitment to providing high quality football coaching alongside enjoyment for youngsters. The development and evolution of Cleethorpes Town Football Club has been spearheaded by the first team. With the arrival of a new manager during the 2010-11 season it saw the club who were languishing in the lower echelons of the Sills and Betteridge Lincolnshire League go on to finish the season in an amazing third place finish. In addition, the club collected the Supplementary Cup by defeating Heckington United in the final at Sincil Bank. 2011-12 season saw us not only become champions of the Lincs League but also the Challenge Cup winners. Additionally the club was accepted into the NCEL. Our first season in the league saw us finish fourth in the table with some impressive victories along the way. It was a steep learning curve for the players, management and staff. The 2013-14 started with a change of management and Marcus Newell was brought in. The season started off at a medium pace but a long unbeaten streak mean the Owls were top of the league at christmas. However, we had a slow slow to the new year and fell 7 points behind with only a handful of games remaining. With the pressure at its highest, others around us felt it most and we managed to secure the title with one game to go. The club is determined to make further strides to improve and fulfil their immediate ambition of becoming North East Lincolnshire's most successful lower league football club.

With both sides unchanged the Owls started the second half. It was a quiet opening period for both sides but then in the 49th minute the best chance of the game so far came. Aohden Brownlee found himself in the middle of the penalty box unmarked with just Beattie to beat but he fired over and into the car park with the goal at his mercy. Another penalty appeal was waved away, this time in the 53rd minute as Richardson ferocious shot seems to hit a hand but in all fairness the defender knew nothing about it as is was hit with some force.

With the half coming to the hosts should of opened the scoring but Paul Whiteley saw his deflected effort skim the top of Beattie’s crossbar and it went out for a corner. Thackley kept coming forward trying to break the Owls defence down but stern defending from Lawrence Heward, Peck, Mascall and McFarland kept the hosts frustrated and at bay. With just over an hour gone on the clock, Peck came just inches away from opening the scoring but from a Barlow cross he could not find the back of the net.

The pressure was kept up by the Owls as Richardson tested the keeper seconds later from 20 yards then Grant’s follow up was saved by Hall from close range.

Thackley then broke forward from a quick throw out where Tom Degdale sprinted 50 yards with the ball but instead of squaring the ball he went on his own and blazed over the bar with much better options available. In the 70th minute though, the long wait for a goal was over. Cooper had the easiest of chances to bury the ball after Grant and Flett linked beautifully for the later for square for Cooper to tap home from 8 yards out much to the delight of the traveling support. Just seconds after the restart, Thackley’s afternoon took a turn for the worse as Maguire saw red for a second bookable offence and as he walked down the tunnel it seemed as though any chance for a Thackley comeback was gone as well. However, the final 15 minutes of the game was somewhat a “backs against the wall” affair. Thackley looked like they had the advantage in men as Trueman, Brownlee and Whiteley all went close to equalising.

Cleethorpes Town ran out narrow 1-0 winners over North Bradford side Thackley on Saturday in the NCEL Premier Division. A second half goal from top scorer Marc Cooper was enough to see the Owls over the line. The hosts did however finish the game with just 10 men following the dismissal of Captain Pat Maguire for a second bookable offence.

Both sides started the g a m e tentatively with chances in the opening exchanges being limited to shots well off target. Firstly, in the s e c o n d m i n u t e T h a c k l e y ’s Mike Garrod made room for him but scuffed his shot wide of Brad Beattie’s goal. Then Richardson’s shot was initially parried to Cooper but he could only shoot just wide of the mark.

The hosts applied pressure to the Owls back in the opening 15 minutes but good defending from the Owls backline and good goal keeping from Beattie kept the scores level. At the other end, Louis Grant had a great chance to put the visitors ahead after inter-linking with Cooper but Kris Hargreaves tackled him just as he was going to pull the trigger. With 23 minutes on the clock, Jack Barlow managed to trick his way past two Thackley defenders and was then bundled to the floor. The traveling fans and players where up in arms appealing for a penalty but it was waved away by the referee.

The visitors kept up the pressure as Peck then saw a headed effort from a Jonathan Oglesby corner headed off the line much to his dismay. Then just 60 seconds later a free kick from Cooper was fired narrowly wide from 25 yards with Hall at full stretch. The ball did finally find the back of the net, however the effort was ruled out for

The Owls made three changes to the starting 11 who beat Garforth Town 4-1 in midweek. Daniel Grant was dropped to the bench, whilst Kirk Wheeler and Darren Hanslip where both unavailable. In replace of them were Richard Peck, Lee McFarland and Jack Richardson.

SUNDAY 19th OCTOBER 2014 LINDEN HOMES CLUB, CLEE ROAD, GRIMSBY.

GOOD evening and welcome back to The Bradley Community Stadium for the visit of Shaw Lane Aquaforce in the NCEL Premier Division...

Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the Bradley FDC for this evenings game. Tonight sees us play Shaw Lane Aquaforce, the team we pipped to the league title last term. Firstly I'd like to give a warm welcome to the players management and committee and I hope you have an enjoyable evening. Shaw Lane like ourselves are new to this division but again are showing what a good side they are having a

great start and lying second in the table. But we are on a fantastic run ourselves and this should be a cracking game and a great advert for NCEL. Off the pitch things are finally moving on the development at the linden club. Unfortunately there was a small covenant on the lease which had to be sorted legally and this has dragged on but now it has been sorted and hopefully the plans will be submitted on Monday 3rd November.

Back to tonight's game I hope you all enjoy the game and will return again. The coach for Saturdays away trip is now FULL and will be leaving at 10am from the Linden Homes Club. It is scheduled to leave Southam at 6pm on Saturday for the home journey.

The game started with a quick rush from Mansfield and they opened the scoring early on with a through ball. Mansfield kept the pressure on and another through ball saw the Mansfield striker one on one with keeper Kassie Wallis and a brilliant save with her foot kept the score at 1-0.

Mansfield used the extra player to their advantage and crossed the ball in only to be turned into the net with an own goal from Gemma Wardle. Gemma Charlton made a couple of individual runs into the opposing penalty area, but the keeper was in the right place at the right time and prevented any goals. Mansfield then played another through ball and again Kassie Wallis made another great save to keep the score down. Cleethorpes played a couple of over the top balls which left the Mansfield defence only to be ruled offside. Just before half

With another Mansfield goal soon after half time, the mountain was too big too climb and a Mansfield cross from the right saw it go across the goal mouth for a tap in. The game was then finished by another stunning goal by a Mansfield winger from outside the area into the top corner. Game finished 6-0.

Saturday 25th October saw the “A” team travel to Caistor to play Caistor Tennyson in the league. With a few players unavailable from last week 6 changes were made with 5 new players coming into the squad. Josh Thompson was in goal with Mikey Bleasdale from the Under 18's side making his debut at right wing back. Mark Smith continuing on the left with a new pairing of Matt Russell alongside Tom Wingate at centre half. Debutants Jamie Smith, Sebastian Blyth in midfield alongside the returning

Ben Cadman was a sub who was also making his first appearance. The Owls came straight out the blocks and after ten minutes a Bleasdale cross fell too Milne who controlled it with his knee and fired into the bottom corner from 15 yards. They continued to make more chances but was caught on the counter attack with a Caistor forward firing in from outside the box. They then found themselves 2-1 down with minutes remaining in the first half when Caistor worked in from the right and smashed the ball home.

CleethorpesTownFC

Page Sponsor A quick response was required and it duly happened when Bleasdale played a long ball looking for Milne when the keeper and a Caistor defender got in a muddle, Milne nipped in scoring from a tight angle right on half time. The second half was a bit scrappy but the Owls got the ball in the net through a quality drive from 20 yards by Overend but was ruled out for an offside. Caistor scored the 5th goal of the game from a long ball that eluded the back four with the forward getting in to score what would be the winner. Thompson made a quality penalty save in the last few minutes as they pushed for an equaliser. On Saturday they travel to Louth to play Louth Old Boys in the Town Trophy, with a 2:15 kick off. SHAW LANE AQUAFORCE Shaw Lane Aquaforce F.C.was formed in 2012 with the merging of two clubs, Barugh F.C. (1991), one of Barnsley’s’ finest junior clubs, and Aquaforce F.C. (2007) the successful senior club who were causing quite a stir in the Barnsley and Sheffield leagues. Barugh Boys u11s was first entered into the Barnsley Junior League as the only team in the club. We were a small village team whose popularity created a lot of interest and soon developed into a club who initially played all our home games in the village of Barugh. With the development of ladies/girls we changed the club name to Barugh F.C. and introduced female teams into the club. In 2005 Barugh F.C. Were invited to play our games at Shaw Lane Sports Association to accommodate our growing membership. We gained F.A. Charter Standards and in 2007 we were awarded a £1,000,000 grant from the Football Foundation /Sport England to build new changing rooms and function rooms.

The Owl 12

We have currently 20 junior teams, girls and boys running from Shaw Lane and are currently the only Barnsley club with the F.A. Community Charter status. Aquaforce F.C. was formed in 2007 playing in the South Yorkshire Amateur League and soon began making a name for themselves. They were asked by the league to take the place of a struggling Worsborough Common F.C. side in the County Senior League and this prompted the introduction of coach Doug O’Connor to take the first team while Kev Wright continued to coach the second team. Players needed to be added to a small first team squad and O’Connor made his signings, which saw them, enjoy an incredible run losing only 2 league games and gain promotion to the Premier League. They also reached the League Cup semifinal and showed great fighting spirit to win the Rosehill Cup, equalising with seconds of normal time remaining and then going on to win 3-1 in extra time.

In 2012 under our new name, Shaw Lane Aquaforce F.C. had a team capable of an assault on the County Senior Premier League with a mix of young and experienced players. The season was hard fought and the club suffered only 1 defeat, which was incredibly their opening fixture!

The next stage in our plan was to enter into the North East Counties League. We had entered into an agreement with our Shaw Lane partners, Barnsley Rugby Club, to share their pitch and consulted with officials from the NCEL to ensure that the ground came up to the conditions required. The biggest problem was to lengthen the pitch by 16m, which meant we had to remove a massive bank to do this. To compound matters we were going through arctic weather conditions, which lasted through Easter 2013, and this had a frustrating effect on things, as the time schedule was tight. Nevertheless we worked hard and managed to complete the work on time, despite rumours to the contrary!

RECORDS:

www.cleethorpestownfc.co.uk

We had all the work endorsed by the F.A. and all that was left now was to attend the NCEL AGM and secure the votes from the League members. We were not accepted into the league, which was unprecedented and would ultimately mean that league rules were changed to ensure that this could never happen again. The only course that was for us now was to appeal to the F.A.! We attended the hearing at Wembley along with league officials from the NCEL and were successful in our hearing. We were now officially promoted into the NCEL! Throughout all of this we felt that we had done no wrong and conducted ourselves with dignity, resisting any temptation to attach blame for what Shaw Lane Aquaforce F.C. had had to endure. Our season 2013/14 was a big step into the unknown for us both on and off the field. We got off to a great start and began playing good football despite doubters saying that football and rugby couldn’t work side by side, picking up points along the way. By Christmas we had become league leaders but we never opened up

any sizeable leads and were always aware of other clubs being in striking distance. The wet winter months took their toll on the playing surface at Shaw Lane and we were constantly battling against the rain with games being postponed to create a fixture pile up at the end of the season. Our form after Christmas suffered but we held on and although we didn’t win the league, we gained promotion at our first attempt, a remarkable achievement by anyone’s standards. What was equally important is that we did this with attractive football on the field and with grace and dignity off it. We made friends and gained the trust of other clubs! We know promotion to the Premier league is another huge leap for us in the 2014/15 season and we believe we can contribute to the quality of this league. We hope for success but we expect nothing!

“I have never seen my medal from the FA Vase win with Brigg since I threw it to my dad in the crowd to look after...”

Damien, you have played for an array of clubs throughout your career, what made you want to sign for CTFC? I've known Marcus Matty and Dave for a good few years and followed what they were doing here at Clee town, in the paper and on the Internet, and couldn't help but be impressed with there progress. When the chance came it was an easy one to make, as u can see from my previous clubs I've had to travel away from this town to play at a decent level, I just wish this opportunity came 10 years ago! From the 1st conversation I had with the management they new my situation and there happy for me to help out when I can. If I can help Brad and Miles in training in any way then ill be happy. As for my preparation for games I have my own strange little ways which ill keep to myself. So, take me back to the beginning, how did you first get into football? I'm not sure how I ended up in goal. I used to play outfield for my school then at weekends was in goal and I decided that was the place for me. I remember annoying my mother every Sunday when she was doing the ironing, I got her to throw rolled up socks across the room and I’d dive for them. We'd go through my whole sock draw, I told u I had weird ways! You joined CTFC in August 2014, how was the transition? I'd sort of retired from football but as former player you keep tabs on what's going on and who's doing what. In your head you think you can still do it. So when the call came from Clee Town it was really a chance to see if I could still perform at a decent level. Who did you make your debut against for The Owls and how did you find it? My debut was against Gresley in the FA Cup. I knew I was playing in the FA Vase game the week after but I got a text after they had drew 0-0 at there place, “we need u Wednesday!” There's nothing like being thrown in at the deep end! The next few days I found myself thinking of the game and praying I didn't let any daft goals in and praying I didn't let anyone down. The game itself was a classic, we won 5-4 and the atmosphere in the changing room after the game was electric. How can u retire when you play in games like that!

The Owl 20

You won the FA Vase with Brigg Town in 2002, did you get to play at Wembley? How was the day? Yes we won the FA Vase which was special. Unfortunately Wembley was being knocked down so we played at West Hams ground. The whole weekend was something I’ll never forget. We had a bit of a reunion with the lads at the start of the season in a charity game and it was nice to see them after 10 years and we still had that bond. I still haven't seen my medal, I remember throwing it to my dad in the crowd to look after and he took it home with him. Marcus has had a successful time as the 'gaffer', why do you think this is? I've known Marcus for 20 years now and he's always had that respect as a player. He was always going to succeed as a manager, he gets his point across to the players in a way that the players listen and he knows how to handle players and knows what we wants out of his team. With Matty and Dave around him they make a good team. What can we expect from The Owls this season, mid-table? Top 6? Promotion? If they carry on progressing as they have then there's no one to fear in this league. When there in full flight going forward there unstoppable. Mistakes cost teams points, but if they can cut them out they'll out score anyone. Lastly, you have not played for a few weeks now because Brad Beattie has come back into the affray, will we be seeing you back between the sticks anytime soon? I didn't realise until the other that I'm exactly twice Brads age which is quite frightening! Brad is a good goalkeeper and will get better. If I can help him improve then great, if Marcus needs me to play I’ll be more than happy to oblige. I've always said I'm to old to now to be mardy over football. If Brad is put straight back in then fine, as long as the team benefits. I'm happy with what I've done in football on a Saturday and Sunday but I can see there's something special happening at this club and if I can be apart of it in anyway then i’ll be happy.
