The ceremony, which is celebrating its 10th year, honours the local business community with an award show taking place at Goole Academy on Friday 21st February Chairman of the organising committee, Garrey Haase, who first come up with the idea of launching the awards 10 years ago to celebrate the successes of businesses in the Goole and Howdenshire area, said: “We were hoping for a really high number of entries with it being the 10th anniversary of the awards and we were not disappointed. “Our independent panel of judges had a really tough time whittling down the entries to come up with their shortlist; we’ve even introduced an additional award category for the self-employed and micro businesses because we had so many strong entries from businesses fitting that

Tackling youth This month Sgt David Lonsdale talks to us about Goole Policing Team’s latest priorities and how they are working with Goole Youth Action to stop youths committing crimes
We work closely with Goole Youth Action and a number of local groups to support children and offer activities and increase opportunities for young people in the area.

E PERSPECTIVE:
crime in Goole Once again, we are seeing an increase in youths congregating within the precinct of Goole and areas around the main supermarkets of Morrisons, Tesco and Asda. The number of youths at any one time has been swelling beyond 50 which obviously causes issues as pack mentality sets in and children are then adopting emotional behaviours rather than thinking rationally. As a result, a number of youths are committing low level offences which will place them into the criminal justice system potentially ruining future opportunities. Parents could also face action if their child repeatedly gets into trouble or if they do not take reasonable steps to control their behaviour. We are issuing community protection notices/ fines, and court orders including sending parents on parenting programmes or placing them on parenting contracts. We also have the option of having a dispersal notice placed within areas of Goole to prevent groups attending certain areas. If individuals given notices return to the area within a
specified time they can be arrested and charged. We have done this previously after several warnings were given and if the current situation continues this will be a consideration. We do not want to place children into the criminal justice system and will also assist in supportive measures with parents. However ultimately parents needs to be aware of the whereabouts of children and take responsibility. We would like Goole to be a safe place and business within the day and night-time economy to thrive and grow. Incidents such as these damage the reputation of the area and I personally would like to ensure that does not happen. We work closely with Goole Youth Action and a number of local groups to support children and offer activities and increase opportunities for young people in the area. We will continue to do this and would ask that you let us know exactly what other provisions you would recommend. Goole Youth Action can be contacted via Facebook @GooleYouthAction.

Not your ordinar It’s only been a few months since co-owner Steph Goodhand took over The Tipsy Cow Trailer, but herself and Mel are blown away by the success so far! Steph told Our Goole: “We bought the Tipsy Cow Trailer in September 2019. I am a budding entrepreneur and when I saw the trailer for sale, I was filled with inspiration and instantly knew this wasn’t a chance to be missed. Page 14

Castaway Youth Theatre launches time capsule show A local youth theatre club in Goole are in the process of creating a time capsule show they hope that in 100 years’ time someone will discover Castaway Youth Theatre offers weekly drama workshops for children and young people (aged 8-18) with additional needs. With specialist support, sessions are a great opportunity to make friends, build confidence and have fun achieving truly great things. The youth activities ensure that young people have the opportunity to enjoy fun and meaningful experiences independently of their primary carers, thereby contributing to their social development and reducing social isolation. The sessions are run on Saturdays from 1pm3pm. The Youth Theatre has been working very hard since September 2019 devising an original live show made up of live performance and video to film and put into a time capsule.
The youth club will be performing the show live to family and friends on the 8th February and are burying the time capsule by the Castaway Anchor in Goole the following week. Elle Douglas, Project Leader, told Our Goole: “We wanted to capture what life is like for us now in the hope that in 100 years, someone will uncover our time capsule and learn about life today. Our members have combined their creative skills and minds to create an interesting show that captures what life is like for them in 2020. We hope future generations will find our time capsule.” Good luck to everyone at Castaway Youth Theatre with the performance and who knows, you maybe watching the show in 100 years’ time.

A Facebook group taking Howden by storm!
A group has been set up, through Facebook, where women can meet up, have a chat and make new friends. The group aims to be a place where women can discuss their ideas and thoughts on a variety of issues as well as regularly meet up to do something exciting Set up by Georgette Jarvis, the idea came from Georgette wanting to make friends after moving to Howden from the South of England. Our Goole chatted to Georgette to find out more about the group. She told us: “I found that when I first moved here I was meeting new people, but I wasn’t making friends with whom I could spend my Page 20
free time with. “So I put a post on the Facebook page ‘Howden Community Board’ and asked if any other like-minded women would be interested in going out and making new friends. I expected a few replies but was amazed as more and more ladies joined in.” This was when ‘Howden Ladies’ was formed, and since
its launch on January 11th, the group has 178 members and is still growing. Georgette added: “It just goes to show how many women are out there who would love to make new friends and build a community spirit. We have a diverse selection of women from all walks of life, but we all have something in common in that we all feel a little lonely and isolated sometimes.

“We may not all be into the same things, but someone will share your passions and interests and be able to offer support and mutual friendship. “So, if you would like to branch out and try something new - be it for chats, friendly support, cake, crafts, advice, coffee and cake, exercise, singing, days out and cake join the group.” The Facebook group is used to swap ideas and reach out to people with various other issues. Events such as walks, cinema trips and drinks are organised through the group with the

Georgette added: “I hope that the group will give us a chance to make changes to our lives and feel more like we are part of the community, improve our mental health and empower each other.

“Recently the ladies met up at the Masonic Hall on Selby Road, Howden, just three days after the group was formed and the turnout was great”.

Open Doors aims to inspire more people to get into the construction industry by letting them go ‘behind the scenes’ to discover the diverse and rewarding range of career paths the industry has to offer, as well as changing people’s perceptions of construction. How do I find out more about a career in construction? If you’re interested in a career in construction more information on different roles, qualifications and a range of case studies can be found on the construction careers website Go Construct. When will Open Doors take place? The next Open Doors event will take place from Monday 16 Saturday 21 March 2020 which you can book now. How do I book my site visit? You will need to log in to your account to book which will be created when you make your first booking. You can use the same account to book others. What will happen during my site visit? You will get the opportunity to see a project, office, or factory, and meet the people who work in the industry. And, of course, if you have any specific requests or interests please mention them when booking. Can you tell me about access for visitors with disabilities? The information page for each individual site will clearly state disability access. Can large groups attend? We encourage groups of all sizes, however, due to some site restrictions larger groups may not always be possible. Please check the individual site’s
information page for further information. And the earlier you book, the easier it will be to accommodate you. How long will the site visit last? An estimated duration can be found on the site’s page, but this will vary from site to site. Can I attend more than one site? Yes absolutely! Just remember you will need to book each one. Do I need to wear anything special? We would recommend you wear sensible shoes and clothing as you will be walking around the site. Bring some waterproof clothing just in case! Health and safety clothing will be provided by the construction company. Open Doors is open to 11-18 year-olds, educators, careers advisors, adults, career changers, parents and guardians.
