4 COVER CREATIVE HELEN HIGGINS
HELEN HIGGINS - CERAMICS Helen’s ceramic figurative sculptures are both endearing and intriguing, seeming to have their own personal character and mannerisms. Recent work features animal and human figures wearing ‘dress-up’ costumes or ‘onesies’ and sometimes wearing hooded tops or masks. The artist is fascinated by the idea of disguise or incognito. The figures are often an analogy for how people often hide a fragile self-esteem behind a robust façade or disguise, often pretending to be what they are not. Some figures have narrow openings literally cut into their bases like scars. The viewer is invited to peer into them to slowly reveal sentimental objects or details and décor on the walls of the interior, revealing the ‘beauty within’. Helen works from home in a small studio near the historic South Wales town of Merthyr Tydfil. She has a background in window dressing and figurine painting and taught Secondary Art and Design. She studied Ceramics at UWIC in Cardiff where she achieved 1st class BA Hons Degree, graduating in 1997. www.helenhigginsceramics.bigcartel.com www.etsy.com/uk/shop/HiggsCeramics IG: helenhigginsceramics

EXHIBITION farOpen
farOpen STUDIOS 6 - 14 JULY 2019 The artists and makers of the Wye Valley, Forest of Dean and Severnside, are busy making preparations for their third annual farOpen studio trail. In late June and early July 2019 visitors will be welcomed into the studios, galleries and workshops of 50 practitioners in locations as far flung as Newent in the north and St Arvans in the South, Gloucester and Hartpury in the East and Penallt in the West. Major exhibitions will be held at Taurus Crafts in Lydney and at The Dean Heritage Museum, Soudley before and during the open studios event. The artists and makers who live and work in the locality share a passion for the area with its idiosyncratic landscape and stalwart buildings, its rugged history of mining, metal working and forestry, and
they are always delighted to share their enthusiasm for the region that inspires their work. Search out their studios at the end of forest tracks, tucked under the trees on the edges of villages, perched high on hillsides with magnificent views, or snuggling in the small towns that dot the region. Wherever you find them, there will be a warm welcome, great conversations and, quite possibly, tea and cake! We all love looking through the sketchbooks of artists and makers, and exploring the tools, equipment and materials that they use; farOpen offers a unique opportunity to have that experience. And of course, there will be a wealth of beautiful objects to browse and buy. farOpen gives you an unmissable opport-
unity to acquire affordable original artwork direct from the makers. Dip into the farOpen website to sample the work of all 77 members of the organisation: www.faropen.co.uk. If you can’t wait until the summer, contact details are all there so you can reach any of the participating artists right now. Soon, much sought-after hard copy farOpen brochures will be available in shops, libraries, cafes and other public spaces throughout the area. Lavishly illustrated with images of the work of all participating artists, they give vital information together with maps and directions for your visits. www.faropen.co.uk forestandriversopen@gmail.com FB: farOpen IG:farOpen1

Maryanne Hawes is captivated by the influence of what we can’t see – how the unseen energies of people, spaces and places affect how we perceive the world, and how this energy contributes to a complex and changing emotional topography. As she explores this psychological territory through colour, shape and line, she finds enigmatic, half-imagined forms, echoes of a dream or a childhood memory; abstract images moulded by thoughts, values, beliefs and experiences, as well as often reflecting the seen –or feltenvironment.

12 EXHIBITION
ART IN PENALLT
ART IN PENALLT
30 August - 1 September 2019
Nestled in the Welsh hills above Monmouth in the lower Wye Valley lies the tiny village of Penallt. In 1542 it was designated as part of the ‘Hundred’ of Raglan. It was used primarily for hunting by the local aristocracy and latterly supported a prosperous millstone quarry industry, the remains of which can still be found in the surrounding woodland. Today, the village is mainly a mix of small-scale farmland and woodland stretching down to the river Wye. There is also a growing community of artists and makers and in the Autumn of 2011 a group of them came together to mount an exhibition. The overarching ambition was to show off the very best of the work of local artists and makers. The venture was a great success and the ‘Art in Penallt’ group were encouraged to repeat the show the following year. This is now the ninth year in which the exhibition has been mounted. This year there will be more than 40
exhibitors, chosen from among double that number of applicants. The selection committee have had a particularly difficult task choosing material from the outstanding mix of artists and makers, many of whom are already well known, including our patrons: the artist and sculptor Richard Wills and ceramicist Walter Keeler. All material in the exhibition is for sale and every year since 2011 the value of sales has increased. Prices of the art work are very competitive and range from a couple of pounds to thousands. The exhibitors include several who do indoor and outdoor demonstrations or give short talks about their work. Art in Penallt is keen to attract new talent to the exhibition and so we do not usually permit any exhibitor to show on more than two consecutive occasions. This year we are also having a change of venue, moving to Humble by Nature, at Upper Meend Farm on the edge of the village (see www.humblebynature. com). It will be ideal for the expanded show with both indoor and outdoor space for the exhibitors. In addition to the main exhibition (open Friday, Saturday and Sunday) there will be demonstrations, an art workshop and numerous stalls in marquees and gazebos on Saturday and Sunday only. Artists and makers will be on hand to talk about their work, including members of the Made in Monmouthshire cooperative.
Facilities for visitors are excellent: there is wheelchair access to all exhibition areas, adequate toilet provision, refreshments at the popular Pig and Apple cafe on the site, excellent car parking space and a team of helpers to provide information about the exhibition and local area. Entry will be £2.50 per person, for the whole event, with under 16s free. There is free entry to the ‘Meet the Artists’ evening on Thursday 29th August from 6pm to 8pm. As this is a working farm, dogs must be kept on leads. Art in Penallt is a not-for-profit organisation and since 2011, after covering costs, we have made donations totalling nearly £7,000 to a variety of charities. This year we will be supporting Young Minds, the Penallt Charity and Babington Meadow.

SUE CARR
Before training for four years as a production thrower in porcelain dinnerware in Canada, Sue Carr studied Geology and Biology at University. This has influenced her ceramic decoration and helped with her glaze chemistry. A childhood spent in South Africa has instilled a love of vivid colours. Sue’s joy of making pots has not waned over the last thirty seven years: the pots and the decoration are constantly evolving. At present the decoration features birds and flowers.
Many years ago, in the early 70s, Alex Orgill was a student at Hornsey College of Art. Alex trained as a graphic designer and went on to work at Pentagram in London and later at Total Design in Amsterdam.
Through the medium of sculpture, Teresa Wells explores the fragile relationship between man and his society. Isolation, miscommunication, frailty and strength are most attractive. Teresa employs an illustrative style that pertains to theatrical gesturing, with particular attention made in re-creating detail to the face, hands and feet. The strong athletic body shapes of dancers and athletes inspire her. When combined with geometric architectural supports, in steel, bronze and stone, Teresa aims to show a contemporary approach in our understanding of bronze sculpture, lifting it off the plinth and making it appear less monumental and traditional. t.wells321@sky.com 07906 322280 www.teresawells.co.uk FB: figurative.bronze.sculptor IG: teresa_wells_sculptor
TERESA WELLS
Richard’s paintings and prints have been exhibited across the UK and they are held in a number of public and private collections.
RICHARD CORBETT
Richard Corbett’s work has always been inspired by nature. Using Old Holland oils on board and canvas, he likes to capture the dappled light through the trees in summer gardens, on canal walks, across vast open skies and in more intimate spaces - hopefully creating a place where you can stop a while and contemplate.
Peter Dixon started turning wood as a creative pastime in the mid-90s whilst living and working in East Africa and South Asia.
PETER DIXON
Now UK-based, Peter uses locally sourced woods of unusual character and colour to which he may add carved and pierced features, apply texturing, scorching and pyrography techniques, stains and acrylics to achieve the final woodart piece. Peter has recently been approved as a tutor by the AWGB and looks forward to developing this part of his creative portfolio. peter-dixon@live.co.uk 07866430938 www.facebook.com/PDTurnings

A graduate from Hereford College of Art, Colin Biddle is influenced by the Futurist and abstract movements and uses water, oil, acrylic and mixed media to explore architectural, engineering and landscape with some local farm animal portraits. An Associate member of the Royal Photographic Society he has produced a number of experimental photographs of plants using their inherent chemistry to produce a printed unique image. Many images are already framed and ready to hang.
Every picture tells a story, and Hazel’s paintings that allow you to write your own story, embellishing the image with personal impressions and experiences of silence.
Tim’s passion is for quirky objects that ask to be handled, and at the same time have an everyday purpose. The pepper mill collection has evolved and developed over the last 4 years. An idea conceived from the wish to create a high quality product, irresistible to the kitchen/dining table whilst engaging with the lifestyle interests of the collector. The pepper mills are working sculptures, highly tactile everyday objects that are a pleasure to hold whilst producing finely milled pepper and salt.

ARTISTS TO WATCH IN 2019
ARTISTS TO WATCH IN 2019 Creates Magazine is an advocate for supporting ‘emerging artists’ and new talents across the UK. This edition is no exception as we have selected seven artists and makers to look out for across all disciplines near you... We have provided small introductions of each artist for you to familiarise yourself with their work and all the contact information for you to continue to follow them on their creative journeys.
HEULWEN WRIGHT Over the past year, Heulwen Wright’s glass landscape and screen printed work has naturally evolved and developed and taken on a more abstract feel. She uses enamel techniques to reflect her interest in the amazing abstract patterns that cover the surface of the earth and how these appear when seen from above. Whilst she continues to make a Welsh language screen printed tableware range, her current work focuses on bathroom washbasins, tiles and splash backs, which have been developed over the past three years. Different regions and results of differing geological forces create the most amazing patterns, including streams, salt lakes, deserts, glaciers, sea beds and volcanic activity. This is an endless source of inspiration for Heulwen. Each piece she creates is unique and has incredibly intricate patterning and details which make a bespoke piece of functional art that is intriguing, sophisticated and elegant. Some of Heulwen’s current collection will be on display at London’s New Designers at the Business Design Centre from 26th to 29th June 2019. 07812460774 heulwenwright.glass@outlook.com www.heulwenwrightglass.co.uk IG: heulwenwright.glass

SUSAN SMITH
ELLA HENDY At the age of nineteen, Ella received an award from HRH Prince Charles as a prize-winning artist in the Young Artists’ Britain competition. She works in a variety of different mediums, to create art with character and intrigue. Ella is fascinated by the idea of ripping wallpaper off to create a blank canvas of endless possibilities, or discovering something unexpected – a hidden message, picture, even a portal to another world. These are themes that are explored in her work.
ella@ellaart.co.uk 07472747355 www.ellaart.co.uk Linda’s photographic interests and themes are quite diverse, reflecting both her love of movement in nature and sport as well as simply being outdoors. She spent much of her childhood near the coast; and when she is away from it, it draws her back. Linda’s coastal series of images captures the peace and tranquillity that can be found by people of all ages where the land meets the sea. The tones and textures of the land, sea and sky combine to create a beautiful space where we can find escape in simple activities and have the time to stop and stare. Linda was delighted in 2018 when a series of her coastal images resulted in the award of the Associateship of the Royal Photographic Society.
