20-21 Visual Arts Centre marks 20th anniversary with moon exhibition and more!
20-21 Visual Arts Centre in Scunthorpe, is housed in the former St John’s Church building. On May 19, 2021, the centre celebrated its 20th anniversary in its namesake year 20-21 reopened its doors to the public on May 17 with an exciting programme of exhibitions and events to mark the occasion. This includes a largescale, illuminated replica installation of the moon entitled the Museum of the Moon - a touring exhibition by UK artist Luke Jerram. Visitors can admire the stunning moon sculpture, measuring six metres in diameter, which will hang within the atmospheric

nave of the Grade II* listed, former church building at 20-21. The moon features a fusion of 120dpi-detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface, together with moonlight and surround sound composition created by BAFTA and Ivor Novello awardwinning composer Dan Jones. 20-21 has an interesting history. The venue is housed in the former St John’s the Evangelist Church building, which was a place of worship until its last service in 1984. After that the
building stood derelict for many years until North Lincolnshire Council undertook a huge transformation project to develop, restore and convert the building into a visual arts centre. 20-21 opened to the public on May 19, 2001. The name ‘20-21’ refers to the project starting in the 20th Century (1998) and being completed in the 21st Century (May 2001). Today, 20-21 has five exhibition spaces showing a range of

contemporary art and crafts from local, regional, national and international artists. The unique history of the venue will be showcased in a 20th anniversary ‘the Story of 20-21’ exhibition, which is set to open on May 17, 2021. This will feature information about previous exhibitions and notable visits, including one from Her Majesty the Queen and the late HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, as well as past images and press cuttings celebrating the history
of the organisation and 20 years of creativity in Scunthorpe.
17 to begin our 20th anniversary celebrations.
Michelle Lally, Creative Arts Manager, said: “We are extremely proud of our significant history and heritage as a leading contemporary arts venue in North Lincolnshire. We’re really looking forward to inviting people back to see the wonderful array of exhibitions that we have planned. We have been busy preparing and, subject to government announcements, we will be ready to reopen on May
“As we celebrate our past and look to the future, it is important for us to celebrate all the talented artists, past and present, who have exhibited with us and our dedicated staff that have made the venue what it is today. We hope that the public will join us at our exhibitions and events (some virtual and in person) throughout the year.” For more information, visit www.2021visualartscentre.co.uk

Ponds for great crested newts to be created locally Several ponds are set to be created in the North Lincolnshire area, thanks to a new scheme funded by Natural England designed to protect the great crested newt (GCN) species Wildscapes CIC has been appointed by Natural England to create ponds across the region this year and is seeking farmers and landowners who would like to have these habitats created or restored on their land. Wildscapes CIC will carry out all pond creation/restoration works (including adding suitable fencing if required) and all landowners are asked to do is to take a few basic measures to protect the habitat quality of the pond. These ponds are required to be a minimum size of 150m2 and Wildscapes CIC will carry out maintenance and monitoring visits on a periodic basis over 25 years.
Page 14
Steven Greenwood, Conservation Contracts Manager for Wildscapes on the Great Crested Newts scheme, explains: “During the 20th century, half of the UK’s ponds were lost, and this has led to the serious decline of the great crested newt population. This scheme is designed to support the development process to create more habitats and to secure the long-term protection of this important, protected species. Scunthorpe Journal had a chat with Nicola Livsey to find out more about the impact the project will have in our local area. What areas of Scunthorpe are potential spots for the ponds? We have maps from Natural
Please mention Scunthorpe Journal when calling advertisers
England that highlight areas of interest. These are quite patchy so we would take postcodes and/or grid references from interested landowners to see if they meet the criteria. In general, these tend not to be in built-up areas, rather larger green spaces. The reason behind this is quite complex but essentially we want to create ponds in areas most likely to be colonised by great crested newts, so the chosen locations are usually not too far away from known great crested newt populations and within a corridor that could link up
June/July 2021 - Issue 22
several populations. What do you hope the ponds will bring to the community? It’s a great opportunity for people to get involved in a project to preserve the population of a declining species. The number of ponds in the UK has declined significantly over the last 50 years, and with it, suitable habitat for great crested newts. New ponds will create additional green spaces for local communities to enjoy and as we’re also restoring ponds that are in a poor state of repair, it gives landowners, farmers and communities the chance to
revive ponds without any cost or effort. How can people get involved in the project? In the first instance we’d like interested landowners to contact us by phone or email with a rough postcode/grid reference of the land they have in mind. We’ll run a couple of checks against our maps and if it’s in a target area we’ll then arrange
to visit the site and talk the landowner through the process. We’re keen to get at least 25 ponds completed by October and as we’re expecting to need planning permission (6-8 weeks) we’re keen to get the process started as soon as possible. For more information on the project, please visit www. wildscapes.co.uk/pond-creation

SUMMER LEARNING
Kip Mcgrath provides its top tips for when school is out and how you can still keep your children’s brains engaged What an unprecedented year this has been for teachers, parents and pupils alike. The cancellation of summer exams for two consecutive years, and the challenge of home schooling and online learning has certainly not been dull. As the summer holidays are nearly here (I know, we can’t believe it either!), we can all breathe a sigh of relief, relax, watch TV and take life much slower. Perhaps we will be able to enjoy sunnier days and be able to socialise a little more. The summer is also a good time to look at the learning gaps that the disruption to the school routine last year has left and get ahead without the pressure of a school day as well. Some students may benefit from
consolidating missed learning and getting ahead with the following academic year’s work. Therefore, has your child mastered the skills they need to move to a new class, a new school or perhaps they will have exams to sit next summer? You may be able to help them by finding creative ways to keep them learning. For example, cooking, reading, art, nature walks, writing a blog, recording a video diary and science experiments are all great to keep your child’s brain active and engaged. We help students Catch up, Keep Up and Get Ahead in their learning. For more information, contact Clare Powell (Kip McGrath Tuition and Cellfield Dyslexia Centre, 01724 375945)
