FROM A POLICE 300 searches by Search Dog Roscoe In this edition, Scunthorpe Police talk to our readers about the brilliant year search dog, Roscoe, has had in tackling the crime and taking drugs of Scunthorpe and surrounding areas’ streets
“Suspects often find inventive hiding places for things that they do not want us to find, such as drugs, weapons and cash, and where it may take our teams some time to search every inch of a car or building, a dog can do it in minutes.”

E PERSPECTIVE: It’s been a strange year for many reasons, but one thing that hasn’t changed is the relentless commitment of our Neighbourhood Policing Teams across the force to tackle crime and take drugs off our streets.
PC Lee Watson, the dedicated Neighbourhood Policing Team officer for Town Ward of Scunthorpe said: “Dogs are a fantastic asset to our teams as they have specialist skills that are invaluable during patrols, searches and warrants.
One team member who has played a key part in doing just that this year is search dog Roscoe.
“Suspects often find inventive hiding places for things that they do not want us to find, such as drugs, weapons and cash, and where it may take our teams some time to search every inch of a car or building, a dog can do it in minutes.
Roscoe has been paramount in supporting our officers in Scunthorpe in their proactive work to tackle the supply and possession of drugs across our communities. He has supported targeted patrols, drugs warrants and stop searches - helping us seize drugs and arrest those suspected of committing crimes. Since he first came out with our teams in January 2021 we have seen a total of: - 300 people stopped and searched under section 23 of the misuse of drugs act - 18 arrests on suspicion of offences including robbery, possession of drugs with intent to supply and possession of a blade, among others. - 19 Cannabis warnings issued - 10 Youth Offending referrals - 9 summons to court - 2 Traffic Report Offence reports issued
“As part of our local Neighbourhood Policing activity we have been listening to feedback from our local communities and we understand their concerns around alcohol and drug related antisocial behaviour across the town centre. “We recognise the impact this can cause and we are committed to taking proactive action - taking drugs off our streets and holding those responsible to account – keeping our communities safe. “This work with search dog Roscoe is a great example of how we can work innovatively with partners and our local communities to take action against the issues they are telling us are causing them concern. “I am already excited to see what we can achieve with support from our communities and Roscoe next year”.

beautiful parks and gardens in running for national award The region’s beautiful parks and gardens have received national recognition after being shortlisted for a coveted award from environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy North Lincolnshire Council has fought off stiff competition from across the country to be one of just three authorities in the running for the Love Parks Award 2022.
have gone from strength to strength over the past few years, as is shown by the fact we now have five Green Flag awards – they just keep getting better and better.
The awards recognise and celebrate local authorities committed to making significant improvements to the environment on residents’ doorsteps, from community engagement work to waste enforcement work.
“I would like to congratulate the teams involved, and all the volunteers, who have made our parks such beautiful places to visit and a welcome sanctuary in these difficult times.”
Cllr David Rose, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “This is a brilliant achievement, though not at all surprising – everyone can see how our parks

“We know that people want to live in places that are clean and tidy and local authorities have a massive role to play in this and should rightly be recognised for their efforts. “We are thrilled that so many authorities entered our awards and, again, the standard was incredibly high. We look forward to seeing representatives from North Lincolnshire at our awards ceremony in Birmingham in February.” Sheffield Park in Scunthorpe already received coveted Green Flag status this year, joining Scunthorpe’s Central Park, Kingsway Gardens and
Woodlands Memorial Gardens along with Barton’s Baysgarth Park. Recent projects include the opening of a sensory garden next to Lindsey Lodge Hospice in Sheffield Park and the ongoing development of a baby memorial garden in Central Park. Work will also begin soon on an outdoor gym area in Baysgarth Park. The award winners will be announced early in 2022. We wish the best of luck to North Lincolnshire Council, and Scunthorpe and surrounding areas.

The Beautiful South’s co-founder Dave Hemingway’s new band SUNBIRDS on tour in 2022! The man who once told us he loved us from the bottom of his pencil case, co-founder of The Beautiful South, Dave Hemingway, returns with new band Sunbirds who will perform in Hull on June 18th Having retired from the live scene at the back end of 2016, Dave has been keeping busy together with erstwhile South colleague, guitarist/songwriter Phil Barton, new discovery singer/violinist Laura Wilcockson and drummer Marc Parnell. ‘Cool To Be Kind’ was released in November 2020, on the independent label Nectar Records signalling the arrival of Sunbirds with new songs and a new sound.

It tells tales that cover contemporary themes as well as age-old matters of the heart and soul - all
Although born and bred in England, the band’s sound predominantly features the instrumentation of traditional American roots music combined with the occasional outburst of guitar heavy melody more associated with Seattle in the late 80s/early 90s.
