CRCC Turns 70!

Looking southeast, Hole 5

Our Club history and timeline is deep and rich at Coral Ridge.True appreciation for the gem

we call H.O.M.E.stems from this legacy:

JUNE1954 It was shortly after millionaire Arthur T.Galt sold 2,466 acres to Coral Ridge Properties, that Robert Trent Jones,Sr. (RTJ),entered a lease on 210 acres and began construction ofhis dream course, aiming for a mid-January opening.Home lots in the surrounding area began selling like hotcakes for as high as $36,000!

FEBRUARY 3,1955 Soft opening called “Founders Day.”A day for the founders to see and play the course, still in its infancy.RTJ (designer),Robert Abel (president) and Lew Worsham,(CRCCgolfpro who won the 1947 U.S.Open pictured below) presided. Days later the course opens to all Members, only a few weeks later than predicted. Not just a dream,it was considered a miracle!

FEBRUARY1955 Clubhouse designed by Charles McKirahan (1919-1964),Fort Lauderdale architect du jour at the time, opens with floor to ceiling windows offering a vista view overlooking the course.

FEBRUARY1955 First women’s golf tournament was held,as the press described it,for the “fair sex swingers!”

SEPTEMBER1955 First dinner dance attended by a large number ofprominent “Fort Lauderdaleans.”

JANUARY1956 Helen Lee Doherty Women’s Invitational moves from Miami Shores Country Club to Coral Ridge Country Club.Highlights:19-year-old Joanne Goodwin defeats Anne Quast in a 27-hole marathon where they tied every hole from the 17th to the 26th,then advanced to beat Cookie Swift Berger in the 36-hole finals.

JANUARY1957 American Golfers Club, a public short course and range, opens. It’s located on Federal Highway, adjacent to Coral Ridge and also owned by Jones.

JANUARY1957 Top world championship golfers Bob Toski and Claude Harmon join Ted Kroll and Lew Worsham for an exhibition match attracting hundreds ofspectators.

MARCH1961 Sam Snead and Arnold Palmer vie at Coral Ridge as a total of38 of the country’s leading players tee offat the 6th Annual Pro-Member Tournament.

C.1962 Two regulation clay tennis courts and a 25-yard L shaped heated pool with an 11-foot deep diving well open.

JULY1963 Julius Boros Homecoming Reception was held at Coral Ridge, after he won the 1963 US Open by “clobbering”Arnold Palmer. The Boros Family lived on the 9th green and were long-time Members at CRCC. Cy Young,Fort Lauderdale Mayor, presented Boros the key to the city.

• Please let us know ifyou have other Members dining with you.

• You may cancel 7 days prior to an event without being charged.

Dingles is coming to a court near you!

Dingles is a great game for 4 to 8 players on a court. It is not only fun and a great workout but also improves your diagonal groundstrokes and ending points. Before the start ofthe game, you need to take a line sweeper and extend the center line from the service line to the baseline. Here’s how it works:

• 4 players start on the baseline (extra players stand behind the 2 players on the baseline and rotate in after each point ends)

• Both players start a point at the same time rallying diagonal to halfofthe court including the doubles lines.

• When an error occurs, the player causing the error yells “Dingles!”and all 4 players play out the ball in play until the point is won

• To win a point,a team must win the “Dingles”point and the point just played. To win the game, the players can set the number ofpoints

Our teaching staffplayed Dingles every Monday after camp in the summer, and it has helped our doubles play.We generally play a game to 5. CRCC is planning on holding a Friday “Dingles”night or two this season. Get a group and have one ofthe teaching professionals show you how to play. You’ll get hooked!

How Play Impacts the Course

It is incredibly important to realize how play affects the health ofthe turf. Thank you for doing your part:

Unrepaired ball marks and divots are not only unsightly, they damage the surface and underlying turf.Repair ball marks and divots correctly.

Broken tees left on the tee green dull blades ofmowers and can get embedded in the turf.Pick up any tees and trash you see.

To minimize wear and tear on the turf, follow cart directional signs posted throughout the year.

Maintaining Our Courses Year-Round

Our course conditions have never been better, mainly due to the consecutive double aerifications completed during the last two summers. In addition, weekly maintenance on Monday afternoons, whether a full day during the summer or halfa day during the season, keeps the course in shape year-round.These closures have been one ofthe contributing factors for improving course conditions.

By adhering to these maintenance standards,we can provide the pristine playing conditions our Members desire and the Club is known for.

AERIFICATION

By using an aerifier,5/8”plugs ofsoil are removed leaving holes to be filled with clean sand which helps the roots to breath. This also helps to relieve soil compaction and create firm, smooth putting surfaces by controlling thatch and promoting healthy turfroots. It is best performed when the turf is healthy and actively growing which is why we typically complete these processes during the summer months,as well as being less disruptive ofMember play.

Without periodic aerification, an excessive amount of thatch can accumulate below the playing surface. Excess thatch acts like a sponge holding water near the surface, creating soft playing conditions and increasing the likelihood of turf decline and disease.

VERTICUTTING

During verticutting, thin, tightly spaced blades cut vertically into the turf, below the effective cutting height to penetrate and thin the turfcanopy. This helps reduce thatch build-up (which restricts air, water and fertilizer into the soil) and allows moisture and oxygen into the root system. Verticutting is typically done during noon closures in season to provide faster green speeds and smoother putting surfaces.

TOP DRESSING

After either aeration or verticutting,a large spreader is used to spread sand over the turfwhich is called top dressing. The sand permeates the turfby filling the holes or slices left by the aerification or the verticutting.Sanded surfaces promote tighter, finer textured turf, alleviate compaction, encourage upright growth, and help with thatch control and provide lower mowing heights. This process can be done at any time during the year, whenever aerifying or verticutting takes place and helps to create firmer greens.

PESTS

Mole crickets are flying insects that burrow tunnels in the ground where they lay thousands ofeggs, relative with ground temperatures. We typically treat for this pest with our Chipco applications. We try to have the chemical already in the soil when the crickets hatch so we can control the population before they cause severe damage to the turf.

Membership in High Demand

We are fortunate that the Club’s popularity has continued to grow.Since the fall of 2020,the number ofthose interested in joining has far outweighed the number of membership openings;membership demand continues to be at an all-time high.

Currently, membership is by invitation only and there is a high number ofcandidates who have been and continue to be proposed
