Together Let’s Build a Better Doncaster

In 2021 we have a unique opportunity to change Doncaster for a generation In December 2019 Don Valley elected it’s first ever Conservative MP. Across Doncaster the total Conservative vote was only 1018 behind Labour, with 62% of people voting against Labour. In this Mayoral election your vote will count and you could make the change Doncaster needs. We’ve launched our manifesto detailing our core polices so you can be clear on what I stand for and what my priorities will be. So if you want to find out more about how we’ll clean up the Borough, reduce traffic jams, rebalance our economy, get fit for the future and give back to community volunteers visit our website

FROM A POLICE A thank you from your District Commander This month, District Commander Melanie Palin talks to us about Doncaster Policing Team’s achievements this past year and their priorities for the upcoming year

My priorities will always be to keep people safe, uphold standards, deliver an excellent service and improve victim satisfaction and public confidence. This will be achieved through tackling issues that you, the people of Doncaster, tell us are important

Page 6

Issue 013 - April/May 2021

E PERSPECTIVE: I became District Commander in October. This is a role I have been greatly looking forward to. I’m a resident of Doncaster and feel well placed to understand the issues that are most important to those who live and work here. I see a real opportunity to work with partners to improve outcomes for the communities my team serves. My priorities will always be to keep people safe, uphold standards, deliver an excellent service and improve victim satisfaction and public confidence. This will be achieved through tackling issues that you, the people of Doncaster, tell us are important. In 2020 we saw the introduction of a dedicated off-road bike team, which is tasked with addressing anti-social and illegal behaviour from riders of off-road bikes and quads. The team has already had significant success, with calls relating to off-road bikes in Doncaster reducing significantly in the months following the team being introduced. Another positive for neighbourhood policing this year was the re-opening of Edlington police station. The team is firmly embedded in the local community, with PCSOs building strong relationships with local schools and the new station acting as a base for partners including the council’s Stronger Families team, St Leger housing and other support agencies. This

approach has led to hot spots of anti-social behaviour and illegal activity being identified more quickly and swift action being taken. Several closure notices have been served on properties in the area and feedback from residents is positive. I would also like to acknowledge the hard work of our team dedicated to tacking organised crime groups and their associated criminality. Our Fortify team is tasked with disrupting this illegal activity and has continued with its operations despite the challenges COVID has presented. Over the last 12 months the officers have made 278 arrests, carried out 300 stop and searches and seized a significant amount of cash and drugs. Several offenders identified by the team are now serving time in jail. The pursuit of those involved in organised crime is relentless and will continue into the New Year at pace. I would like to say thank you to everyone who has offered their support over the last 12 months. The impact that every smile, friendly hello and encouraging wave has on each and every one of the officers serving in Doncaster cannot be overestimated. I know it’s been tough – and I think we all acknowledge that the challenge isn’t over yet - but I’m certain that if we continue to support each other, look out for our friends and neighbours and carry on working as a team we’ll find our way back to some semblance of normal in the not-too-distant future.

Doncaster Dad writes children’s book and autobiography to help deal with bereavement When the country went into the first Coronavirus lockdown in March 2020, Richard (Ric) Hart spent the time writing a book to help his son Hugo – and other young children - deal with bereavement Ric’s wife Jade died in 2018 at the age of 33 just after giving birth to Hugo. Hugo and Daddy’s Night-time Adventures is written as a poem and linked by colourful illustrations to capture moments, memories, and feelings around the loss of Hugo’s mummy. Doncaster Echo had a chat with Ric to find out more about the children’s book and his new autobiography, Pupy Love. What inspired you to write a children’s book? I wrote Hugo and Daddy’s Night-time Adventures at the start of lockdown, so I could turn a negative trauma of losing his mummy at birth into positive magic in the sky while daddy reads to him at night. How Hugo interprets the loss of his mum for me was key.

Page 12

I have also just published Pupy Love, an autobiography of mine and Jades lives together from 2002, all the way up to December 2020. We always spelt pupy with one P when we wrote notes to each other so this is why the book is called Pupy Love, the nicknames we both called each other. Pupy Love was published Valentine’s Day; this symbolises the importance of this day, the day we initially met, and the exact day we found out we were having a baby boy. The book shares our lives together but also my grief and being a single parent to Hugo and in lockdown. Have you written a book before? I have never written before nor have I done poetry, but I guess I just followed my dreams and what I had been intending to do before lockdown. It’s amazing what you can do when you really want to do something.

Issue 013 - April/May 2021

What did you find most challenging? Looking after my boy 24/7 in lockdown with no support and grieving deep for Jade was one of my hardest challenges to date. I also went on a running journey from July 2018 - December 2019, also running the Yorkshire marathon in memory of Jade. Who do you hope the book will help? I hope Hugo and Daddy’s Night-time Adventures provides inspiration to others that, it’s not what we do, it’s how we do it, helping children who have may have lost a loved one, especially in Covid times. Pupy Love will reach so many of our friends and family and also the general public; it’s a true love story of how love conquers all, and also how I dealt with losing my best friend, lover, soulmate and wife.

What are your plans for the future? I have two more children’s books coming out in June, and I’m going to put more of my energy into children’s books as becoming an author was my therapy, and has now become a huge passion. Hugo and Daddy’s Thailand Adventures comes out in June 2021 and Hugo and Daddy’s Superhero Adventures also comes out in June 2021. All proceeds of Hugo and Daddy’s Night-time Adventures goes to Cruse bereavement care Charity, and Pupy Love’s proceeds are being donated to Way Widowed & Young which helps young widowed people. Business expert Katherine Rowell from D&K Wills talks to us about how the past year has changed for many people and the increase in a need for a will

What lessons we have learnt? The light is at the end of the tunnel or so it seems as we have a plan for the easing of restrictions and getting back to ‘normal.’ It has made me wonder what lessons my industry has learnt and how we can change for 2021 and beyond. Over the past 12 months we have seen an increase in the number of people looking to make wills with a lot of this push coming from the under 40s who have been making the most of the ability to make wills remotely; this is an option that many are looking to keep, myself included. If 2020 has shown us anything it is that we need to be more flexible in how we do business and to make it easy for people to put a will into place.

Page 16

Surveys still show that between 56-60% of people do not have a will in place and equally as concerningly, only 29% had a Will that accurately reflects their wishes. This shows that as an industry we have a huge responsibility to increase the education around the importance of having a Will and keeping it updated. Throughout 2021 we will be carrying on doing appointments online and also in person from May 2021 when the guidelines allow us to enter peoples homes. If you have any questions about Will writing or are unsure if you need to update your Will please contact me on katherine@ dandkwills.co.uk or 07486424465
