NEW DIRECTOR OF SIXTH FORM
We are pleased to announce that Mr Toby Clouston has been appointed as the Director of The Sixth Form for the Effingham Schools Trust.
Toby joins us from Fullbrook School where he has spent the last four years as Deputy Head, successfully growing their Sixth Form, overseeing the development of the new Sixth Form building, and latterly heading up Teaching and Learning across the school. Prior to this, Toby spent four years at Ash Manor as Assistant Head responsible for both Teaching and Learning, as well as the development and evolution of their curriculum. The foundations of Toby’s teaching career were gained at Stepney Green School in Tower Hamlets, where he spent twelve years teaching History (he also specialises in Business Studies and Economics), going on to head up Key Stage 4 and then becoming Head of the Humanities Faculty. Toby was educated locally at St George’s College Weybridge and read International Politics at Leeds University.
During his time at Tower Hamlets, Toby also played semi-professional Rugby for Esher RFC, captaining the team during their seasons in the Championship. Toby is passionate about all sports and particularly enjoys supporting his eldest daughter who is a keen member of Horsley Girls football team.
Toby is very much looking forward to joining the EST community in September and is excited to help shape the future of the coeducational Sixth Form.
SIXTH FORM NEWS
Hi everyone,
I hope your week as been great. Here at the sixth form, many exciting things have happened! On Monday, the new Leadership Team were invited to the board room for a Celebration Tea with the previous team. It was a lovely event with delicious brownies, flapjacks and tea and a great opportunity to get to know the team.
Various trips took place such as G Live in Guildford on Tuesday. Some of our sixth form students were able to join other schools and show case the music they have been learning at school. On Wednesday Year 12 and 13 Politics pupils went to Parliament where they had a guided tour of the building and the House of Lords and Commons. They also visited the Supreme Court where they watched a hearing take place, and after had a nice meal at Wagamama’s. The Head Girl Team has been organising St T’s Annual Egg Rolling Competition, which promises to be an eggcellent event! There will be prizes for the best decorated and quickest eggs across the school (and staff). There is no greater, more intense race in the entire calendar so come along for some eggcitement. We have also been planning an exciting international charity project; all will soon be revealed, but for now all I can say is ‘toilets’.
Have a lovely weekend,
Amelia (Deputy Head Girl)
BOARDING NEWS
International Women's Day is a global celebration of women's achievements, progress, and contributions to society. It's a day that transcends borders, cultures, and backgrounds, bringing attention to the struggles women have faced historically and the ongoing fight for gender equality.
On this day, communities around the world come together to honour and recognise the remarkable achievements of women in various fields, including politics, science, arts, sports, and business. It serves as a reminder of the significant roles women play in shaping our societies and economies, often in the face of adversity and discrimination. For International Women’s Day we have a board in the games room to commemorate all the significant powerful women that the girls are inspired by. For this week the inspirational woman was Malala Yousafzai as she represents courage, resilience, and the unwavering pursuit of education and gender equality for women worldwide.
Over the weekend the girls had a trip into Staines-uponThames and did lots of shopping. It was a new shopping centre that we have not visited previously and had a variety of new shops.
During the week the lovely boarding staff created “the den room” which is going to be a room where the girls can relax and be in a quiet space together with friends.
FIONA RUTHERFORD
As part of International Women’s Day, we had the privilege of hosting Fiona Rutherford, who delivered an enlightening presentation on her experience working in law and for JUSTICE - an organisation striving for a fair, accessible, and equal justice system. Her insights were truly inspiring, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended!
MICHAEL HENDERSON
Michael Henderson our Co-Chair of Governors and his wife visited the Nuns in Sherborne and shared a Lenten Lunch with all the five Sisters living there. They were all in good spirits and send all their good wishes to the St Teresa’s community.
We would like to thank Michael for his service to the St T’s community over the last 30 years and are delighted that he will become a patron of the Trust.

MATHS MASTERCLASS
Our young and eager Year 5 mathematicians joined us last Friday for the third Royal Institution Maths masterclass. This time it was the turn of Olivia H, Charlie J, Amelia S-M, Alyssa Y and Candice L, who produced and presented a fabulous session on code breaking and ciphers. The Year 5 pupils were captivated by the variety of ciphers to break, which included the Caeser shift cipher, the Pig Pen cipher, and pupils making their own codewheels.

YEAR 8 TRIP TO SEE ROMEO AND JULIET
Year 8 went to the Globe Theatre in London to see a performance of Romeo and Juliet on Wednesday and all had a wonderful time.
SCIENCE CSI
The Science Department invited Year 8 families to a CSI family event as part of Science Week, where they had to work together to solve a burglary. Examining blood, fingerprints, fibres and fluid from the crime scene put them on the right path to find the culprit! Who turned out to be our own Mr Breeze!
PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITON
On Thursday 7th March, St Teresa’s hosted our Interschools Public Speaking Competition against Cranmore. Our two competing teams worked incredibly hard on their speeches and spoke with insight and confidence on their chosen motions.
Team 1 comprised of: Ava S, Ella G and Mille H who stepped in as chair, in place of Sofia C. They debated whether or not the long summer holidays has become outdated in the modern world.
Team 2: Evie T, Hayley P and Amber R discussed whether make up encourages confidence or insecurity and shared some very personal ideas and research on their chosen topic.
Cranmore were strong competitors but we are delighted that Team 1 won the competition, the judges were very impressed all round with the high standard of the speeches from all that took part.
Congratulations!

ONE OCEAN T-SHIRT COMPETITION
This year we thought we’d give you all the opportunity to design the new One Ocean t-shirt that we’ll use for our One Ocean trip! This means we need you to get creative and design a t-shirt that embodies everything about One Ocean. Think about sustainability, sea creatures, plastic pollution, waste reduction and more! We’re looking for something that represents everything you’ve learned and want you to be as imaginative as possible.
Once all the submissions are in from all the schools, the entries will be reviewed by a board of KBR staff who will pick the winning t-shirt out of all the entries! The winning design will be transformed by the KBR graphics team so it’s ready for the t-shirt printing. This design will be printed onto the t-shirts and made for everyone to take home. There will be one winner overall, and a prize for the runner up from each school.
For the t-shirt competition, there are a few rules you need to follow to make sure you’re in with a chance of winning!
Your design must have #KBROneOcean in it
You cannot include your school logo (the competition is running across multiple schools!)
We’d love it if you could include the One Ocean logo in your design!
You can design it by hand or on the computer
You can include a bio with your entry, explaining your picture, what it means and how it relates to One Ocean
Make sure your drawing is big! Small details won’t be picked up on the final t-shirt
Any writing must be clear and readable
Make sure that your t-shirt design fits on the layout.
The designs must be completed no later than 4pm on the 22nd April 2024. Please hand them in to Mrs Menzies or Miss Bird who will then collect them.
If you would like a paper copy please go and see Mrs Menzies.

Horse Breeds: Dutch Warmbloods
There are over 400 horse breeds in the world, one of them is the Dutch Warmblood. The Dutch warmblood breed has been around for almost a century, and are typically used for showjumping and dressage, but they learn quickly so can be used for most disciplines.
They can vary in temperament, but are known to be sharp and a bit challenging. And the long-standing bloodlines of the breed can make them expensive to purchase. Therefore not all Dutch Warmbloods are suitable for a first horse.

Design an Easter Egg!
Use one of the pre-made paper templates found in the equestrian office or design your own.
You can take it home, or if you pin it on the board STE will use them in the Easter Egg Hunts over the holidays!
This Week
This week we considered the third account from Mark’s Gospel where Jesus reaches out and draws in those on the margins. On this occasion we looked at the healing of Bartimaeus (Mark 10:46-520)
It is always significant when we hear the name of an individual in the Gospels. The name Bartimaeus means ‘Son of the Unclean.’ Clearly this was a term of abuse hurled at the poor man in the account, his blindness being seen as some sort of punishment for his sins or the sins of past generations. Jesus rejects this totally. Instead, as Bartimaeus calls out to him, Jesus removes his blindness.
Blindness, in the Holy Scriptures, is always more than a physical ailment. It refers to that inability, spiritually, to see what is all around us. In this season of Lent we are called to remove that blindness in two ways. Firstly, we are called to recognise the needs of those around us, needs that so often we don’t even notice. We, like Jesus, by recognising those needs can also bring restoration to wholeness to those we see. And secondly, we are called to see ourselves with clear sight. Yes, on the one hand, to recognise where we fall short and need to change, but even more importantly, to recognise that God has made us good. We are wonderfully made! We are God’s work of art! While we may fall short, we need to be reminded that this is how God sees us, this is the fullness of life, the wholeness that God calls us to rediscover. And Lent is a great time to remove the blindness from our eyes and to see things as they really are once again.
