FROM A POLICE Tackling anti-social behaviour in and around the Frenchgate Centre

“Last month we saw a joint operation between our Central Neighbourhood Team, the Doncaster Council Enforcement Teams and Frenchgate Security staff. This was a success with some great feedback from the public and some good joint working across these different teams.”

Issue 019 - April/May 2022

E PERSPECTIVE: This month, Temporary Chief Superintendent Ian Proffitt shares some positive news with Doncaster Echo readers about the ongoing issues of anti-social behaviour, begging, rough sleeping and illegal drug use in the town centre In my last column, I spoke about the complex challenges facing us here in Doncaster, and the ongoing issues of antisocial behaviour, begging, rough sleeping and illegal drug use in the town centre. And I would like to start with sharing some positive results in this area over the last couple of months. We have been working hard to tackle anti-social behaviour in and around the Frenchgate Centre and have made a number of arrests over the last couple of months and weeks. Last month we saw a joint operation between our Central Neighbourhood Team, the Doncaster Council Enforcement Teams and Frenchgate Security staff. This was a success with some great feedback from the public and some good joint working across these different teams. This will continue throughout the spring. Officers have been working in partnership with the Complex Lives Team at Doncaster Council to tackle homelessness and begging and provide people with the required support. However, there remains a core of individuals who are resistant to such help, but we continue to work with partners to address this.

During the day a number of warrants were executed in the Armthorpe area, alongside highvisibility patrols, speed enforcement activity and engagement events. Six people were arrested for various crimes including possession of Class A and B drugs, possession of an offensive weapon and domestic violence and harassment. These activities also led to the seizure of substantial amounts of Class A drugs, totalling a street value of nearly £4,000, along with cannabis, cash and a crossbow. A number of traffic offence reports were also issued and a stolen vehicle was recovered. Our Neighbourhood Policing Teams also supported our Operational Support Unit for a further day of action targeting criminality linked to organised crime gangs, as part of Operation Scorpion. In total there were six arrests, 14 vehicles seized worth around £127,000, and multiple stop and searches and warnings handed out for other more minor offences. This is a work in progress, but I can assure everyone in Doncaster that my teams will continue their hard work throughout 2022.
