Message from the Headmaster

We had an action-packed week celebrating World Book Day. We welcomed author and illustrator Chloe Inkpen to Cranmore to inspire some of our younger readers; held the Battle of the Books final during assembly for the older pupils; enjoyed a special book-themed lunch; and hosted a carousel of activities in the library. There was also a wonderful visual spectacle on Friday as pupils and staff dressed up as their chosen literary character.

On Wednesday, we hosted an IAPS qualifying swimming competition. Cranmore pupils were joined by peers from Kings College, Notre Dame, Newland House, Abbot’s Hill, Kings House and The Lady Eleanor Holles school. Our swimmers performed extremely well and we are looking forward to confirmation of who has qualified for the National Finals which will be held at the London Aquatic Centre in June. Whilst the Six Nations will be taking a break this weekend, our U10A and U11A rugby players will be competing in the equally exciting Surrey rugby tournament tomorrow and we wish them the best of luck.

We are delighted that pupils from both Cranmore and St Teresa’s will once again participate in the Grange Park Opera production of Tosca. Selected students will be attending rehearsals in London and at West Horsley Place, before performing later in the Summer term. It is a unique opportunity for pupils to be involved in the renowned production.

Battle of the Books

Over the past two weeks, pupils in Year 7 and 8 have been competing in a Battle of the Books knock-out tournament in the English classes. They each selected a book that they thought was a contender for the title of the Best Book in World, and they gave speeches in front of their classmates arguing why they believed this to be the case. Group winners were then put through a further test of being asked unexpected questions about their book by their English teacher and a class winner was then selected from every group. On Wednesday, the six class winners performed their speeches to the rest of the Senior School. All Senior pupils voted for their favourite during their English lessons and the winner was announced in Friday’s Thomas A who were chosen as the winner and runner-up in

It was wonderful to see two young recorder players perform with such style and elegance during senior assembly. Freddie B (7CM) and Ollie P (7MC) played two duets: the folk song ‘Dives and Lazarus’ and the ever-popular ‘Greensleeves’. They were both awarded a Distinction for their performance.

We enjoyed another superb assembly performance by Billy W (9EB) on the piano. He played ‘Scary Stuff’ by Sarah Watts with a real sense of style.

Sports Update

Preparation for the IAPs Hockey Finals in 2 weeks' time continues to progress well for our U13 1st team under the guideship of Mr Williams and Mr Down. This was evident with a 2-1 win over Cranleigh on Wednesday. On the same afternoon, 8 Cranmore U13 teams played Cranleigh in a very competitive and enjoyable afternoon.

Year 7 & 8 PE continues with Racquets, with the strategical and tactical disciplines of the sports explored. Scholarship and Performance included both S&C and cricket nets.

Our Cross-Country Squad (U9s - U13s) performed superbly well at Highfield. We had many top 10 finishers, including Freddie W who came first, and Henry C who came 2nd in the U11 category amongst over 130+ competitors. The U11 and U9 team finished 2nd in their respective age groups against 28 other schools. U10s team came 8th, U12s team came 6th and our U13s team came 4th. Well done to all our runners.

Thought for the week:

How will you develop spiritual discipline?

The Transfiguration

After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.

Matthew 17:1-2

MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS FOR LENT 2023

The Gospel of the Transfiguration is proclaimed every year on the Second Sunday of Lent. During this liturgical season, the Lord takes us with him to a place apart. While our ordinary commitments compel us to remain in our usual places and our often repetitive and sometimes boring routines, during Lent we are invited to ascend “a high mountain” in the company of Jesus and to live a particular experience of spiritual discipline – ascesis – as God’s holy people.

Let us Pray: Our Father

Hail Mary

1 minute silence

“Lenten penance is a commitment, sustained by grace, to overcoming our lack of faith and our resistance to following Jesus on the way of the cross.”

In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
