Message from the Headmaster

Before the snap of cold weather descended on us and temporarily disrupted our week, there was much to celebrate. Our rugby teams competed in the Surrey Festival and I was delighted that they all performed exceptionally well, with our U9 and U11 teams remaining undefeated throughout the competition. Our cross country teams impressed at their fixture achieving some first places. Our Senior School Council representatives had an insightful and enjoyable trip to the Houses of Parliament. On hearing that Cranmore pupils were there, our local MP came to find us; he was impressed with the questions and suggestions for parliamentary bills that pupils put forward. To celebrate International Women’s Day we had an assembly highlighting the importance of a world free from bias, stereotypes, and discrimination.

There was an opportunity for the Year 9 School Development Team to visit the new Science and Technology building to select a presentation screen and put forward recommendations for the new labs and classrooms. After a short interlude mid-week, we continued with the pupils with workshops and experiments building rockets, to celebrate the beginning of National Science Week.

Photography Competition

Thank you to Otis W, Barnaby H and George H for their submissions for the Rotary Club Young Photographer competition. They received some very positive feedback from the judges, with a winning entry from Harriet at St Teresa’s going through to the next round. Ian Taylor of the West Horsley division commented “My conclusion was simply and perhaps predictably that good photography can showcase buildings of all eras, and we are fortunate to have entrants who have responded so effectively. Thank you and well done to everyone!”

This week the Senior members of the School Council had a very interesting trip to Parliament. We were taken on a tour inside the Palace of Westminster which included the House of Lords, the House of Commons and Westminster Hall. The pupils took part in a workshop to learn about the history of democracy and the law-making process. We had the opportunity to meet with Sir Paul Beresford, our local MP, who was interested in the pupils' views on immigration and electric cars.

Parliament Trip

Year 9 School Development Team

The School Development Team was set up in September to discuss the growth of the school, encouraging innovation and leadership. On Monday, the team were invited on a tour around the school building with Mr Everitt and Mr Savvides to hear their views and ideas on the new space. They came up with some very thoughtful ideas, including how wall art could improve the space, the use of the different classrooms and how technology can best be used to augment the pupil experience. We look forward to their continued input as pupils move into the space next term.

STEM Workshop

Our U14s represented Cranmore at the Surrey Rugby Festival on Tuesday at Caterham School. There were 40 teams taking part making up 8 pools before the knockout stages. Cranmore had some fantastic results in pool H:

 vs Glyn School: 38 - 0

 vs George Abbot School: 19 - 14

 vs Hoe Valley School: 57 - 0

 vs Reigate Grammar School: 31 - 12

These impressive results meant Cranmore progressed onto the knockout stages along with 7 schools including Hampton, Whitgift, Epsom College and John Fisher. Cranmore played St John's in the quarter-final and unfortunately lost, but it turned out to be against the team that went on to win the tournament. Cranmore gave a very good showing and should be proud of their efforts.

Racquets continued in Year 7 & 8 PE which took the form of some team badminton.

Year 9 pupil, Josh S, went overseas the week before last to represent New England Knights (Rhode Island) at Ice Hockey. He played in two tournaments, one in Florida called the Presidential Power Play cup and secondly, a tournament in Buffalo which was called the Falls Classic which was an international tournament. The team went undefeated against some very strong teams. Well done Josh.

Thought for the week:

How does Jesus speak to you?

A Prayer for Lent

Dear Lord, Without You I can do nothing. By Your Spirit help me to know what is right and to be eager in doing Your will. Teach me to find new life through penance. Keep me from sin, and help me live by Your commandment of love. God of love, bring me back to You. Send Your Spirit to make me strong in faith and active in good works. Amen.

MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS FOR LENT 2023

Dear brothers and sisters, may the Holy Spirit inspire and sustain us this Lent in our ascent with Jesus, so that we may experience his divine splendour and thus, confirmed in faith, persevere in our journey together with him, glory of his people and light of the nations.

Let us Pray: Our Father

Hail Mary

1 minute silence

“We need to listen to Jesus. Lent is a time of grace to the extent that we listen to him as he speaks to us.”
