‘Exhilarating’ tandem skydive raises funds for Lindsey Lodge
A local man from Scunthorpe has taken part in a tandem skydive to raise money for Lindsey Lodge Hospice Max Marshall, a shop supervisor at the hospice’s Laneham Street store in Scunthorpe, has worked with Lindsey Lodge for a just over a year and was keen to raise money for the charity through a skydive which took place in June. The Laneham Street store is recognised for its good charitable work, however, it comes with high running costs, something which Max vowed to help out with. Following his tandem skydive, Max donated all funds (£600) to Lindsey Lodge after overseeing the tireless efforts of the charity’s staff. The Scunthorpe Journal caught up with Max to see what the motivation was ahead of the dive. “Being a shop supervisor at the Hospice’s retail store on Laneham Street, I have seen so many examples of the good and honest work our staff do every single day, providing care for those with life-limiting illness. “I am doing the tandem skydive in order to raise funds for the hospice as we are always in need of local support.” The skydive took place from nearly 15,000 feet above ground level, with Max admitting he was both nervous and excited before the big day. Following the jump, Max spoke to us about the feeling when he first jumped out of the plane. “From my point of view, the skydive was exhilarating! It was genuinely awesome to be that high up and see everything below. I was obviously scared about it but at the same time excited. The point where we had reached 15,000 feet and the plane levelled off, I thought that is it, I am up here
and I’m actually going to be jumping out!” Although Max’s donations will not directly benefit or improve the store, the figure he has raised will go to the hospice for them to use as they wish. Given his experience working in the shop, Max regularly sees the caring nature of staff, and was keen to give something in return to his colleagues. “All the money raised is in aid of Lindsey Lodge Hospice. The shop won’t directly benefit, I just wanted to do it for them because I see first-hand the quality and caring nature of the work that all the staff do. I thought if I could do my bit to help out then I would be happy. I have raised about £600 to date with more expected to be coming in, which is a huge amount for the hospice as it costs £4.50 a minute to run.” Finally, Max spoke about the vital work of the charity and how important it is to the town, thanking the kind donations of locals. “The hospice provides a much-needed service to the people of North Lincolnshire and would not be able to run without the generosity of the local people.” From everyone at the Scunthorpe Journal, well done to Max!

FROM A POLICE Bogus callers, rogue traders and doorstep crime “I would appeal to everyone with elderly or vulnerable relatives to take five minutes today and share our advice.

August/September 2019 - Issue 15
E PERSPECTIVE: This month’s column provides readers with some valuable advice on how to tackle bogus callers, rogue traders and doorstep crime These are often perpetrated against elderly and more vulnerable people hence Scunthorpe police wanting to make readers aware of the following: We understand that bogus callers and rogue traders can often be hard to spot, and this form of crime is well thought-out to trick victims as best as possible. Many now find it difficult to know who to trust and who not to trust, whether that be face to face or over the phone. Some criminals prefer to work face to face when committing a crime, so be alert when someone knocks on your door - they may be a distraction burglary or rogue trader. A distraction burglar is someone who gains access to your property by distracting or tricking you before stealing items from your home. The Scunthorpe Urban Policing Team says to readers: “Doorstep crime isn’t common, but it can have a long-lasting impact on victims’ lives. “We are urging people not to let unknown callers into their home without first viewing appropriate identification or checking with the organisation they claim to be representing.
“I also strongly encourage people not to agree to pay people for work before getting further quotes from other workmen and ensuring that the work being proposed is actually required. “If in doubt speak to a trusted friend or family member who can help you assess if the work is required and if the callers are genuine. “I would also appeal to everyone with elderly or vulnerable relatives to take five minutes today and share our advice. By sparing this time you could help keep your loved ones safe and protect them from this sort of crime. We do our best to share the word on what is best to do to tackle this type of crime, so we hope you can pass the information on as far as possible. “If you have concerns about this type of crime there is some really useful advice on our website (www.humberside.police.uk) to help you keep yourself, your property and your loved ones safe. “Anyone with information about doorstep crime is asked to call our non-emergency 101 line or independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

MESSINGHAM ZOO AIMING TO GIVE VISITORS A UNIQUE ANIMAL EXPERIENCE
Based just outside of Scunthorpe, Messingham Zoo has quickly grown into a popular destination for animal lovers looking for ‘something different’ Entering its second year in business, the zoo prioritises giving visitors the chance to interact with small animals, rather than viewing from a distance. The venue is attracting keen customers from across the region. After years of dreaming and planning, in 2018 running a zoo became a reality for owners Alex and Iain Gouldthorp, in what has been an exciting journey to this point. We caught up with Iain to speak about how they aim to be different from other zoos and wildlife parks. “We opened Messingham Zoo in February last year after many years of dreaming and three years of planning and building. We are a bit different and more hands on because we think it is important,
Page 12
especially for children, to be able to interact with some of the animals, rather than just seeing them in the distance.” As well as giving visitors the opportunity to get close to the animals, there is also a large focus on educating people who come through the doors. “The reactions we get are amazing as people love getting close to or stroking some of the animals. Our keepers are all from animal backgrounds and are always there to tell the customers about each animal’s own story because of many of them are rescued from poor conditions or donated by people who were no longer able to care for them. “By educating customers how to look after these animals, we can prevent this happening again.”

Northern Lincolnshire The 18th edition of the Northern Lincolnshire Business Awards once again lived up to expectations, celebrating the success stories of a number of local businesses The popular event, organised by the Northern Lincolnshire Office of the Hull & Humber Chamber of Commerce, proved to be a great success with plenty of newly crowned winners. The evening was hosted by Helen Fospero and Richard Askam, culminating with the Awards Dinner and Gala Presentation Evening. The Baths Hall in Scunthorpe was tented out for the evening to resemble a Big Top, helping guests immerse themselves into the theme of The Greatest Showman. Stephen Ellerington, the technical manager at The Baths Hall, treated guests to a spectacular musical light show to get the evening off to a great start. After a superb four-course dinner designed and served by the Hall, guests enjoyed the Chamber’s
Page 14
version of “The Greatest Showman” featuring West End performers as well as students from Grimsby Institute. Students from North Lindsey College joined Grimsby students and povided live music during the drinks reception. Of course, the highlight of the evening was the presentation of the 2019 Business Awards. It was a good year with evidence of plenty of business growth and talent on the south bank of the Humber. There were 14 awards presented on the evening. Of particular note were The Forrester Boyd Business of the Year won by FEL Group and the JemBuild Lifetime Achievement Award given to Tim Strawson of Bradbury Group. Thanks go to all the sponsors and supporters of the evening, particularly Phillips 66, who were the headline sponsor. Thanks also go to Savilles for sponsorship of the event’s AV requirements and the tech team at The Baths Hall.

MERCER WOOD COMMUNITY GROUP PICKS UP PRESTIGIOUS LOCAL AWARD Mercer Wood Community Group won the Orsted Community Award and the Overall Award at the Lincolnshire Environment Awards event, which was held at Lincoln’s Bentley Hotel on Thursday 6th June. The evening demonstrated how important our natural heritage is and how we can all play a part in its protection and recovery. Mercer Wood, measuring 3.34 hectares, is located between the River Trent and Ropery Road in Gainsborough and had become overgrown and uncared for. Decades of fly-tipping made the wood unattractive and unsafe for local families, something which the Mercer Wood group were keen to put an end to. In 2010, local residents formed the Mercer Wood Community Group with the vision to manage the area, benefitting both the environment and those who lived nearby.
Page 18
Alongside volunteers from the Adult Learning Group and The Conservation Volunteers, they spent several years removing tons of domestic rubbish, old furniture, car parts, tyres and even a burnt-out caravan. Following their awards and good work, Chairman of the group Gill Bardsley said: “We were just overwhelmed at winning both awards, it is a wonderful boost for us. It was so reassuring to realise that there is already a wider understanding of the need to nurture urban green space and its wildlife, both for biodiversity and the climate emergency, as well as human health and wellbeing. “We had always thought if we could clean up the land, it would encourage people to use the space and make it a much better area for the residents.”

This edition’s Kip McGrath column talks us through the value of reading for young children, and how they can help with your child’s reading speed
Reading the key to success! In a modern world we are surrounded by text, from emails, reports, WhatsApp, posters, leaflets, magazines and books. What is the value of reading and what happens if you can’t read?
Nearly every job, profession, apprenticeship or course in the UK requires a minimum of a GCSE Level 4 (a C grade). Without this, students will struggle. I even had to send my husband into the loft to retrieve my GCSE Maths and English certificates when I recently commenced a Masters Degree Programme. Whilst previous generations had the option of more practical apprenticeships this is no longer an option. Reading is a complex skill which requires the brain to recognise and analyse text very quickly. Did you know that a beginner reader reads at 55 wpm (words per minute), a developing reader (by
Page 20
Year 5) 115wpm and a competent reader 200-250 wpm. You can check your child’s reading speed online or count the number of words read, divide by number of seconds and multiply by 60. Reading speed can be affected by vision or hearing. If reading speed is poor, comprehension will also be poor. We have several programmes to help children improve their reading speed. Perhaps you have a child or teenager who can read but chooses not to? Try reading the same book and discussing it. Lovereadingforkids.co.uk allows you to download a chapter of a book before you buy. Or why not visit a book shop. Look for new authors. There is a significant link between students who read and those who master the complexities of reading. If you do need a professional to direct you please do call us on 01724 375945

Scunthorpe Town Cricket Club u15s crowned champions of Lincolnshire
Scunthorpe Town Cricket Club u15s have been named county champions after beating Bracebridge Heath in a closely contested final in July The u15s won the cup for the first time since 2006 in what was a great team effort from start to finish. Following an impressive league campaign, the group went into the final in high spirits and were praised for having a ‘special attitude and togetherness’. Speaking to the club, they told us: “We could not be any prouder, it was a performance worthy of champions. Posting 102 in tricky batting conditions against a tough opposition was a fantastic effort. Savraj Nijjar held the innings together making a vital 43no, with Ben Conroy, Thomas Giles, Ben and Dan Crew and Luke Ellis all chipping in.”

“It really was an exceptional effort by everyone involved. To become champions of Lincolnshire is amazing and it is what this group deserve. “Their attitude, their togetherness, how they go about their cricket, how hard they work as a team - it’s a special group and we hope this is just the start. “Also a big well done to Bracebridge Heath, who kept coming at us and were in the game all the way to the end, another very good young team with a bright future. Finally, a big thank you to all the players, who have done themselves, the club and their parents extremely proud.”
