2 COVER CREATIVE RICHARD PRENTICE
RICHARD PRENTICE When Blackbird Ceramics opened in July 2016, in the harbour village of Saundersfoot in Pembrokeshire, it marked the beginning of the life Richard Prentice had been dreaming about since he was a young child. His interest in ceramics was ignited at an early age, with school trips to museums and galleries in the 1970s. He became fascinated by the versatile and beautiful nature of clay, and the legacies left behind from generations and cultures working with this natural raw material. This early fascination is evidenced in Richard’s work today where he is inspired by classical forms, yet makes them contemporary and relevant to today. His pieces are also evocative of the beautiful surroundings where he lives. Having moved to Pembrokeshire nearly ten years ago, his studio is located on one of the world’s most stunning coastlines. Richard is always mesmerised by his surroundings, he says “There is a great deal of inspiration here, the landscape is constantly changing - from heavy grey Atlantic storms, to the sea being like a mill pond of aquamarine and blue hues, only interrupted by the cathedral’esque quality of the rock formations that take your breath away.” Translating the elements from the Pembrokeshire coast into design, form and style are his priorities. ”Evoking a feeling or essence of what exists here is as important in my work as
RICHARD PRENTICE COVER CREATIVE 3
leaving space and ambiguity to allow my audience and clients to explore their own thoughts, draw their own conclusions, their own feelings, and relate it to their own story,” says Richard, who strongly believes emotion is critical in art. ”Working with ceramics in such an incredible environment supports my ability to create pieces of ceramic art and studio pottery that have a real sense of place, and are rooted in their environment.” Richard works primarily with three types of clay: Earthenware, black grogged clay, and Fine Bone China with its clay sourced from Cornwall. The techniques he uses are broad, from slab pots, slip casting, hand coiling and throwing pieces on his vintage foot pedal potter’s wheel. ”I don’t like to restrict myself to a specific way of creating my work, I design my pieces and spend a lot of time considering the best way to make each piece.” Richard’s ‘Sea Globes’ and ‘Sea Urns’ are exquisite forms that act as canvases for his contemporary complex glazing techniques and multiple firings. Each piece is finished with platinum, gold or copper detailing and every Sea Globe or Urn is unique, with the artist working and over-working glazes to create stunning and dramatic effects. ”I don’t hold back when I am working on these pieces, I take risks, I’m constantly pushing myself, and whilst some pieces don’t survive the process, those that do are truly memorable.” Richard is also keen to create pieces that reflect the industrial past of Pembrokeshire and developed Colliery Pots that are inspired by the collieries near to where he lives and the old trams that used to carry coal in front of Blackbird Ceramics Gallery to the Saundersfoot Harbour. These pieces are both iconic and beautiful in their form with a close connection to the historical, cultural and industrial past of where they were made, which is reflected in their design. They are slab pots, made from black grogged clay with hand thrown chimneys to reflect the derelict collieries around Pembrokeshire. They are finished with gold and copper lustres, which not only represents the richness of minerals found underground in Pembrokeshire, but also the royal connection, as Queen Victoria reportedly insisted Saundersfoot coal was supplied to every royal residence. In March 2017, Colliery Pots were exhibited at The Woolf Gallery, London as part of Welsh Art Week and Wales Week London. Richard’s work has sold to collectors from around the UK, and further afield including Canada, U.S.A., Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Europe. His gallery, situated in the bustling harbour village of Saundersfoot, is a great place to meet the artist and see his work. To find out more about Richard Prentice and his studio pottery, please visit www.blackbirdceramics.co.uk or you can find him on Twitter @theartfulpotter, Instagram @blackbirdceramics or at his gallery at 12a The Strand, Saundersfoot, Pembrokeshire SA67 8JW
4 ART HOWARD JONES
HOWARD JONES
Howard’s style is impressionistic with a strong leaning towards the abstract. He studies out of doors as much as possible in order to find inspiration for his studio work. His subject matter is varied, his landscapes aiming to depict the moody and uncompromising Welsh weather, whilst the buildings and cityscapes tend to offer sharp dynamic contrasts in tone and geometric shape. Line tends to dominate the initial process which then allows for the larger shapes to integrate, a sort of stitching together technique. Two styles seem to be apparent between his watercolour work and his mixed media & oil. The latter two showing off his tendencies towards abstract. The one area of cross-over between the two styles being the underlying line work. As a child in the sixties, he was extremely fortunate to have visited many parts of Europe due to the adventures of his somewhat nomadic parents. Howard believes that this had some affect on his artistic development, mostly positive, but more importantly, it possibly nurtured an appreciation for the transient aspects in life. This could account for the loose style.
His studio is in a converted chapel situated in Taffs Well just outside Cardiff. Although his studio is not open to the public, he will welcome potential clients by prior appointment. It is here that Howard feels at his happiest, enjoying the opportunities to paint between his tutoring duties. Howard is a much sought-after tutor offering guidance at intermediate and advanced level. 2017 saw an unprecedented interest in Howard’s work from a number of eminent galleries. Three solo exhibitions at: Off the Wall Llandaff, The Waterfront Gallery Milford Haven and y Galeri Caerphilly. Regularly showing at: Creates Gallery Monmouth, The Albany Gallery Cardiff, Off the Wall Llandaff, Waterfront Milford Haven, Y Galeri Caerphilly. Having clients both in the UK and more recently the USA Howard is now looking to expand his audience, welcoming enquiries from both professional and private clients. website: howardjonesart.co.uk email: howardjonesartuk@gmail.com

6 EXHIBITION ART IN PENALLT
ART IN PENALLT 31 August - 2 September 2018 Art in Penallt was formed nine years ago when a small group of local artists and residents in the village of Penallt came together to organise an exhibition of high quality, contemporary art. The event is now recognised by artists, makers and visitors from far afield and this, our 8th year, promises to be even better than before as we continue to attract top artists and makers like the potter Walter Keeler (our Patron) and the portrait artist Richard Wills, not only to show but to demonstrate as well. Over 130 leading local and international artists and makers have showcased their work and sales are consistently high. Curator Ann Bradley and her team carry out the process of sifting applications from interested exhibitors and from January onwards are hard at work developing each year’s fine art show. Selecting exhibitors from many applicants is never an easy task and to ensure that the show brings
in exciting new blood the team normally does not select exhibitors for more than two consecutive years. This sometimes makes for tough choices. The event is centred on Capel Pentwyn, an imaginatively converted Arts and Crafts period church, a small but light building with excellent wall space. The church is transformed each year from a luxury holiday home into an art gallery. Alongside Capel Pentwyn, in the middle of the village, is Babington Meadow, a novel ecological village recreation area. This becomes a further display area and also demonstrations by artists and makers, all set under large marquees. The two adjacent sites complement each other, the chapel being a calm, quiet space full of interesting, original artwork whilst the Meadow is an animated centre of creative activity. The show will open in Capel Pentwyn on the evening of Thursday August
30th with a free drinks reception where the public can meet the artists. There will also be an art course in Pelham Hall over the weekend. The main exhibition in Capel Pentwyn runs from Friday 31st August to Sunday 2nd September and is open from 10 to 4. Demonstrations and further exhibits will be on show in Babington Meadow on both the Saturday and the Sunday when delicious, locally prepared snacks and drinks will be served on the chapel terrace. Of course, the highly regarded Inn at Penallt is just around the corner for those making a day of it and the Michelin starred The Whitebrook is a 5 minute drive down the Whitebrook valley. The Boat Inn, a famous real ale pub on the banks of the Wye also provides excellent bar meals. The Inn at Penallt has a rolling display of artists’ work from the exhibition throughout the year.
Their work includes wall art, dishes, bowls, vases, mirrors and fused glass jewellery.
Deborah is a professional contemporary sculptor who specialises in stone. She carves the stone until she reaches a kind of ‘skin’ after which it has a life of its own. Her work has been exhibited across the UK including Gloucester Cathedral, Norfolk Cathedral and St Stephens Walbrook, London. She is a founder member of the ‘Cotswold Sculptors Association’. She welcomes sculpture commissions from private, pubic and corporate clients and runs 3D sculpting courses at her workshop at Gloucester City Works.
Highly featured, her work has appeared in two solo shows in public buildings, group exhibitions in museums and private galleries, including Rome and New York and her paintings are in numerous private collections including Australia, Japan, the USA and Europe.
Etched and oxidised sterling silver funky jewellery for men and women. Ali has a workshop based in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, where she creates ‘one of a kind’ pieces of contemporary adornments, inspired by architecture, the sea and nature. She started her creative life as a mature student at Hereford Art College, and is largely self taught as a jeweller. Ali shows her work at contemporary craft fairs, in a select few galleries, is part of the Worcester Guild Contemporary Craft, and has an open wokshop during h.Art Week.
MONIQUE OLIVER
All of Monique’s paintings are created by pouring the paint directly onto a canvas from cups and despite the unpredictability at play using this technique, Monique works in a very deliberate style, combining control with spontaneous reactions.
ALI TREGASKES
They have trained at various venues across the country, and as a result, their work combines a vast array of techniques creating a broad range of work where there is something for everyone.
DEBORAH HARRISON

PAT H A N D L E Y
PETER DIXON
Peter Dixon has been turning wood as a creative pastime since the mid-90s, much of the time whilst living and working in Africa and South Asia, and being both inspired by the work of local artists and makers and working with a range of exotic woods.
Painted in acrylic these are based on images she has taken locally or on her travels elsewhere. Clouds change by the minute but Pat captures that stunning moment above a landscape or seascape.
Now UK based, Peter enjoys turning wood with unusual character and colour, sometimes adding carved and pierced features, using stains, pyrography and occasionally metallic ‘coldcast’ to accentuate cracks and voids.
Sometimes, he makes simple, useful things like mugs or jugs, on other occasions his work is less straightforward, making demands, and even challenging the user to negotiate with an unexpected pot to do an ordinary job. He hopes his pottery brings with its seriousness, some humour and sensual pleasure.
SHARON CURTIS
WA L T E R K E E L E R
Walter Keeler’s work grows from his passion for pots from the past and the joy of making and firing, it also inevitably reflects the world and times in which he lives.
After painting a variety of subjects in various mediums for over 30 years, Pat is now concentrating on a series of sky paintings. These are up to a meter square and seek to capture some of the incredible displays that nature provides daily.
Sharon Curtis is delighted to have been selected to join ‘Art in Penallt’ this year as one of 29 artists exhibiting at Capel Pentwyn. Sharon is a local artist with a studio in Ross-on-Wye and she produces vibrant contemporary limited edition reduction lino prints and hand-cut paper art. Sharon is part of the Worcester Guild of Contemporary Craft and has an open studio during h.Art week.
Victoria bases all her work on nature, the local flora and fauna that can be found if you look closely and take your time. From finding and photographing the subject matter; to the hours of focusing through a magnifying lamp, sewing the tiny stitches that slowly create the image, patience and stillness are an absolute necessity. The methodical stab and pull of the needle, studying the smallest detail on a spider’s back or the colour graduation of a butterfly’s wing, helps Victoria to find an understanding and peace with nature. There is beauty to be found in unexpected places if you take a closer look, focus and have patience.
RICHARD WILLS V I C T O R I A M AT T H E W S O N
Sarah Wygas has a passion for producing aesthetically pleasing functional pieces. Recently, Sarah’s focus has been to develop glazes which enhance the forms she makes. Sarah is also developing pieces which are more experimental in scale. Sarah has been selected to show work this year at the New Designers in Islington, London, also at Art in Penallt. She also has a wide range of items at The Court Cupboard Craft Gallery near Abergavenny.
The inspiration for Richard Wills’ work derives from his environment and the people of the environment. Richard’s work is based on observation, whether interpreted realistically or in the abstract. His understanding of the potential of different medias is essential in allowing him the freedom to convey atmosphere and sensation into his work. Draughtsmanship and the understanding of the mediums is essential to his work. Richard’s approach to painting has a classical background. Having been associated with Art in Penallt since its conception, Richard is very pleased to become a Patron.
SARAH WYGAS
Tracey-Anne has had a passion for wildlife and has painted natural history subjects for as long as she can remember, having settled on watercolour as her ‘medium’ at about the age of 13. She gets immense pleasure from combining these two interests and also hopes that her work will inspire interest in, and support for, wildlife in general, and in our wonderful native flora and fauna in particular. Originally from London, and now settled in the beautiful Usk Valley, Tracey-Anne exhibits her paintings locally and in national wildlife exhibitions, and paints in a variety of styles, from the simple portraits she calls her ‘specimen boxes’ to more experimental ‘frame-breaking’ paintings, but always depicting her beloved natural history.

CLAIRE LOVELL ART 11
CLAIRE LOVELL
Claire’s huge excitement as a painter is derived from her vivid sense of colour in every sphere of life. Her inspiration comes from the sights and sounds of her morning walks amongst the glorious hills in Monmouthshire, her travels to the coasts of Devon, Cornwall and Scotland, and the summer heat of southern France. She loves how her surroundings, whether inland or by the sea, are ever shifting, and ever changing in mood and tone, texture and light, ‘literally from one minute to the next.’ At times she is almost overawed by how much colour and energy is out there, and thus occasionally feels an urge to simplify, creating large areas of colour… where she hopes to create a space in which she and the viewer can feel free. She loves wildlife and is drawn to its tender and fragile aspects - a flock of birds flying over a big blue sea, or a group of baby moorhens feeding by a
lily pond while her dog sleeps in the foreground. She also finds inspiration within her kitchen, with the vibrant colours of fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers, and various ceramic jugs or pots often being composed into a still life. She works mainly in oil, but sometimes uses watercolour to loosen up, or to inspire a larger oil painting. Like any true artist, she is always striving for something better and never underestimates the complexities of handling paint! Of course, she has her own techniques and ways of working, but ‘it has a will of its own’ and she is often ‘amazed, sometimes baffled by what happens once the process of painting begins’. As she says ‘It’s never easy, there is a constant feeling of being unsettled when not painting. Yet when I start to work, I face a new dilemma as my vision of how the painting should be is sometimes completely different
to what emerges, as if something else has taken control. Knowing when to trust that and not interfere is key, but it’s not always obvious’. To see more of Claire’s work, please visit clairelovellpaintings.co.uk or visit her Facebook page www.facebook. com/clairelovellpaintings or you can call her on 07811532597.

Exhibiting Artists:
Following the enormous success of the Arts and Crafts Alive in Brockhampton last year, the organisers have made some changes to broaden the scope of the exhibition. There will be 24 artists exhibiting, many of whom are new and have not exhibited in h.Art or Herefordshire before. There will be live demonstrations during the week. Some artists hope to replicate examples of the exceptional work to be found in All Saints’. This will include stone carving, embroidery and textile work. All Saints’ is of course an exhibition in itself, with exceptional tapestries by Edward Burne-Jones which were made in the William Morris workshops. There is also wood carving by George Jack and stained glass by Christopher Whall.

Oil painter Mary Edwards depicts intimate moments of rural life and the people who live in it. Many of her paintings explore the interaction between people and the animals they share their lives with - from domesticated and farm animals to those living in the wild but sharing our environment. Mary’s work has been exhibited far and wide, including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, The National Assembly for Wales and the National Eisteddfod of Wales.

Maryanne Hawes - STUDIO 4
Maryanne Hawes is showing her work this year in her new studio/gallery space which nestles at the edge of a field overlooking woodland at her home just outside Chepstow. Maryanne’s work reflects the places that are special to her; the Wye Valley and Cornwall in particular. These mixed media, abstract, expressive landscapes result from the unseen energy of people and places, as well as Maryanne’s personal experiences and memories. Original paintings are available to buy, as well as prints and cards.
Studio 12 is at Gloucester City Works, the home of Gloucester Scrapstore. Once you are on Alfred Street, go through the pair of black gates and the entrance to Deborah’s workshop is at the rear of the large red corrugated shed which is a building opposite the scrap store. Deborah’s sculptures are also exhibited in the cafe, where you can have a drink and slice of cake. 07967 643268 debsjharrison@hotmail.com www.debsharrison-sculptor.co.uk

An eclectic career followed by redundancy gave Wendy the opportunity to explore her real passion and start a new career in fused glass. Inspired by her cottage garden, Wendy uses the glass for colour, texture and light to create large fused glass flowers. The imagery in Wendy’s work is close to nature, sometimes abstract but always colourful. Her unique style of creating large and small-scale pieces blend with the natural surroundings of garden or parkland.
David Skidmore is an award-winning wildlife Artist, a member of The Wildlife Art society International, and capturing the natural world in all of its glory is his passion. Printmaking is an extension of drawing which is why I like it and find the various processes fascinating, addictive and frustrating all at the same time! My Coloured etchings are mainly printed on various handmade papers with aqueous pigment - the torn edges distinguish these prints and all are unique as the colours can vary from print to print, these are then mounted onto Somerset etching paper, and hand-printed in limited editions. I have made lots of new work for Open Studios this year which include etchings, collographs, paintings, mixed media and cards. patkingstudio@gmail.com 6 Sandys Road, 07976 941376 Ombersley www.patkingstudio.com WR9 ODY

CRAFT POTTERS ASSOCIATION As the national body supporting UK studio ceramicists, the Craft Potters Association plays an important role in the lives of hundreds of ceramic makers.
3. CPA Fellows are peer nominated by Selected members and granted by the CPA Council in recognition of their work and influence in supporting the CPA and UK ceramics.
Set up to ‘promote and develop high quality pottery’, the CPA has spent 60 years supporting UK studio ceramics through their gallery, magazine, annual events and wide range of members’ benefits.
4. Honorary Fellowship is awarded to makers who have demonstrated a lifetime’s work supporting the ceramics industry.
CPA membership is staged at four levels: 1. Associate membership is available to anyone who wishes to join the CPA’s network of makers, collectors and general ceramics enthusiasts. Currently Associate members stretches to nearly 1,000 both in the UK and overseas. 2. Makers who’ve reached a significant degree of skill and proficiency in their craft can apply for Selected membership, which gives them voting rights on CPA business and the opportunity to show and sell their work in our London gallery.
The CPA’s gallery on Great Russell Street, the Contemporary Ceramics Centre, was until recently the only gallery in London exclusively showcasing ceramics works. As well as supporting a regular turnover of exciting exhibitions by important and emerging UK and international makers. First published in 1970, Ceramic Review magazine – originally the CPA’s newsletter – is an important and successful vehicle that continually fuels interest in international studio ceramics. Every year, the CPA stages a number of exhibitions and opportunities for members to showcase and sell
their work beyond the CPA gallery. The two major CPA-run exhibitions; Oxford Ceramics Fair and Ceramic Art London, have gathered pace over many years to become cornerstones in the UK ceramics calendar, with Ceramic Art London, staged near Kings Cross every March, this year attracting over 5,000 visitors and staging talks by the likes of KeithBrymer Jones and Grayson Perry. Those who choose to join the CPA benefit from a wide range of offers and opportunities. From discounts on Ceramic Review, materials, events and ceramic works at the Contemporary Ceramics Centre, to exhibition opportunities at Oxford and their new show in York, to membership on their online forum and a weekly e-newsletter detailing important opportunities. CPA membership really is the best way to further your career by joining the UK’s largest network of potters and ceramic artists. Visit www.craftpotters.com for more information

Gabriele’s work concentrates on simple forms, trying to integrate balance and tension, stillness and movement, expansion and the containment of volume, precision and spontaneity.
Being creative and technically minded, Mandy decided to focus on Nerikomi technique, in porcelain, and hand-built her pots. She like the challenge of creating illusive and intricate patterns. Mandy’s works are designed to look graceful and minimalist, conjure a feeling of lightness. Her creations are both functional and decorative: beautiful objects to behold and use.

Emily’s handbuilt, painterly ceramic vessels explore surface decoration, where panels of clay are treated with layers of coloured slip to achieve the desired depth of surface. Her soft colour palette draws inspiration from the clouds and landscape; surfaces hold similarities to misty skies, memories of a walk, or a view across the sea. Each piece is explored much like the composition of a painting, and each piece becomes an interpretation of an earlier impression or experience. Educated in Switzerland, Kirsti studied paintings and ceramics in Rome and then ceramics at Manchester Collage of Art.
