Nominate your NHS heroes
Goole Hospital needs your nominations for the Patient’s Choice Award. Help us to celebrate the efforts of the amazing NHS staff by putting them forward for consideration
Each year the awards recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements of NHS staff with an evening of celebration called ‘Our Stars’. It’s been a while since they’ve been able to do this, due to the pandemic, but we’re delighted they are bringing the event back for 2023.
They’re seeking nominations from patients and their loved ones to celebrate the achievements
of dedicated and compassionate NHS staff. They work across hospitals in Scunthorpe, Grimsby and Goole, and community services in North Lincolnshire, which includes district nurses, podiatrists and the community dental team.
If you’ve had a good experience and want to thank an individual staff member or even a whole team of professionals, then nominate them for the Patient’s Choice Award 2023.
Please mention Our Goole when calling advertisers
The winner will be revealed on November 24 at the Trust’s annual staff awards event, Our Stars 2023.
Twelve awards will be presented on the night to staff, volunteers and charity fundraisers, but the most coveted award on the night is the one chosen by patients and the public.
Trust Chairman Sean Lyons said: “Our staff continue to go above and beyond, time and time again, to provide exceptional care for our patients. What better way to say thank you than nominating them for this prestigious award.
“Whether it was someone clinical who provided you with compassionate care or another vital member of our team who contributed to making your experience a positive one, we want to hear from you.”
If you have been a patient or visitor at Goole Hospital or at one of the Trust’s community health services, you can nominate a staff member, clinical or non-clinical, in one of the following ways:
• Fill in the nomination form online: https://forms.office. com/r/URgN847dut
• Direct message the Trust on social media (Northern
Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust on Facebook, @NHSNLaG on Twitter)
• Email nlg-tr.comms@nhs.net
• Call 03033 302528
Please ensure you provide your name, contact number, the name of the staff member you are nominating, the area they work in and the reason for the nomination.
Nominations will be accepted up until Friday 28 June. Patients and the public can also nominate staff for the Health Tree Charity Champion Award and the Volunteer of the Year Award.
The winner of the Patient’s Choice award, and 11 other awards, will be revealed at the Our Stars 2023 event at the Baths Hall in Scunthorpe on Friday November 24.

Safeguarding domestic abuse
This month, Goole Policing Team talks to us about how domestic abuse remains an absolute priority for the force, and to further support and safeguard victims, Humberside Police has teamed up with the Domestic Abuse Alliance to roll out the free WEPROTECT app, which accelerates access to civil legal assistance and protection for victims of domestic abuse
“This crucial tool will allow our officers to offer instant access to civil legal support and protection to those who need it most – it is vitally important that those suffering from abuse get the right help and support from the right people, alongside the work we’re doing already to protect the most vulnerable and their families.”
POLICE PERSPECTIVE:
abuse victims across the Humber
WEPROTECT is an instant victim referral app, which has already been rolled out by police forces and specialist support service providers in Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Cumbria, Sussex and Bedfordshire. It was accessible to all of Humberside’s frontline officers across the force from 22nd May.
Detective Sergeant Rebecca Holmes from the Safeguarding Governance Unit said: “We’re delighted to be the next force to roll out the free WEPROTECT app to our frontline officers to allow us to safeguard hundreds more victims of domestic abuse.
“This crucial tool will allow our officers to offer instant access to civil legal support and protection to those who need it most – it is vitally important that those suffering from abuse get the right help and support from the right people, alongside the work we’re doing already to protect the most vulnerable and their families.
“The service will be available for all domestic abuse victims and is a welcomed additional level of safeguarding. The DA Alliance enhances and strengthens the work already
being done by the Safeguarding Governance Unit, the newly formed Domestic Abuse Safeguarding and Investigation Team’s (DASIT) and our existing DA partners in supporting those subjected to domestic abuse.
“Once a referral is made, the victim will be given a dedicated domestic abuse advisor who, working alongside any criminal proceedings, will be able to put safeguarding measures in place including civil injunctions such as non-molestation orders and occupation orders as well as offering legal advice.
“Our message to every domestic abuse victim is the same – we know how hard it can be to come forward, but when you are ready, we want you to be reassured that we take all cases of domestic abuse extremely seriously.
“If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse call 999 if you are in immediate danger. Alternatively, you can also call our non-emergency number 101.”
Local butcher win lifetime achievement award
This year’s winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award is known throughout the whole of Yorkshire and beyond for his larger-than-life character, his generosity of spirit and a life-long expertise in his particular field. Sometimes literally...
For this year’s winner is just as comfortable addressing the crowds from the middle of a muddy Yorkshire field on a cold and blustery day as he is holding court in the family business where his warm – and often very loud – greeting has become legendary among customers: “Now then, what do you know?”
Yes, Howden butcher Philip Parkin has become something of a local celebrity with his cheerful personality, award-winning You Tube videos and, of course, his far-reaching knowledge of livestock, for which he is in big demand at country shows and auctions across the county. Back in 2020, Our Goole had the pleasure of interviewing Phillip and getting to know a little more about the business he runs. At the time the world was faced with the Covid pandemic but Philip made it his mission to continue to serve the local community and ‘in the long run to continue what we do best, serving local meat to the best of our ability and promoting the high street butcher’s.’
Philip was born in Barmby-on-the-Marsh where he went to the village school. He was, according
to his father Roy, a ‘quite’ well behaved child. When he was 12, his family moved to Market Place in Howden, where they lived above the family butcher’s shop. The property, with its distinct tiled frontage, was originally a tallow chandler’s shop and was later occupied by the Parkins’ predecessor, butcher Frank Moore. During the 1930s Depression Mrs Moore ran a soup kitchen from the premises – a sense of community support which the Parkins have continued to this day.
Nineteen years ago, when his parents, Roy and Sylvia, were gently persuaded to retire, Philip took over the Howden business - although to this
day he relies on them to help out with occasional trips, shifts in the butcher’s shop and errands he and his partner Marie just can’t find time for. It is truly a family business, with his brother David running his own butcher shops in Crowle and Epworth.
Philip is also something of a TV star, renowned for his weekly YouTube videos which are filmed on his partner Marie’s mobile phone every Friday morning and sometimes on Thursday evening when the shop has just closed, with Marie as producer, director and prompter.
Several have gone viral, with one that touched a nerve over Brexit garnering hundreds of
thousands of views. But Philip remains firmly on the fence, saying: “I thought I was a simple old butcher in Howden chopping up meat. We’re not doing anything different to what we did 20 years ago, it’s just that now we’ve a bigger audience.”
Now some of his younger customers come in and say “It’s him off telly!”, but fame hasn’t gone to Philip’s head. His passion remains for his hometown of Howden and his position behind the butcher’s block that he has occupied for over 40 years. There’s nothing gives him greater pleasure than calling out his cheery greeting to passers-by and welcoming customers into his shop.
Property expert David Leake of Housesetc talks to us about why staging your home is super important and how it can totally impact the price your property can get
Stage your home and seal the deal
So you’re thinking of putting your home up for sale. Well, let me let you in on a little secret! – staging your property can make a world of difference. Seriously, it can be the secret ingredient that attracts buyers and seals the deal.
1. Making It Look Fab
By giving your place a little makeover, you create a warm and inviting atmosphere that catches everyone’s eye. Ditch the family photos, declutter like a pro, and arrange things just right to showcase the best features of your
creating flow, and letting that good energy flow freely. With some strategic moves, you can transform cramped rooms into airy havens.
3. Selling a Lifestyle
Staging allows you to set the scene and show off all the awesome things your home has to offer. You want buyers to feel those good vibes and imagine themselves living their best lives in your place.
4.Boosting that Value
Staging helps divert attention from small flaws and instead highlights the overall appeal and potential of your home. It’s a savvy investment that can pay off big time by attracting more interested buyers and potentially fetching higher offers.

This month, Jobcentre Goole tells us how deciding what you want to do as a career, or considering a change of career, can sometimes be hard. But spending some time doing work experience, with an employer in a particular sector you might be interested in, can be a useful place to start
Have you thought about work experience?
Work experience can take the form of volunteering in a local organisation or on a community project. It can also mean you spending some of your free time with an employer, who can provide you with a valuable introduction to the skills and qualities required in a specific line of work. Employers understand the importance of work experience and have stated that the top three skills they look for in a candidate are confidence, communication and teamwork. Work experience can be a great way to improve yourself in all these areas.
Here are some top tips from employers on how you can find and obtain work experience:
1. Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you – go and get them! Over half of employers offer work experience but
many don’t advertise their places. Be proactive!
2. Apply yourself – employers don’t want to be approached by your mum or dad, they want to hear directly from you. Picking up the phone or sending an email asking for information about their work experience placements goes a long way.
3. Do your homework! - Take time to find out what the employer you’ve chosen to approach for your work experience does. For example, do they build things and if so what? Explain why you want to do work experience in their company – it’s a great way to show you’re enthusiastic and motivated.
4. Be open-minded – when you begin your work experience and throughout, remember to try new tasks, meet new people and muck in. Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you’re not sure
or something is unclear. For an employer this can be a sign of maturity.
5. Work experience doesn’t end when you leave the building – ask for feedback when you have completed your placement to identify areas for improvement. Make sure you add your work experience to your CV including the tasks you performed and the skills you gained. Lastly, don’t forget to ask the person that looked after you for a reference.
For anyone claiming Universal Credit, Jobseeker’s Allowance or Employment and Support Allowance, please speak to your local jobcentre Work Coach for advice prior to taking up any work experience.
