E PERSPECTIVE: Scams come in many guises, so it can be all too easy to fall victim to fraud. Fraudsters often contact thousands of random people in the hope that a few will be tricked into giving away their cash, bank details or other personal information. Here are some tips to help you avoid being a victim of a scam: • Remember that the bank is always the safest place to keep your money • Never keep large amounts of cash at home and keep what you do have hidden away • If someone asks for money or personal information, or encourages you to let a complete stranger into your home, stop and think ‘is this a con?’ • If someone you don’t know visits, calls, emails or sends a letter asking for your details, take your time and consider whether it’s genuine • If you’re in doubt over something, seek a second opinion from someone you trust • Remember that the police, banks and other trustworthy institutions will never ask you to provide your account numbers or PIN codes – or send them money for ‘safe keeping’ • Regularly check your bank statements and report anything suspicious to your bank in branch or using a phone number that you know is genuine
• If you’ve already been a victim of fraud, be aware of scammers targeting you again – they could pretend to be a lawyer or police officer who can help recover your money Golden Rule: If it sounds too good to be true, it generally is. Speak to Action Fraud if you’re concerned about any recent contact you’ve received. Covid-19 Vaccine Text Scam Alert We have been alerted to a highly believable scam which starts with a text and advises the user that they are eligible to apply for the vaccine and to click on the link in the text message. The user is then led to a webpage, which looks very convincing and asks them to complete some details, in order for them to be able to apply for the vaccine. The details asked for: Name, address, date of birth, proof of address and card payment details With the recent approval of multiple vaccines in the UK, these types of scam attempts are likely to continue, as fraudsters continue to take advantage of the rollout to so many people. Local friends crea help those in need When lockdown was first announced, friends Jessica McMaster and Melissa Wood decided to set up a raffle page as a non-profit charity to raise money for charities and families in need. Since then, “‘GOSH’ it’s good to win” has raised over £10,000 for Great Ormond Street Hospital Our Goole had a chat with Jessica to find out more about what inspired the pair to set up the page and how another two lockdowns have affected their fundraising. Jessica told Our Goole: “We first started the raffle page during the first lockdown around the end May. Due to being placed on furlough, we Page 14

There are things for all ages. We are also looking at ways to incorporate other local businesses, trades and other community projects but we’re not too sure how we’re going to go about this yet. “Our original goal was £700 throughout the first lockdown. Since then we have smashed the £700 target and, to date, we have raised £12,500 for GOSH, £500 to
Children In Need and £1,500 for over 20 hampers and 10 gift cards. More recently, we have donated five laptops for those families struggling with home learning. “We are still coming up with new ways and ideas to help benefit people in our community who are struggling and in need of some help. In this third lockdown, we know many parents are struggling with homeschooling and with this becoming a problem for more and more families, we have decided this month all money raised will be used to buy laptops which will then kindly
be donated to local families. “As for a plan for the future, I wouldn’t say we haven’t set out a specific plan of what our next steps would be, but we are already hoping to expand the things we do for our local community and keep growing. This month, Jobcentre Goole talks to us about the online learning sessions available with the Prince’s Trust
Prince’s Trust Online Sessions
Here at Jobcentre Goole, we work closely with the Prince’s Trust regularly and this is one of their online support sessions for anyone up to the age of 30 These sessions are held weekly and anyone interested can refer themselves and get involved. If you’re on unemployment benefits you can continue to receive these while on the programme. However, it’s really important that you tell the Trust before you start the programme so we can let you know how it works. Alternatively, you can speak to your Jobcentre Plus Adviser. Whether you’re working with young people day to day or are a family friend, if you know someone who needs a boost to develop their confidence and skills, we can work with you to ensure they get the support they need.
Working with delivery partners across the UK, the Trust offer hundreds of free courses, grants and mentoring opportunities to inspire young people to build their confidence and start a career. They will be there to support them to achieve their full potential. The Prince’s Trust believes all young people can achieve their potential with the right opportunities. It offers a wide range of programmes and options and will work with a young person to find the right support for them. During this challenging time, the Trust is committed to delivering you the one-to-one support, advice and guidance you need so you can continue to develop your confidence.
The ‘Employability’ session runs on a Tuesday and includes topics such as: employability skills, CV building, interview techniques and communication skills. The ‘Wellbeing’ session runs on a Thursday where participants can develop understanding of resilience, confidence, relationships and money management. The sessions are held weekly on Microsoft Teams led by Sonya, Saher and Nick. This is a great chance to learn new skills, meet new people and answer any questions you may have regarding employability or wellbeing.
