INTRODUCTION April has crept up on us really quickly we can’t believe we’re on to yet another new month already! We’ve made sure this issue of Our Goole is packed full of great community stories and local advertisers. Inside, one of the world’s leading contemporary composers Gavin Bryars is returning home to Goole for a very special concert at Junction. Also, get involved with a fun-filled fundraiser that will see some of the best local musicians get together to perform and help raise money for a little girl’s care. Elsewhere in this issue, we’re urging you to improve your physical and mental wellbeing
by joining a new walking group which has launched in the East Riding.
We wanted to fill you in on a local woman who is organising a fundraising night to raise money for Dementia UK, after her father passed away with the disease last February. You can find out all about the event inside. And, if you skip towards the back of the magazine, you can learn all about Jerry Green Dog Rescue based in Gilberdyke and three of their rescue dogs that are looking for a reader to give them a new forever home. So pull up a chair in the spring sunshine and get stuck in to our brand new issue! Enjoy the lighter evenings and we’ll see you next month!

Fun-filled fundraiser
for precious little Evie A HUGE EVENT, WHICH WILL SEE SOME OF THE BEST LOCAL MUSICIANS GET TOGETHER TO PERFORM AND RAISE MONEY FOR A LITTLE GIRL’S CARE, WILL TAKE PLACE THIS MONTH Each session costs £60 and the family are hoping to raise £600 in total. The event will take place on April 21 at 6.30pm at the Charter Club. Performing on the night are several acts, including a Justin Bieber tribute act, a local band called The Numbers, who will play music from different eras, Farewell Fairground, a three-piece band who regularly perform at local festivals and on P&O Ferries and The Alcatrax Swim Team, a duo who perform covers. There will also be a guest appearance from club promotor and DJ, Tom Zanetti, and K.O. Kane.
Evie May Johnson, who is now 20 months old, suffered brain damage at just nine weeks old, leaving her with life-changing injuries. Her mum, Abbie Avery, 20, from Swinefleet, is organising the event to help raise money for Evie to have private physiotherapy sessions. She told Our Goole: ‘It’s hard work looking after Evie as she’s very heavy and I have to carry her everywhere, but she’s my princess and always will be. We have an NHS physio that comes out to us and we have a dietitian involved as she has suffered from eating problems, too. She’s learning to sit at the moment and is getting better each time.
Tickets are available on the night or from Jelly Tots Nursery in Hook or Rock Fitness gym. Raffle tickets are £2 a strip and prizes include a weekend break, concert tickets for Lucy Spraggan, a photo shoot, a spa package, meals for two at local restaurants, football tickets, gift vouchers, butchers vouchers and much more. Entry is free but donations will be gratefully received. Abbie said: ‘Evie needs looking after 24/7 and she struggles with all kinds of things, which has a big impact on our family. I’m not asking for people to donate much but every penny adds up and will hopefully help Evie have physiotherapy.’ To donate online, visit the Just Giving page www.gofundme.com/evies-fundraising-page.
‘The sessions help Evie learn how to use her muscles. Her legs and arms get stiff so it’s important she moves them. The sessions help her posture and straightening her spine.’ Abbie added: ‘We applied to a charity called Pride of the Isle, which was fantastic. They donated some private physio sessions with Daniel Woods from PT Kids but we really want to be able to carry on with these sessions. The fundraising night is to raise money so that Evie can continue the sessions for a bit longer and hopefully get some mobility back.’ 7

Put a spring in your step this Now that spring is officially here and the days are getting longer, why not improve your physical and mental wellbeing and make new friends by joining a new walking group which has launched in the East Riding? The West Park Health Walk has been launched in Goole by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Sport, Play and Arts Service. The 30 minute walk starts and finishes at the West Park Cafe every other Wednesday. The group meets at 10.30am for a 10.45am start. The walk is part of the Walking for Health programme which is a national scheme, governed by Ramblers and Macmillan Cancer Support, which aims to help people get back on their feet, boost their health, or to discover the benefits of walking while making new friends. Councillor Richard Harrap, portfolio holder for adult and carer services, told us: ‘Walking for Health is a fantastic way for people to boost their health and wellbeing in a supported and friendly environment.’
Led by trained volunteer leaders, the fun and friendly walk, which will run every other week, is open to everyone but is particularly suited to those who do little or no exercise or are recovering from an illness or injury. The route mainly covers the park grounds on hard standing ground, but weather permitting walkers have the option of using the off-pavement section of the park. There is no need for specialist walking equipment, just a sturdy, comfortable pair of shoes. Tea and coffee will be available in the cafe after the walk and free parking is available in the car park. FROM A POLICE
Shed and garag Often, the security of gardens and the outbuildings in them are forgotten about while people focus on ensuring their homes are safe. This issue, Sgt David Lonsdale urges you to consider assessing how secure these parts of your home really are
“Do you need a better lock, an alarm, lighting, or even CCTV? We want to ensure all of your property is as secure as possible
10
Issue 015-April 2017
E PERSPECTIVE:
ge security By making a few modifications sheds and garages, along with the equipment stored in them, can be made more secure. So if you haven’t assessed your security for some time then we would urge you to look at your sheds, garages and outbuildings and see how secure they really are. Do you need a better lock, an alarm, lighting, or even CCTV? We want to ensure all of your property is as secure as possible. Below are some areas to consider:
Crimes in your area • Entry was gained into an unsecured property and items were stolen. • An unsecured mountain bike was stolen. • Entry was gained into a secured vehicle, which was searched but nothing was taken.
1. Make sure your shed or garage is secured with a good quality lock. Consider bolting a pad-bolt to your door with domed coach bolts and large penny washers and nuts with nylon inserts on the inside, instead of simple screws which can be easily prised through soft or rotten wood. Use two pad bolts spaced evenly for better security. Use large, good quality padlocks with hardened steel shanks.
• A vehicle was broken into in an attempt to steal it.
2. Use the same methods for fixing hinges as with the pad-bolts, if the hinges are small, use security screws which can’t be unscrewed.
•
3. Keep your back gates locked when not used. 4. Do you have security or motion sensor lights? They can be a great deterrent if your home or garden is secluded from street lighting. 5. Garden tools, DIY equipment and leisure items such as fishing and golf equipment should be locked away in storage cupboards within outbuildings to form a second line of defence to thieves. 6. Many shed or garage windows are never used. If this is the case – why not screw them shut? Fitting mesh or steel bars across the window from the inside allows light to enter but means the thief has to go to a lot of trouble to remove them. Replace broken glass with laminated glass. 7. Finally, when you’re out in your garden, ensure your house is secure to prevent “sneak in” burglars from taking advantage of an open door or window as opportunistic criminals are always on the lookout.
• A handbag and wallet were stolen in a sneak in burglary via an insecure rear patio door. Entry was gained into a secured house and various items as well as two vehicles were stolen (the cars were later recovered).
• A handbag was stolen in a sneak in burglary in Goole •
A secured house was broken into which resulted in a car been stolen (the car has since being recovered).
• A secured minibus was stolen from outside a property in Goole. • A transit van in Goole was stolen.

World-class composer returns home to Goole for exciting concert One of the world’s leading contemporary composers, Gavin Bryars, is returning to his home town of Goole for a very special concert at Junction Born and raised in Goole, the concert at Junction will be the first time that Gavin has ever performed in the town since he played bass in the local orchestra over 50 years ago, with his mother on cello and conducted by his uncle Will.
Adored by musical legends including Brian Eno, Tom Waits and Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood, Gavin will appear with the chamber version of his ensemble - two singers and four instrumentalists which he has run for over 30 years, performing widely throughout the world but rarely in the UK.
JD SHOT BLASTING Shotblasting is a highly effective process that uses compressed air to force abrasive material through a jet nozzle. Shotblasting is the term used for removing dirt, grease, rust and erosion from many types of metal using a 100% recyclable high powered blasting process. Before

The ensemble includes; soprano Peyee Chen, tenor Chris O’Gorman, Morgan Goff on viola, James Woodrow on electric and acoustic guitars, cellist Nick Cooper and Gavin Bryars on double bass. The inspiration for the Goole performance came from Gavin’s
Issue 015-April 2017 recent project with the poet Blake Morrison to create a sound installation on the Goole to Hull stopping train as part of the Yorkshire Festival in 2016. Reconnecting with the town, Bryars was keen to bring his ensemble to perform in the place where it all began. Charlie Studdy, Junction Arts & Leisure Manager told Our Goole: ‘Gavin’s name is probably better known around the international concert hall circuit than on the streets of his East Yorkshire home town. We’re delighted to be able to do something about that by hosting his first ever professional concert in Goole - it’s quite a coup for Junction.’ The event is on Friday, May 5 at 8pm. Tickets are priced at £20 and are available from the Box Office on 01405763652 or at www.junctiongoole.co.uk

REMEMBERING ROY A Goole woman is organising a fundraising night to raise money for Dementia UK, after her father passed away with the disease last February The ‘Heroes of the 80s’ event is being organised by Stacey Lee Winton to raise money for the charity, which she found to be a huge support to her when her father, Roy Hebden, died last year. Stacey told us: ‘My dad was only 64 when he passed away and had struggled with the usual, such as forgetting the names of people. His favourite thing to do was going round every café in Goole for a cup a tea; I don’t think he remembered he had been to them all. ‘His health deteriorated very quickly. He was walking on December 12 and by Boxing Day he was hospitalised after a fall and bang to the head. He was put on a dementia ward, where his memory and walking were both badly affected, which had a huge effect on the whole family. He had changed into a different person, which was really difficult to understand. He died on February 4 last year.’ She added: ‘Dementia UK was a big support to us as a family before he passed away and I wanted to give something back to them. In the local Goole area there isn’t enough support to help the families looking after a loved one with the illness so I want to highlight this and raise money for the brilliant charity. Last year we did a similar event in memory of my dad and raised £1,100 for Dementia UK.’ The Heroes of the 80s night will take place on May 13 at 7pm at the Charter Club, with DJ Gary Wood, a 70s and 80s music specialist, taking you back to the disco era. Fancy dress is optional. Raffle prizes would be gratefully received and raffle tickets will be available for £1 per strip, with all proceeds going directly to Dementia UK. Clan Shots Photography will be there to capture the evening, too. Tickets are £5 and are available from Stacey on 07762 924071 or at 10 Weatherill Street. For further information and event updates, search for ‘Heroes Of The 80s Charity Night For Dementia UK’ on Facebook. 22

This month we focus on Jerry Green Dog Rescue, based in Gilberdyke “We will always strive to make animal welfare our top priority, putting it at the heart of every decision we make” Jerry Green Dog Rescue has been rescuing unwanted and abandoned dogs ever since it was established in 1961. Jerry Green opened a centre in Broughton first and since then another four have been opened, one of those being the Gilberdyke centre which is now manned by passionate staff and dedicated volunteers.
ELIZABETH HEMPSTOCK, FUNDRAISING AND COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER FOR JERRY GREEN SAID: I love working at Jerry Green Dog Rescue because it is a charity that always puts dog welfare first and at the heart of every decision made. The best thing about working here is seeing the look on a new owner’s face when they come through the door on adoption day and the wagging tail of their new family member is waiting to greet them. It makes all the time we spend washing muddy paw prints out of our clothes worthwhile.
At Jerry Green Dog Rescue we will always strive to make animal welfare our top priority, putting it at the heart of every decision we make. Due to this we have pioneered a new approach to rehoming dogs that we call Meet and Match®. This system saw our charity move from open to closed kennels. We now invite people to come and meet our staff, so that we can learn all about you, your circumstances and match you to your perfect dog. We can then bring the dog to you in one of our relaxed Meet and Match rooms to spend some quality time together. In 2016, our Gilberdyke centre re-homed an astounding 187 dogs. Every year we get better at what we do so we’re hoping to make it to 200 by the end of this year. We need the support of our community to continue to do this amazing work. Jerry Green Dog Rescue doesn’t receive any lottery or government funding — we rely solely on donations from our supporters alone to keep rescuing these dogs. If you can volunteer for us and help us raise some much needed funds please contact me at elizabeth.hempstock@jerrygreendogs.org.uk

Can you offer us a loving, forever home? RITA Rita is a seven year old small Staffordshire Bull Terrier crossbreed. She is house trained and could live with children over eight years old. Mini Rita Roo, is a real sweetie. She’s very playful, loves going for walks and she absolutely loves her toys. She walks out nicely with other dogs from the centre but we feel she would prefer to be the only dog in a home, where she can be the centre of attention and get all the cuddles to herself! If you think Rita is the girl for you please get in touch.
TERRY Terry is a Saluki crossbreed who is approximately one year old. Terry is shy when he first meets you but once he starts to come out of his shell his legs are made of springs! He loves nothing better than running around, playing with his doggy friends or his toys. Terry walks nicely on his lead. We think he could live with children age 10+ due to his size and giddiness. Terry is looking for a home where he can enjoy a good run about, long walks and a comfy bed in which to chill afterwards. If you think Terry could be your perfect match please call us.

Graham is a three-year-old Patterdale Terrier who is house trained and could live with teenage children. He’s always keen to please and he loves to sit for treats. He simply adores human company and will happily sit on your knee for a cuddle. He loves to go for long walks and to play with his toys. He’s one fussy, affectionate little dog, looking for a family to cuddle up to.

Social media is more important than ever before so this month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green is on hand to make sure you get the most out of it.
Get social media savvy We all know that social media has revolutionised the way businesses engage with their current and prospective customers. However, it is not just used for sharing information anymore, in some cases customers use it as a first port of call if they have an issue or complaint. It is therefore more important than ever to monitor the activity on your platforms and that of your competitors. Always be polite if someone has raised an issue against
26
you, do not engage in an online argument but simply ask how they would prefer to be contacted so you can resolve the matter, once resolved it is safe to go back to the social media platform and say so. Social media monitoring can be a good way of seeing if unhappy customers are looking for new providers. You could start building up a good rapport by offering solutions to the problem they have experienced. However, do remember that out and out selling on social media is frowned upon. Put yourself in your customer’s shoes, what are they looking for? What do they find interesting? What problems do they want solving? Think about it more in terms of building up rapport with someone, being
Issue 015-April 2017 helpful, responding to questions and letting them get to know you. Once they get to like and trust you hopefully the sales will follow. Think about all your content, make sure it is engaging and tells a story. To make it even better add some images or a short video. Be generous and share other people’s information and they are more likely to share yours. However, as with all marketing, it costs in time and money. Make sure you test and measure the activity—is it doing what you want? Which platform works best for you? How much time are you spending and is it a good investment of your time? Remember, the idea is to raise awareness and let customers understand you have the right personality for them. So, go on, if you’ve never done social media before — give it a go. And if you already do it we hope this recap helps keep you focussed. Business Support York & North Yorkshire has been delivering quality support and training since 1986. If you want help with any aspect of your business get in touch on 01904 699590.
SARAH JOHNSON HEAD OF MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE AT HEPTONSTALLS
Medical Negligence and Making a Formal Complaint to the NHS Although it is not a pleasant subject, there are occasions when people are badly let down by the health service that we trust. Many victims of medical negligence may not feel able to complain about the treatment they have received or may even feel daunted by the prospect. However it is important to know that patients have the right to complain, to have their complaint investigated and to receive a full and prompt response to their complaint if they are not happy with the care or treatment they have received. Every NHS organisation will have a complaints procedure which can be requested. If your complaint is about an NHS hospital you can either make the complaint directly to the hospital or the organisation that the local commissioning group (LCG) trust with your care. If you need help with making a complaint about your medical care, you can seek help and advice from the Patient Advisory Liaison Service (PALS) available in most hospitals. Alternatively, you can seek advice from your local Citizen’s Advice Bureau or through the NHS Complaints Independent Advocacy Service through your local council on the gov. uk website. If you or someone you know feels they have been a victim of medical negligence contact Heptonstalls on 0800 917 8267 to find out what help is available to you. 27

Construction is literally building the future and shaping our landscape and is constantly moving forward with new technologies. Could it be the career for you?
Myth-busting the construction industry Construction is a varied industry that spans a range of activities from mining and forestry, to buildings and infrastructure. It is also involved in the manufacture and supply of products as well as maintenance; the list is endless. For this reason there are thousands of opportunities available within the industry which equates to 10% of total UK employment. Here are some myth-busting facts about construction:
MYTH: ‘There is a lack of training opportunities within the industry’ FACT:
To support young people in gaining experience and boost future employment, virtually all UK Contractors Group (UKCG) members provide annual, six monthly or summer vacation placements for undergraduates. Two thirds of UKCG members were sponsoring students through university in 2012.
There were almost 15,000 apprenticeship starts in construction last year - a 6% annual increase. The majority are at Levels 2 and 3, but the sector is now developing graduate level apprentice programmes.
MYTH: ‘Construction is a dangerous industry with a poor safety record’ FACT:
It is certainly true that construction sites are potentially risky places to work. However, UKCG members invest huge time and effort managing this risk to avoid accidents.
Members work together collectively on issues such as site induction, on training and ensuring that everybody on site is competent to carry out their job and to look out for the safety of others. Resultantly the accident rate on UKCG sites continues to go down year on year. MYTH: ‘It’s dominated by men’ FACT: There are already over 200,000 women in the industry. Traditionally, a male dominated industry, the world of contemporary construction embraces gender differences and encourages inclusive working practices. MYTH: ‘Construction is not an aspiring career and only offers low skilled work’ FACT: Construction professionals and craftspeople are in demand. Construction offers a range of rewarding employment opportunities from lawyers and architects, to onsite professions including electricians and carpenters. One sixth of construction employment is at executive and managerial level.

Issue 015-April 2017 3. Talk to people Speak to the existing owner of the house you intend to buy, as well as the neighbours. Ask them about the best things to do in the area and for information on local events. Recommendations for local services such as doctors and dentists are also important, as well as pubs and takeaways for that first night after a long moving day. 4. Prepare your pets If you have any pets, it would be worth taking a trip to your new area in advance so they can also get a sense of their new home. You could even arrange for them to be looked after for a while during the move, as this will minimise stress for you and them on moving day. 5. Service your car If you’re driving to your new location, it’s worth servicing your car beforehand to minimise any chance of a breakdown during your journey. Also stop regularly for breaks and speak to your removal company because they are governed by strict rules around the length of time drivers can travel for.

Business of the
month
Managing Director, Mike Smith, has been helping Cobus Communications lead the way in the communications industry for the past 25 years
Cobus is nationally recognised as a leading provider of business communications services, with an outstanding reputation for quality and expertise. Mike, can you explain about the services Cobus Communications offers? We offer an alternative solution for businesses for all their telephony needs. We have wholesale agreements with all the major network providers and negotiate the best deals for lines and calls to pass on huge savings – it’s as simple as switching your gas or electricity provider. We also provide a range of quality products and professional services including telephone systems, business mobiles, CCTV solutions, door access control, and cable infrastructure. Can you tell us about your journey to becoming MD at Cobus Communications? I started at Cobus over 25 years ago as a YTS (apprentice) installer and gradually worked my way up from there. I’m extremely proud of Cobus and what we have all achieved, especially since 2013 when I bought the company outright and became
32
sole shareholder. I refocused the business’s direction and reinforced its values and work ethic, providing a more efficient operation that we have built upon since. Do you have any interesting facts/stories about Cobus? Cobus were once asked to help Mohamed Al Fayed when his multimillion pound super yacht had telephony problems and wasn’t authorised to leave the port until communications had been restored. I received the call on my mobile early on a Saturday morning and arranged for an engineer and equipment to be flown out that evening. The engineer worked through the night to reinstate full operations and check that all systems were back operational. The yacht was cleared for sailing, the next morning - as scheduled, and I don’t believe Mohamed Al Fayed was any the wiser! A very discreet and efficient job well done.
What does the future hold for Cobus Communications? As the region’s leading provider of telephony and communication solutions the company’s main objective for the next two to three years is continued growth. Further investment and expansion into a wider area will also see Cobus and its brand become more of a national name and not just a regional one. Cobus has enjoyed an impressive 25 years but the future is looking even more impressive! Lastly, what are the main benefits you find to advertising in our magazines? Advertising in ‘Our Goole magazine’ meant that we could target a new audience and help businesses in Goole and the surrounding areas save money on their telephone lines and calls while also benefiting from our impressive communications portfolio.

SPORTSNEWS Equestrian excellence for local man and his stallion A local man is reaching new and exciting heights of success alongside his stallion, Billy King of the North
Nigel Lowe of Swinefleet took supreme in hand at the BSPA Festival of Showing and Winter Championships at Keysoe during the last weekend of March. He won his class, went on to claim ‘champion’ and then in the evening performance he took ‘overall’ in hand supreme of the show. Billy King of the North also went on to qualify under saddle for the Royal International Horse Show held
at Hickstead Arena, ridden by Megan Hewitt from Sheffield. Nigel and his partner Beverly Walsh bought Billy back in November 2016. Beverley told us: ‘This pony has never missed a beat. Billy has taken accolades such as Champion at Penrith Show 2016 and Overall Pony of the Year with NCPA 2016. I’m really proud of everything both Nigel and Billy have done - truly a combination to follow for the future.’

RUGBY SUCCESS FOR U13S Goole Academy U13 girls rugby team have recently had their first taste of competitive rugby - and what a success it was.
The East Yorkshire Girls School Rugby Final was held at Driffield last month with over 20 schools attending across all age grades. The Goole Academy team was led into their first taste of a school festival circuit by Danny Cooper. Phil King, the Goole Girls RUFC coach warmed the girls up and gave them a whistle stop training session on rugby skills before their first match began. The girls were split into groups of five and played four games each. In a statement on their website, Goole RUFC said: ‘From the very start, the girls played in great
spirit showing outstanding sportsmanship, not only to each other but towards every team they played. ‘Their behaviour and attitude throughout the afternoon was not only a credit to themselves but to Goole Academy. I look forward to a great partnership working with them in the future.’ To top off the afternoon, the girls had a chat and photo session with La Toya Mason — the England Women’s Rugby Union International Scrum-half, before heading back on the minibus in high spirits after the jam-packed day. 39
