We took a look at the local hospice and the excellent work it does for our community For over 26 years, Lindsey Lodge Hospice has provided high-quality, specialist palliative care to thousands of patients and families living with life-limiting illnesses. Therefore, there aren’t many people who haven’t been touched by Lindsey Lodge or know someone who has.

Page 8

Karen Griffiths, Chief Executive, says: “I feel extremely privileged to be leading our services with our staff and volunteers as we move it forwards into its next chapter. “It’s vitally important we continue to develop and expand our services to ensure we continue to deliver our high standards of care, both now and

in the future. We want to ensure patients, families and carers get the help and support they both require and deserve in a way that’s tailored to their needs. “We’re delighted to have recently launched our new Wellbeing Centre, which aims to increase access to clinical, therapy and spiritual support, enhancing wellbeing and quality of life for

even more local people living with life-limiting conditions, as well as extending the services available to their families and carers.” The independent charity provide services free of charge, to people from the North Lincolnshire and East Riding area. With less than 20% of the annual running costs provided by NHS grants, the charity hugely benefits from donations and is extremely thankful to the community for its continued support. The facilities at the hospice include a 24-hour care, 10-bed inpatient unit with a family lounge, ensuite rooms and a family kitchen. The five-day care unit has a patient lounge where they can enjoy art, crafts

and socialising, along with a sunny conservatory and therapy rooms. Karen adds: “Our wonderful team of doctors, nurses and therapists really do go the extra mile to ensure our patients and their families receive the best possible individualised care and support they need at what is a very difficult time for them.”

Karen Andrew, a senior nurse at the hospice, says: “I’ve worked at Lindsey Lodge for nearly 20 years, and I can honestly say that I still love my job and find it extremely rewarding. “We meet some wonderful people here, and get some lovely feedback about what we do. Some families still come back to visit us years after they’ve lost their loved one, which is testament to the very special Lindsey Lodge brand of care and support we provide, an our fantastic team who does their best every day to deliver it.” With 134 employed staff and over 400 volunteers there are plenty of people to ensure the best possible care to patients and families.

Made In Dagenham is coming to Scunthorpe! A group for performers of dance, drama and musical theatre present one main musical a year at the Plowright Theatre in March. This year, from Tuesday 5th to Saturday 9th March, Scunthorpe’s Musical Theatre Society brings you the hit show Made in Dagenham Based on the movie, it’s 1968 and the Ford auto factory in Dagenham is one of the largest private employers in Britain. Rita O’Grady discovers women are paid an appalling fraction of the men’s wages for the same work across the board. Refusing to put up with it any longer, Rita leads a strike for equal pay. A grinding labour and political struggle follows

that will ultimately advance the cause of women’s rights around the world. The society was formed in 1909, previously known as Scunthorpe Amateur operatic society, and are well known for the quality of our productions. For more information on how to get tickets, visit https://www.scunthorpetheatres.co.uk/whatson/made-in-dagenham-scunthorpe-musicaltheatre-society/

Community come together with help for June June Rhoades, 73, struggles to walk following a car accident a year ago. Since then, June has been unable to bathe or even leave the house, due to carers not being allowed to lift her On 4th January 2019, ITV News featured June in despair about her living situation and told how little help she could receive from social care workers because of their rules. June told ITV News: “I’m now a prisoner in my own home. Nobody is willing to help me.” This sparked outrage in the Scunthorpe community, with people in the area wanting to help June in any way possible. Local businesses have stepped up to help her get the facilities she needs to regain her dignity and be able to enjoy life again. Scunthorpe Journal spoke to Matthew Krebs, who has helped June get the support she needs. Matthew said: “It broke my heart when I saw June on TV. I offered to build her a ramp at my company’s cost. Since then a few of my friends have agreed to help out. My company Valley Carpets and Sam Herron’s Speedway Garage are covering the costs of materials.

Page 12

“Tom Eccersley from Scunthorpe Building Solutions is building it free of charge. Jodie Bourton from Hair by Jodie is doing her hair and giving her a spruce up. Carl Smith from Drive Doctor is jet-washing all her walkways and Steve Fawcett from Bespoke Blinds is fitting her some electric curtains. I’m amazed by the generosity of my friends and what they are doing to change June’s life.” Lee Jagger, Group Sales Manager at Eden Mobility, told us: “We were heartbroken when we heard June’s story and we just wanted to help in any way we possibly could. Eden Mobility are in the business of helping people and to see how happy June is with her new powerchair makes it all worthwhile.” It’s great to see the people of Scunthorpe coming together to help those in need and change lives. How can my child prepare effectively for their upcoming exams? With thousands of students across the UK preparing for upcoming exams, whether it be SATs, GCSEs, A-levels or end-of-year tests, exams are a huge part of a student’s educational journey

To achieve any goal in life, from running a marathon, planning a holiday, buying a house or changing jobs, preparation is always the key to success.

Five key steps to successful revision:

Many students are often unaware of how to prepare properly for their exams, therefore not always achieving what they are capable of.

2. Use mock exams and past papers (available online) to identify gaps in knowledge and learning.

With an ever-growing pressure on students to do well, it is common for young people studying for their exams to struggle with mental health issues. The word ‘revision’ means to ‘see it again’, suggesting that the student has encountered this information previously. If the topic has not been taught or understood, don’t be afraid to seek help from your teacher, that’s what they are there for.

Page 18

- Plan revision and leisure time carefully. Always study when you can work and concentrate most effectively.

3. Identify the way/s in which you learn best (visual, auditory) and look for revision strategies which allow you to remember the content the most easily. 4. Revising with a friend can help motivation (if you focus on the task in hand.) 5. Reward yourself regularly. Should you need further support with effective study skills, please call Tutoring Scunthorpe on 01724 853935 or visit our website www. tutoringscunthorpe.co.uk

American Football returns to Scunthorpe

Its been 20 years since Scunthorpe Steelers folded and the town has not had a squad since. Until now...

The sport will now return to the area as the brand new Scunthorpe Alphas will begin their first season this year! Mikey Gray, Sports Director, says: “The idea for the team had actually been coined a couple of years ago but it really only starting coming to fruition recently. “Scunthorpe has always had a underlying passion for American Football since the Steelers graced the field at Quibell Park in the 80s and 90s. We are over the moon to be bringing the sport back to the park for the first time in well over 20 years.” The Alphas will be joining the BAFA National League playing their first games at the start of the this year. Mikey adds: “We’ve got a very talented bunch of coaches with experience at the highest level

and we’ve managed to acquire roughly 10-15 experienced players. We are on the look out for new players to join us whether they’re a seasoned veteran or a complete newcomer. “The beauty of this sport is anyone can play it, so whether you’re a rugby prop, a basketball point guard or a 100 metre sprinter, this is the sport for you.” The team has recieved nothing but positivity from the community, even managing to secure a main sponsor, a sports therapist and a snap reporter! So if you have been waiting 20 years or fancy a new hobby, check out the Scunthorpe Alphas! Follow them on Facebook @AlphasFootballUK.
