INTRODUCTION Hello and welcome to your July edition of Our Goole! This month, the schools will mark another end of a school year and get ready for the summer holidays. We hope our readers have some brilliant plans to spend time with their family, whether it be jetting off to somewhere or staying local and visiting one of the many attractions we have here in the UK. In this edition we have a chat to Laura Maw, who is organising a fundraising event for her son Grayson who had a seizure just eight days after he was born in November 2021. The event will be raising money for the L52 Neuroscience

ward at Leeds General Infirmary. We also showcase Goole Museum who are looking for volunteers to take part in an oral history project to document working life on Goole’s docks. Through sharing your memories with the museum, the community will help create a new exhibition at the Museum. Our amazing front cover image was taken by the very talented Jackie Halliday. As always if you would like more information about how you or your business can be featured in the magazine, get in touch with a member of our friendly team who will be happy to help. We will see you again in August!

Goole Museum launche Goole Museum is looking for volunteers to take part in an oral history project to document working life on Goole’s docks. Through sharing your memories with the museum, the community will help create a new exhibition at the Museum We had a chat with Alex Ombler, Curator at the Museum, to find out more about the exhibition and how people can get involved. How did the idea come about? My background as a historian is in Maritime history and when I became curator of Goole Museum in January, I realised that we didn’t have any documented memories of life on and around Goole’s docks. Page 6

There aren’t many people left who worked on the docks in the 50’s and 60s when the port was real hive of activity, so one of my first projects was to record interviews with people and try and capture what everyday life was like when the docks where booming. What does the project focus on? The project focusses on the everyday working lives of people who worked on the docks including dockers, shipyard workers, shipping clerks, seamen - anyone who

had a connection with the docks. It also focusses on the lives of the women and children who lived and grew up around the docks. When will be project be ready to view? We’re aiming for these memories to form the basis of a new exhibition called ‘On the waterfront’ which will hopefully be ready in January. We will also make these memories accessible to the public on our new digital interactive table, which will be delivered in about 4 weeks.

es Goole docks project We’ve already had some fantastic stories including a seaman from Goole who sailed around the World when he was a teenager, a docker who described how hard life on the docks could be, but he also talked about the sense of camaraderie amongst the dock workers. We also spoke to a shipwright who gave a sense of the bustle and industry of the shipyard. Another person has donated hours of film which they recorded on the docks showing how a modern port operates. If you’re visiting with children there’s plenty to do alongside exhibitions to make your visit fun and interesting. Enjoy interactive exhibits about living and working in Goole, diving, and docks. Under 5s can play with sea themed activities or borrow

Explorer resources to make fascinating discoveries around the exhibition spaces. Spot ‘5 Things’ activities to do and collect a sticker. Every year, the museum also has the temporary gallery space shows for new exhibitions. The volunteer team research and create a new

exhibition linked to the social history of Goole, and there is an annual Open Art. The space is also used for local artists to display their work, or for local groups and individuals to showcase collections. For more information, please visit East Riding Museums on Facebook.

FROM A POLICE Top tips from ou This month, Goole policing team gives some advice to our readers about how they can keep their belongings safe and remind us of some important rules

Parking a motorbike in a public area should always be a last resort - but if you have to then consider checking the car park. Some of the safest car parks are those which have been awarded the ‘Park Mark Safer Parking Tick’. To find a Park Mark site near you, visit www.parkmark.co.uk

E PERSPECTIVE: ur policing team Is your bike at risk of theft or damage? Protect your bike from thieves - Always lock it with the fork & ignition lock - Always remove the keys and keep keys at a safe distance away from your front/back door. - Use a secondary, quality disk or chain lock - Lock & anchor your bike with a quality insurance grade chain Parking a motorbike in a public area should always be a last resort - but if you have to then consider this: Some of the safest car parks are those which have been awarded the ‘Park Mark Safer Parking Tick’. To find a Park Mark site near you, visit www. parkmark.co.uk See anyone acting suspicious near to a motorbike? Call 101, only call 999 if there is a crime in progress. Tips to prevent lock snapping There has recently been a notable increase in burglaries where entry has been gained to the victim’s house by a method known as ‘lock snapping’ This method involves the lock cylinder being snapped by various means, which then allows the outer part to be removed and access can be gained to the internal locking system of the door.

The door can then be unlocked and entry can be gained. This whole process can be completed very quickly with little or no noise, but there are steps you can take to reduce the risk that you will become a victim of this type of offence. 1) Ensure that the cylinder on your doors are fitted correctly. The cylinder should not extend out away from the door. 2) Fit a TS007 3 star cylinder. A 3 star cylinder has been designed and tested to withstand an attack for a longer time period. 3) Look for a sold secure mark or a 3 star kite mark. These will show that the cylinder has been tested to a high standard. 4) Fit additional security measures to your doors such as a ‘patlock’ for patio doors or Sash jammers. 5) If you have any concerns in relation to your locks, contact a locksmith from the Master Locksmiths Association (MLA) for advice. Details can be found on www.locksmiths.co.uk Electric Scooters Can we just remind parents that it is currently illegal to ride an electric scooter anywhere except for private property with the land owner’s permission. These scooters are prohibited on the public highway, pedestrianized areas and cycle tracks.

Town Centre Anchors Three of the Town Deal renewal projects central to the town centre are the Market Hall, Victoria Pleasure Ground (VPG) and the Leisure Centre All are considered key anchor points that have an important role to play in drawing people into the town. The aim is for Goole Market Hall to become a thriving multi use cultural venue inclusive of eateries and flexible events space, it requires commitment and ambition to deliver and drive investment into the arts and culture sector. VPG improvements aim to bring the ground up to a standard Goole can be proud of and increase user numbers both for sports participation, visiting spectators and new events. The Leisure Centre was scheduled for a refresh by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, by boosting the budget available, the Town Deal contribution is ‘buying added value’ by expanding the leisure and recreational offer to include activities such as a bowling and tag active, responding to what the early surveys told the Town Deal should be considered.

all due to be completed during 2022. Although time consuming, thorough Business Cases are vital to identify and resolve delivery challenges and reduce the risks of failure for a project. Exhibitions and publicity will take place to ensure the community and stakeholders can comment on the finer details of each project. The Town Deal Board hope to see projects starting to be delivered later in 2022 with completion by March 2026. Grayson Maw Fundraisin On 31st July, Grayson Maw Fundraising Fun Day will take place at Goole Town Cricket Club to raise money for the L52 Neuroscience ward at Leeds General Infirmary. The ward has patients from newborn up to 16 years old for any neurological health problems For Laura Maw and her family, the team from LGI were a huge help for her son Grayson after he had a seizure just eight days after he was born in November 2021. Our Goole spoke to Laura to find out more about the fundraiser and a background into Grayson’s life. Laura said: “At nine days old, Grayson had a massive seizure and stopped breathing. I had to perform CPR until the ambulance arrived and took us to DRI, upon arrival he went into another big seizure and they told us if they didn’t put him on a ventilator his body would get too tired, he was put on life support and transferred to Leeds Children’s hospital, where he was then diagnosed with the deadliest form of meningitis (ecoli meningitis), cerebral Page 16

abcesses, hydrocephalus, ventriculitis and pro longed seizures. He spent seven weeks in hospital and underwent eight lots of brain surgery! He had four different EVDs (external ventricular drains) until the meningitis was under control. He was on two lots of antibiotics, an antiviral drug and an antiepileptic drug. “We spent Christmas in hospital away from my other two children and husband. On the 1st January, Grayson had his VP shunt fitted to help the hydrocephalus and he will have this forever. Grayson fought so hard with the help of the team he was under, if it wasn’t for the team I dread to think of the outcome! They saved our sons life and gave us the most amazing support whilst we went through every parent’s worst

ng Fun Day! nightmare! “We don’t have a set goal in mind, but £2000 would be absolutely amazing! People can donate through a go fund me, buying raffle tickets, or putting money in the collection bucket that will be there on the day. “I’m looking forward to the community of Goole and surrounding areas coming together to help us raise money for such an amazing cause, seeing all the children happy and in their element. “I know how every single penny would help the ward in different ways, and of course for people to see Grayson thriving like he is now after everything he’s been through.” On the day there will be small fair rides, children’s swings, trampolines, hook a duck, football games from Footballerz LTD as well as refreshment stalls and live music from The Outcovers and singers Harvey Powell and Archie Penrose. Property expert David Leake of Housesetc talks about how there are a range of DIY jobs you can do to help add value to your property; as well as doing those little jobs that will help you to prepare for valuations and photographs

Get your property ready By starting your home moving prep now, you will be fully prepared to get the ball moving, when it comes to making your move. Tidy the Garden The garden is a huge selling point for most properties on the market. With the warmer weather arriving, now is the perfect time to get into your garden to complete quick and simple jobs to make your property more sellable and aesthetically pleasing in photos. Simply mowing your lawn and trimming your hedges makes a huge difference for when our valuer pops round to take photos.

DIY jobs Indoors On the occasional rainy day, you can get inside and finish jobs that you haven’t got around to yet. Maybe you have those leftover tiles, or that roll of carpet waiting to be laid. This could be the perfect time to tackle these jobs. Deep Cleaning Nothing helps get a property market-ready better than a thorough deep clean. Work through each room to get the property as sparkling as possible. In the bathroom, don’t forget to go round the edges of the taps and the bath to remove any gunk, and buff and shine the taps to make them look really impressive.

Rambling for all Goole & District Rambling Club takes place usually on the first Sunday of the month where they enjoy a full day out Goole & District Rambling Club sets off by coach around 7.30am8am and returns anytime from 5pm-7.30pm, including stopping for breakfast and a lunch stop. The next ramble will be on Sunday 7th August to Helmsley. The club’s founding member, Jack Harman, told us that the club officially came into existence in 1965 when it became affiliated to The Ramblers Association. Prior to this it appears to have been an informal group when Goole YMCA and Goole Wheelers organised an outing to Malham in 1957. The next year they went to Ingleton and then it evolved into a monthly ramble and they continue with this model today. For more details email Goole.ramblers@gmail.com
