Message from the Headmaster

I would like to commend the Year 9 pupils who embarked on their initial training for the Duke of Edinburgh Award last weekend. In cold and damp conditions, they excelled in their effort and attitude towards the challenges put before them and navigated their way over 16km of countryside before heading home on Sunday afternoon.

Congratulations to Artom and Matthew in Year 9 on their superb medal winning performances in the World Scholar’s Cup Surrey/London round, which required them to study a contemporary curriculum and compete against other schools. They have both qualified for the global round, an outstanding achievement.

Congratulations to our U13 Hockey team who played in the National Finals this week. They had some noticeable victories en route to the quarterfinals where they were knocked out by the eventual winners of the competition. We finished the highest ranked school in Surrey.

The Spring Soiree was a joyous celebration of the incredible musical talents at Cranmore. Pupils from across both Prep and Senior School performed pieces of music from classical composers, such as Pachelbel and Beethoven, to more contemporary artists, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers. I am encouraged to see that there is a noticeable rise in the level and standard of musical performance across the school.

Thank you to the Eco Council for presenting their findings from the recent school pupil survey. Members of the group highlighted the important changes we have put in place to reduce the amount of food wastage at school; the 120 tree saplings that we planted on the Henderson Fields that were donated by the Woodland Trust; and conservation of water in recognition of World Water Day on Wednesday.

We are all excited about the CPA ball this weekend. I look forward to seeing many of you there for what promises to be a thoroughly enjoyable event.

World Scholars Cup

St Teresa's hosted the World Scholar's Cup Surrey/London round on Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 March 2023. Two Year 8 Cranmore boys - Artom E and Matthew R took part in the competition, which involved them studying a contemporary curriculum and then competing against other schools in four events - team debate, collaborative writing, scholars challenge and scholars' bowl. As part of celebrating The Effingham Trust's value of 'Intellect', seven pupils participated in the second round of the Year 7 'Mastermind' competition on Tuesday 21st March. Each of the finalists had achieved one of the two best scores in his class in the first online round. They faced 10 challenging general knowledge questions in front of an enthusiastic Year 7 audience in the Auditorium. Congratulations to the winner of this round: Cameron from 7CM! We look forward to the third and final 'specialist' round next Tuesday 28th March.

Eco Council Assembly

The Eco Council spoke in assemblies this week.

“We have decided to focus on plastic use and the impact of our rivers and oceans, waste and biodiversity. So far, since September we have undertaken an audit to understand what we do well and what could be improved. The biggest problem by far, is the food waste. Thank you for completing the survey and for scraping your plates to help us find out just how much food is actually wasted in a typical week. It was also noted by the dining room staff that the wastage during the food weighing week was a little less than usual.

We are going to trial a system whereby you ask for a portion size; if you are extra hungry or not very hungry when you collect your lunch.

In May, we are hoping to apply for Cranmore’s first Eco Schools Green Flag. By helping us reduce food waste and engage with other projects coming soon, we could be successful in gaining this award. We cannot do it without you!”

Effingham Trust Consent Talk

On Monday afternoon, 8s from both Cranmore and St Teresa’s had on consent in Mairlot Hall. They developed their knowledge following on from the Schools workshops. They learnt about the law of discussed key terminology. Working in groups, they gave advice to characters in real life scenarios.

Music News

My congratulations to young pianist, Barnaby H (7MC) who performed a Grade 4 piano piece, ‘Forty Winks’, by Tanner, during assembly as well as, Charlie W (7MC), who performed a Grade 5 piece, ‘Hornpipe’ by McDowall, with style and class during senior assembly. Charlie was awarded a Distinction for this excellent performance.

Congratulations to all the boys who performed in the Spring Soiree on Thursday evening. Myself, Mrs Thornton and the music staff who were present at the concert, felt really proud of what the pupils achieved and the high standard of music they displayed.

On Friday, Mrs Brewster, our theory and oboe teacher, gave a demonstration in assembly. Not only did she perform on her oboe but she also played her cor anglais. Much like the oboe, this beautiful instrument has a double reed but in contrast, has a deeper, fuller tone. Any pupil wishing to have a taster session on either of these instruments, or in fact any of the instruments taught here at Cranmore, should approach Mrs Thornton or Mr Harris.

Sports Update

Hockey National Finals - Last 8!

Our U13A hockey team did superbly well at the National Finals on Monday. The team won 3 of their 4 pool matches, including a dominant display against Millfield. In the quarter finals, Cranmore lost 1-0 to Taunton, the school that went on to be eventual tournament winners. Cranmore can be very proud of their effort, having secured 3rd in the Regionals, the team finished the Nationals as the highest ranked Surrey school. Well done boys!

Hockey matches have also taken place this week against Thomas's Battersea, KES Witley, Danes Hill and the U13s are playing Downsend tomorrow.

The U14s rugby 7s team played at the Rosslyn Park 7s on Tuesday and faced some tough competition. Two great performances produced two wins against worthy competition, Brentwood School and Caterham. Last Friday, our U12s 7s team played at the Surrey 7s festival. The adverse weather meant skills were truly tested but Cranmore produced some great performances. Our U13s Rugby 7s team played in the Rosslyn Park 7s festival yesterday and hope they had an enjoyable experience.

The cross-country squad featured at the Danes Hill U8 to U13 event on Wednesday with Cranmore having some outstanding results.

The refurbishment of the indoor cricket nets is now complete which has included the extension of both the tracks and nets maximising the use of our 5 indoor cricket nets. Also, we now have 2 outdoor portable cricket nets and a new side screen ready for the cricket season ahead.

Play Your Way To Wimbledon

Play Your Way To Wimbledon - Friday 28th April

ESTA is excited to running the Play Your Way to Wimbledon event on Friday 28th April from 4:30pm at St Teresa’s. This event is open to girls and boys aged 11-14 (born 2009-2012) and is a fantastic opportunity to literally play your way to Wimbledon! The winner of this event goes through to the county finals with the potential to make it to the national finals held on the grass courts of Wimbledon.

There are certificates, prizes and medals for players. Parents are very welcome to come along to watch the matches and we hope to have a BBQ at the clubhouse if the weather is good to us!
