The Scunthorpe Little Theatre Club celebrates its 75th anniversary

Founded in 1949, its first production was written by

Mrs Margaret Plowright, a one-act play called ‘Bright Is The Waning Moon’, performed at the Scunthorpe Musical Festival in May 1951 which won best production in the Open Class

The Scunthorpe Little Theatre Club now performs three shows per season, one of which is a pantomime.

Their first show this season is ‘Abigail’s Party’, directed by Sue Twilley and written by Mike Leigh which is running between 25th-28th September 2024 at The Plowright Theatre, Scunthorpe.

Their second show this season is their pantomime ‘Aladdin’, directed by Romy Smithson, which is running between 8th11th January 2025.

The Scunthorpe Little Theatre Club’s first pantomime was also Aladdin in 1966, and to coincide they thought it was the perfect choice to run an updated version in celebration.

Their third show this season is yet to be decided. This will run in Spring 2025 with more information to follow at a later date.

As part of its anniversary celebrations, they have made the decision to reduce their ticket prices to £7.50.

The Club also offer a membership scheme for £35 per season which includes the following for each of their three shows:

• 2 tickets.

• A complimentary programme.

• Your name to appear in the front of the show programmes for as long as you remain a member.

Once you set foot inside the auditorium at The Plowright Theatre and witness one of their shows their hope is that you will discover a real love for live theatre, and who knows, you

might even decide to sign up with the club.

The Scunthorpe Little Theatre Club is attending The Normanby Hall Country Fayre on Monday 26th August 2024 , so why not pop over, and say hello? They are even hoping to have some of their members in costume.

Matt Smith, the interim Chair of the Club, along with the trustees are determined to look back at the wonderful memories made as well as looking to the future.

The club is focused on encouraging new members to experience live theatre, increasing memberships and most importantly maintaining a solid future for the next generation of amateur drama actors, directors, prompts, backstage crew, costume designers, sound technicians, lighting technicians and for all the people that make the magic of live threatre happen.

In their own words: ‘This will be our legacy’.

Scunthorpe Journal would like to say a massive congratulations on your anniversary and good luck for this season.

FROM A POLICE

Lifting the police tape Investigating and tackling serious and organised crime

“The work they do within the communities to assist those battling addiction contributes to making a real difference. Helping people to escape this lifestyle and protecting those at risk is absolutely vital.”

POLICE PERSPECTIVE:

This month, Scunthorpe Police Team talks to us about how tackling Serious and Organised Crime remains a priority within Humberside, with their specialist unit dismantling some of our region’s largest drug empires and bringing down criminals who bring harm to our communities

Whilst hunting down serious offenders and employing an intelligence-led approach, the unit has been responsible for some of the force’s fantastic results and outcomes, tackling drug dealers, violent crime and any other type of serious offending in our communities.

Made up of some of our most specialist detectives, whilst the team force down doors to catch prolific offenders, you may not be aware of some of the intricate work that goes on behind the scenes, playing a crucial role in making communities of Humberside safer and stronger.

Our work to tackle these gangs doesn’t stop after we catch dealers selling dangerous substances and put them behind bars. We also focus on gathering intelligence, dismantling and disrupting the illicit organisations responsible for directing the runners on the street.

We are solving cases and catching drug dealers - it takes a whole system approach to tackle these gangs and our approach is working.

The Serious and Organised Crime Unit is made up of a number of specialist areas, including our Roads Crime and Drugs Expert Witness Teams, as well as our divisional areas who work around the clock to tackle county lines drugs across the force.

You may be thinking where does this money seized by our asset recovery teams go? Once processed as evidence, this will go straight back into fighting crime and protecting

our communities, making them safer and stronger.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Swaby, Head of our Serious and Organised Crime Unit said: “Criminals involved in gangs and drug dealing will often use violence and intimidation as tools to further their financial gain and control in our communities.

“They will also exploit young people and vulnerable adults, manipulating people to bend them to their will, causing them to distance themselves from the misery and true reality of drug dealing on the streets.

“They have no regard for the lives of those purchasing the substances they supply within the community. This is a business for them, with making money being the only objective no matter the expense or misery of others.

“This will often be in the form of gangs taking over a drug user’s home, to use as a base for selling and preparing drugs. This is known as cuckooing.

“However, the damage caused by drugs cannot be achieved by enforcement alone and needs to reach further afield to those at risk of being used by gangs.

“Work has been continuing with our partners to support the vulnerable people using drugs, as well as providing reassurance and wrap around care to our communities.

“The work they do within the communities to assist those battling addiction contributes to making a real difference. Helping people to escape this lifestyle and protecting those at risk is absolutely vital.”

Local woman organising Charity Ball

The Charity Ball will be held on Saturday 28th September at The Forest Pines Hotel & Golf Resort in support of The Children’s Hospital Charity and Lindsey Lodge Hospice

In 2017, Ella was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) aged just nine.

The incredible support she and her family received from The Children’s Hospital Charity, PACT (Parents Association of Children with Tumours and Leukaemia), and CLIC Sargent made a world of difference.

Their support was incredibly valuable during a challenging period in the family’s life, and their kindness provided much-needed assistance during tough times. Motivated by the compassion and generosity they received, Clare, Ella’s mother, felt profoundly thankful and was inspired to act. She decided to organise charity events as a way to give back to those organisations that had made

such a significant difference, ensuring that other families can also benefit from the same level of care and assistance they have experienced.

Clare told Scunthorpe Journal: “This year’s Charity Ball marks the sixth charity event we have organised; over the years, we have successfully raised more than £15,000 to support these charities. The event will take place on Saturday, 28th September 2024, from 6:30 pm onward at the Forest Pines Spa & Golf Resort, supporting The Children’s Hospital Charity and Lindsey Lodge Hospice”.

The evening will include a twocourse meal with vegetarian and gluten-free options, along with tea and coffee. There will be live entertainment, a disco, casino tables, a professional

photographer, a photo booth, a silent auction, a raffle, and various games.

Tickets are priced at £55 per person, and a £20 non-refundable deposit will secure your seat. Tables seat 10 people.

Clare plans to continue organising charity events, especially for The Children’s Hospital Charity based in Sheffield, which essentially saved her daughter’s life.

Clare told Scunthorpe Journal: “I’ll forever owe them a debt of gratitude.”

If you would like to support Clare and these fantastic charities, you can purchase tickets by contacting 07882 439031 or email ClareL.Dicken@outlook.com
