Message from the Headmaster

The CPA ball was an incredible success on Saturday and a wonderful way to celebrate Cranmore’s 55th anniversary. The Sports Hall was transformed for the evening and parents and staff thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful entertainment that brought our school community together. Thank you to the CPA parents for their heroic efforts; it was a very memorable occasion.

On Monday, parents from across the school took the opportunity to join us for tours of the new Science and Technology Centre, which were conducted by our Year 9 pupils. The feedback on the classroom layouts, the abundance of space and the wealth of resources was very well received and the pupils were incredibly proud to show off the facility that will be open for lessons when they return in April.

There was great excitement on Wednesday with the House Music Competition across the Upper Prep and Senior School. The inter-house rivalry was evident with pupils and staff vying for the trophy. Congratulations to Stokes House who were announced as the winners with their rendition of the Beatles classic, Yellow Submarine

Well done to the pupils who fundraised and donated to Harlequins Foundation in support of underprivileged pupils in Africa. The fundraising manager from the Foundation, Andrew Warner, came to Cranmore to thank the pupils and explain how the funds would help to support projects for children from Lesotho. Good luck to those Year 9 pupils travelling to Barbados today; I am confident you will have a wonderful adventure and bring back a wealth of knowledge and experience from your trip.

I would like to wish everyone a restful Easter and I look forward to seeing you back at school after a well -deserved break.

Congratulations to Noah B. in Year 9 and Oliver M. in Year 7 for achieving 'Highly Commended' in the district round of the Rotary Young Writer competition. The competition attracted over 400 hundred entries from schools across the district of Bookham and Horsley. The theme this year was 'Peace'. Both pupils were praised by the judges for their thoughtful and original approach to the subject.

CCF NEWS

On Saturday, cadets from both schools went paintballing. The cadets were split into two teams consisting of both boys and girls. The teams competed against each other doing a variety of tasks, which included obtaining fighter jet batteries from the opposing team in a Star Wars themed area, and a zombie head from a graveyard. The cadets all applied their skills learnt throughout their time at CCF to sneak around the areas unseen and complete the tasks to win. It was a very enjoyable experience at paintballing; a great way to work with the other cadets, all whilst learning valuable skills for the future such as teamwork, some leadership skills, listening skills, shooting skills, communication skills, and many more.

The cadets all worked well together and fought tremendously leading to a conclusion of a draw.

ROTARY YOUNG WRITER COMPETITION

House Music Competition

The theme for this year’s House Music competition was the House colour. All pupils in Years 4 to 9 took part in this event on Wednesday afternoon and it was adjudicated by Mrs Thornton and Mr Cox.

Stokes were the eventual winners, with their rendition of ‘Yellow Submarine’. Congratulations!

Cranmore STEM Club has worked on a sustainable, efficient and a cheaper version of a motion sensor using Raspberry Pi (Python coding) to make it more affordable for a wide range of consumers. Our team consisted of 10 dedicated members who devotedly worked on the project including hardware and software. We worked day in and day out to create a motion sensing project comprised of a: PIR sensor, a Raspberry Pi, and along with python code which mainly leads to communicate motion and overall bringing this project to success. The STEM team has done rigorous research on how to save on electricity ,using cheaper but efficient inventions which can help our community to have a positive impact by savings energy in our day-to-day life. We didn’t look too far to create something innovative as we genuinely thought the current issues that we face every day are ‘the waste of electricity usage’ and how we can reduce it easily. We had some initial struggles; however we had decided to use a motion sensor by the entrance of a room that will facilitate the turning of the lights on and off. For instance, if consumers walked into a room, the sensor would detect the movement and the lights will turn on automatically. Once everybody is out of the room, the lights will turn off by detecting no motion.

For the hardware side, one of our team members has completed the main design for the chassis in CAD as well as, soldering and organizing the purchasing of the required components. Two of the project members Dominic and Cavell have coded the main communication between the Raspberry Pi and the PIR sensor, furthermore the communication between the lights and the Raspberry Pi. The other members of our team designed the chassis before the CAD stage for the components to go in. We have demonstrated that we can work together as a team and come together to enjoy making something that will help our environment and having fun while doing it. We embrace interpersonal communication and leadership skills whilst we explore how to fix the world’s most important problems of using electricity and making it as sustainable as possible. Other members of our team Artom, Elliot O, Theo, Oliver M, Sebastian S, Harry and Daniel have been working on our presentation for the final submission and thereafter hoping to present in London and also filming a YouTube video; where the STEM team are interviewed and explain the project and how it all came together. We all researched, accumulated our final ideas, and then designed this project to help our environment, whilst documenting the process of coding and designing of the chassis in CAD. Our aspiration is to achieve bringing down the amount of energy wasted by turning off the lights that are not in use. Research showed by IDA states that up to 30% of indoor power is wasted just because of not turning off the lights. By reducing the amount of power used would eventually reduce the power consumption and the overall electricity production of the UK national grid.

Thought for the week:

How will you embrace the mystery of salvation?

A

Prayer for Lent

Lord, no longer will I shut the door when I hear you knocking. Father, by faith I happily accept your gift of salvation. God, I am ready to trust you as my Lord and Saviour. Thank you for taking over my sins and granting me the gift of eternal life. Amen.

MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS FOR LENT 2023

To deepen our knowledge of the Master, to fully understand and embrace the mystery of his salvation, accomplished in total self-giving inspired by love, we must allow ourselves to be taken aside by him and to detach ourselves from mediocrity and vanity. We need to set out on the journey, an uphill path that, like a mountain trek, requires effort, sacrifice and concentration.

Let us Pray: Our Father

Hail Mary

1 minute silence

In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
