This one is no different, as you can see on the cover we feature Kiki Barth, model and entrepreneur of Haitian descendance, who graced us with so much than just her time and talent. What she agreed to represent was much bigger than all of us. Taking the form of art, through body painting, the lines of an ancestry that deserves honor and homage.

Visual Artist Make Sakic

ANE When we come across phenomenal and humble artists, it is always a pleasure for us to tell their story. Mane Sakic, a visual artists from Belgrade Serbia, is definitely not new to the world of celebrity. His mother, Olivera Katarina, which according to sources is an actress, singer and writer. She was one of the leading stars of Yugoslav cinema in the 1960s and the 1970s, and is probably the best known for her performance in Aleksandar Petrović's film I Even Met Happy Gypsies (1967), which won the Grand Prix at the 1967 Cannes Film Festival. A legend in her own right. Coming from a family of artists Mane could only follow in their footsteps. He has exhibited in Serbia, Spain as well as the USA and we’ve had the pleasure of getting to know him through the following conversation, Enjoy!

W

Your abstract art seems to be hiding strong messages in them. Am I right or am I off? I believe that my work is more interactive. I’m trying to bring the viewer into my perspective and to share the experience. it’s more like a frozen moment on a journey. We often use the word “abstract” when we don’t or can’t see things clearly, so when we are faced with the unknown we call them “abstract.” it’s like the darkness of the universe: everything is alive and colorful but sometimes we just see darkness.

To be a celebrity in a socialist country, as former Yugoslavia, was much different than it is in the U.S.

What is your favorite piece and what sparked its creation? My favorite piece is Phoenix. I did a lot of layers and just left the small details of each layer. I was actually imitating a higher universal cosmic brain, a brain that is cruel and creative. To build a perfect image you have to sacrifice a lot, sometimes almost everything, but the final results always looks like something unbreakable and almost eternal—it’s like Phoenix, who was reborn from the ashes.

Being the son of Olivera Katarina, did you have to grow up with the expectations of walking in her footsteps as a celebrity or did you always know that you wanted to paint? First of all, to be a celebrity in a socialist country, as former Yugoslavia, was much different than it is in the U.S. Sometimes I was afraid to say who my mother was when I was a kid. Since she worked mostly in the West successfully, and especially after I Even Met Happy Gypsies (1967), it was actually very difficult for her to be a movie star in a socialist country for both her and her family. She was on the blacklist for over

thirty years and my father, who was a politician of that time, also struggled because of their marriage. They both chose love over the Communist party, which created a lot of problems for my parents and I. I always wanted to paint and write, but I never wanted to be an actor, though I had a few small roles in movies before.

Mane's Favorite painting

Your method of painting seems very unique. As a matter of fact these terms were used: juxtaposing of opposing techniques. would you care to elaborate a little? I work in layers and what I choose to represent in each layer symbolizes a frame ripped from time, but these frames all relate to each other in a specific way. I carefully choose each small puzzle piece in each layer the same way a poet carefully chooses each word in a stanza to conjure meaning—it’s about precision in communicating meaning. My deliberate choices for each layer lead to a final painting that looks almost like ruins, and the ruins (or pieces of the painting) serve as an eclectic selection of what is meaningful and creating the bigger picture of truth.

strong vertical energy. Everyday I feel like I have a view from the top of the highest mountain, it’s a very intense and inspirational feeling, especially when you feel you became a gifted Spartan. They say that an artist never has one talent, do you have a hidden talent that you would like to share with us? I’m writing, like my mother does. I wrote a play about historical circumstances of my hometown, Belgrade, from 1915–45. It’s a story about “blood and honey,” a story about the Balkans and the “White City,” of Belgrade. Do you have any plans for the near future? Do you have any new pieces in the works?

Mane walks the red carpet with is mother Olivera Katarina

When did you first fall in love with art ? How did you know this is what you wanted to do? My father was the vice president of city hall, and he was helping a lot of artists, especially painters. Some of them were dissidence, and they were the best Serbian painters. I grew up around their paintings and I was always drawing on the walls in between the paintings, but the artists would tell my parents that they shouldn’t be mad at me and they should leave me to do my own thing. I always knew I wanted to do the same thing. I used to make exhibitions with my drawings as a kid when my parents were away to try and surprise them when they came back; I would make signs saying, “Welcome to the show.”

I’m currently planning some exhibitions and I’m working on paintings inspired by Nikola Tesla. I feel connected to Tesla and his interests in crystals and stardust, perhaps because my grandmother is from the same village as Tesla in former Yugoslavia. My grandmother escaped from Nazis before 1941, but they killed almost everyone in the village, even members of Tesla’s family, but somehow our people survived and here we are. We always like to finish with some words of inspiration for those who look up to you, any advice that you would like to share? Everything is connected somehow but we just have to find those tools to communicate better and with more love and understanding. Strong will and energy of love in our hearts will allow us to be more connected and stronger. The arts are the perfect way and the fastest way to make that contact real and alive. A star and a human being are from the same material stardust, and stardust is crystal. The electron is like a perfect harmonic and symmetrical crystal, it’s a formula for beauty that we should follow.

Do you have a ritual do you go through before you create or does it come naturally? No, I just start a work and I’m inspired. I’m always inspired to work. I’m only uninspired by politicians and conformists.

You’ve exhibited in Spain and now have come to the USA, is there a country that you would dream of exposing your art to? I love New York and this is the place to be if you’re an artist. It’s tough, but I like it, it’s like modern Sparta, but it’s an honest place with

ABOUT RICHARD:

Tribal art is the visual arts and material culture of indigenous peoples. Also known as ethnographic art, or, controversially, primitive art. We have had the privilege of

A multi-talented artist often referred to as a “jack of all trades”. He has a passion for life and hunger for success. This talented thirty-five year-old started a career with the federal government over ten years ago. While working there, he managed to go to school to become a licensed massage therapist. Model turned photographer, his vision and craft for photography, fashion, and modeling continued to grow.

having Tribal artist Andrew Millar, grace us with his talent, as he depicts the beauty there is in painting these fine lines over the half naked body of Kiki Barth. According to our head stylist, which idea was to represent Haitian/African roots through art, She wanted to present the evolution of human kind despite what the black race had to endure then and now. As a people, throughout history we have been told that our culture, our skin, our blackness don’t matter. Through slavery we have been conditioned to believe that we were less than human, a dehumanization process that lasted at least 400 years. However, we have learned to recognized our strength through our ancestry. We are a proud people. We are a strong people. The fun part about this process was to learn more about these tribal meaning, according to Millar’s blog for example “masks usually have a spiritual and religious meaning and they are used in ritual dances and social and religious events, and a special status is attributed to the artists that create masks to those that wear them in ceremonies. In most cases, mask-making is an art that is passed on from father to son, along with the knowledge of the symbolic meanings conveyed by such masks. African masks come in all different colours, such as red, black, orange, and brown.”There is so much to learn about the world of tribal painting and tattoos."

Born in New York and raised in Haiti, the unfortunate passing of his father left Richard to take on many responsibilities at the very young age of thirteen. Fast forward Richard became his mother’s primary caretaker during her battle with cancer, all while working full-time, modeling, and pushing to get his degree before his mother’s passing. This all drove Richard to embody hard work, dedication and sacrifice. His “nothing can stop me” attitude propelled him to where he is today. As an homage to our roots a group of art enthusiasts have decided to put together a beautiful spread lead by stylist Fabienne Descadres, featuring International Model Kiki Barth and photographed by Richard Lecoin. Enjoy as we bring you DEEPLY ROOTED. The following spread was photographed by Richard Lecoin, accompanied by his lead stylist Fabienne Descadres and many other talent on set.

In November of 2010, after his mother’s passing, Richard moved to Miami to start anew. Married now, with three kids, he finds himself engulfed in a number of exciting opportunities such as bookings for the HBO series Ballers, Empire’s Jussie Smollett aka Jamal featuring Pitbull music video “No Doubt About It”, and Pepsi Max’s Uncle Drew Series Part 4. Richard's love for the camera continues to carry his vision to "capture a moment in time". He has since worked tirelessly to expand his photography with a number of private projects, building his brand, Richard Lecoin Photography.

Swim Week in Miami has been the go-to event of the summer in South Florida. It's the week where designer swimwear and resort wear are flaunted in front of the social

elite. When attending Miami’s Swim Week 2016, I noticed something was missing, which made the entire experience a little unsettling. There were no representation of myself or my community. It was hard to relate to the entire experience including fashion shows and after parties. Miami is known to be a big melting pot of many cultures, so why is this not seen during Miami's hottest week in fashion. Evelyn Onyejuruwa Founder and CEO of Ankara Miami noticed the same thing as myself, in turn she created Ankara Miami, special events company and producers of Florida's Premier African fashion week that continues to highlight individuals in the African Diaspora. Ankara coordinates a production twice a year, once in February and another in July to go along with Swim Week in Miami. Ankara Swim is a must-see fashion showcase that people of our community should heavily promote and support. This year was not a disappointment. The event was coordinated and organized by MD Simmons Productions, hosted by entrepreneur and model Adoch and comedian Marcellus "Chello" Davis and the music was provided by DJ Baboo. The fashion showcase had remarkable pieces from designers who were are all inspired by the culture of the motherland, Africa. I can definitely note that each designer's collection was original and unique. Presentations included Jama Collections, Shahedah Textiles, RuvAfricWear, Aleena Swim, Fabian & Mom, and Tresor Luxx Collections. As I have always stated it is highly important to support events within our community that highlight our culture. These events can only succeed if the community supports and promotes to help advance our community. If you all missed this event be sure to attend the next Ankara Miami fashion showcase that will be held February.

LOLLI SWIM Designed by Vy Nguyen

Known for its ultra-feminine and fun swimwear, Lolli Swim debuted its Resort 2018 collection, Stay Golden, as the official kickoff show at Funkshion Fashion Week Miami at Collins Park to a full house, which included the reveal of the brand’s first-ever lingerie and footwear line, and a collaborative capsule collection with model and influencer, Sofia Jamora. Founded and designed by Vy Nguyen, Lolli Swim’s Resort 2018 collection is inspired by classic California beach babes, golden tans, cotton candy skies and the sweet taste of summer. To capture her playful spirit, Lolli partnered with the viral art installation, Museum of Ice Cream, to provide the first 200 guests glitter cotton candy. “I loved watching Gidget and all the beach bombshell movies with my sister growing up. The music, the style of hair and just everything about that era inspires me. Lolli is always very flirty and feminine. This Resort 2018, we're doing a mix of vintage florals with blush and nude tones, and also playing with new textures and fabric from shiny rib to soft velvet,” said Vy Nguyen, Lolli Founder and Designer. The Resort 2018 elevated its take on vintage florals through hand-embroidered floral accents for added texture and attention to detail. Feminine flattering silhouettes include cut-out one-pieces, bandeau with shoulder tie tops, demi underwire bikinis and one-pieces for added retro flair, and classic string bikinis ranging from mid to minimal coverage. Fabrics include a mix of delicate appliques, handembroidery, soft velvet and shiny rib. Lolli surprised the crowd with the reveal of its first-ever lingerie and footwear line. This is the brand’s first-time diving into the apparel industry outside of swim, accessories and resortwear. Staying true to its namesake, Lolli’s lingerie is delicate and feminine, designed to complement women with a flirty edge in a range of nudes to hot and pastel pinks. Detailed with lace, dainty bows and ruffles the line debuts with panties, bras and a nightie for women. Lolli Lingerie is slated to release for pre-spring in January 2018. The runway also included the reveal of a capsule collection with Sofia Jamora, available for pre-sale now through Miami Swim Week exclusively at ilovelolli.com. Worn and modeled by Sofia herself, the Sof for Lolli Collection embodies the long-time Lolli lover’s favorites with reversible black & nude rib and peach & lavender rib sets ideal for tanning, worn as a bra & panty set or just lounging at the beach. Lolli’s footwear collection includes a range of classic thong sandals, metallic slides, and glitter jelly mules. Colors inspired by the Stay Golden concept include shades of pink, tans, and golden browns for easy-to-wear sandals for beach or street. Looks down the runway were conceptualized by Nguyen to play-up the collections’ femininity with luminous makeup, including glitter, pastel hues, and beach wave hair with delicate braid details.

Prey Swim hosted their first Miami Swim Week runway presentation at SWIMMIAMI, debuting their Resort 2018, and Pre-Fall 2017 collections along with looks from Summer 2017. The runway show featured the brand creator and designer Audrina Patridge’s visions come to life, transporting the viewer to the South of France, South America and Marrakech through the line’s exotic designs, colors, and figure flattering styles. Audrina closed the show rocking a sexy sheer bodysuit + netted skirt combo, paired with ShoeDazzle strappy heels, and layered jewelry by Luv AJ, Les Deux, Briwok and Alisa Michelle, hand in hand with model Sierra Skye, who was yesterday’s Sports Illustrated’ Lovely Lady of the Day. The models walked out to tunes by DJ Jessica Who, transporting them to each exotic collection location. Other notable influencers in attendance front row included supermodel Tyson Beckford, Khloe Terae, Kier Mellour, Sarah Potempa, Roman Palumbo, Jimmy Somers, Harmony Carter, Carmen Carrera, Nick Montealegre, Alana Greszata, Seth Browarnik, and Audrina’s sister Samantha Patridge who cheered her on from the front row. About the collections: The Joya Collection (Resort 2018) - Known as the mecca of understated boho fashion during the 1970s, Peru is the main inspiration for the Joya Collection (means jewel). From its exotic fruits and flowers, Incan ruins, colonial palaces and indigenous designs, the muted jewel tones and geometric shapes, plus the rich layering of textiles, have been meticulously applied to make this one of Prey Swim’s most sultry collections yet. Featuring custom Peruvian inspired prints, the color palette incorporates pink, red and blue shimmers, glittering gold, matte black and smokey gray, along with animal prints that attribute to beautiful South American wild cats. The show featured a slew of sunkissed models and swim influencers such as Sierra Skye (@SierraaaSkyee), Ashlen Alexandra (@AshlenAlexandra) and Tiffany Keller (@TiffanyKeller) rocking Prey’s new suit silhouettes, paired with shoes by ShoeDazzle that perfectly complemented the collection (ShoeDazzle.com). The runway looks, styled by fashion stylist Ali Dariotis in collaboration with Prey Swim’s brand director and technical designer Kat Zepeda, were accessorized with jewelry designs by Luv AJ, Alisa Michelle, Les Deux and Briwok with hats by Gladys Tamez Millinery and sunglasses by Wildfox Boutique. For hair, Celebrity Hair Stylist Sarah Potempa of The Beachwaver Co. created the perfect collection-inspired runway look featuring tousled long waves, in collaboration with Hair Stylist Adam Bogucki of Living Proof. Models showcased makeup by Stroke of Beauty led by Makeup Artist Amanda May, and nail designs by Deco Miami Nail Lacquer.

Unapologetically Black

B

88 | CREATIV | Jun - Jul 2017 | www.creativmag.com

In the popular cultured Netflix series “Dear White People”, many issues within the black community were spoken about within the show that we all can relate to. Reflecting back on how the show expresses certain topics, its appalling to know that we have a friend or family member who has been through one or more of the racists situations. For instance, being arrested for being black or dealing with stereotypes on a daily basis, makes me feel angry that we have to go through discrimination just because of who we are. One moment in the show caught my attention, it had me think of the cultural identity of the future generation. Colondrea “CoCo” Conners was the representation of the black youth who felt being Caucasian would bring more simplicity to the life of a “inner city” youth. With her upbringing in the Southside of Chicago, Conners has dealt with different hardships than her classmates. However, she didn’t let her tough childhood kill her motivation to pursue her goals. CoCo discovered a way to tone down her blackness by appealing to the better judgement of white people and by doing so she thought this would bring her more opportunities in life. Toning down her blackness meant changing her hair, changing her style, choosing her friends carefully and even changing her own ideas and beliefs. How many times have we seen this type of individual within our community? Young black children, regardless of their upbringing, should not be growing up thinking that being black is an insult to society. Instead, they should be accepting who they are and to never be ashamed of where they come from.

World history teaches us that being black is like having incurable disease that comes to the worst of individuals. Black people who are jailed, stricken by poverty, or offered less in a world they’ve built from slavery, were not told that in fact they are the key component to the start of civilization. So, it makes sense why we have the CoCo Conners, or to speak in more realistically the Stacy Dash, in this world of ours. In the past, there hasn’t been any positive images of black people for our community to gravitate to. I must say it is still a struggle today, even after having a black man as the President of the United States of America, for the black community to be accepted as equals. Our future generation needs to understand that being Unapologetically Black is not a crime; therefore, they will be more than comfortable conquering a world with the odds against them.

The best solution is to educate our community on our history, as a black people within a society. Education allows them to understand and love who they are as a people, so that their confidence will never be altered by a racist or bigot who will shame them for being only who they know how to be. Unapologetically Black.

Story Telling

LOVING YOU Through the Looking-Glass By Yvonne Nobles This one is especially for the ladies. Dear Beautiful Fountains of Life: to know your worth is to know your power. It is far too easy to get consumed by the mundane, to become absorbed in checking another item off our evergrowing to-do lists, to feel overwhelmed by the emergence of two new challenges for each problem we solve. The magnitude of a moment's pause as we go about our busy lives is often overlooked and undervalued. Let's spend a little time peering at our reflections in the mirror of introspection. Are you looking for love? Not a passing fancy, but the toetingling, heart-aching, hold your breath, make the hair on the back of your neck stand up kind of love? If your answer is yes, then you may want to brace yourself for what's coming next. STOP immediately.

But what do you look like on the inside? Many are disappointed when a seedling of attraction refuses to blossom into love. This can usually be attributed to failure to be a P.Y.T. within. Add up the hours you spend each day on your physical up-keep. Be sure to include your gym/exercise sessions, bathing/ showering, selecting an outfit, coordinating your shoes and accessories, applying war paint, making healthy dining choices, manicures and pedicures, time spent at the hair salon, and the all-important beauty sleep. Now tally the time you expend on your inner beauty. Do you find a significant deficit when you compare it to the volume of hours spent polishing the surface? When's the last time you paused to listen to the voice inside, the whisper that guides you on the path to becoming the best possible version of yourself? Are you daily making your mind and heart over so that when the love of your life arrives, no time is wasted? Investing in becoming a better you is always time well spent.

That was not a misprint, nor are your eyes playing tricks on you. This is a jagged little pill, a truth that most will find difficult to swallow. Yet the sooner you embrace it, the sooner you unleash your power to attract the very thing you've been longing for so long. Looking for L.O.V.E. is most times an exercise in futility because she cannot be hunted. She is an elusive gazelle of the wild. She will never be hemmed in, and her seeming timidity is just an illusion. You see, the process actually works in reverse: true love will come looking for you. The key lies in being prepared once it arrives. Far too often, we are caught off guard. This isn't in a physical sense; let's face it, most of us won't leave the house without our makeup on, no less without rocking a fabulous wardrobe, glam heels or having our hair perfectly coiffed.

This applies equally to those that may be in a relationship, but feel the thrill is gone. Do your part to reignite the flame. Instead of waiting for your partner to do all the work, graciously accept that love is a shared responsibility. What can you do differently from this moment hence to demonstrate how deeply you love your soulmate? As with most areas in life, when it comes to love, the more you give the more you get. It is only when you shine from the inside out that true love will manifest. Always strive to shine brighter than the sun, for you never know who may be drawn to your light. Make a commitment to yourself and to those you care about to live more in the now. Do more than just "be" - instead live with intention by refusing to be content with shallow waters. Swim deeply through the ocean that surrounds you, putting forth conscious effort to be fully connected each time you are honored to have an exchange. The more we value others, the taller our own pedestal becomes and the larger our thrones.

TREASURE HUNT Hmmm… So you wanna know what I’m lookin’ for? How I know when I’ve found the one I won’t let go? Take a seat and make yourself comfortable – This might take a while. First and foremost: he’ll discover me, NOT the other way around. Um-hmm, that’s right! You see, a man values you more When he’s had to work up a sweat Not running from you, but Digging through the granite rock of The layers of a frozen, calloused heart. Don’t interfere, you hear? Never meddle in a busy man’s affairs. Let him keep at it till he’s struck gold And he’s yours for life. Moving on…these things take time. The art of love isn’t a rudimentary attempt To connect the dots. It’s SO much more! Think DaVinci or Michelangelo, Perhaps a bit disjointed at times like Picasso And at other times as mysteriously elusive as Dali, But every wise soul knows: good things come to those who wait. Let him lay it on the line like a slow, southern drawl, Like the flow of molasses in winter, or a lazy centipede’s crawl. TAKE…YOUR…TIME. Sound too tough? Worry not – the reward will be well worth the sacrifice. ‘Cos only fools rush in and There’s nothing worse than thinking you’ve found A genuine nugget, a priceless gem Only to discover it’s just fool’s gold. Real love ain’t for the faint of heart, Lily-livered, yellow-foots need not apply. And, now, true love’s recipe: Light…my…fire… With the flame of Jah, A searing heat and soothing warmth that will never die. Woo me with the world of YOU, The length, height, breadth and depth of you. Let me savor the flavor of Passion fruit, date palm clusters, pineapple Then leave me wanting more. Kindly wait for me, quietly, patiently. Each moment, you live, deeply breathe me. Really get to know me, then help heal me. You feel me? This thing we have will never grow cold. Love’s value exceeds all the world’s gemstones, silver and gold. Ever reinventing itself, it feeds on Excitement, exhaling, examining the heart and mind, Exorcising the past and exceeding all expectations. For real though, X marks the spot. www.creativmag.com | Jun - Jul 2017 | CREATIV | 91

Love and Relationships

Q. Let’s face it, dating is not what it used to be, and neither are the single people doing it. It’s not because the Earth has tilted or the world is coming to an end, it’s that we’re in a new day-and-age and with things changing so rapidly, dating has taken on a whole new meaning in the 21st century. What most of us would like to believe, is that 21st century dating is dating centered around technology or some futuristic kind of thing. That’s a part of it, but what I’m referring to is dating that’s untraditional, unconventional and ugly. 21st 92 | CREATIV | Jun - Jul 2017 | www.creativmag.com

Are you Prepared for 21st Century Dating?

century dating involves no calls back after sex, no more text messages that say Good morning after getting those messages for two weeks and dating men/women that have their hands out waiting for you to pay their past due light bill… (who KNEW?) In order to mentally prepare for the unsightly side of dating today, here are some pointers to groom you for the crazies that come with, what I like to refer to as, 21st Century Dating:

A. 1-Have no expectations when you meet someone new. The reoccurring problem with a lot of men and women who meet someone new on the dating scene, is that they set their expectations so high in a person they don’t even know. When first dates are a bust, someone gets stood up and one-nightstands don’t exactly unravel as planned, people get hurt, confused and lose it mentally because of what they expected the other person to do. Let’s be honest, it takes a few years (if not more) to truly find out what a person is and isn’t capable of. So why set expectations in a person after only a few brief encounters or phone interactions? When you step into the dating market and meet new people, expect nothing but what is actually there. Don’t expect extravagant promises, money for a lavish trip or quality time until you’ve had a period to get to the know the person of interest and have invested into a relationship that could blossom into something greater. High expectations set you up to be let down. It doesn’t mean you can’t give someone new the benefit of the doubt in a situation. It means, don’t be surprised when the man/woman you’ve only known for a month tells you they believe in a polygamous marriage.

2. Always set your standards (internally) and STICK TO IT! We all have standards we set when dating— all of us. Whether they’re high or low standards, we have them in place as a way to tailor what we want and don’t want in a man/woman. Setting standards is a way of

saying, I’ll accept this from this person or I sure as hell will not accept this from this person. For some, standards are based on level of education, family morals, religion, etc. Whatever they are, it’s important to set your standards internally, and if the person doesn’t meet a majority of what you’re looking for, don’t bend on what you believe in. Let’s be clear though! Sticking to standards doesn’t mean you should be ridiculously picky. It simply means that in order to survive 21st century dating, you have to stay attached to reasonable values so you’re not disappointed down the road.

3. You have to give a little to get a little. With standards being set, you have to remember that in today’s day-and-age, you must take some good with a little bit of “not so pleasant”. While this may seem contradictory to the rules above, it’s a lot different. Giving a little to get a little is hard for a lot of 21st century daters because they think men/women will come to them already made (like a microwaveable dinner or something). For example, you may prefer a man/woman with a very high paying job so you won’t have to worry about finances later on. However, if you meet someone who makes less than you’d desire, but they’re not behind on bills, their credit history is solid and they don’t depend on anyone to support their lifestyle or means of surviving, give them a try instead being so gung-ho on the commas on their paycheck. You will run into a slew of bad until you find Mr./Mrs. Right, however, don’t let minor things get in the way of major dating decisions. (Side note: We don’t come to people as perfect beings so remember the person dating you on the opposite end of things, will have to do the same thing you are.)

4. Keep it moving at the first red flag. He/She didn’t have money on the first date —red flag. He/She told you their ex always referred to them as being “crazy”—red flag. He/She shows signs of being overbearing early-on—red flag. His/Her living environment is deplorable (and they can actually help it)—red flag. Here’s the deal: Most of us see the bright red flags very early, but we ignore it in hopes that it’s a one-time thing or maybe that person will suddenly change because of who we are. Negative. 21st century dating is a whirlwind of all kinds of people with less than perfect attributes. So, at the first sign of something that makes you uncomfortable or freaks you out, quickly decide if you’ll stick around with that person. Never forget, red flags turn into flags planted into the ground that eventually become very difficult to remove. The good news is, there are over 7 billion people on the planet to choose from, so you’ll be okay.

While there are pretty little love stories that come out of today’s dating world, there are a lot more that struggle to thrive because single daters aren’t walking into dating with their tool belts. They aren’t equipped for what’s to come and what could happen as a result. If you develop the mindset of what it means to be a good 21st century dater and go in prepared, you’re bound to be okay until you find what you’re ultimately looking for.

There is absolutely no doubt that our lives are being shaped by forces outside of the realm of sight. Before being formed in our mother's wombs, a trajectory for our lives was already established; one that is divine in nature. It is one that points to purpose and destiny and is designed to add value and meaning. The problem arises when that trajectory is unknown and in our ignorance, remains unprotected, as it is countered by other forces that appear to have our best interests at heart, collectively, but inhibit us from seeing the misery, hopelessness, helplessness, and sometimes depression that is set to emerge half way through our journey. Culture, familial traditions, societal traditions, personal ambition (which really isn't that personal), the dominant story (which is constantly changing), and group think, all serve to usher us well into adulthood without permitting us any real opportunity to assess whether the pathway we are trudging, is really the pathway that was designed to give birth to our most authentic selves. The self that experiences fulfillment, satisfaction and true success at the end of each day, despite the

rigors and challenges we often encounter. For 5 years of my life when it should have been the happiest and most fulfilling, I was in utter darkness. I had a great career and depression. I had money in the bank and depression. I had a nice luxury car and depression. I had my own home and depression. I had great friends and depression. I had absolutely no care in the world, life was good, yet I wanted to die! I was empty, lost, hopeless, helpless, and very, very afraid; until I embarked upon this journey of "self-discovery." It changed everything. I am confident that this journey has the power to change you. If you have not grabbed your copy of my new book, On Your Way To Meeting You: The Journey That Changes Everything, let's just say you are missing out BIG time! Our stories might be quite similar. Discover how I made it through that very dark period, one filled with immense frustration and even depression, and how I managed to emerge on the other side, to now seriously beginning to live my life on purpose. The way it was meant to be lived.

Solo

Travel

Broaden Your Horizons

F

Frequently, many of us put off our travel dreams because we can’t find someone to travel with or our travel partners change their plans, thus affecting our own plans. In times past, it wasn’t easy to travel alone, especially to the more exotic destinations of the world. Today, times have changed and it’s easier than ever before to travel by yourself. With the growth of solo travelers, the world is ready and willing to embrace you as you venture into it – alone. Traveling solo doesn’t have to be lonely or daunting if a few key elements are taken into consideration. Know Your Strengths and Weaknesses Before embarking on a solo trip, it’s best to know your personal strengths and weaknesses. Take time to analyze if you’re a sociable person or if you prefer to be alone. If you prefer socializing, consider destinations or travel experiences that allow you to be around other people such as festivals, culinary tours,

ecotourism or voluntourism. If you are a more private or introverted person, give thought to taking a trip that encompasses museums and national monuments or travel experiences that will allow you to indulge in moments of solitude like beach or spa getaways. Cruises are becoming more adept at accommodating solo travelers with rooms designed for those who wish to travel alone. For example, check out the new solo/studio rooms available on Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL.com) and Royal Caribbean International (RoyalCaribbean.com). Also, there are companies like Tours By Locals (ToursByLocals.com) that allow you to arrange private tours of all types with a certified and local tour guide. Ultimately, no matter if you’re more sociable or not, one of the best ways to travel solo is through escorted groups or tours.

Writer's Corner |

Travel Alone with A Group Escorted groups or tours are an excellent way for a solo traveler to experience destinations and to meet new people. They offer the best of both worlds: the solo traveler is technically going somewhere by themselves while also having the company of other people throughout the tour. Usually, these groups are conducted by tour operators enabling travelers to enjoy excursions, meals, and other adventures with those who share similar interests. There are many tour operator companies that offer escorted group travel, such as Globus (GlobusJourneys.com) and Trafalgar Tours (Trafalgar.com/USA). When using these types of tour operators, if you don’t have flexibility in your vacation schedule, be sure to look for “Guaranteed Departures”. These tours are guaranteed to take place no matter how many guests book the tour package(s).

Practice Safety One of the most important factors when traveling alone is personal safety. All the standards tips apply, such as being aware of your surroundings and the people around you, making efforts to blend in with locals and not overtly standing out as a tourist, not

being flashy with dress and money, and drinking (partying) responsibly.

Some other tips are: • Register your trip with the U.S. State Department (State.gov). If there is any need to locate you or evacuate you from a destination, the U.S. State Department can locate you faster and easier. In addition, should you need copies of your travel documents, you can go to a local embassy or consulate and have your information readily available. • Email your travel documents and identification to yourself, a close family member or friend. By having an email record of items like your passport, visa (if possible), and itinerary, you and your loved ones will never have to worry about having access to your most important travel information. • Keep at least one copy of your travel documents securely on you (in a shoe you’re wearing, a secured pouch under your shirt, etc.) while storing your originals in the hotel room safe or safe deposit box. Never venture out for the day with your original travel documents

Travel In Style

(passport, visa – unless required by the local government, travel itinerary, etc.) on your person. Thieves look for signs of these documents for identity theft purposes. • Choose your payment methods wisely. Have one major credit card that you use for transactions or use traveler’s checks. It’s best not to use a debit card or to carry a lot of cash (even local currency), as credit cards and traveler’s checks are more easily replaced in the event of loss or theft. However, it is wise to have some local currency for transactions like taxis, local stores/supermarkets, and local artisan or farmer’s markets. Keep a secondary credit card in a safe or hotel safe deposit box in case of emergencies. Your vacation dreams don’t have to be on hold any longer. By having an adventurous spirit coupled with proper safety measures, solo travel can be exciting, fun, and personally fulfilling. If you need help in planning your next or first solo adventure, don’t hesitate to contact a Travel Agent for assistance.

Artistic Entrepreneuship

All Work. No play Keeps Inspiration Away.

If you ever come to South Florida you just have to check out our art districts. No, better yet you have to dine in one of our restaurants. No, I take that back you just have to check out our museums when you get here. What do you recommend to do in your city? Would you even know what to recommend? Or even where to go? Has it been so long since you have hit the town that you would not recognize the local streets any longer? We work HARD and we are supposed to work even harder. How else will our creative entrepreneurship rise to the next level, right? Right! However, what many entrepreneurs lose sight of is the rejuvenating force from...wait for it...a vacation. Take in a deep breath folks because here comes the cold truth:

Everyone needs a vacation or a designated time to step away from their projects in order to refuel, rejuvenate, and recharge. In actuality, your business, your spirit, your mental fitness will thrive because of this allotted time. As you read this, it is summer vacation in the states for most Americans and it has been riveting to step away from the business and enjoy South Florida. I have reconnected with the people I love; including, those within the arts business community that I truly admire. The first day I realized I was on a much needed vacation was when I walked into the African-American Research library nearby only to find this amazing full length exhibit filled with dramatic tapestries designed as dream weavers. They were colorful, massive (over 10 feet in size) and brilliantly constructed. As I walked through, eyes wide from these brightly colorful pieces, I read each caption from the artist. They spoke on his childhood and when and why dream weavers were important to him. I, suddenly, stumbled upon one of his pieces

that not only captured my spirit, but it opened up words in my mind. I took a photo, a video, shared it on Instagram with a coming soon caption of my own. I found out the artist's name, which to my surprise, turned out to be a mutual colleague, Karl "Jerry" Craig. Elated, I gave him a call to congratulate him and catch up. Afterwards, the most important thing I did was I moved along. I was so appreciative to be reminded how creatives give life to inanimate objects, but that day -and your own vacation- is not about getting work done. As a matter of fact, the more time you spend being in the moment opposed to capturing the moment the more beneficial the vacation will be. If you make a connection or get inspired with an idea make a note of it, but get back into the child's play. That is what you are there to do and the whole point to following up is giving space until a later time. Trust me getting used to being a kid again is a skill that takes time and it takes even better time management to feel like you truly deserve it. Nevertheless, your body, mind and business will thank you for it. Be purposeful about all you do in your business, but recognize that our work easily can consume us and the grind can be taxing on us all. Thus, setting a space to allow your creative juices just to play, connect with others and explore is massively important. New ideas are born, your passion rekindles and it shows that you do care about the health of your company because you care about yourself, mentally and physically. So, where do you recommend to go in your city? If you don't know, it is never too late to find out. Happy playing ;)
