It only feels like yesterday when it all began, but here we are celebrating Our Goole turning seven this month. We are super excited to have got this far and cannot wait for many more years. Considering what has happened over the past three years, we are so proud that Our Goole is still here and thriving, and that is all thanks to our lovely customers who continue to support us - whether that’s through advertising in the magazine or sharing a great local news story to entertain our readers. So much has happened in those seven years, and we have achieved a great deal. We will continue to take pride in helping the community the best we can.

Whether that is promoting businesses or finding feel-

good stories, we help shine a light on all the fantastic people and charities we have here in Goole.

We chatted to director, Lisa Warrener, to find out more about running Our Goole and what her proudest moments are.

“It is a huge achievement to be celebrating Our Goole’s seventh birthday. The last few years has been extremely difficult for so many of us and as a small business we faced many challenges and struggles. However, we got through it and our business is busier than ever! We pride ourselves on being able to help all those small businesses like us, so to still be here promoting the local businesses and acknowledging Goole’s fantastic community spirit, it really has been brilliant and that is all down to our

“Over the past seven years, Our Goole has become a household name in and around the town. People come to us for so many things and we are the first port of call for so many people. Our Goole vows to do its very best to help each member of our community in whatever way we can.”

Since the magazine was relaunched in 2016, Our Goole has run a number of successful toy appeals which has meant over 2,000 gifts have been delivered to disadvantaged families.

Our Goole has also sponsored local football teams, donated to many local charities such as The Green Team, The Moorlands Community Centre, Youth Space - Goole, and many more.

In the past seven years, Our Goole has also won ‘Contribution to the Community (Business)’ at the Goole & Howdenshire Business Excellence Awards 2019 and was then nominated for the same award and

‘Small Business of the Year’ the following year and 2021. This year we scooped New Marketing Agency of the Year by Corporate LiveWire Global Awards 2022/2023 and Best Small Family-Run Marketing Business in the UK by M&A Today Global Awards 2023.

Lisa went on to say: “To be recognised for these awards just proves that all the hard work is worth it and we are creating something special.”

This month, Goole Policing Team talks to us about the dangers of the online world and what the force is implementing to make sure criminals can still be found digitally

From browsing the internet, to accessing social media, banking and shopping online, it is fair to say our world has gone digital.

Public expectations of how they interact with policing are changing. The public now expect us to have a significant online presence, with a similar level of functionality and ease of use to other services they access on a daily basis.

While many advances in technology have huge benefits on how people communicate and transact, digital or ‘cyber’ crimes have increased significantly in recent years. In addition, the volume of digital evidence will only continue to increase.

Policing has to adapt and respond to the digital environment, to ensure it can relentlessly pursue criminals, protect the vulnerable, and reduce crime, wherever that occurs. Here are just a few of the topics that will help ensure the policing team keep on top of the digital world.

The Policing Vision 2025

The Policing Vision 2025 will set out how digital policing will:

• Make it easier for the police and public to communicate with each other

• Improve digital investigations and intelligence

• Transfer all information with the Criminal Justice System (CJS) digitally Digital Policing Portfolio (DPP)

The DPP is a national delivery organisation that will support the evolution of policing, enabling forces to respond and adapt to the increasingly digital world we live in. It is responsible for delivering the Policing Vision 2025 by developing nationally consistent services and capabilities enabled by technology. The solutions developed will enable forces to meet the changing demands of the public, more effectively prevent and investigate crime and better handle digital evidence.

Digital Intelligence and Investigation (DII)

Enabling policing to protect the public through preventing and detecting crime in a society that is becoming increasingly digital:

• Improving the knowledge and skills of frontline officers and staff to address digital crime

• Ensuring the specialist capability to respond to cyber-crime

• Building and maintaining capabilities in the fast moving digital environment

Goole Museum launches new exhibition celebrating the past

The town and port of Goole was established in 1826 by the Aire & Calder Navigation Company, an enterprise which connected the industrial and coal-mining regions of the West Riding to the Humber Estuary. The growth of the coal and general cargo trades continued well into the nineteenth century, and the images contained within the

album capture a remarkable era of development and prosperity within the country’s most inland port town.

Several of the photos show navvies digging out Goole’s later docks during the 1880s, including Aldam and Stanhope Docks. Another rare and remarkable photo captures Victorian dock workers bagging

grain on the deck of a vessel and on the quayside.

Our Goole had a chat with Alex Ombler, a curator at Goole Museum, to find out more about the exhibition.

Alex said: “An album containing a unique collection of Victorian and Edwardian photographs of Goole has

recently been donated to Goole museum. The images show scenes at a time when the town was experiencing rapid development and its population was growing.

“They capture new docks and locks as they were being dug, the town’s people at work and play, and snapshots of iconic buildings in the surrounding area like Carlton Towers, Howden Minster, Snaith Church, Ousefleet Hall, and Wressle Castle.

“The album was owned by Goole man, Bill Roland. Bill

had trained as a medic during the Second World War and after the conflict worked in a hospital at Naburn near York. During his time there, Bill was given the album by one of the hospital’s patients, who was also from Goole. Bill kept the album for years and it was of particular interest to his niece’s Husband, Iann Butler. When he passed away in 2010, Bill left the album to Iian, who wished for it to be kept at the museum for the enjoyment and benefit of the people of the town and future generations.

As the album is very fragile, the

museum’s staff have created a handling copy for visitors to come in and view, and travel back to a time when Goole was a very different place.

The museum is planning on creating a full exhibition based on these images, and artefacts associated with them, in 2023. So, stay posted for what is sure to be a fantastic journey into Goole’s history.”

Usually, they will promise cash in hand work or alcohol, drugs, and accommodation which usually turn out to be false. They will then use different methods to prevent someone from escaping or reporting to the police. You are at a higher risk if you are offered work in hand car washes, agriculture work, factory work and/or construction. If you are being forced to engage in criminal or sexual activity, this is

also exploitation.

Think you might be being exploited?

• Speak to a key/support worker or someone from a recognised/ registered homeless charity.

• Call the police on 101 (request to speak to the modern slavery unit) or report anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

• If you prefer, report your concerns to the independent and confidential, charity-run 24-hour Modern Slavery Helpline on 08000 121 700. The helpline is available in over 200 languages.

• Always call 999 if you or someone you know is in immediate danger.

How to spot an exploiter:

• Someone that you always see hanging around outside day centres/night shelters with a van and/or large car.

• Someone that you have not seen on the streets before and who does not want to talk to support workers/volunteers.

• Someone that has a smartphone but no other obvious belongings.

• Strangers that are seen talking to people outside day centres/ night shelters and then showing them to a van or car.

• Someone offering you work or other things, but then arranges an alternative meeting place to pick you up, which is away from your current location.

Suspect an exploiter?

• NEVER approach or engage with them.

• Write down any car/van licence number plates and a description of what they look like.

• Speak to a key/support worker or someone from a recognised/ registered homeless charity.

• Call the police on 101 (ask to speak to the modern slavery unit) or call 999 in an emergency. Call the 24/7 Modern Slavery Helpline on 08000 121 700 if you have concerns about exploitation.

is with a heavy heart that Snaith Community Sports Hall is now closed. This was a great venue for the area and offered so much to the local community. Sports, games, events and a safe place. Due to financial difficulties and these ever trying times the centre closed in late December after a vote following a community meeting. Our Goole would like to pass our condolences on to the management team who worked so hard for the centre, we loved working with you and wish you all the best for the future.
