FROM A POLICE
How to enjoy s In this issue, Doncaster’s District Commander, Chief Superintendent Melanie Palin, talks to our readers about enjoying the summer safely
‘With restaurants, pubs and beer gardens open, and the opening of nightclubs on the horizon, please drink responsibly – both for your safety and that of others. Know your limits. Drinking too much is not an excuse for criminality and poor behaviour.’

E PERSPECTIVE:
summer safely After the difficult year we have all endured, I know everyone will be looking forward to the rest of the summer with great anticipation. There will be people to catch up with, missed celebrations to make up for and long-awaited holidays to go on. And of course, I want you all to enjoy yourselves - we all deserve it! But I also want you to be mindful of keeping yourselves, and each other, safe at the same time. One of the great things to come from the last year has been the renewed love we have all found for our public green spaces. They have provided much-needed relief during all of the stages of lockdown we have endured. I want everyone to be able to enjoy those spaces, and encourage you to be considerate of others. Bin your litter or take it home with you after enjoying a day or evening out. With restaurants, pubs and beer gardens open, and the opening of nightclubs on the horizon, please drink responsibly – both for your safety and that of others. Know your limits. Drinking too much is not an excuse for criminality and
poor behaviour. I know many of you will be taking the opportunity to take day trips or go on holiday, so it’s important to ensure that your home is secure. It takes a thief a matter of minutes to access your home or garden shed through an unlocked door or open window. Please make sure doors and windows are locked and don’t leave valuables on display. Since restrictions eased again in May, you may have started to see my teams out and about a bit more – doing pop-up community events. It has been fantastic to get back out and chat to people face to face. For those of you still unable to venture out, don’t worry – there are lots of ways you can get in touch with us. Your local officers and their contact details are available on the SYP website, and by registering with SYP Alerts you can choose to receive the news and information that is relevant to you direct by email, phone or text message. You can also keep up to date with all three of the Doncaster teams on Facebook and Twitter. Have a fantastic summer.

Yorkshire-based company encouraging the canine community to help tackle lockdown litter For the second year running, K9 Nation – an online community based in Yorkshire for dog owners and dog-friendly businesses, is asking owners to put their best paw forward and help do their part to clean up the UK, between the 28th-30th August 2021. The company is looking to support people in Doncaster to run an event in your area!
Taking place over the bank holiday weekend, the event will help to raise money for charity partner Support Dogs. Last year, the clean-up campaign helped raise £1,000 for DogsTrust, with hundreds of dog owners and their pups showing their support on social media, using the #K9Cleanup hashtag.
More than two million pieces of litter are dropped in the UK every day, costing taxpayers over £1 billion per year in street clean-up. Following the easing of lockdown, levels of litter in recreational and outdoor areas have sharply increased, posing a threat not only to the environment, but also a major health risk to dogs from both injury and illness.
to take part, we’re working to change people’s attitudes towards keeping their favourite walks clean and safe for the entire community.”
Partnering with industry sponsors PitPat and Adios Plastic, K9 Nation wants to grow on the success of last year’s K9 Clean Up, which saw over 50 businesses take part and the event reach over 125,000 people.
K9 Nation Founder, Becky Baker, said: “I think people underestimate just how much of an impact they can have on their local environment, simply by picking up a plastic bottle here or a crisp packet there. By encouraging more dog lovers
Proceeds from the event will go towards Support Dogs, a national charity who train and support specialist assistance dogs, helping people with various medical conditions to increase their independence and quality of life.
Page 8
The event aims to encourage the canine community to raise awareness of the impact of litter on the environment, with dog owners collecting waste they may spot on their daily walks.
Issue 015 - August/September 2021 This year, as part of our K9 Clean Up campaign, the company is offering support to dog owners that are interested in setting up a local K9 Clean Up event. You can get access to some digital and physical resources to help get dog owners working together to clean up our favourite dog walks! The event is open to all owners across the UK, and those wishing to go the extra mile can support the fundraising efforts by purchasing a clean-up kit including badges, a nose, skin and paw balm, a collar tag for their pup, some gloves to keep human hands safe, and some Adios Plastic compostable poo bags. If you or your business would like to take part in the campaign, find out more or purchase a Clean Up Kit, visit – www.k9nation.dog/ k9cleanup/

Barnby Dun Rovers do the double! Local teenage football team, Barnby Dun Rovers – Under16s, are celebrating winning the double this last season. The team were champions of the league and also won the cup for the 2020/2021 season and cannot wait for the new season to start! Since the previous manager’s departure, the team has slowly rebuilt and progressed year on year with more young adults joining each season. Despite all odds they have finally been rewarded for all their hard work and dedication by not only winning the league but also the cup 2020/2021! How does the team feel to win the league and cup this year? The lads were unfortunate not to have won the league twice after playing some really great football which put them in a title winning position, then covid hit. They had so many challenges last year with stopping and starting of matches and all the restrictions of space and sanitising of equipment when they were allowed
Page 12
to train. They adapted well and have kept to the rules and regulations. Who has stood out this season? The presentation event coming up on the 25th July will see them all receive a trophy but there are a couple of key members that were voted to receive specialist trophies - Players’ Player is Bailey Buzzard and Parents’ Player and Manager’s Player awards both go to Logan Power, our amazing goalkeeper! What challenges have the team faced? The resilience of them all throughout Covid-19 has made us all very proud parents. A couple of the lads did actually contract it and had to self-isolate along with members of the family so some have experienced the effects worse than

others but all have been very understanding and just accepted and go on with it! What are the plans for the future? We just hope that they will keep going strong together and look forward to next season when they move to adult leagues. We are now looking forward to the upcoming season with brand-new kits courtesy of our two main sponsors DRS Rail and a local favourite takeaway, ACE pizza (inc Pizza La Vera). We have also been kindly donated further funds from the local Co-op (Kirk Sandall) which will help with the purchase of socks and winter jackets! We just want to say a BIG thank you to them and lets go win it again in 2021/2022! Paul Swaby, manager, told us: “When covid first hit the boys had put themselves in a good
position to win the league. Unfortunately the league was ended early. Then we returned after the first lockdown training hard and as often as we could. Credit to the boys, they work really hard to get themselves fit and ready for the upcoming season. The boys took to the field and showed a determination I’d not seen like this from them before: they grew from strength to strength each game with a true togetherness and team spirit. I was so proud of them for what they had achieved! A true showing of team spirit and determination a truly just reward for overcoming the setbacks and enforcing their dedication.” Doncaster Echo wishes the Barnby Dun Rovers the best of luck for the upcoming season where hopefully they will be champions again.

Business expert Katherine Rowell from D&K Wills talks to us about how lasting powers of attorney can be hard to get your head around within England and Wales, but can help to give peace of mind for the future
Peace of mind and planning for uncertainty Unlike a will, a lasting power of attorney is used during life and normally used to help manage someones finances or healthcare choices when they have lost the capacity to do so themselves. A Lasting Power of Attorney allows you to appoint someone to make decisions as if they were you, providing you still have mental capacity to be able to carry out your instructions. There are two different types: Firstly, health and welfare. This can only be used when you have lost mental capacity and allows someone else to make decisions about your healthcare, for example, that you would prefer to have care in your own home rather than residential care elsewhere.
Page 18
Or that in certain situations you would not want life-sustaining treatment. Secondly - finance and property. This allows someone to deal with your finances such as pensions, investments, savings or sale of the house. You can nominate someone to do this while you have capacity (especially useful for those with businesses) or on incapacity only. Contrary to popular belief spouses and next of kin do not automatically have these rights and without a Llasting power of attorney someone is appointed on your behalf by the Office of the Public Guardian which is exceptionally costly and time consuming. Please get in touch if this is something you feel would benefit you and your family or if you have any questions on how they work.
