4 COVER CREATIVE MELANIE CORMACK-HICKS
MELANIE CORMACK-HICKS Mel was working as an art teacher in the Cotswolds when she rediscovered her artist’s voice while painting on the beach in Beer on a family holiday. Surrounded by ink-splattered pebbles, she dared to dream that one day she would be able to create evocative artwork that mirrored the raw energy she felt while in the landscape. “Being present is the most important part of my process. It allows me to feel the landscape and translate that feeling into paint, whether I be in my local woodland, on a Devon beach, beside a pond or river, or on a windswept hillside. All my paintings are inspired by working in the landscape – sketches are made on location, plein air paintings are produced, and many hours are spent just observing, not only what I see, but also how I feel.” Mel’s last step to embracing her career as an artist was to leave 20 years of teaching behind. She can barely believe this was just two years ago, beginning with a solo exhibition at Chapel Arts in Cheltenham, followed by exhibits at Saatchi’s The Other Art Fair and Bath Art Fair, and being awarded Artist in Residence at WWT Slimbridge last year. In March 2019, she realised her dream of being represented

She believes it is this process that allows each painting to find its own strength and voice.
Paddle in the Cool Light
“The thrill for me is that people really connected to my artwork. Every painting has its own narrative, but it doesn’t aim to tell you a story. My mindset is that once a painting is complete it’s no longer mine – that I need to step back in order for the viewer to find their own narrative. My paintings often evoke deep-set memories and feelings in their owners.”

I start every painting with a good dose of visual chaos that leaves me scratching my head and wondering what I’ve done.” Mel believes this, in turn, gives her the greatest opportunities to explore and harness her creativity, because once that chaos is guided the energy of those initial marks remain.

BLACK CAT GLASS DESIGNS Black Cat Glass Designs is Becci Meakins and Rich Hamblin. They create fused, slumped and stained glass pieces in their garden studio in the Forest of Dean. Rich and Becci began their venture with glass in 2012. Neither had attended art college but were interested in the arts and therefore decided to look at available courses which would interest them. Rich went on a stained glass course at the Creative Glass Guild in
Over the years, they have attended many other courses to include: pattern bars, drop vases, on-edge strip construction, textures and weaving, casting to name but a few. As America is a huge melting pot for glass artists, they have also participated in courses from American glass studios and learnt many techniques from American tutors. They are inspired by the vibrancy of colour in glass. By using a mix of transparent and opal glasses, they produce pieces which show the depth and expression of colour. Glass fusion, through heatwork, produces a variety of effects. By working with heat they can create or lose texture, brighten or fade colour and use gravity to ‘stretch’ pieces into vases or deep vessels. Glass is such a versatile material. SALLY ANNE MORGAN
PRINTMAKING 11
SALLY ANNE MORGAN Sally is a painter print-maker based in Worcester. She makes reduction prints using hessian backed lino and her work has often been compared to the travel poster art of the 20th century. Creating prints enables her to interpret the world in lines, shapes and blocks of colour. Sally usually begins with a sketch from her sketch books. She then draws a thumbnail image before making a full size drawing. She then plays with colours until she has the final draft before transferring this image to the lino and cutting away each layer; inking the block; and then pressing it into paper. The nature of the process means that a limited edition of hand-made prints is created; each one being slightly unique. Sally loves the physicality of cutting, inking up and pressing as well as the excitement of the reveal of the final result! Sally also works with soft, dry pastels, working on mountboard, or pastel-mat. With this medium she creates colourful energetic pieces. Sally is a 2019 finalist in the Artists and Illustrators Magazine’s Artist of the Year Competition and her work was exhibited at the Mall Galleries in London. She has also exhibited as part of the RBSA Open Exhibition in the Spring of 2019; had a solo exhibition at Number 8 in Pershore, exhibited at Obsidian Art in Buckinghamshire, and Bevere Gallery, Worcester. The Bevere Gallery is also where Sally runs printing with lino workshops throughout the autumn and spring each year. Details can be found on her website. Sally is a founder member and co-ordinator of Worcestershire Open Studios, which had its inaugural year in 2015; and she opens her studio each August Bank Holiday, as part of this event. www.sallyannemorgan.co.uk sally@sallyannemorgan.co.uk 07796181276

painting specialising in wine, which was also something he was starting to take a great interest in. He has developed a unique blend of working with both contemporary and traditional styles, colours and techniques, and this gives his paintings an individuality, detail and atmosphere. In 2004 Peter was invited to take part in a prestigious Still Life exhibition in California, where he was the bestselling artist in the show. He has continued to paint fine wines and still life and has achieved much acclaim and recognition for his work.
The Autumn Exhibition in Monmouth will see a new collection of work by our resident artists; Kip Kavallares, Mark Beresford, Warren Day, Doug Eaton, Paul Burgess, Pat Handley, Walter Keeler, David Hoskin, Nik Burns and many more. The show will also explore a range of different disciplines that include Fine Art, Ceramics, Sculpture, Glass, and Jewellery by master Jeweller Paul Hatton. Our Autumn featured artist is Peter Kotka. Peter initially trained as a toolmaker and only really started painting full time during the 1980s. He took time to read about painters and their techniques and was inspired by the landscape paintings of John Constable. In fact, this was time well invested as many years later he copied Constables ‘Haywain’ for an American client, half full size. After some surprising success with a Gallery, and early commissioning of works which sold quickly, successful exhibitions followed and his professional career had started. Peter explored different techniques and followed the detailed style such as that of Dutch Landscape painters of the

16th Century, Jacob van Ruysdael in particular. Royal Doulton also requested him to paint a series of designs for collector plates entitled ’Harvest Home’ and numerous card designs followed for Hallmark and Polytint. He also started undertaking an adult education teaching post with a local college, and the classes proved so popular that he stills runs local classes to this day. Occasionally, if requested, bespoke ‘painting holidays’ are organised for small groups of artists. Peter decided to find a new challenge and direction and focused on perfecting ‘Still Life’
We also welcome back Pierre Williams. Pierre’s work moves all who see it. Crafted from an undeniably strong sense of personal experience and life narrative, each piece begs questions about the human condition, hope, change and longing. Pierre poetically transforms his art into stories that land with anyone who has contemplated their life and position within the world. The decoration sits ajar from the works’ titles, prompting further exploration of the meaning. The lustres suggest the preciousness in us all, even pugilists, a reference common throughout his work, striking a chord with anyone who has had to fight or struggle for change in their existence. And through all of this meaning, there is a an encapsulating, joyous curiosity of beauty in each and every piece.

ROBERTA MASON
ROBERTA MASON It’s all about the sea. Roberta’s work is inspired by the formation of waves, the language of bubbles and the amazing world of strange and wonderful marine creatures. Her aim is to share her love of and fascination with the seas and oceans of the world through her work. In the words of Rachel Carson, “The more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities of the universe about us, the less taste we shall have for destruction.” She hopes that this is the case. The creation of her work involves using traditional glass techniques, in non-traditional ways, to create unique, sculptural work and installations. Roberta feels that transparency and movement of hot glass captures a snapshot of life in a way no other material can. Her journey into art has come via science and technology and she has recently graduated with an MA in Ceramics and
Glass from the Royal College of Art in London. She is a finalist in the Visual Art Open UK & International Emerging Artist Awards 2019 and has two sculptures, Shorebreak and The Most Charming Creatures, which will be shown in the VAO Finalists Exhibition as part of the Chester Arts Fair, 15-17th Nov 2019, Chester Racecourse, Chester. From the 18th Nov to the 1st of Dec 2019 Roberta will be taking part in the Creative Coverage Group Exhibition, The Oxmarket, Chichester, St Andrews Court, East St, Chichester PO19 1YH, where a selection of her new work, Porifera, will be shown. A selection of Roberta’s work is currently part of the Summer Exhibition at Gallery Plus, Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk.

Primarily a landscape and seascape artist, she is largely self taught and paints in a variety of mediums including oils, acrylics, watercolour, pastels and inks. Her painting style is usually impressionistic but with a strong representational bias, as she likes the viewer to be able to recognise the landscape while she shares the feeling and character of the place from her own perspective. Her artistic drive culminates in a desire to capture the different seasons, atmospheres, beauty and light of various landscapes. She’s never short of inspiration wherever she goes and her painting process usually begins with a walk in the countryside
Teaching painting techniques is something Dawn finds very rewarding and she’s a regular guest artist at Pure Artwork Studios. Her workshops are relaxed, informative and friendly and she loves helping people build the confidence to find their own artistic voice.

SCULPTURE
GLENN MORRIS
GLENN MORRIS For Glenn, life and work is an intense relationship with materials - the use of one’s hands and the act of making becomes an extension of the thought process and a visual realisation of ideas. Sculpture, therefore, is not a pastime or even the ‘working day’ but an all consuming and compulsive way of life.
one such attempt to, hopefully, engage the viewer with the fragility of nature and, perhaps, also ourselves. The piece is a third working of a sort of memorial to Rachel Carson. (It would be fair to say that Glenn sees much of his work in this light - a sort of homage to irretrievable loss, particularly beauty.)
With the passing of years he has found himself drawn increasingly towards the human relationship with time and the so called ‘Natural World’. These themes occur repeatedly and with each work, or series of works, Glenn attempts to draw on themes such as surface, memory, space and often figurative forms to focus on the ephemeral nature of beauty, the inexorable damage to the environment and the human place within these themes.
Glenn has spent long periods of time over the last 25 years living and travelling with the Inuit in the Arctic both in Greenland and Arctic Canada. Often, during these times he has felt an intense and profound link to the land; the feeling is almost primeval in terms of its intensity and with it comes a sense of just how insignificant one is. Glenn believes this ‘state of mind’, as it were, only becomes apparent and tangible after a person has spent at least two months in a true wilderness environment and is not something that he has felt in day-to-day life. The times Glenn has shared with
‘Silent Spring’, the sculpture he entered for the recent exhibition at the ‘Secret Gallery’ in Newent is an example of

the Inuit, living, as they do on the very edge of where it is possible for humans to inhabit, have given him a profound sense of how society, our ‘western society’, has lost connection with nature; these experiences, he believes also inform his work. Glenn is a strong believer in the ‘craft’ of sculpture and chooses to work in very traditional ways with stone being his preferred medium; this can be a long process and a marble carving may take up to four hundred hours to complete. However, although the life of a sculptor is, to say the least, rather tenuous in financial terms, Glenn has been lucky enough to be able to work full time recently doing something he loves doing. For a number of years Glenn has also taught stone carving as part of ‘Arts in the Marches’ to the Llangarron Stone Carvers group. The group meets regularly and has produced some wonderful work. New members are always welcome. www.glennmorris.co.uk @glennmorrissculpture

DAVID VARNEY David takes inspiration from his work as an environment and conservation volunteer, working in and around Epping Forest in Essex. “The sights, sounds, colours and textures from the countryside around us are truly inspirational and hopefully the depth, colours and textures created in my work evoke similar emotions.
David uses contemporary materials with both abstract and figurative techniques, crafting reflective and tactile pieces, which in turn create interest and intrigue and evoke emotional connections.

By using paint, pigments, inks and metallics with resin, a reflective and tactile piece of art is slowly built up over time into layers, which are then manipulated with tools, airflow and heat, in order to create a free-flowing, contemporary piece of original 3D resin art. Due to the techniques used, every piece of art is truly original and although inspiration can be drawn from other works, no two pieces will ever be

Alongside her illustration work and paintings she loves to create work from found objects and/or natural elements, especially driftwood. Landscape and history are her constant inspiration and from her Argyll studio she has this in abundance. Morag’s new jewellery collection is made from pieces of driftwood carefully chosen. The wood is cleaned and dried then cut, sanded, painted and burnt. Each piece is individual bearing the scars from journeys made around the coastlines of Argyll and beyond. Morag loves the fact that each piece has its own secret history so she never knows where the driftwood has actually travelled from. The inspiration for this collection comes from the standing stones, the cup and ring marks and the stone carvings from ancient history. Morag will be attending Scotland’s Trade Fair at the SEC in Glasgow on the 22nd to the 23rd September. Her stand number is LG14. If you are trade and unable to make the show and would like to stock her designs or if you would like to buy individual pieces directly from Morag, please contact her via her website, instagram or email where she can direct you to her various selling platforms or stockists. www.morag-lloyds.co.uk morag@moraglloyds.com IG: moraglloyds_art

MARK LUMLEY
BLACKSMITH
27
MARK LUMLEY Mark has worked as a sculptor & blacksmith for the past 30 years, transforming basic metal bars into fluid human forms, creating outward simplicity by letting the forged steel and bronze find their own shape. Mark mainly sells through private clients and he has exhibited in a wide variety of art fairs and galleries. For over 20 years he has been making a range of hand-forged furniture for Soane Britain, winning the Walpole Award. His work has been sold and written about all over the world. Mark’s work and the high demands for Soane Britain have taken most of Mark’s time, however, his passion is sculpture and this year he has exhibited his latest body of work at Fresh: Art Fair (Cheltenham) with Creates Gallery and participated in exhibitions from London to Wales. Exhibiting an expansive body of previously unseen works, this show reveals the rigour, dedication and experimentation of a secretive and devotional practitioner. Focusing on the human form and in particular the head, Mark’s work uses his expertise
as a blacksmith to push the limitations of solid metal bar, using metal like clay, affording a fluidity and organic form which reveals the alchemy of his practice. Other pieces compile off-cuts of metal which are shaped, welded and ground using similar processes to those employed for furniture making. When asked why his pieces are so sought after, Mark says he feels that his work has a soul. That every piece of metal he works with becomes exactly what it wants to be because he listens to it. He doesn’t force it into a shape that it doesn’t want to be. He doesn’t think he could replicate any pieces exactly, because every bit of metal he works with has a slightly different destiny. He loves to create complex pieces, but never sketches out the idea first. He just dives straight in and gets started. His advice to any artist who wants to be successful is just that - get started. It doesn’t matter where you start. Start anywhere! You can find out more about Mark and his work on his website – www.marklumley.co.uk and if you would like to purchase any of his pieces, you can call 01594 842226.

ARTIST BLACKSMITH
MISSFIRE
MISSFIRE
Clare McHugh works under the creative name of MissFire, producing her own unique brand of artistic metalwork since 2008. While studying Metalwork and Jewellery at The Surrey Institute of Art and Design, she chose to specialise in blacksmithing, finding herself fascinated with the history and significance of the craft. “Early on I chose metal as a material with which to express my creativity. I was attracted to its versatility, strength and durability. The ability to control and manipulate steel using hot-forged blacksmithing techniques opened up the possibilities of what I could do with it, and the past 18 years have been spent allowing my skills to catch up with my design ideas.” MissFire is perhaps best known for her vibrant and exciting “Flower Series” sculptures, a collection of over 15 different floral subjects immortalised in steel and painted with intense colour combinations. This year’s new pieces include Aquilegia and Dodecatheon. Work is created at her studio in Drybrook, in the Forest of Dean. She individually creates pieces on a variety of scales, from tiny acorns with copper leaves, to towering Foxgloves and arching Bluebells.
This year is a very exciting one for MissFire, as she has been largely occupied by a large-scale public sculpture commission for The Open University for their 50th Anniversary celebrations. The 22ft high and 20ft wide wall-mounted Oak Tree Sculpture, is designed to hold approximately 7000 shields. It will be installed in the Library on campus in Milton Keynes. The ‘Tree of Learning’ is an opportunity for the alumni to donate towards a scholarships for carers fund, and in return receive a personalised shield to be hung from the branches of the tree. The fundraising initiative, led by Cheltenham-based marketing company Cello Signal, has been such a huge success that the Tree has had to ‘grow’ along the way to accommodate demand. It will now cover the entirety of the wall space in the atrium of the Betty Boothroyd Library, and be an impressive spectacle for many years to come. www.missfire.co.uk missfireart@outlook.com 07748473782 Studio 8, The Yard, The Cross, Drybrook, Glos, GL17 9BU

PHIL POWELL
PHIL POWELL After a ten-year dream of becoming a Fine Arts Photographer, Phil was accepted into the art world with a warm welcome after launching his first ever public exhibition at h.Art in 2018. With 2019 seeing big changes, Phil has been overwhelmed with interest from an extensive list of Fine Art Galleries wishing to display his work over the next two years and will be exhibiting at h.Art again this September. You can find him at Venue #70, St Catherine’s Church, Hoarwithy. While his love for nature and decaying structures send him all over the country, his most recent
ventures have led him to Wales. Phil can also often be found within the heart of the Forest of Dean and its surrounding areas. Whilst he has been known for his Urbex inspired style and Industrial Photography, his outlook on farm machinery has caught the eye of eager agricultural lovers and as a result he has taken on several commissions. Phil continues to amaze art lovers with his unique and intriguing vision and has been embracing a recent change in his style which has enabled him to create The Darkside Exhibition which was launched this summer with great success.
