Local duo organisi memory of friend James Smith and Michael Trueman are organising a charity Ball taking place at The Baths Hall on Saturday 23rd March to raise money for the Prevention of Young Suicide charity The black tie and ballgown event will consist of a drinks reception, thee-course meal, raffle, auction, live band performances as well as 400 guests including local representatives from prominent charities, clubs, societies and businesses.
of really fond memories from those early years at secondary school. Leo was a very special person and thought of very fondly by many people who will be attending the ball.
Michael and James, both local lads who met at Caistor Grammer School. Michael is now a doctor based in Newcastle and James is a pupil barrister based in London.
“We are actively looking for sponsorship and seeking support from local businesses who will be credited with collaboration in making our event a success. We have a growing list of fantastic businesses sponsoring us already which we would like to say a massive thank you to. We are also looking for raffle prizes and auction items for raising money on the night itself.
Scunthorpe Journal, caught up with Michael and he told us: “This is my first time organising a Charity ball or event, I’m really hoping for it to be a positive night filled with good dancing and fun with friends, and, of course, raising awareness and money for a very special cause. “I met Leo in year 7 at Caistor Grammer School. We were best friends during that time and I have a lot

“The event is a dual dedication - we lost my university friend, Oliver, to suicide this year too.
“The entertainment we have organised comes from Flat Moon and The UpTones. Flat Moon features one of my friends, Matty, who was also one of Leo’s closest friends at school, with the ball titled ‘Can’t

Stand Me Now’ after the song by the Libertines. Pete Doherty was one of Leo’s favourtite artists.”
When asked how much they are wanting to raise, they told us: “We are shooting for the moon.”
PAPYRUS is the national charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide. Every year over 1,600 young people take their own lives in the UK with suicide being the leading cause of death of people under 35.
If you would like to support their event and help raise money for this amazing charity, you can purchase tickets at www.cantstandmenow.charity, or to sponsor this evening you can email Michael on michael@cantstandmenow.charity or call 07495 669162.
Michael and James are committed to raising as much money as possible for this excellent charity.

83-year-old local man completes
286th Scunthorpe Parkrun for c Back in January, Michael McInerney challenged himself to run his 286th Scunthorpe Parkrun, raising funds for cancer patients at the Queen’s Centre at Castle Hill Hospital where he was treated for two-and-a-half years Michael McInerney, 83, has always loved the great outdoors. As a keen cyclist, he took part in cycle cross where he would dash through the countryside. Michael took up running in his mid-40s and took part in his first marathon in Boston, Lincolnshire.
daily and run parkrun every morning. I get around town using my pushbike – so I am generally quite active.
Shortly after this, he secured a place for the London Marathon, and it’s safe to say, from there it cemented his love for running. Now, 30 years later, Michael has completed 35 full marathons, over 100 half-marathons, and took part in no less than 285 Parkruns, raising funds for charities close to his heart during this time.
What is your biggest achievement, is there a specific run that stands out? I would say running the London Marathon 19 times, with my best time of three hours five minutes, but my favourite running races are the Dublin Marathon and Cleethorpes 10k.
Scunthorpe Journal caught up with both Michael and his granddaughter, Amy, for a chat. Michael, how do you manage to keep so focused and fit? I don’t really think about it to be honest, I walk about three miles
Page 8
Do you plan on running more throughout the year? Yes absolutely, I am hoping to continue running parkrun on Saturdays and maybe club championships.
Amy, you must be extremely proud of your grandad? I’m extremely proud of him. I think his determination through being an athlete has helped him through the difficult time he faced. He’s got a great support network through cycling and running and he loves that he’s

able to use that to be able to give back to Castle Hill hospital. Amy, how do you feel when you run alongside your grandad? It feels great, he inspires me but also many others to do better but also realise our own potentials. It’s ace to see him still being able to partake in something that makes him so happy and being as active as he is at age 83. Amy, if you could sum your grandad up in a few words, what would they be? Motivated, inspirational, determined and kindhearted. Keep up the great work Michael, you are such an inspiration.
