INTRODUCTION Hello and welcome to November’s edition of Our Goole! This year has truly flown by and Christmas is creeping ever closer. With that in mind, we have decided to launch an appeal to help disadvantaged children in our area receive a Christmas gift. You can find more details about the Our Goole Christmas Toy Appeal on pages 6 and 7. It would be fantastic if we could all utilise that famous Goole community spirit and collect lots of gifts for local families - could you add one more present to your Christmas shopping list? And what do you think of our beautiful cover

image? Although a familiar sight to many people in Goole, with the change in seasons and weather, there are countless backdrops to the docks and we think the colours in this one are stunning. The image was sent to us by Anne Howard Webb - thanks, Anne. We’ve got some great news stories and business for you to peruse in this issue and please also remember to check out our Facebook page, @ourgoole, for regular news and updates on what’s happening in our town and surrounding areas. We’ll be back again in December, but for now, sit back and relax with a cuppa and your new issue of Our Goole!

The Our Goole

Christmas T Father Christmas will be leaving piles of presents in the homes of children across the world in just a few weeks, but for some children it’s just another day. Our aim this year is to ensure as many children as possible in our area receive a gift from Father Christmas. Lisa Warrener, Director of CreateTVT which owns Our Goole, said: “As a team we wanted to do something to make a difference in our community

this Christmas and what better way than to help get gifts to children facing difficult circumstances who might not get a gift otherwise? The thought of a child potentially waking up on Christmas morning without a gift to open is heartbreaking and it happens right on our doorstep for a wide variety of reasons. We know how generous the people of Goole are, and we’ve seen first hand over the years how the locals pull together in a tremendous show of community spirit when they need to - we’ve reported on it on many occasions. So, we also know that the people of Goole will be onboard with us when it comes to helping make Christmas special for disadvantaged children in our area.

“Equally, many children would love to be able to hand their parents, or care giver, a gift on Christmas morning and are unable to do so, again for a number of reasons. We are therefore also collecting gifts for children to give to their parents. Unwanted gift sets, toiletries or duplicated gifts you have received yourself would all make great presents for children to hand to their own parents.”

gloves, hats, scarves, stationery.

Lisa added: “We would love to make the toy appeal an annual one and we hope the people of Goole and surrounding areas rally together to make this happen. So many of our children receive dozens of presents, could you perhaps just add one more to your shopping bag for a disadvantaged child?”

All gifts must be new, unused and unwrapped.

FROM A POLICE

Are you ready for dar winter weather? This month, Sgt David Lonsdale offers advice on staying safe as the nights draw in

“Always leave a light on in more than one room so it looks like someone is in.”

10

Issue 022-November 2017

E PERSPECTIVE:

rk nights and With the evenings starting to get darker, this month we’ve put together a list of suggestions to help you be prepared for the winter months: Your home Don’t let a burglar think that no one is home. Always leave a light on in more than one room so it looks like someone is in. Use timer switches so that the lights come on as it starts to get dark, especially if you are at work or going to be out all day. Consider installing outside sensor lights that are activated by movement, especially at the back of your property.

Your car Make sure you check your car lights before you set off and consider carrying a spare light bulb incase a bulb blows whilst you are out. Do they need to be cleaned before you set off? Are your registration plates clean?

Crimes in your area: • Entry was gained into

a property in Goole and a vehicle stolen. It was later found abandoned nearby. • A car was damaged as a result of it being scratched with a sharp instrument. • Fuel was siphoned from a car parked on a driveway. • A secure vehicle parked on a driveway was broken into and then stolen. • Entry was gained into a rear garden and six alloy wheels were stolen.

Make sure your windscreen washer bottle is full of water and screen wash. To run out of water in the dark on muddy roads is not a safe or pleasant experience.

• A rear UPVC door was damaged in an attempted break in.

Check the tyres. Have they got plenty of tread on them and are they at the correct pressure? If in doubt, get them checked!

• An exhaust was stolen from a vehicle parked on a driveway.

Think about what you might need if you break down in the cold. Consider keeping a blanket and a torch in the boot. Do you take a mobile phone with you and is it charged up before you set off? Ensure that you have a can of de-icer and a window scraper in your car for those frosty nights or mornings. Always make sure that the windows and windscreen are fully clear before beginning to drive. It’s very dangerous (and an offence) to try driving with a peep hole in your windscreen! That extra few minutes cleaning your windows could save your life, or someone else’s!

• A bottle was thrown at a window of a property causing it to smash. • A van was broken into and a bicycle stolen. • Entry was gained into a property and a laptop stolen.

Trustees retire from The Cou A husband and wife, who have been involved with The Courtyard on Boothferry Road since it first opened its doors 20 years ago, have retired Jonathan and Ros Taylor first became involved with the Boothferry Road community project before renovation works even started and since then have gone on to play a crucial role in the project’s success. Ros was awarded an MBE for her services to the community, which includes work she has done for many voluntary sector projects over the years, as well as her work for The Courtyard. She was instrumental in getting The Courtyard to the point it’s at today; a hub of the community used by dozens of community groups and hundreds of locals each year. Her husband, Jonathan, also played a hands-on role at The Courtyard and was

12

heavily involved in the initial restoration of the building and ongoing maintenance work. The courtyard is a former Victorian school, which took two years to renovate, from 1995 to 1997. It now employs 14 members of staff and has a team of volunteers that help in every area of the building. Tracy Wharvell, chair of the board, said: “I would like to extend my gratitude to both Ros and Jonathan. What they have done for Goole and the wider community has been amazing. Thank you Ros and Jonathan on behalf of the board and the staff of the Boothferry Road Community Project.”

This month we focus on Goole & District RSPCA As avid Our Goole readers will know, we love trying to help Goole RSPCA find families for cats and kittens in their care and now, as December approaches, we are once again trying to find forever homes for these gorgeous felines. Could you give a playful pal their Christmas wish of a loving home? Goole & District RSPCA is a registered charity and, while they support and work with the national RSPCA, they are primarily responsible for generating their own funds to help and care for sick, injured and desperate animals in the local area. The branch is run by a team of volunteers who spend their time fundraising, doing home checks or looking after the animals in their care. The volunteers are extremely dedicated – they even foster cats and kittens in their own homes until they are ready to find their forever families. Some of the kittens were born in care and others have been rescued by the inspectorate. They are socialised in a fosterer’s home where possible so they become purrfectly playful and sociable cats. The RSPCA do not re-home until kittens are at least eight weeks of age and have had their first vaccinations to ensure they are in the best of health.

Georgina Petty, press officer and volunteer for Goole RSPCA said: “With Christmas just around the corner, we have lots of character cats and a few playful kittens growing up in care. We want to find forever homes for our fab felines so they can enjoy winter in a comfy bed with the company they deserve. We have cats to suit all different kinds of families and each one has its own personality so we are sure you’ll find one you’ll fall in love with!” 16

Issue 022-November 2017

Can you give a furry friend a forever home? Goole RSPCA has currently got a number of cats and kittens looking for their forever home Cinnamon Cinnamon is a handsome 18-month-old. When he was taken into foster care he was in a poor state and was wary of people. It is believed he had been on the streets for a long time. Now with a warm bed, good food and lots of love, he is the picture of health. Although he is still learning to trust humans, once you have gained his trust you’ll have a friend for life in Cinnamon.

Sox Sox is initially shy when you meet him but once he gets to know you he is very playful and sweet. Sox would love to sit in a box in a home that he can call his own.

Theo Theo is a gorgeous little kitten who is super friendly and loves cuddles. You can’t help but fall in love with him! He’d love a family to sit on the sofa with and get toasty and warm If you’ve been considering adopting a cat, Goole RSPCA could have the one for you. All cats and kittens adopted from Goole RSPCA are only done so after a home visit. You can arrange one by calling 07599 087527 between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 1pm on Saturday or for further information, visit the website, www.rspca-goole.co.uk Goole RSPCA charges adoption fees of £55 for an adult (over six-months-old) or £70 for a kitten. This covers neutering, blood testing, vaccinations, ID chipping and up-to-date de-fleaing and worming treatments. 17

MONEY RAISED FOR ELDERLY MUGGING VICTIM The people of Goole were left angry and upset after an elderly woman was mugged in broad daylight last month, so they clubbed together to raise money for her Following the mugging of the woman, who is 83, in the town last month, the people of Goole got together to raise funds for the lady, who had her bag stolen while she was out walking down Adeline Street in the middle of the day. Nicola Vause, who many people know from her mental health charity, Helping Others, decided to try and help raise some money for the lady. Nicola said: “When I heard about what happened I just wanted to do something to help the poor old lady. I thought it would be nice to do a collection for her and get her back the money that was taken from her when the thieves took her handbag. I posted on Facebook that I was collecting and people have been posting money through my door and sending it via PayPal ever since.” A salon in Goole, Instaglam on Boothferry Road, run by Brooke Gibbon and Kelly Duffin, has also 20

offered to pick the lady up and take her to the salon for a wash and blow dry and a manicure as an extra special treat. Nicola added: “We just want to show her that Goole isn’t all bad and that she doesn’t have to be frightened, there’s lots of people looking out for her. “She was overwhelmed by the generosity of the town and although she was still very anxious and shaken when I went to see her, she said that there are a lot of good people in Goole.” At the time of going to press, Nicola had received over 40 donations and almost £400 had been raised. Anyone with any information about the incident, which happened on Adeline Street at around 12.30pm on Saturday, October 14, is asked to contact Humberside Police on 101, quoting log number 292 of 14th October 2017. Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Awarding community heroes Selfless Goole residents could soon see themselves becoming a recipient of an award recognising their achievements Goole Town Council has launched the Mayor’s Annual Town Awards in order to recognise and thank local people for services to the community, and is encouraging residents to nominate individuals or community groups they think are worthy of an award. Cllr Malcolm Boatman, who put forward the proposal, said: “Quite often in our town it’s the bad and negative activities that get the limelight and these awards would be a great way of acknowledging the good things that happen in our community but don’t always get the recognition they deserve. “These awards would not need to be a costly

function for the council, it could be as simple as a certificate, with possibly a gift token that could come from the civic budget, and the mayor could then present these awards at the AGM or town meeting as their final duty before handing over to the new mayor.” The awards will be divided into categories such as ‘volunteer of the year’, ‘young achiever of the year’ and ‘selfless act of the year’ and community groups will also be able to get involved. If you would like to nominate anyone for a mayor’s award, please contact Goole Town Council directly on 01405 763652 or call into Junction.

In order for the specialist inspection works to be carried out safely and efficiently, the bridge will have to be closed to all traffic until completion. Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to use the bridge, although cyclists will have to dismount. All road vehicles will have to follow the diversion route that will be put in place.

East Yorkshire Motor Services route number 88 will continue to run, but will follow the diversion route during this period. A shuttle bus will be provided for the part of the journey between Rawcliffe and Rawcliffe Bridge. An East Riding of Yorkshire Council spokesperson said: “We apologise for the inconvenience this closure will cause, but ask motorists to bear with us whilst we take the necessary steps to try to ensure the long-term future of this bridge.”

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green tells us about some of the best ways to generate business leads

Leading the way Lead generation is something of a mystery to many businesses, but let’s have a look at some of the ways you could be more successful and boost the leads you generate.

Is your current focus too broad? Is it taking a lot of time and effort with little result? Are the businesses that you’re contacting already fully equipped and their needs already met? More importantly are they aware of

24

the benefits your service can offer them?

The best way to approach this is to be specific and stick to one or two services that you know you excel at. Your competitors will most likely be doing the same thing, so it’s not enough to tell people what you do. You must also tell them why they should choose you over your competitors. Branding is vital and can increase the amount of leads you generate. Be consistent across everything you do and ensure it reflects your brand. Some common methods of lead generation are: Telemarketing – calling potential customer to let them know about your business, or calling existing

Issue 022-November 2017

customers to tell them of an offer or new service. Referrals – existing loyal customers can generate leads for you, providing you have done a great job for them, of course! Promotions and gifts – online vouchers, free trials or free downloads, for example, can encourage people to engage with you. Networking – people buy from people, get out and network; you never know who you’ll meet. Even if they don’t need your service, they may well know someone who does. Keep a database - so you know when you need to re-engage with existing customers, for example, if you offer annual services get in touch the month before to remind your client. Need more advice? For more in-depth help and advice, contact Selby District Council’s senior business advisor, Heidi Green, at hgreen@selby.gov.uk or on 01757 292332.

Legal focus: Life Interest Trusts A Life Interest Trust is, in its simplest form, an arrangement that is used to preserve your assets for the next generation whilst also providing for someone in the present. Typically these are set up for instances such as a second marriage as this would enable you to provide for your new spouse on your death but ultimately pass your assets to your own children. The beneficiaries, is what is know as the life tenant of the trust and has a right to the asset in the trust for the duration of their life, as well as any income from the trust. Most commonly the main asset is a house, so a trust enables a surviving spouse to remain living in the property until their death, after which point the beneficiaries of your share of the property will be eligible for their share. According to The Office For National Statistics (ONS) it is estimated that around 42 per cent of marriages end in divorce. With those figures in mind, a Life Interest Trust is especially useful as it ensures that your children are protected in the event of your spouse remarrying. This is quite a common concern for clients as they are worried that the spouse from the second marriage may encourage the will to be changed and the beneficiaries altered. A life interest trust protects from such a situation arising. For further advice or support with this and any other matters, contact Heptonstalls on 0800 917 8267 or visit www.heptonstalls.co.uk. 25

The current government is committed to promoting the recruitment of older workers. Older workers are an important asset to any organisation due to their wealth of experience and diverse perspectives

No Desire To Retire? Then read on‌ If the over 50s continue to leave the workforce in line with previous patterns, the country will suffer serious labour and skills shortages. The obvious solution is to embrace later life working, helping to realise the potential of older workers who have so much to offer Here are a few facts to help to dispel negative stereotypes about older workers: MYTH: Older workers are likely to cost the business more for their experience. Research shows that workers aged 50+ are five times less likely to change jobs than their younger counterparts thus reducing recruitment and training costs. MYTH: Older workers are likely to be too set in their ways and will not be able to adapt to change or be flexible. There is no evidence to suggest that older workers are less adaptable or flexible. One 26

survey indicates that 85% of employers with older workers have said that their older workers are open to/adapt to change very well.

with ill health compared to younger workers.

MYTH: Older workers will just cruise along and will not be sufficiently focussed on their career.

A recent poll found that not only did mature professionals keep up with changing technologies, but 90% were internet users.

It is assumed that older workers lack the desire to learn but 91% of those surveyed stated that they would wish to progress in their career.

MYTH: Older workers are not going to be up-to-date with the latest technology.

For more information please contact your Job Centre on 0345 604 3719 or email goole.goolewc@dwp.gsi.gov.uk.

MYTH: Older workers have more sickness absence.

Age UK also offers support at - www.ageuk.org.uk/work-andlearning/looking-for-work/

According to the insurance firm RIAS, older workers are half as likely to take time off

SPORTSNEWS ATKINS ON THE PODIUM IN SEASON FINALE The Hel Performance Motostar British Championship Moto3 standard class drew to a close at the fantastic Brands Hatch GP circuit last month, Goole’s Charlie Atkins was on fine form as he secured fourth place in race one and a third in the second On the Wilson Racing Honda NSF 250R, Atkins made a positive start in free practice. In the first session he finished fourth with a best time of 1:38.975, then in the afternoon session he improved his lap time to 1:37.606 and moved up to third quickest in the standard class. In qualifying, the riders took to a dry track for the 20-minute qualifying session. Atkins was always in contention for a top slot throughout, but a small mistake meant that he would start fourth for the first race. In the first race of ten laps, Atkins was quickly up to third place in the standard class. Unfortunately, 34

Atkins was held up by a slower rider in the GP class. The GP rider was able to blast down the straight parts of the track but then held Atkins up through the corners. The two standard class rivals ahead of him were able to open a gap over the Wilson Racing rider. At the halfway point of the race, Atkins managed to overtake but he was almost six seconds behind the race leaders. He managed to reduce the gap and set the second quickest lap of the race. He was later overtaken by his team-mate in the closing laps and finished an excellent fourth. In the second race, a 12-lap event, after a good start Atkins found himself behind the same GP class rider as in race one. He again struggled to overtake but by the halfway stage he was finally

clear. Running third, Atkins came under pressure from fellow standard class rider, Jack Scott. He was coping with the pressure well, and on the penultimate lap, Scott managed to squeeze by Atkins as they crossed the finish line. Atkins was determined to finish the year on a high and dug deep, and coming out of the last corner he got really good drive to re-take third position by 0.063 seconds. Last year Atkins was eighth with 176 points, but he has now finished the 2017 season in fifth place overall for Wilson Racing, scoring 241 points and with three podium finishes. It’s too early to know his plans for the 2018 season other than he will

be one of just 22 riders selected to take part in the Dorna supported Moto3 British Talent Cup. Charlie said, “I’m really pleased to have got on the podium. Last year this circuit was really difficult for me but this season I’ve got it sorted. In both races I got stuck behind a rider from the GP class but in the second I got by and got third. I must thank my dad and Uncle Lee who bring me racing and Gary and Nikita of Wilson Racing for always giving me an excellent bike. Of course I need to also mention my sponsors because without them I can’t go racing, so thanks to Harman Carpets and Flooring, Repair and Restore Goole, The Snaith Arms and MustHaveMediaServices.com 35
