TRIBUTE TO THE VISIONARIES

Keeping the Vision “We want to take this Club to the next level and make it one of the premier country clubs in South Florida…” – Phil Smith, Dec. 2004 (CRCC News)

when Phil Smith purchased the Club, until his passing in December of 2016, Phil never lost sight of the vision he had for Coral Ridge. In 2004 Phil put together a partnership team who, like himself, had deep roots in the community and a shared vision as to how CRCC could continue to play a role in the Fort Lauderdale community. These partners included Jim Scott, Terry Stiles, Norman Tripp, Matt Morrall, Mike Dayhoff, Ed Pozzuoli, Greg Humphries and J.J. Sehlke. Over the past 12 years leading this Partnership team, and as an active Member of the Club, Phil managed to create a culture of giving back to the community and creating life-long relationships. A man who knew how to maximize

opportunities, Phil Smith inspired others to do the same and championed a spirit of generosity. Phil was convinced that Coral Ridge would “evolve into a club that has a waiting list for prospective Phil Smith members.” Three years after making that statement, in 2007, the Club reached capacity and started a membership wait list and in March 2016 a wait list for golf memberships was once again established and exists today. for Coral Ridge to bring the Cup back home! Lauderdale Yacht Club quickly took the lead 5-1, with the only win from Coral Ridge in the juniors coming from Bobby Genovese. himself, the one that he called home. In the early 1960’s the Jones’ vastly improved the Club with the construction of the Clubhouse, tennis courts, and Olympic-size swimming pool. In 1994, the terrace was added to the Clubhouse, affording Members the opportunity to enjoy casual dining with picturesque views of the golf course. Over the years, the classic Robert Trent Jones golf course has remained the core of the Club, drawing accomplished players and beginners alike. Jones took pride in saying,“The sun never sets on a Robert Trent Jones golf course.”

Phil Smith was not alone in seeing the Club’s potential. The development of the land that the Club now stands on started with the construction of the Floranada Golf Course in the 1920’s but was halted when the stock market crash in 1929 forced the Board Members to give it up. In 1954 Coral Ridge Country Club was founded by golf ’s most innovative architect, Robert Trent Jones and his wife, Ione. Mr. Jones saw an opportunity in the unfinished course and devised a plan to mold the land to his intricate specifications. Construction for Coral Ridge Country Club began in September of 1954 and the Club opened in February of 1955 with Mr. Jones as President. He had a vision of building and owning his own club; a true, traditional private Club with a challenging, championship golf course. In his career, Robert Trent Jones designed and redesigned over 500 courses, but CRCC is the only one he built for

a “home away from home” for the Members of Coral Ridge that has become the cornerstone of the CRCC Member experience. Ione and Robert Robert and Ione raised Trent Jones two sons, Robert Trent Jones Jr. and Rees L. Jones, who followed in their parent’s footsteps and, in their own rights, have each become world class golf course architects and continued to be involved in the management of Coral Ridge. Robert Trent Jones, Jr., went on to establish Robert Trent Jones II Golf Course

Raising Family Traditions While Robert Trent Jones brought his own brand of classic and challenging architecture to Coral Ridge – it was his wife Ione that initially set the social tone at Coral Ridge. It was her sense of graciousness and warmth and her uncanny ability to create

A Legendary Past Although Robert Trent Jones became a legend in his own time, he knew where credit was due. To avoid any confusion with the one and only “Bobby Jones,” he chose to add Trent (the river he was born near in England) to his name. Rees Jones commented that his father’s life “revolved around the game of golf and those associated with it.” Mr. Jones believed that golf should be a no risk, no reward sport and his designs encouraged daring play. His philosophy was to make every hole, “a hard par, but an easy bogey.” Many professional golfers have enjoyed playing the course, including Arnold Palmer, Sam Snead and Jack Nicklaus, to name a few. When Jack Nicklaus played CRCC he commented to Mr. Jones that it was indeed a great course,“but there was no risk, reward Par 5.” Legend has it, the very next day, Mr. Jones ordered a bulldozer to

make Hole #4 into a Par 5. Julius Boros, winner of 18 PGA Tour events, including three major championships including the 1952 and 1963 U.S. Opens and the 1968 PGA Championship, lived on the ninth hole and played until his very last day; passing away near the 16th hole where a bridge now commemorates his legacy. His wife, Armen Boros, is still a Member today. Coral Ridge has also hosted some of golf ’s greatest players in various tournaments over the years. One of the most notable tournaments that the Club hosts is the Ione D. Jones/Doherty Women’s Amateur Championship that Mrs. Jones brought to the Club and is now in its 85th year. The Doherty has hosted some of the biggest names in women’s golf including six World Golf Hall of Famers and a number of players who have gone on to successful professional careers such as Lexi Thompson, Morgan Presell, Patty Berg, JoAnne Carner, Babe Zaharias and Marlene Stewart Streit, as well as pros such as Natalie Gulbis, Michelle McGann, Vicki Goetze and Charley Hull.

Architects, eventually designing more than 270 courses in over 40 countries. In 2015, the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, a RTJ II design, was the first Open to be contested on a new course since his father’s course – Hazeltine in 1970. Rees has earned the nickname the “Open Doctor” for his redesign of courses in preparation for major championships. To date, he’s left his mark on seven U.S. Open venues, six PGA Championship courses, four Ryder Cup sites and has designed more than 100 courses. Included in Rees’ impressive list of golf course designs is the new Rees 9 course at the Club, which was the first course to be built in the city of Fort Lauderdale since the construction of the CRCC Championship course in 1954. After 10 years of working through various plans, and with a whole lot of persistence on Phil’s part, the Rees 9 opened in November 2015. At a cocktail reception commemorating the opening, Rees shared his sentiments that he is proud to see what the Club has evolved to today and his parents would feel the same.

KEEPING THE VISION

Building on a Legend’s Legacy After Mr. Jones passed away in 2000, his sons wanted to sell the club to a familyoriented individual rooted in the South Florida community. In 2004, the Jones’ family sold their beloved Coral Ridge Country Club to Phil Smith, a Member of the Club and CEO of Phil Smith Automotive Group, who owned dealerships throughout Florida, Georgia and North Carolina. It was Senator Jim Scott, a close friend of Phil’s and of the Jones family, who introduced Phil to the Jones brothers, culminating in a mutual respect and friendship. In a letter to the membership from the Jones family it was stated, “The new Partners have very exciting plans for the expansion and continued development of Coral Ridge Country Club into one of the country’s premier private country clubs, by preserving, enhancing and building on this legend’s legacy.” Upon the transfer of ownership, Jones, Jr.

Phil Smith was one of the top car dealers in the U.S.

stated, “Sharing the creation and development of CRCC was an enriching, fascinating and rewarding experience…Phil and his partners are strong, active members of the Fort Lauderdale community who will assure that CRCC continues to be a jewel.” Response from the surrounding community was overwhelmingly positive. Applications for membership skyrocketed and a sense of revitalization reverberated throughout the Club.

Phil Smith & Family: Expanding the Vision Phil grew up in South Florida where he attended Chaminade High School in Fort Lauderdale and graduated from FAU, earning a degree in accounting and finance. He described himself as a “rows-andcolumns kind of guy” — not flashy. Phil took his first job at an auto dealership selling cars while in college and had the opportunity to buy into a dealership in 1980, years later becoming one of the top 55 car dealers in the country. He had an entrepreneurial bent and

great business acumen. Local honors for Phil include Nova Southeastern University’s Entrepreneur of the Year, The Sun-Sentinel Excalibur Award for large business, Northwood University’s Outstanding Business Leader, Leadership Broward’s Leader of the Year, and Junior Achievement’s Business Leader Award. Mr. Jones laid the groundwork and Phil Smith and the Partners continued to improve facilities and services while establishing a renewed commitment to growing the game of golf and expanding the overall impact of the Club to the community. It can also be said that while Mr. Jones was often solely focused on golf, Phil had a broader range based on his own interests and those of his family and friends. Phil was an avid tennis player at the Club in his early days of membership and always felt that having “the best courts around” was a huge part of the success of our tennis program. While Phil didn’t spend much time at the CRCC Pool, he was a former lifeguard who spoke to the importance of swim instruction and water safety in a community

CORAL RIDGE COUNTRY CLUB

James & Kaelin worked in various roles at the Club. When Phil first bought the Club, James was only 9 years old and became the unofficial “entertainment director” for Kids Klub. James, now 21, attends the University of Alabama and works at Phil Smith Management when not at school. Just last summer, when on break from school, Kaelin was working as a CRCC summer camp counselor. Shawn and husband Charlie are regulars at most club events and Cali, age 7, is also active in the kids programs and camps offered today. With her children attending neighboring schools, Shawn has played an active role in the Club’s support of Christ

surrounded by water. Eventually Phil developed a passion for golf, although it was never that serious for him; it was the comradery he enjoyed over all else. Phil wanted to create a “family-friendly environment that could be enjoyed by all ages” so with that goal in mind, membership offerings were revamped which allowed many young families the ability to join and club programs were expanded on all fronts. The Club started getting busier on an everyday basis. Phil and his family became a part of the Coral Ridge tapestry. Phil & Susan didn’t miss a Friday night.Their table was always filled with friends and family at holidays and club events. Phil was often heard quoting his daughter Shawn who said, “I think my dad bought the Club just so he had a place to hang out with his friends.” Phil, Susan and Shawn wove their charitable endeavors into the patchwork of CRCC as well, paving the way for many Members to become involved and do the same. Phil’s three grandchildren; James, Kaelin and Cali have grown up at the Club. All three have participated in the bevy of children’s programs offered and, when old enough,

Church School and Cardinal Gibbons. Susan stated,“Phil loved everything about Coral Ridge Country Club. He loved the history, he loved the friends he met at the Club, and he loved its future.” Phil’s goal was to “make Coral Ridge Country Club a place you are proud to bring your friends, family, and associates.”

Building Bridges and Making Connections Phil saw his role at Coral Ridge as not only revitalizing the Club but seeing how the Club could revitalize the community by giving back. He left a personal example in the way he lived his life. While his gifts to our community will continue to make a contribution for generations, his impact on friends he has touched will endure until the last one of us is gone. He started the Men’s 9-Holers as a way to network and an opportunity to better one another. He was all about connecting people and building community through lifelong relationships. Phil didn’t make acquaintances, Phil made friends.

The “Phil”anthropic Effect Possibly the most lasting legacy that Phil Smith and his family have left for Coral Ridge Country Club is their generosity, care and support of people and organizations in the community. From local hospitals, charities, schools and churches, CRCC has hosted and supported countless events to foster a spirit of philanthropy. Three local high school golf teams practice regularly at the Club and over two dozen charitable organizations such as the Humane Society of Broward County, 4KIDS of South Florida, Holy Cross Hospital, Westminster Academy, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and Florida Atlantic University hold events at

CRCC which have raised millions of dollars. It was Phil, Susan and Shawn’s personal involvement with so many organizations that paved the way for Club to give back to the community. Eric Poms, CEO of the Orange Bowl Committee, said Smith was one of the key leaders in Broward County who expanded the Orange Bowl’s brand to all of South Florida. “He was such a statesman, passionate about everything we did. He was a guy who commanded a lot of respect because he did things for the right reasons,” he said.

Passing on the Tradition Always looking for ways to pass the baton to the next generation, the Phil and Susan Smith Family Foundation Scholarship annually awards up to $10,000 in scholarships to children of Phil Smith Management and CRCC employees. Brianna Jimenez, who now works at the Clubhouse Front Desk, is the daughter of Maylene Jimenez, Assistant Controller and HR Manager at CRCC, was one such recipient. One of Phil’s last acts included a $5 million gift, donated in August of 2016 with Susan, to Florida Atlantic University’s College to establish The Phil Smith Center for Free Enterprise at the College of Business. Phil’s desire was to pass on to his alma mater what he had learned about being an entrepreneur. He always believed that treating customers and employees well was extremely important. And in September, Phil gave a $7 million

gift to Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale to expand neurological care. The hospital will establish the Phil Smith ALS and Movement Disorder Clinic and rename its Neuroscience Institute after him. Phil designated $2 million of the gift as matching funds in a community challenge to bring first-class research and treatments to the area. “South Florida is in dire need of what [Holy Cross] is projecting to do,” said Susan. Even in his role at Coral Ridge, Susan said he saw himself as a steward,“He always looked at Coral Ridge as something he was given the opportunity to preserve and enhance for those who will love the Club in the future as much as he loved it during his lifetime.” It was the vision and persistence of Phil and the Partners that led to the revitalization of Coral Ridge Country Club, the development of the Rees 9, the creation of The Enclave community, and the donation of the Mangurian Park to the City of Fort Lauderdale. Coral Ridge Country Club has indeed made an impact on this community and will continue to do so for generations to come. With Phil’s vision for Coral Ridge in the care of the Smith Family, his Partners and the existing management, the goal will remain the same: to continually improve the Club and community while welcoming home all of our Members and guests.

Managing Partner J.J. Sehlke, Rees Jones and Phil Smith during the Rees 9 construction. ➤

Most everyone could call themselves an “FOP”, Friend of Phil. CRCC Partner and CFO of Phil Smith Management, Mike Dayhoff said, “Phil was the person everyone in the room gravitated to, but who could make everyone feel as if he was having a conversation with them one-on-one.” Mike explains, “whether it’s the person who went to grade school with Phil, or they played little league baseball together, or he sold someone their first truck 40 years ago, or a business partner, or a golf friend, or an old softball buddy, or a community leader, or even his adversaries on the other side of an issue, Phil created long-lasting personal relationships which only grew stronger over time. And along the way, he probably sold THEM a few cars too. Phil was someone with limitless energy, unbelievable focus, and extraordinary confidence, he had an aggressive business approach and a leadership style that the entire team would follow to the ends of the earth. He demonstrated how he wanted us to take care of customers by his own actions.”

C LU B EV E N T R E S E RVAT I O N P O L I C Y Special club events, wine dinners, Saturday night seafood buffets and holiday dining are popular events that sell out and require the purchase of special food and beverage products, equipment, entertainment, etc. Last minute un-replaced cancellations (including changes to the party number) are unfair to those Members who are turned away due to full capacity and cause the Club to incur unnecessary expenses if the reservation is not replaced. As a result, the Club must exercise a firm enforcement of the special event and holiday dining policy. • At the time of making your reservation we will charge your account 100% of the event price. • Please let us know if you have other Members dining with you, so we may contact them. • You may cancel 7 days prior to event, without being charged. • If you cancel less than 7 days prior to the event, you will have to pay 100% of the event price. Note: Should there be a wait list and we are able to fill your reservation less than 6 days prior to the event, your account will be credited in full.
