Clean Goole Campaign Group organises clean-up project in memory of Captain Tom Back in September 2020 Graham Toft and Rebecca Watkins set up the Clean Goole Campaign Group after seeing lots of criticism about litter in the area The group has recently organised a clear-up project named Captain Tom 100 Bag Challenge. The aim was to fill 100 bin bags with litter and get as many people in the community to take part.
The event wanted to embody the spirit and determination of captain Tom who inspired and helped us all through those difficult months. Captain Tom proved that anyone could take on a challenge and make a difference.
The event was a huge success just like Captain Tom’s 100 laps of his garden. Angela Wilson comments on how “It was wonderful to see so many people getting together to celebrate Captain Tom’s fundraising spirit as well as giving something back to the community.” Old Goole Community centre also thought a litter pick would be a good idea so Clean Goole Campaign Group volunteered to run one for them Sunday 16th May. Regular volunteers from the Clean Goole Campaign Group were also joined by some of the members

of the Old Goole Community Group. Goole’s newly elected Mayor, Chris Bailey, has also been a volunteer of the group for quite a while and has now joined the admin team. The group has gone from strength to strength with lots of new members and volunteers getting involved, and when new admin member Angela Wilson set up a Go Fund Me Page in March to get some donations to buy the group some high-vis vests, the amount of donations received was more than they ever expected.
The group wants to run litter picks in the Goole area on a regular basis on weekends and also during the week. Now they want more volunteers to get involved and give a few hours up every now and again to join them. It’s a great way for the brain to switch off and relax and some members have said they find it rewarding and therapeutic. They advertise the litter picks on social media. The Steam Packet and Old Goole Club have also supported the group by providing refreshments following recent litter picks
as well as donations from Morrisons of bags, gloves and Easter eggs for the younger volunteers that were on the litter pick on Easter Saturday. Angela added: “It’s great to see the community coming together with one aim and that is to make our town and the surrounding area a clean and tidy place for its residents, businesses and its visitors.” If you would like more information on how you can get involved in the clean-up events, visit Clean Goole’s Campaign Group on Facebook

ity Safety Volunteer The Community Safety Volunteer scheme encourages those living and working in the area to use their skills, experience and knowledge to assist and support Police Officers, Police Community Support Officers, Special Constables, support staff and the fire service in their daily business. The Community Safety Volunteer scheme was first established in April 2008 to promote community involvement in policing through volunteering. A dedicated team of volunteers from a variety of backgrounds already work across the Humberside force area, making a positive contribution to the area’s communities and using their wide range of experiences to enhance the work of the police and fire service. What could I achieve through becoming a Police Volunteer? • Enhance your CV • Get involved in local community events • Meet new people and make new friends • Make a real difference to policing in your area What do volunteers assist with? The tasks performed by our volunteers vary widely, but will never replace roles held by paid staff. Among the areas within Humberside Police and Humberside Fire and Rescue volunteers may be used for:

Administrative support Diversity and community engagement Recruitment event assistance Helping to give crime prevention and fire safety advice • Playing roles in training exercises What qualifications do I need? You do not need any formal qualifications; we will match skills and abilities to available roles. How old do I have to be to apply? You can apply to be a volunteer once you are 16 and have left secondary education. Will I receive expenses? You can claim expenses for travelling to and from your placement. The force will reimburse you for other expenses incurred whilst volunteering, provided it was relevant. Are there any residency rules? You will need to have lived in the UK for more than three years and over to be eligible to apply Application process Applicants meeting the above requirements will be invited for interview and, if successful, will then undergo vetting and health checks. References from two people known to the applicant for at least two years will also be required.

...Our Goole chats to the new town M Our Goole congratulates Chris Bailey who has been elected as the new Mayor of Goole Our Goole had a chat with Chris Bailey to find out more about what his plans are and what he hopes to bring to the role. How does it feel to be elected Mayor of Goole? It is a great honour to be elected as Mayor of Goole. I would like to thank everyone who voted me on to the council, as well as the members of Goole Town Council who have entrusted me with the role. What do you love most about Goole? What I love the most about Goole is its people. There is a fantastic underlying community spirit here where, in times of need and trouble, everyone pulls together. I work closely with Hannah Patton, the vicar at the Parish church, who also has a passion for the local community. I came here 17 years ago and only planned to stay for three months until my job was done but I fell in love with the area, its community spirit and the people. The rest, as they say, is history. What are your plans for the role In September, I plan to visit all the schools in Goole. This is to talk to the children about the many opportunities that are available in Goole, what facilities are already here and what the plans are for the town’s future. I feel it is important to involve children in all projects and plans as they are the next generation who will take the town of Goole to greater heights. I also want to raise awareness of Goole to the whole of Yorkshire and show off its potential as a thriving hub of opportunity. Page 14
What do you hope to bring to the role? I would like to bring and enhance a sense of pride to the community. Sometimes we forget what beauty lies on our doorstep. I volunteer with a local group of litter pickers where we target different areas that need attention. This is to make both the area more desirable and to raise awareness of the consequences of littering. We have a vast array of green space in Goole - we should use it and appreciate it. It is only two years ago that I first went for a walk around Oakhill. I didn’t realise that such a place of beauty existed here in Goole! We have many parks for the public to enjoy that will be going to be improved with plans that are already in the pipeline. What’s one thing you hope to change in Goole? I would like to change people’s perspective of Goole. Long gone is the stigma of ‘Sleepy Hollow’. We have new industries, companies and a new prosperity to look forward to that will be happening in the near future. This town is going to be very much ‘on the map’. With lots of new investment comes lots of jobs. These next few years are going to be very exciting for Goole, all of which should be complete just in time to celebrate the towns bi-centenary year (2026). I’m just glad that I have been given the opportunity to be a part of it. Again, I would like to say thank you to everyone. A huge congratulations to Chris and we cannot wait to see him making a difference!
