Pool Rules for Fun KIARRA ROPER | SALES & MARKETING DIRECTOR

Jumping into a New Season W E H AV E A L L H A D A L O N G

and stressful year, but with restrictions being lifted state-wide, launching an enormous cannonball into our heated pool seems an appropriate way to celebrate! Life is pretty much back to normal here at Coral Ridge. Luckily, Golf, Tennis and Pool operations were mildly affected by restrictions, but it’s great to see our F&B/Social operations follow suit! Our buffets have

been restored so Sunday Brunch and Seafood Buffets are back just the way you remembered them. Friday A’Fare is now accepting reservations and Kids Klub and Junior Club programs are back in full swing. Summer Camp remains scaled back this year due to the timing of changes in guidelines, but will be back to normal for summer 2022. Back to normal…those are words we will always cherish!

Remember to wear your sunscreen, but please, no running, diving or nonswim diapers. Ask lifeguards for noodles, kickboards and pool toys for the kiddos!

Lightning Alert! The Club has a lightning detection system so no matter where you are, if you hear a loud 15-second horn blast, please heed the warning and head for cover. Then listen for the “all clear” alert sound.

“I don’t do it often enough, but I want to express my gratitude for you and all the staff - your efforts make CRCC a special place.” – Gerald Catenacci • • • • • • •

New Member Remembrances… “While I spent most of my life in California, when I was a very young boy, my brother and I spent a few years living with my grandparents here in Seven Isles. My grandfather was friends with Robert Trent Jones and a member of CRCC, as best we can tell, from day one. His name was Joseph Van Poppelen. I have fond memories from when I was just 4 years old eating at the club and years later, following my grandfather around with his pull cart, leather cleated golf shoes and silk socks at CRCC. He played nine holes a day, 6 days a week until the end of his life. And now I come full circle, recently relocating to Fort Lauderdale and now proudly following in the steps of my grandfather, playing a classic track, much as he must have played it back in the late 50s, 60s and 70s. I’m looking forward to meeting you and others and enjoying all this historic club has to offer.” – Tim Hargarten

Have you been to a Member-Guest lately? Mueller, who was classically trained, was a Gold Medal winner at the Professional Culinary Exhibition in Bermuda and a featured chef at the James Beard House in New York City has been at CRCC since 2005. He and Chef Vito, our Sous Chef and pasta perfector, assisted by their hard working kitchen staff, combine their years of expertise to consistently create a truly satisfying dining event, day in and day out. But let’s not forget the level of service and ambiance that is provided by Brad King and the entire Food & Beverage team. From

that friendly greeting at the door, to the familiarity that our servers provide, hospitality is the first part of our H.O.M.E. club motto. One Member stated,“Employees are well-trained and polite and make one feel very comfortable.” Our spacious and quiet dining room (appreciated in the past year more than ever) is the perfect setting for that exceptional “culinary” experience. Summer is a great time to practice and work on your game since the league season has ended for the most part. If you are a doubles player, you only need one player to do this practice drill: Draw a line (with a ball tube) extending the center line to the baseline on both ends of the court. Warm-up: all shots including groundstroke volleys, overheads, serves, and serve returns, are all hit “diagonally,” first on the right side and then on the left side, keeping the ball on only half of the court. Then play 6 points. You serve 6 points, then your partner serves 6 points, both serving and returning from the right side of the court to start. After 12 points, change ends and do the same from the left side. You can also add ‘mandates’ such as: must serve and volley all first serves, must return and come to net when receiving all second serves, plus any other parts of your game that need some work. Remember that you are playing 6 points and not keeping score. This makes it easier to practice. Give it a try and hopefully you will see some good results.

TIPS FROM THE PROS

Change the Ball Flight The position of the left hand and wrist at the top of the backswing can influence the shape of the ball flight. Understand the position to change the flight. The left hand and wrist at the top of the backswing are in a cupped position resulting in an open club face. This position will encourage a fade/slice.

The left hand and wrist are in a flat position resulting in a square club face. This position will encourage shots with less curvature.

The left hand and wrist are in a bowed position resulting in a closed club face. This position will encourage a draw/hook

practices were completed in June and will be performed again in July. GREENS were double verticut, aerified with 5/8” tines and heavily top-dressed. This process helps relieve compaction by providing channels for water to enter root zone, promotes healthy plant growth and smooths out the little imperfections from construction. As we continue to aerify a few times, the greens will soften up. COLLARS were scalped down to a lower height to help with smoothness. All the collars were sodded during construction, and we were not able to get them as low as we wanted going into winter. By scalping the collars, it provides a better surface but, along with the greens, it will take about 3 weeks to heal, providing we have good weather. TEES will be verticut to help with the grain. All tees were sodded last summer and aggressive aerification will be performed 3 - 4 times this summer. This helps with smoothness, water penetration and overall root development. The goal for the next season is a lower mowing height on tees to get them closer to green texture. FAIRWAYS will again be aerified and top dressed the last week of July. Aerification helps with water movement through the profile as well as smoothing out the rough areas where the turf was replaced last fall due to heavy rainfall in low areas. Also, we will be topdressing fairways on Mondays to help

COURSE

with smoothness and firmness, helping continue with all the rolls. ROUGH will be aerified all summer along with an AerWay aerifyer. This will relieve compaction and promote better turf growth.

BUNKERS will be checked for sand depths to make sure 6” of sand is spread evenly throughout the bunkers. In addition, we will be smoothing edges so balls will end up in the bottom of bunkers.

T H E H O W S A N D W H Y S O F W H AT W E D O

VERTICUTTING HOW: Thin, tightly spaced blades cut vertically into the turf, below the effective cutting height to penetrate and thin the turf canopy.

WHY: Helps reduce thatch build-up (which restricts air, water and fertilizer into the soil) and allows moisture and oxygen into the root system.

TOP DRESSING HOW: Sand is spread using a large spreader after verticutting which allows the sand to permeate the turf.

WHY: Sanded surfaces promote tighter, finer textured turf, alleviate compaction, encourage upright plant growth, & help with thatch control.

CORE AERIFICATION HOW: Using an aerifier, 1/2” plugs of soil are removed leaving holes for air to get beneath the surface of the turf.

WHY: To relieve soil compaction, create firm, smooth putting surfaces by controlling thatch and promoting healthy turf roots. CORAL RIDGE COUNTRY CLUB
