ATELIER GILMAR - GOLDSMITHS STUDIO FOR UNIQUE JEWELLERY + OBJECTS

Atelier Gilmar was established in 1983 by Award-winning International Goldsmiths Gill and Alan Saunders. Having developed a passion for design and pure craft, they work together to produce modern jewellery to the highest standard, focusing on gold, platinum, palladium and sterling silver. They design and create their innovative jewellery from their studio shop and workshop situated on Church Street in the historic market town of Monmouth. Their Specialist workshop is on view from the studio shop, and is where all of the jewellery on display is produced. This contemporary work-space enables them to create their designs from the conception of ideas to the finished piece, and also allows them to interact with customers. Alongside the comprehensive collection of ready-made jewellery held in stock, they also offer many other associated jewellery services, including hand-making wedding and engagement rings, re-design and re-model of existing jewellery, and their very popular bespoke service.

Rawan Adwan is a fine artist born in Jordan and residing in London since 2012. She has a BA in Fine Arts, her early artworks are inspired by ancient inscriptions and drawings discovered on old basalt volcanic stones in the Jordanian Desert from 1000BC. These early paintings reflect the spirit of primitive art with a contemporary twist. When she moved to England her paintings became more impressionistic in a naive manner. aladwanrawan@gmail.com www.rawanadwan.co.uk

Over the years Yulia has had the opportunity to develop and discover her multi-dimensional style. As an artist, she has come to understand that to create a successful piece she must go beyond the structure, composition, proportions and colour combinations. Through a gradual process of layering, she brings the composition to life, reflecting her innermost imagination. In time, she hopes to grow as an artist and dive deeper into the source of her inspiration, which are the flowers of her own garden.

Focusing on sharp lines, 3D shapes and multi layered optical illusions, Fraser prepares his lineargeometrics digitally, before hand painting ‘one-off’ originals. 10 SCULPTURE

DEBORAH HARRISON

DEBORAH HARRISON Deborah remembers her teachers marvelling that her reasoning was often in reverse. This ability to be reductive rather than constructive is key to her ability to carve stone; she removes the waste to find the 3D image within. After discovering the art of sculpting, Deborah studied Fine Art and Stone Masonry. Deborah works in a wide variety of stones from the softer Soapstones, Limestones, Alabasters through to the harder Marble, amongst other mediums.

Sorrow

Connection

Deborah’s carving is a unique blend of abstract and figurative styles. There are several strands to her stone sculptures: Carving which follows the form, grain and colour of the stone this is called ‘Carving Direct’ and was used by Brancusi, Epstein and Hepworth; carving to release the image she sees within the stone; carvings which follow the form of a premade model maquette and finally, experimental pieces using other mediums or exploring new technology. Her latest series, in Portland stone, called ‘The Testimony of the Dispossessed’, is her response to injustice or human travesty. Each carving is personal story of someone who has come through mental illness, exploitation, addiction, prejudice or oppression. These issues are timeless and repeat through history. Despite the disturbing nature of some of these

Pococurante

issues, Deborah prefers her pieces to simultaneously be aesthetically pleasing and draw an emotional response. She is a founder member of the Cotswold Sculptors Association and ‘Inside Out’, a Gloucester Group of artists who explore spirituality through art. Deborah enjoys working collaboratively with organisations to raise access to the arts in the community and was the inspiration for the Matson Sculpture Festival in Gloucester early in 2018. Deborah runs 3D sculpting courses at her workshop at the City Works and takes sculpting commissions from private, public and corporate clients. www.debsharrison-sculptor.co.uk debsjharrison@gmail.com @debsjharrison

CHRIS LANGLEY

CHRISTOPHER LANGLEY

From the crashing sea on the rocks in Pembrokeshire, to the intricate architectural detail of Cardiff’s pubs, award-winning artist Christopher Langley finds plenty of inspiration in his Welsh surroundings. Raised in Pontypridd, Christopher became a professional artist in 2012. Today, Christopher gives demonstrations to art societies and schools in addition to being invited to comment on art topics on BBC Radio Wales. A committee member of the South Wales Art Society (SWAS), Christopher is artist in residence at the Celtic Manor Resort and David Lloyd Tennis Centre, Cardiff. An expressive and intuitive painter, Christopher works with palette knife, brushes, fingers or whatever else comes to hand to get the desired effect. With his oil paintings, Christopher experiments with mark-making, colour and texture

with palette knife to create effects, sometimes leading unpredictability to allow the paintings to emerge, almost by themselves. Christopher brings a fresh interpretation to his subjects. He says: “There have been many paintings of Cardiff Landmarks and Castle Coch, for example, but none have used the colour combination I bring to the subject.” Christopher finds great inspiration in many things about Wales; the people and the towns; the unique land and seascapes. Whilst on holiday in Tenby in July 2017, he was captivated by the light; high and mid-level clouds presenting hues and tones unlike any he’d seen before. His aim is to capture them on canvas. Christopher’s recent series on Tenby have been very well received. www.christopherlangley.net 07792 295502 art@christopherlangley.net

ART

AMANDA CHRISTINE COX

AMANDA CHRISTINE COX

Amanda Christine Cox has lived in suburbia most of her life and the environmental and social patterns have been ingrained into her interior chaos. Her storyteller skills were honed at an early age by her artistic and creative expression, through the mediums of painting, drawing, puppet and model-making. Her creative interests then shifted toward the written and spoken word, in the form of poetry, singing and acting. Her gift for performing on stage is still utilised today when she uses her creativity and spontaneity to create audience-grabbing scenes in improvised comedy shows in Cheltenham.

She trained in Radio and TV Show creation, but after ten years of sporadic button pushing, she felt the pull towards her creative core and in her mid-thirties, she enrolled in University, and completed a Foundation in Art and Design, then a BA, and finally, an MA in Fine Art. Amanda’s influences are astrophysics, psychology, psychedelia, op art, 80s electronic and acid house music, and children’s television. Amanda has ADHD which causes her style to shift frequently and she can become hyperfocussed on one particular subject before moving onto the next.

Amanda revels in the joy of pure, bright colours and dazzling visual effects. She likes the plasticity of acrylic paints and joyfully uses them in abundance. Amanda has a solo show coming up from the 9th - 16th November at Islington Arts Factory entitled “We Are All Made Of Stars” which is a quote from Moby that sums up her welcoming approach to the diversity of humanity.

Damian’s painting utilizes primary and secondary colours with the arrangement of abstract shapes. He likes to pull apart the components of visual form and reduce them to bare gestures: lines, arcs, circles and polygons become his building blocks. Using decorating brushes or palette knives, Damian applies oil paint to build up layers of colour, creating different planes across the canvas. Linear patterning contrasts with cell-like containers and the seemingly deep layers of coloured shapes produce a visible push-pull tension. www.damianwoodford.com info@damianwoodford.com

Colour is integral to Jane’s paintings. Prior to becoming an artist, she worked in the fashion industry surrounded by beautiful fabrics and textures. This, Jane believes, has been a big influence on her in her practice. She uses a cocktail of bright and vibrant colours with a dash of fluorescent pinks, oranges and yellows. Jane lets the colours and layers mix themselves on the canvas. For Jane, the act of painting is a continuous process always changing, always taking away to create something new.

Judith’s work embodies the notion of alchemy, a seemingly magical process of transformation, creation, or combination, in order to respond visually to her environments and life experiences. Judith’s paintings are concerned with translating the power of her surroundings through a transmutation of material through process. Empowered by the temporal nature of the raw material terrain, the paintings evolve continuously - her use of rusting metal powders allows her paintings to mirror the ebb and flow of the dynamic landscape. 07740305111 jude176@mac.com www.judithbrenner.com

Pedro Sousa Louro has had numerous careers including TV presenting and modelling for almost 17 years but has always lived with cubist images. Now a full-time artist Pedro transfers his soul into a canvas. His work is his way of portraying feelings, emotions and perceptions both consciously and unconsciously. In his more recent researches and studies he finds himself combining both cubism and abstract expressionism into one practice as he creates his work. He uses the technique of ‘dropping’ used by Pollock, but with the order and sense of Rothko. psl-artstudio@hotmail.com www.pedrosousalouro.co.uk

CRAFT & WELLBEING

SACRED TREE SPIRIT

SACRED TREE SPIRIT Jon studied ceramics at Farnham, in Switzerland and in Japan before moving to the Wye Valley and setting up his own pottery. He exhibited with a collective of five wood-fire potters, called the Gnarly Dudes, for several years before his growing family meant that he needed to pursue another vocation, and for the next 20 years, he ran a busy tree surgery business. Now, Jon has turned his sanctuary in the woods into a Wellbeing Centre called Sacred Tree Spirit, that focuses on healing through creativity and releasing trapped emotions and negative beliefs through sound. Jon uses tuning forks to deliver a form of sound therapy that helps his clients to get ‘un-stuck’ and access their latent creativity. Sacred Tree Spirit offers creative workshops where people can learn new skills, connect with nature, and find the stillness within as they create and tune into the trees surrounding them.

The creation of Sacred Tree Spirit occurred as a result of Jon needing to reconnect with himself and soften up after doing such tough, physical work for so long. He has moved on from making wood-fired pottery to turning wood, and although Jon makes some decorative and sculptural pieces, he is most engaged with making functional forms. Things that folks will use every day. He likes to imagine how they will become part of their lifestyle and part of a ritual in their everyday lives. Jon feels there is a real beauty in something that has been made with skilled hands that has a balance of weight and form but has not been fussed over. Those things are a joy to handle, look at, and use every day. Jon’s work evokes a certain lifestyle, with Scandinavian and Japanese influences, but touches that are uniquely his own. He is very much the

embodiment of that way of life. He heats his home only with wood. His hot water comes from the solar panels or the boiler in the self-made range in the kitchen. His pieces are made from local wood he has felled himself, or been gifted, and though practical, there is a poetry in the relationship between the lip, belly, and feet of his bowls. Jon feels that his own sense of wellbeing (eudaimonia) is partly due to his location, and partly due to his creative explorations. Both of which he now enjoys sharing with others through the workshops and sound therapies that he offers. Other craftspeople and artists also offer workshops at Sacred Tree Spirit, and there is also a gallery space where Jon’s pottery and wood turning can be purchased, as well as homemade food and drink. Making while being in nature puts Jon into a meditative headspace, where everything seems effortless. Being creative helps to still the mind and calm the body, and a new term has sprung up to describe it – ‘welldoing’. Using creativity as a form of therapy is not new, but combining the creativity with a beautiful natural space and the learning of new skills is a magical blend. The feelings of calm and peace will hopefully be anchored into that new skill, and those attending the workshops will be able to take home with them not only a physical piece, but also an internal place they can inhabit every time they make. If you would like to attend a workshop or book a Sound Therapy treatment at Sacred Tree Spirit, please check out the website for more information, and if you would like to run a creative or holistic workshop at Sacred Tree Spirit, please contact Jon via email or phone. 01600 890426 www.sacred-tree-spirit.com sacredtreespirit@gmail.com

“My rainbow-drenched paintings sing of wild tumbling hedgerows, tangled meadowlands, open moorlands and magical forests. They whisper of love. My intention is to transport the viewer to an effervescent place of happiness that’s literally saturated in joy. A place where paint smiles.” Originals, limited-edition canvases and giclee prints. 01803 840161 info@yvonnecoomber.com www.yvonnecoomber.com

Kirsten’s pieces acknowledge the rise of the Divine feminine in everyone as we raise in consciousness, bringing balance within ourselves and our planet. These paintings also celebrate strong women and diversity in all cultures. As the divine feminine energy rises it will bring balance and peace within ourselves and in our outer world as our planet, also raises her own vibration and consciousness. 07816 391 643 scribbles@artatvixen.co.uk www.artatvixen.co.uk

Having created much attention at Chester Art Fair last year, a stunning new collection of recently acquired monotype originals, together with artist editions and archive digital print editions, by Berlin artist Walter Lindner (1936-2007), are being showcased on Stand 2.1 at the exhibition. This year notable, successful exhibitions at Works on Paper, Kensington, The Art & An-tiques Fair, Olympia and at David Simon Contemporary, Bath have already compounded interest in the late artist’s work.

Zaza Lewis creates bright and contrasting art using card cutting together with colourful fabrics. Each piece is produced as a limited edition. Every version uses different hand-applied fabrics and details, making it unique. It’s Zaza’s first year selling her work and in September she won the judges prize at the ‘THiNK in NG’ Summer 2018 exhibition in Nottingham.

ART

MARY DEAVILLE

MARY DEAVILLE Mary Deaville is a mixed-media artist based in Ross-on-Wye. She has had a passion for painting and crafting since she was a child living in Hertfordshire. Mary worked in the family pet shop business rather than follow an artistic career, and when she moved to Oxfordshire, she became a financial accountant. Mary has a strong Christian faith and made a simple prayer to God in 2006 that people would see one tenth of God’s created beauty in everything she paints. She believes that since that prayer, God has enhanced her painting skills beyond what she was previously capable of creating. In January 2012, the Ross Baptist Church ‘Art Base’

group approached Mary and asked her to teach the basic techniques of painting and drawing. Mary is now a Professional Artist and has her Artist Studio at the Venue, Hill St, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire HR9 7AD. When asked what her favourite medium is, she replied, “I have loved painting in acrylics for as long as I can remember, then I was asked to teach watercolour. I taught myself something each week to teach the class and also found a love for watercolour.” However, when Mary discovered Pebeo Mixed Media, at the SAA All About Art show in London, she was mesmorised and excited. main types, Vitrail, Fanstay Prisme and Fantasy Moon and the paints chemicalIy interact with one other during the 24hr drying time, creating amazing effects. Mary became a SAA Professional Associate and pestered the Society of All Artists to let her try it out. They sent her on a Pebeo Mixed-Media training course, and she is now one of 20 artists trained to teach it. Hannah Ferguson of The Secret Gallery in The Shambles, Newent, started the Newent Art Competition in 2016 and Mary painted a tryptich in Pebeo mixed-media called “Something Fishy”. Mary entered the Pebeo Mixed-Media Prize Competition in 2017, and had “Something Fishy”, exhibited in The Strand Gallery in London. “The Violin and the Artist” was entered into this years’ Newent Art Competition with the theme of Music and became the overall winner. Her latest piece, “Dragonfly Pond”, will be in the Special exhibition at The Secret Gallery with other Pebeo works from October to December 2018.

GLASS

CONTEMPORARY GLASS SOCIETY

CONTEMPORARY GLASS SOCIETY The unique qualities of glass can transform an environment and it can also have an extraordinary impact on people. However, artists need access to a community that can support, encourage and inspire them, that can provide quality information, opportunities and business support. They need to be given a collective, international voice and the environment to dare, push boundaries, and develop and master techniques. Originally established in 1997 to represent the interests of glassmakers within the national and international community, the Contemporary Glass Society, CGS, now has over 900 members and is continuing to grow significantly. CGS is an international, charitable organisation and they are very passionate about glass and the artists working with this amazing medium. Their vision is that all glass artists reach their artistic potential and that the public and collectors

have the opportunity to give them the recognition and acclaim they deserve. Their aims are to encourage experimentation, debate, refinement of skills and excellence at all levels. They achieve this by: • Representing glass at an international level and giving glass a voice in the media and via the committee’s networks. • Creating space for critical debates around contemporary glass. • Providing encouragement and support to artists, promoting a glass art community and supporting a network of Regional Hubs. • Publishing a full colour magazine, Glass Network and regular e-newsletters. • Providing context and opportunity for top, established artists to mingle with new and aspiring artists, and for collectors and the public to access glass artists.

• Forging links between all those involved with glass in an artistic, technological, manufacturing or support capacity. • Providing business support, including discounts and supplier information. • Supporting emerging talent with subsidised membership fees for students and through the New Designers Contemporary Glass Society Associate Prize. The Contemporary Glass Society is a charity, registered in the UK. The organisation is funded entirely through the members and from donations made by individuals and organisations. Find out more about how to support CGS and the wider glass community both today and in the future by visiting the website. www.cgs.org.uk 01379 741120

Roberta uses traditional hot glass techniques, in nontraditional ways, to create unique, sculptural work that is strongly influenced by water. She is passionate about our oceans, and her work often explores perspectives around our relationship with the environment.

Jeff utilises both hot and cold-working techniques, to produce three-dimensional pieces that are made up in layers of glass. He fuses transparent colour pigment from original imagery, then creates subtle painted layers within the piece before the final casting, grinding and polishing stages.

JEFF CUNNINGHAM

Beryl is especially drawn to the angular lines of the structures and subdued colour tones of the surrounding area. She uses strip cut glass and crucible melting techniques, which reflect the angularity of the jetty structures, whilst the crucible melting process echoes the fluidity of the water.

Bristol Blue Glass Ltd was started back in 1988 by James Adlington, with the help of glass maker Peter St Clair. The aim was to re-establish a glass making tradition back into Bristol that had been lost for over 60 years. Through many a struggle, James managed to learn and pass on many of the old skills required to blow glass by hand, in the time-honoured fashion. We are really proud of what we have achieved over the passing years, this year being our 30th Anniversary! 0117 9720 818 www.bristol-glass.co.uk bristolblueglass@bristol-glass.co.uk

BRISTOL BLUE GLASS

As an artist based in Herefordshire, Beryl’s inspiration and main focus has been on the structures she has encountered whilst walking along the Severn Estuary, and their interaction with the fluidity of the water.

Tabitha’s fused glass process has been focused around the use of a vitrigraph kiln to make murrine which are the bases for her vessels. She is inspired by the landscape around her as well and the female form and the cycles it endures. Through multiple fusings she creates texture and light. By manipulating particular areas during the heating process her work evolves from a static object in to dynamic and flowing vessel.

Barbara has moved on from selling her wares at Festivals and Fayres to creating in a new medium – blown glass. Now given freedom and inspiration to just make, she is relishing the creativity. She concentrates on an aesthetic that moves her, rather than following fabricated trends that brainwash buyers into constantly obtaining more disposable possessions. Her recent work, “In The Balance” is an assemblage of glass and found objects, suggesting a playful rejection of trend and the hypocrisy of shabby chic. 07828151047 barbararoll@yahoo.co.uk Instagram: barbara_roll_glass

Michele has been working in glass for several years; having previously developed her design and making skill with textiles. She has combined these techniques with glass and has created a diverse collection covering many glass fusing techniques. She recently utilised Gemmaux techniques developed by Crotti in 1870s. Michele draws inspiration from nature and the built environment, some of her latest pieces were inspired by the volcanoes in Lanzarote. 07733 360638 michele@uniqueglassart.co.uk www.uniqueglassart.co.uk

Twenty years ago when Judith started making Glass Art, the industry was changing. Her early experimentations with new glass textures, techniques; and the multitude of colours and forms of glass being produced at that time; helped her to develop a unique range of hand-made, Sculptural Glass Art, Panels and Bowls. Because of the nature of the glass and kiln firings, each piece of glass is different from the last.

Christopher’s body of work represents the torture and dehumanizing pain which has been inflicted both mentally and physically on West Africans who have found themselves forced into slavery. The work incorporates a combination of materials and processes, which Christopher has manipulated to form organic and life-like objects. He uses traditional methods of blowing in glass and throwing in clay, then uses his own hand in the making to express his emotions and feelings about the subject matter.

Ana is an Argentine interior designer who loves to materialize in glass the pieces that she designs. Her favorite kiln glass technique is pâte de verre, since it permits her to experiment a lot. Ana is always trying to create her pieces in a different way to the traditional. Her works are mostly designed using curving lines, round forms and spheres that connect us with nature, give the sensation of being contained, and offer safety, suggest love and harmony. +54 9 336 4545980 analauraquintana@icloud.com www.analauraquintana.com

In their Studio hidden away in a secret area of the Dorset coast, Ian Godfrey and Gail Boothman produce unique, high-quality glass art using a range of kiln forming techniques to generate incredible effects in their work. Every design is carefully thought-out in the way light can influence the design and intensify its impact. Inspiration comes from the coast, the vibrant countryside or simply the magnificent qualities of glass itself. They create bespoke works of art for private commissions, kitchen splashbacks and tableware.
