SAFE, EASY & QUICK.
CHEMISTRY IS PART OF KOKKOLA’S IDENTITY The chemical industry and chemical expertise have a long tradition in Kokkola. The creation of a strong industrial area in Kokkola has clear grounds that have held sway and developed over decades: an excellent location, a stable operating environment, outstanding infrastructure, diversified education opportunities and an ample supply of committed and competent labour are factors that provide a great premise for successful business operations. In the 21st century, Kokkola Industrial Park (KIP) and the whole of Kokkola as a chemical cluster have developed at an astounding rate. In the past five years, 413 million euros have been invested in the KIP area, and KIP already has more than 2,200 employees. The City of Kokkola has played a strong role in enabling KIP’s success. Zoning has been flexible, the needs of businesses and industry are served smoothly and decisions are made without delay. The area has 70 hectares of land zoned for industry. “The chemical cluster in Kokkola is much more than KIP. Strong growth in the industrial area has fuelled development on the other side of the fence, and excellence in chemistry at the Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius has given a new boost to the industrial area. The inhabitants of Kokkola have embraced KIP with open arms. Chemistry has become part of the Kokkola identity,” says Jonne Sandberg, Development Director of the City of Kokkola. Anne Pesola, Managing Director of KOSEK (KokkolanJONNE SANDBERG Development Director City of Kokkola
seudun Kehitys Oy – a regional development company), contemplates new approaches for Kokkola and KIP. “New business activities, new ideas and improving their chances for success are at the core of KOSEK’s operation. “KIP is an excellent operating environment with a long tradition as a high-quality hub of the chemical industry. It is a truly wonderful and valuable thing for Kokkola. KIP is also a great location for many different types of enterprises. Bioeconomy, which is recorded in the Finnish Government Programme, is one of the sectors where KIP provides a first-rate operating environment for development. New opportunities in digitalisation open interesting views for the development of KIP,” envisions Pesola. One important operator alongside the City of Kokkola and KOSEK is KIP Service Oy, a leading service company in the large-scale industrial area that ensures that new businesses quickly obtain precisely those services they need. “KIP Service is responsible for the operation of services in the area: properties, infrastructure, commodities, administrative services, security services and plenty of support services that enterprises need from training to transport. In addition to our own services, we have a strong network of partners through which we can arrange the services or contacts businesses require,” promises Managing Director Olli-Matti Airiola. Welcome to Kokkola and KIP!

PORT OF KOKKOLA – FIRST-RATE CONNECTIONS TO THE WORLD One vital partner for companies in the large-scale industrial area in Kokkola is the Port of Kokkola, located in the immediate vicinity. The industrial companies and the Port have grown side by side, supporting each other’s development. The Port of Kokkola is the largest bulk port and third largest general port in Finland. In December 2014, the Port posted a new record, with more than 8 million tons in cargo volume for the first time.
The Port of Kokkola has a long list of first-grade properties: the only covered All Weather Terminal (AWT) in the Nordic countries, a 13-metre access channel to the Deep Port, a rail wagon tippler terminal (RWTT) for train wagons, and the same track gauge directly from the Port all the way to China. Kokkola has regular container traffic directly to the heart of Europe, the Port of Antwerp, and from there to the rest of the world.
KOKKOLA – AT THE TOP OF THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRY For decades, the industrial area by the shore and the education opportunities in the Kokkola region have fuelled each other in a cycle of positive growth and expertise. Today, this is strongly evident in both the KIP businesses and the high-quality hub of education and research in the industry. Along a few hundred metres of a street in Kokkola there are education institutions that offer the entire chain of education in the chemical sector, from basic to doctoral studies. In the 2010s, a total of 413 million euros have been invested in the KIP area, and the combined turnover of all the companies is 1.2 billion euros, with as much as 1.1 billion in exports. All in all, enterprises in the KIP area account for 5.3 per cent of the total exports of the Finnish chemical and metal industry. The region’s global corporations, leaders in their respective fields, have fine-tuned their process expertise to be at the top of the world in Kokkola.
This systematic and persistent work has led to the creation of unique research, development and learning environments. One particularly significant investment is a battery materials laboratory that boasts a dry room, which is necessary for the manufacturing process of lithium-ion batteries. This state-of-the-art operating environment opens new opportunities for research into battery chemicals and the development of lithium-ion battery technologies. The operational heart of Chemplant, a chemical test plant, consists of two pilot-scale reactors. Chemplant provides businesses with a unique setting for demanding R&D activities, and it also functions as a high-level learning environment. The laboratory environment, which serves the test plant, enables tests to be made on a laboratory scale before piloting.

Kokkola has long been in an excellent recruitment position. There have been many competent and motivated applicants for vacant jobs. This is largely due to the education institutions in our region and to the universities providing education in our industry. I hope and believe that the seats of learning in our region will continue to offer high-quality education that specifically supports the industry in this region. JARMO HERRONEN Managing Director Boliden Kokkola Oy

Woikoski has plenty of experience in establishing factory operations in various parts of Finland. In Kokkola, things ended up going much more smoothly than anywhere else, for a truly positive experience. The authorities’ actions and area planning, the infrastructure being ready to go, and the ability to slot into an established complex made things pleasant and easy for us. We are very happy with the way we have been received in Kokkola. The officials even interrupted their summer holidays in order to process our licences, allowing us to focus on our own work. KALEVI KORJALA Managing Director Oy Woikoski Ab
