Launch of Scunthorpe’s first ever pride festival

A small team of volunteers are working hard to bring Scunthorpe its first ever Pride festival. The aim is to shine a positive light on our town and show support for our LGBTQ+ community. Many people who identify as LGBTQ+ in the town feel isolated or rejected as they want things to change

Taking place on Sunday 27th August at Church Square Garden & Library Square, this event is for the wider community and beyond and not limited to those within the LGBTQ+ community.

Different people from all walks of life are invited to attend and celebrate this day of inclusion, culture, diversity and visibility in our small town.

The main children’s and family entertainment will be 12pm until 2pm with Sprinkle Of Magic and there will be many more activities going on with arts, upcycling your clothes, games, meeting characters, stilt walkers, just to name a few.

International drag queen Ida Slapter is the host for the day. Ida has a huge fan base and bags of charm and is a queen of many

talents - she’s sure to keep you laughing.

There is a little surprise planned to kick off the main event after 2pm, which hopes to include various dance, drama groups, charities, sports teams and other community groups. The team made the difficult decision to hold off on having a parade the first time around as it wanted to focus on the main event.

Page 6 Scunthorpe Journal is brought to you by CreateTVT Please mention Scunthorpe Journal when calling advertisers

There will be local bands and performers on the main stage with a few surprises along the way and they’ve secured excellent rising talent in the form of Khalysis pronounced “Ca Lee Sis”. You may not have heard of them, but you are sure to love them!

There will be an onsite contained bar area for the adults, a Pride market and

various food vendors providing a good selection of tasty treats.

As the evening progresses the entertainment will feature fire breathers and a live performance from local burlesque troupe, The Twisted Belles. Local venues may put on afterparties for Pride after hours.

The full line-up has yet to be announced so keep your eye on

social media. Local businesses and organisations are getting involved with sponsorship, stalls and support and the event has received an excellent response so far. There is still time to get involved and show your support.

If you wish to speak to one of the event’s volunteers, please email scunnylgbts@gmail.com

Largest ever intake of

In April, Humberside Police attested 80 new police officers, the largest ever intake in its history

“It is an incredible achievement to have recruited more than 46,000 officers, giving us more than 20,000 additional officers over the last three years. These additional police officers are much welcomed, bringing a breadth of experience, skills, and diversity to their communities.”

PERSPECTIVE:

of new police officers

The new officers were inspected and sworn in by Chief Constable Lee Freeman KPM on Thursday 13 April

Mr Freeman said: “Not only is this our first intake of 2023, it’s the largest ever intake in Humberside Police history. The intake finalises our contribution to the National Police Uplift Programme, which has seen 856 new officers join our ranks over the past three-and-a-half years.

“From a baseline of 1,550 officers in 2017, to the current high of 2,294, Humberside Police will now use these additional numbers to improve even further and deliver more highly visible and proactive policing that our communities are asking for.”

The Police Uplift Programme started in 2019, with a government manifesto pledge to increase the number of police officers nationally by 20,000 before 1 April 2023. This target has been met, with 20,951 new officers being recruited across England and Wales. There are also 725 more officers working on tackling Serious and Organised Crime.

Policing is now more diverse, with more

female officers (53,000) and more ethnic minority officers (12,000) than ever before. And we have a record high number of police officers nationally, with 149,572 serving across England and Wales as of 31 March 2023.

Speaking on the national picture, Gavin Stephens, Chair of the National Police Chief’s Council, said: “It is an incredible achievement to have recruited more than 46,000 officers, giving us more than 20,000 additional officers over the last three years. These additional police officers are much welcomed, bringing a breadth of experience, skills, and diversity to their communities.

“Those that joined at the start of the programme are now completing training and making a difference every day in Forces across England and Wales. It fills me with optimism that so many talented colleagues have joined with a real desire to keep their communities safe and feeling safe.”

NORTHERN LINCOLNSHIRE BUSINESS AWARDS 2023 - THE WINNERS

A huge congratulations to CorrBoard who was the overall winner selected from the 13 categories.

The ceremony was a huge event where many local businesses spent the night supporting one another on the great successess each have had over the past year.

Rob Burgin, managing director, also a finalist in the Wilkin Chapman Business Person of the Year category, said: “We have a fantastic team and this is brilliant for our business. We are progressing, and the way our people are progressing makes me extremely proud. This

reflects on how sustainable we are, how we support a circular economy, reducing carbon to become a really responsible manufacturer. We are not a huge employer - we have just under 100 people - but they all live in Scunthorpe and this is fantastic for everyone back in the business.”

Albert Weatherill, Hull and Humber Chamber of Commerce president, said the ceremony was a “shining example of what a thriving business community can achieve”, praising entrepreneurs and leaders for the “incredible work accomplished” in “pushing boundaries, embracing change and making invaluable contributions to the local economy”.
