IT’S A PHRASE WE HEAR QUITE often, people in search of“old Florida.”A distant memory for some, and a romantic notion for others who never actually experienced it,it’s an endearing term for a time when life moved a little slower, was a little quieter and a lot more laid back.
Coral Ridge somehow manages to bridge the gap between looking ahead to the future and staying grounded in the history ofa classic golfclub. There are a few physical reminders ofa bygone era around the Club and throughout the classically laid-out Robert Trent Jones course, but perhaps it’s just the ambiance that settles in a few
From a recent Instagram message:
minutes after arrival that harkens to yesteryear. The absence ofthe hustle and bustle.
We can be very busy at times, especially during our major Club events, but we take extra measures to train staffin steps of service that are not lost when 30 people are present,or 300.
While we move ahead with more technology at the Club,we never want to lose sight ofthe oasis ofrelaxation we are to families and the outdoor escape for the sporting crowd. And our dedication to traditional events may be a little old fashioned, but it is also part ofthe fabric of CRCC that never gets “old.”
Our sunken bar is the center piece of our mid-century modern dining room and a cool throwback to a 1950’s architect’s idea ofkeeping the bar chairs low…not so tipsy…and eye to eye with the bartender.
One ofthe most commented on parts ofour table service.
Not just cute, these quaint doilies keep condensation from running offthe table and onto your lap!
“Old Florida” comes to mind in describing Coral Ridge Country Club. Pulling through the gate, one is met by an understated yet elegant clubhouse that is a reminder of the club’s beginnings in the 1950s. The legendary course architect, Robert Trent Jones, laid out the routing just north of Ft. Lauderdale, and the recent renovation by son, Rees Jones, provides for a fun and yet challenging experience. While the terrain is what one would expect from southeast Florida golf, the well-placed bunkers and fast undulating greens will test every aspect of a player’s game on a very straightforward course that lacks gimmicks. The vibrant energy of the club lacks pretenses, and it’s easy to see why they are at capacity.”

NO RIFLE NEEDED: Wide fairways permit some spraying of tee shots, but boundary line pines and target area traps are strategically spaced to prevent the too casual player who wanders.

Special club events, wine dinners, seafood nights and holiday dining are popular events that sell out and require the purchase of special food and beverage products, equipment, entertainment, etc.Last minute un-replaced cancellations (including changes to the party number) are unfair to those Members who are turned away due to full capacity and cause the Club to incur unnecessary expenses ifthe reservation is not replaced. As a result, the Club must exercise a firm enforcement ofthe special event and holiday dining policy.
•At the time ofmaking your reservation we will charge your account 100% ofthe event price. Please let us know ifyou have other Members dining with you.

WE HAVE A DRESS CODE that requires players to wear appropriate tennis attire, but we are far from the clubs that require only “tennis whites!”We do appreciate well-dressed players and frown on cutoffs, bathing suits, gym shorts, men’s tank
tops or blue jeans. However, correct footwear is another story.
There are two reasons for requiring “regulation”tennis shoes.First,a shoe with the wrong bottom or sole will damage our clay courts severely, making it impossible at times
to play after the person with the wrong shoes comes offthe court. In the past,we have had to close a court to make necessary repairs resulting in a cancelled reservation which followed. The second, and most important reason we require proper tennis shoes,is the fact that an improper shoe can cause a serious ankle injury.
A tennis shoe is designed to give lateral support when a player is moving side to side.A running shoe, for instance, not only has the wrong bottom but is also only meant to go forward, not side to side which a tennis player is doing constantly.
Just because it is a Nike or an Adidas shoe, doesn’t make it a tennis shoe. Both companies produce many different types of shoes.Examples ofshoes that we are seeing on the courts that are NOT tennis shoes are:running shoes, walking shoes, basketball shoes, fashion sneakers including the wildly popular “On Cloud Roger”brand along with other numerous brands.
Always understand that we can repair a court, but we can’t repair your ankle.

THE CHAMPIONSHIP 18 GOLF COURSE HAS 51 GREENSIDE BUNKERS. just offline coming into the green.Next time you find yourselfin one ofthese greenside bunkers, don’t panic! Follow these tips and get the ball up and out on the green!
It is next to impossible to go through a round ofgolf without finding yourselfin one ofthese bunkers. The runoffs in front ofthe greens will feed any ball that is
1 Dig your feet into the sand to get a feel for how firm or soft the particular bunker is playing.
2 Ball position inside the lead foot (in line with left heal for a right-handed golfer). This will help the golfer to hit the sand first, versus the ball!
3 Create a wide stance, creating more ofa squat position. Helps create stability during the swing.
4 Open the clubface to utilize the bounce ofthe club vs.the leading edge.Using the bounce creates less “dig”in the sand.
5 Grip is in a neutral position.Avoid forward pressing the grip which lowers the loft ofthe club.
1 Create a takeaway that is steeper, player should feel that they are “hinging”the wrists to get the club elevated.
2 Maintain the clubface in an open position throughout the swing! Ifthe clubface closes through impact,it will take too much sand while reducing the loft ofthe club. This combination will lead to another shot from the sand!
3 Match the length ofyour back swing and follow through! However far you take the club on the takeaway, swing it the same distance on the follow through.
4 Swing the club with the same tempo, back and through. A feeling ofgradual acceleration to impact.
5 Strike the sand first and follow through!

Clearly his passion is producing a pristine golfcourse. But in addition to over 20 years ofturfexperience,he is also an avid golfer with a current 1 handicap. In 2005-2008 he was in the Top 10 golfers at the GCSAA National Championship and 2006 & 2007 was the Champion in the Lowcountry Superintendent Championship.

Even more amazing than his career is how he has beaten the odds ofrecovering from recurring bouts ofcancer and how he has pushed back, barely skipping beat as a 5-time cancer survivor. His routine revolves around going to the gym every single day and as oftoday, has been cancer free for 3 years.
Jay and his brother Greg, also a golf course superintendent at Baltrusol Golf Club in New Jersey have been fierce competitors since their teens.Although Baltrusol may have a more celebrated history than Coral Ridge, younger brother Greg looks up to Jay for his tenacity in overcoming obstacles. Now,as best offriends, they compete as a team and can appreciate each other for different reasons.

SUMMER COURSE maintenance practices are scheduled for June 5 - 14 and again August 1 - 9.The weeks we close duringthe summer are the most important weeksofthe golfmaintenance schedule, ensuring the health ofthe turf.
TEES will be verticut to help with the grain. This helps with smoothness, water penetration and overall root development. The goal for the next season is a lower mowing height on tees to get them closer to green surfaces.
FAIRWAYS will again be aerified the first week ofAugust.Aerification helps with water movement through the profile as well as smoothing out the rough areas. Also,we will be topdressing fairways on Mondays to help with smoothness and firmness, which helps with balls rolling out.
GREENS will be double verticut, aerified with 5/8”tines and heavily top-dressed.This process relieves compaction by providing channels for water to enter the root zone, promotes healthy plant growth and smooths imperfections.
COLLARS will be scalped down to a lower height to help with smoothness.By scalping the collars,it provides a better surface but, along with the greens,it will take about 3 weeks to heal, provided we have good weather.
ROUGH will be aerified all summer along with an AerWay aerifier and top dressed in August. This will relieve compaction and promote better turfgrowth.
BUNKERS will be checked for sand depths to make sure 6”ofsand is spread evenly throughout the bunkers. In addition, we will be smoothing edges so balls will end up in the bottom ofbunkers. This process will go on all summer long.
HOW : Using an aerifier,5/8”plugs of soil are removed leaving holes for air to get beneath the surface ofthe turf.
WHY: To relieve soil compaction and create firm, smooth putting surfaces by controlling thatch and promoting healthy turfroots.
HOW : Thin, tightly spaced blades cut vertically into the turf, below the effective cutting height to penetrate and thin the turf canopy.
WHY: Helps reduce thatch build-up (which restricts air, water and fertilizer into the soil) and allows moisture and oxygen into the root system.
HOW : Sand is spread using a larger spreader after aeration or verticutting which allows the sand to permeate the turf.
WHY: Sanded surfaces promote tighter, finer textured turf, alleviate compaction, encourage upright growth,& help with thatch control and provide lower mowing heights.
